Sometimes simplicity is all one could want especially in a foreign town. The fambam came to the Great Sand Dunes and wanted a place to have dinner near our hotel in Monte Vista. Not much to choose from and Yelp doesn't seem used often. Hubs and I decided this place looked good and kid friendly so off we went! First off, friendly and welcoming! Sometimes when a family with kids enters a restaurant we are welcomed with frowns and scowls but not here. I immediately could tell this was a family owned joint and that made me smile. The kids drinks were brought in the most perfect kids cups complete with lids I almost wanted to keep one! Each meal wasn't fancy but home cooked and delicious. My margarita was spicy however, may I recommend adding cucumber or pineapple to compliment the heat?? My favorite part was when a male owner, name wasn't presented came over to check on us. He politely and warmly gave my son a pat on the shoulder the way my father aka "Papa" used to before he passed away almost 2 years ago. I almost started crying because it felt like he was there with us seeing that warm gesture. Thank you for such a warm, inviting, and delicious meal. The kids loved it and so did we! What an unexpected delight! Here we are, driving through the night and tired of food that comes in bags, and we decided to get Mountain View Restaurant. What. A. Treat. This place has a lovely family history, and prides itself on the freshness and simplicity of ingredients. The green chili is amazing. The tacos and burrito were absolutely fantastic. Even the salsa is yummy. Top that off with wonderfully friendly staff (they brought us samples of chili - well, it worked), and you have a fantastic experience. My only caution is they don't rush here, so if you're in a hurry, maybe try it next time. However, if you (like us) want to sit and enjoy, then this is a must-stop. Yum! read more

Another one of Monte Vista'a long-time establishments. A mix of American and Mexican food with really good chili, ample portions; fish and chips on Fridays is one of my favorites. Unfortunately, with these down times of the COVID19 epidemic, the Mountain View will be running only a food truck because of the closure of the dining room by the governor. But look for them to come roaring back once the ban is lifted. The family is wonderful, the wait staff has been there a long time-which is a testament to the goodness of the management and owners of this fixture in Monte Vista. read more

We are visiting from out of town. First time going here and everything was perfect. Restaurant was extremely clean and well laid out. We were sat quickly and our waitress came right over and took our drink order. After hearing this was our first time there she pointed out several of their top sellers. It was lunch but if it was dinner I would have gotten the steak and enchilada. It was lunch so I got the monte burger. It was amazing and the fries were nice and crispy. What a delightful little gem we found at Mountain View Restaurant. The interior is beautiful, the staff is as friendly as it gets, and the chefs know how to make delicious food. The restaurant has a relaxing atmosphere, enabling us to just chill and recharge over a great meal. This restaurant is known for their steak and rightly so. I asked if they could make a steak burrito which is slightly off-menu as the primary burrito filling choices are beef or chicken. My request was honored with zero resistance and an incredibly fair up-charge. Most places throw in a great number of things into a burrito to try and distract you, but not here. This burrito was PACKED FULL OF STEAK! This is the stuff dreams are made of, MEATRITO. The steak inside my burrito was: Perfectly tenderized Perfectly trimmed to get rid of gristle and hard fat Perfectly medium rare (as requested) Perfectly seasoned Perfectly melted in the mouth The green chili has some unique features that might get a green chili purist upset, but I found the small changes to be welcome and delicious. I won't give away their secret recipe, but it is packed full of green chilis and absolutely complimented my steak burrito perfectly. The locally grown potatoes on the plate were surprising, but definitely not out of place as they provided a great change but complimentary flavor alongside the steak burrito, green chili, and beans on the plate. Salsa is fresh as can be even if the chips are straight out of a movie theatre nacho bag . Service is super polite and wicked fast! Guy next to me has fries... wish I did as I'm in Colorado potatoes country :-) Quesidilla is great, comes with Pico, sour cream and guacamole with Green Chile so fresh it had to be made this morning. If your kids are squirmy from being in the car too long, this is not the place to go. We had burgers, ribs, and chicken tenders. The kids were wiggly so we left before the sopapillas came out. The ribs were tender and tasty, the burgers were pretty average and they don't cook to order. The chicken strips and fries were solid, but not remarkable. Service was friendly, but a little slow. First time here. Came in with friends. Very friendly service and attentive. Ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and the Chicken Quesadilla. Three of the people in our party had the Chicken Fried Steak. The Chicken Fried Steak was tender, nice size portion with mashed potatoes and country gravy. It was outstanding. The Chicken Quesadilla was also outstanding. Tortilla was perfect and the chicken was tender and with big carved slices. The quesadilla also came with chips and salsa, sour cream and guacamole. HORRIBLE service!!!!! They ONLY treat their REGULAR customers well. And I noticed the difference by seeing the way the waitress interacted with us, compared to our neighboring tables. So, we were driving through town and thought we would get breakfast from here. The waitress did not give us water, no straws, no ketchup, literally raised her eyebrows at me when I said excuse me can I have some ketchup. When we asked for straws, she only gave one. I've been eating at Mountain View or "Ronnie's" for years and when it comes to Mexican food I use them as my gold standard that I compare every other restaurant to. Whenever I make it back to the Valley I always make sure I get at least one meal here. That meal normally is a breakfast burrito, but this trip my first meal here was not a breakfast burrito, but a chicken burrito. Now my usual is the bean burrito, filled with wonderfully cooked pinto beans then smothered green chili, but I do think I might have found a new usual. I was expecting shredded chicken like you find in their amazing chicken enchiladas, but it was just sliced chicken. I'm not exactly sure how they marinated the chicken, but it was really, really good. Top that off with their amazing green chili and it was a combination that is hard to beat. Ever since I moved away from the Valley in the late 90s I compare every Mexican restaurant I eat at to this place, and I can honestly say that I've ate at several very good Mexican food restaurants, none have been as good as this place. I will continue to make this place a must eat when I visit the Valley, and yes it is that good. read more

We didn't come here for Mexican food, and honestly, I would have never thought it was a Mexican restaurant... I was in town passing through and we stopped here for breakfast. I was super impressed by how clean the place was. The staff was friendly, you can tell this is a place where people know people... that awesome small town feeling. The barbecue is great. however you have to get there early to get some of the favorite stuff because they never fix enough and they run out. Pretty much once they run out they close the doors for the day. So if you want to eat there you got to get there quickly. The food was very good. we enjoed the barbecue and all the sides and the owner is working on the line just like the rest of his staff. I do like the fact that you can get different sizes of sides so if you want to try a little bit of everything you can get smaller portions or if you like one side in particular you can get a larger portion of that.The only reason I didn't give it 5 Stars was because of the way they run the barbecue and then run out curious I would recommend it to anyone who's going to cloudcroft. It's a newer restaurant and occupies what used to be a general store deli. It's very popular with the people from cloudcroft and the surrounding areas like Alamogordo. read more

Meal was super tasty and social distancing put our minds at ease. After a long day at Sand Dimes National Park we returned to Monte Vista and would have gone two nights in a row but tclosed at 8pm. Wonderful and fun but longer hours for us tourists would be fantastic. read more

Food here is very uneven in quality. One time I had a great cheese and onion enchilada in red sauce, and the next time the cheese inside wasn't even melted. How's it cooked? "I'll have them put it through the heater again." I don't know what that means, but it wasn't long until the enchilada came back. Food often tastes stale. If I need comfort food, I might go here for the chicken fried steak. The menu is American-Mexican with familiar items in either culture. They have a full bar here, and make a few mixed drinks. There is a small salad bar and the chips and salsa are alright. I'm turned off by the sides of meals, which look and taste like canned veggies. The service has always been fantastic and friendly. Disclaimer: we came here only once and had two Mexican entrees. I have not tried their American dishes or their desserts. I grew up with a lot of good Mexican food but I am by no means an expert. tl;dr: the Mexican dishes are bland and taste like they are made from canned ingredients. Avoid. We were passing through from the west coast and came here based on the good Yelp reviews (best in town). We were expecting a good or at least passable meal. The service was ok. Our water was kept full but the waitress gave us some weird looks and almost seemed upset that we were there. Below average service but it wouldn't have mattered if the food was good. But the food was not good. The chips were Tostitos tortilla chip rounds or something similar, and I think the salsa was mission brand. If not, it was a similar prepackaged salsa. We ordered chicken enchiladas and a beef burrito (~$12 each dish before tax/tip) Both were served with a side of cheesy scalloped potatoes and pinto beans. It was an odd serving choice but I wouldn't have minded it if it worked. However, the flavors did not pair well. The beans tasted like they were directly out of a can with little to no seasoning. The potatoes were a little dry but otherwise ok. The chicken enchiladas were bland and the meat was very moist. It didn't taste like an enchilada. It didn't really taste like anything actually. The sauce on top tasted like patito brand enchilada sauce but was ok. The burrito was filled with the same bland beans and some heavily seasoned ground beef. It was better than the enchiladas but was still the worst burrito I have ever had. The flavor profiles of both were extremely simple and lacked any depth. The sauce tries to cover up the bland dish beneath but fails miserably. I don't know why this place has good reviews. Stay away if you're looking for good Mexican food. read more

This restaurant to me is so hit or miss when it comes to the quality of there food. Last time I was there the Food was Great, service was ok, and price well that is a whole different thing, But the time before that the food was just okay. The price on certain items at this restaurant are a little high, the mexican food which is just ok mexican food comparing it to other mexican restaurants in Monte Vista is way overpriced but other items seem to be more on par with other restaurants. read more

We had the mixed sampler as an appetizer which was quite alright but nothing extraordinary however. For our main course I decided on the prime rib and my wife had a burger with sautéed mushrooms. My prime rib was not cooked to my liking and not as I ordered it. The fries were swimming in the fat and my wife's burger was just dry. The service however was very kind. When I'm back in town I wouldn't go there again and would rather try another place. read more
