Walked in for dinner had a few minute wait. Several TV's playing sports, tables, high tops and counter seating to choose from. I ordered the California chicken club. The chicken breast was a little stringy, the bacon was not freshly made. The bun was soft and fresh, the guacamole was tasty. It also came with tater tots, which were perfectly cooked and served hot. My husband ordered the dirty South burger which consists of burnt ends, Mac bites, coleslaw, cheese, and bacon, bits. He said it was one of the best burger he has ever had. To complete the meal, we ordered a caramel cheesecake to share. It was very light and fluffy and very tasty. It could have used a little more caramel sauce. With a menu selection the size of a bible, I chose the dirty south burger while my partner went with the california chicken club. Our waitress, kendri was extremely hospitable even providing constructive feedback when quizzed. Results: 1. The burger was a lifetime top 10 of all time! Prepared a perfect medium well while the onion rings, bacon, coleslaw, and finally american cheese blended deliciously. Additionally, the burnt ends was juicy, thick and firm which complemented the chuck blend. 2. The chicken was just average: salty and stringy indicating it may not have been fresh? However, for both selections the tater tots side selection were excellent : hot and cripy. For dessert, we shared a $12 slice of caramel cheesecake. - a signature item. Although it did not disappoint, beware its not considered NY Style (ultra thick and super creamy / sweet). I would apply the name "western style" as it was fluffy, light and airy. read more

Had a "slopper" here today. It's a burger patty on a bum that's covered with green chill. THe burger was slightly overcooked, when I'd specifically asked for medium rare. Additionally, the green chili that smothered the burger was abysmal. It was flavorless and the sauce was watery and thin. Cannot recommend this restaurant. As this is the San Luis Valley, which is rich in the Latino culture, there is no excuse to not make a decent green chili!!! The restaurant is a cute place that has great potential. They won't achieve that potential until the owner does a complete revamp of the recipes being used and brings in a Chef who can produce delicious meals worthy of the grossly inflated prices being charged here. My sister had the Patty Melt , $19 and my slop was $18. This was the "cash" price as the charge an up charge to use your credit card. In reviewing the current menu on their website (10/2025) Ruby Slipper has almost doubled their prices. I hope this restaurant reads my review and makes the necessary changes. Trying to give this place the benefit of the doubt. My husband's Abuela was born in Alamosa. She taught me to make green Chile with pork. Yes I'm a gringa but I still make killer food. The menu looked awesome, I was looking at several options but finally chose the green Chile with pork. The guy kept ladling it into my bowl which was huge, and I do have to say it was quite tasty, but there wasn't more than a half ounce of pork in the entire bowl. So.... We're y'all just trying to screw with me?! Fished in the pot for just the green chilies and broth but no pork? Shame on you. You made my last night in Colorado not memorable. And then the fees for charging. Just get an atm machine and take cash only. read more

We had mushrooms as an appetizer. WHOA- huge and beer battered- delicious. Definitely big enough for 3-4 people to share. I had the steak and shrimp tacos which was tasty. Had a side a mashed potatoes which was fine. My friend had the roast beef sandwich with green beans. Delicious- just like my mom use to make. So many reasons to make The Rubi Slipper a must-do meal in Alamosa. The service alone is so kind and welcoming that it would be alright if the meal was subpar. However, this is not the case. The burger menu is a full page - we ordered the incredible burger, which includes two burger patties, a mozarella stick, pickle and comes with fries. The house salad is made table side, and customizable however you like. We also ordered the shrimp tacos, topped with the tastiest of sauces. A really fun option in the tiny town of Alamosa. The place was packed on a Thursday. Service was super friendly. Beers and spirits poured. We had some kind of "sticky" appetizer sampler and everything was good. I asked my dining mates what the local favorites are and they agreed this area is known for their green chili and this place is k own for their chicken fried steak. After the appetizers we all had the table side salad. Picture a moving salad bar and the waitress builds you a custom salad out of the 8 or 10 options. Very good. I ordered the chicken fried steak covered in white gravy with jalapeños. Delicious! I had the option of green chili but I was afraid it would be too spicy for me. Instead, I grabbed a small bowl of chili as a side dish. Great call. It was fabulous but I was only able to down 3-4 bites before my eyes filled with tears and sweat was pooling on my brow. Never again. My so called "ribeye" was super fatty and not even an inch thick. Some of the large fat globs were cold. Steak was cooked on a griddle, wasn't expecting that. Not much flavor. We were in Alamosa visiting friends. We all decided to go to dinner here and my friend recommended the Dr. McAuliffe's Special. What can I say but WOW! I always use "Chicken Fried Steak" as a deciding factor for how the rest of their food will likely be. I have never had chicken fried steak smothered in either green or red chili sauce. I had it with both and after this, I may never have it any other way. The meal was fantastic, garden salad made at your table with whatever additions you want, the chicken fried steak was crispy and delicious. The restaurant is a bar/restaurant so the ambiance is exactly what you'd expect. We were in towards the end of the day but still had great service. Food was a little over priced for the quality but that is to be expected. What really got me was their pricing. It is noted that they add three percent if you use a credit card. What they DON'T tell you is that is is charged on top of your tip. Quite the scam. The server will ask you to pay at the counter with the lesser total on the hand written ticket. The cashier asks if you'd like to ad a tip to the total on the ticket. Then, they run your card with the total plus the 3% after the tip. I asked if there was a way to print a receipt reflecting the charge as it was a business expense. The manager told me that the credit card machines nor the register allow this(as they're most likely doing under the table). She then handed me a menu and told me to take a picture of their policy. She was very unsympathetic as I'm sure this was not her first rodeo. Anyway, the lesson here is to be careful traveling to small towns and be weary of the small print. Totally recommend this place!! We arrived on Saturday around 6pm and it was busy with large parties! We were told 30-40 min wait so we gave her number and there was a bench outside. As we waited - there was a ton of people arriving and in and out. Good sign. We got called right at 40 minutes. We were seated right by their dry erase board that had the cheesecake flavors for the day. Yum. On the front of the menu - it says "home of the fried taco - always $1" so we asked the waitress to describe it and we said why not. I ordered the Bernie Mac burger (burger with Mac and cheese bites on it) and a side of queso. Also got the shoestring fries. They have a lot of options in what side you want. My fiancé got the Pedro which was a beef burrito, enchilada, and taco. Our tacos came out pretty fast. They were on our table before our drinks were. They were pretty good. Not greasy (fried flour tortilla) and the beef seasoning tasted just like Taco Bell. We waited quite awhile for our food. It was really busy in there and the kitchen staff was pretty small. Our meal finally came out. My fiancé at his whole plate clean. I got the side of queso to dip my fries in but I ended up smothering my burger with it. I had put ketchup in it and took the raw onions off. The burger came with lettuce and pickles as well. The Mac n cheese bites were good but not Cheesy enough for me on the burger so very glad I had the queso. The queso was phenomenal!! Had lots of flavors with some meat in it and a little kick! The burger was cooked about medium well - almost well which I was worried because the waitress hadn't asked me how I wanted it cooked. It was exactly how I would've asked for it. I also saw a plate come out that was with curly fries - dang it - I missed that !! We ended up getting a Snickers cheesecake to go since we were stuffed. And holy moly - it was delicious! It was creamy but fluffy at the same time! Could be the best cheesecake I've ever had. I was teetering between 4 and 5 stars due to service / wait times, and the burger being below but when I think of the queso and cheesecake - it comes back up!!! After a day playing in the sand dunes, a long scrubbing shower, and hungry; we decided on this place for dinner. We walked over since it was super convenient. We got there, was greeted, and sat down. The place is casual with a 1950s feel. Place was busy. Our waitress was friendly and awesome. I started off with a black cherry margarita since she said they make good margaritas. She was right. The margarita was huge, almost as big as my face! Lol Yes, I did finish it. My beau did help me take two big sips. Lol Because this place was known for their burgers, we both got burgers for dinner. I got the Danny burger with tots and the beau got the Diner burger with sweet potato fries. Oh scrumptiousness! Did our burgers come out hot and tasty. The sweet potato fries and my lovely tots were cooked perfectly, crunchy and soft! Heavenly good. The buns on our hamburger was soft and tasty. The patties were cooked perfectly, hot, with the perfect amount of condiments on it. This place hit the spot for dinner. We both enjoyed it very much.
