Went to Sand dunes for the day and great place to stop near by with authentic food. Really large location- one of us did buffet and other normal dishes. THIS place had HUGE drinks and food- but overall great. Very affordable and food was really good. Buffet quality (some might be sitting a little) but street tacos section and most of the food was fresh. Buffet gave availability for tons of options and to try new dishes. All four of us did the buffet. There is a good variety of options there, from starters, entres, and desserts (actually, tons of desserts). However, the labeling is atrocious and it's often hard to tell what each item is (like, the churros were labeled as tacos). I think they are just always shifting things around, so they must have trouble keeping up with things. I wish they had a bit more variety of vegetables for the buffet that aren't part of a final dish (like in an enchilada). It's mostly just meats there. A few of the things seem a bit suspect, too. The smaller make-your-own tacos have sad looking ground beef and "queso." But I guess that's to be expected at the "American style" taco part of the buffet. I see that some reviews have mentioned there being grilled veggies, but that was not around on the day we were there. I'm not sure if that's a part of the menu you can order from, or if there's just that much variety in what they offer day-to-day. What's not to be missed, though, and it very good, are the fresh tortillas and made-to-order street tacos. Very yummy. I could just eat the tortillas all day. Best of all, everyone there is very friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. If the labeling were a bit better and some more vegetables (beyond salad), I think it would be 5 stars. Went there with a group of 20 and was sat down. Immediately service was absolutely amazing extremely friendly staff couldn't complain one bit as far as the food goes wow it was amazing. Just note that the main entrance is not alongside Main Street. It's further into the parking lot area. LOCATION/AMBIANCE They had it tastefully and minimally decorated with Dia De Los Muertos vibes in addition to their family photos. Yes, this is a family-owned and operated restaurant in Southern Colorado! They have booths for smaller groups and tables with chairs for larger groups. THE GRUB My significant other thoroughly enjoyed the "SLV" (San Luis Valley" plate ($12) with cheese enchiladas and green sauce. His plate came with beans and rice. I opted for the "UFO" plate which entailed stacked enchiladas with my choice of shredded beef and green sauce topped with "sunny side up" eggs ($13). This dish had a more impactful kick with the spice from the green sauce unlike another Mexican restaurant I've tried in this small town. The only thing I didn't like were the eggs. They certainly were not sunny side up, but over-medium instead... no runniness to ooze over my enchiladas! We also had a few margaritas as we were sold on the "2 for $12" for regular or flavored ones. The best was the complimentary chips with salsa AND queso! Love that! Next time I would love to try their buffet as the mister and I peeped in on it.... LITTLE YELPER'S CLUB I did not ask about a kid's menu and didn't see any mention of one on the regular menu. SERVICE We interacted with four employees. All very friendly and accomodating. Their women's restrooms need some attention with the lack of at least one broken latch on the door. We've lived in Texas, California, and Mexico and somehow have never had food as good as Calvillo's restaurant in Alamosa. We stopped in Alamosa on a whim, just casually to get gas and decided to take a gamble on grabbing some food. We walked into Calvillos and immediately saw 9 status of Jesus and an enormous buffet. Still, we didn't know what a jackpot this place was until our first bite. The green chili stew made my eyes water and belly smile. The pozole was better than momma's. The pork ribs were better than the famous ones I make. I was laughing at my husband because it was so cute to see him freak out about the food. We were treated like family and even had a little conversation about how we could somehow move here just to eat at this place weekly. Lol read more

Meh. Completely average tex mex food. I should've known when I walked in and they were advertising their buffet that it was going to be lame. I asked the waiter if he'd recommend the pork loin mole or carnitas michoacanas. If I wanted something "saucy," try the mole. It's true -- mole is a sauce. But I expected a bit more information about a dish they were highlighting as a new special. I got the carnitas and wished I hadn't. The meat was so dry it needed sauce to be eaten, and yet the plate came with not much guac, sour cream, or pico. The refried beans were flavorless and almost certainly canned. read more

I had eaten here on a trip through Alamosa many years ago and I remembered how good the buffet was. This time through, I sought it out--and boy it did not disappoint. Every single item I tried on the buffet was outstanding, from the posole, the chile verde, the adobo pork, the empanadas (just filled with meet and oozing with melted cheese), the rellenos. I remembered a green chile/cheese casserole that I didn't see, and when I mentioned it to the manager, he instantly went back to the kitchen and they made one for me right there. I loved this place. Calvillo's is just ok, but if you're staying near the sand dunes National park, food options are limited. We came on a Sunday evening and were seated right away. There are both a la carte menu options and a buffet option, but we couldn't tell what was being served in the buffet. I ordered the steak fajitas, and the food was ok/edible but not great. The meat was dry/over cooked and not even served on a hot plate as expected. They have a pretty extensive drink menu, but the drinks are a little watered down. This place is truly homemade and authentic. They have a buffet or you can order off the menu, which is what we opted for. I ordered the American ground beef tacos, and requested flour tortillas instead of corn. So glad I did because they came out hot, soft, and delicious. The meat was properly seasoned. Fantastic service and delicious food. Our family of 7 was traveling through this area after a visit to the Great Sand Dines and Zapata Falls, and we took a chance. We are so glad we did! Although the buffet looked fresh and hearty we decided to order from the menu. We tried a variety of things, chicken fajitas, burrito bowl, Carne Asada tacos, chile rellenos, and .quesadillas which were all worth a second visit. In addition, the sangria and margaritas are made in house with no mix by the owner who said he learned the recipe in California and brought it to Alimosa 23 years ago. We were seated immediately on. Thursday night. Plenty of parking in the attached lot. They start you with complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa was not spicy. I tried a bunch of items off the a la carte menu. Pork tamale with green Chile sauce is so made in house. This was my favorite. Shredded beef enchilada with red Chile sauce was good. The relleno pie was good if you like the taste of a jalapeño. My friend had the carne asada-reason for a one star deduction. The steak with not high quality and was super thin. The Chile stuffed with cheese was tasty. It was served with fresh zucchini and guacamole. The refried beans are good. I ended my meal with a freshly fried sopapilla and I drizzled honey on it! The positive is how nice and friendly the servers were and they consistently checked on us. Chips and salsa very good. The salsa has that homemade taste- yum! The chips are not flimsy- good solid chips. I got the americanos tacos and they were not good. 1st as soon as I picked up my tacos they broke out the bottom. The chicken and beef was flavorless. Instead of lettuce they used a lettuce/ cabbage mix combo but on the menu it says lettuce. I mention this because I don't like cabbage and had I known this I wouldn't of ordered it. The beans on my plate were burnt to the plate - clear sign of a microwave being used. The rice was pure mush. The other party in my group got carne asada tacos and they said it was good and had good flavor. They looked like street tacos. The Sopapillas were very good. They had a good amount of dough - not thin and flimsy. They give you a bottle of honey you can pour over them. Overall this restaurant has good service but the food isn't very good. For a Mexican restaurant to have a bland beef and chicken taco is inexcusable, thus they are getting only 2 stars. They are only operating at 50% of capacity because of Covid however other restaurants are as well and their food still has great flavor. read more

Absolutely one of the worst experiences we've had at a restaurant. When we got there we were seated quickly, but the hostess immediately started pushing the buffet and the our waitress came up pushing the same. She also presented us with a half basket of stale tortilla chips with an actually decent salsa and a cold cup of queso. When we asked for menus she reluctantly gave them to us and told us they are expecting a big party so the kitchen was already overrun and she really would prefer we not order off the menu. Half our table decided to do the buffet and half off the menu. We also ordered a round of "house" margaritas which seemed to be made with Sprite, orange juice (?), and maybe a splash of tequila. Worst margarita I've ever had. The buffet looked like it had been out already for half a day with no identification of what we were eating. The food was incredibly bland. Our waitress came by often trying to pull our plates, even those ordered off the menu before we were done. It legitimately felt like she was trying to usher us out of the restaurant before our food was finished. We had to hover over our plates to keep her from grabbing them between bites. When we got the check, she added an 18% gratuity for being a "large" group. We only had 7 people, but no skin off my back. I always tip 20% at a minimum, being a former waiter myself and often tip more, so the waitress shorted herself. To make things worse, the checks were split between our family of 4 and our friends family of 3. When the cards were ran, she ran the wrong cards on the wrong checks. Needless to say, we will never return. read more

We stopped in for a refreshing margarita after a day of hiking. We were welcomed kindly and presented with thin, crispy chips and the BEST salsa - so fresh - while the bartender Gonzalez fixed our drinks. These were some of the finest margaritas ever! And he came around from the bar to place them before us, engaging in good conversation. If we hadn't eaten a heftier lunch we would've ordered a full meal. There's no doubt in my mind it would've been outstanding. There was a buffet set up, too, that was definitely tempting. Gonzalez fixed us a to-go margarita to enjoy when we got back to our campsite. Should we return to Alamosa we will assuredly stop in for the full meal deal! Highly recommend! read more

The food and service was good, a 3 out of 5 for most every thing we ate. The margaritas were not good at all. My biggest issue is that I got yelled at by a manager for taking napkins. I literally tried to take 5 napkins from the bar and was I could only take 1. After spending nearly 100$ on a meal for three people, you would think that few napkins wouldn't be a big deal. This was an absolute gem to find! I have several dietary restrictions, and the chef/owner (not sure who it was) came out to help me with the buffet and even checked on me throughout. The food was the best Mexican food I've ever tried (never had menudo before, but even that was amazing despite what I had heard about the soup in general), and the staff was extremely warm, welcoming, and friendly. One of my favorite parts was the house-made chicharrones, and the stewed mushrooms were surprisingly addicting. Family-style and relaxing ambiance topped it off. We were just passing by on our road trip, but it might very well be worth a few extra hours to come back again!! Would recommend to anyone!!! read more

Had a nice chat with one of the family member owners...it seemed much of the staff was family...who was real real happy that things were back to normal after a rough Covid run. I've come here several times over the years and thought it was time to post an updated review. The menu is normally fairly extensive and offers a veghead like me several good food options. I believe I had spinach vegetable tamales on a prior visit and I recall they were very good. Today, the menu has a notice that due to staffing issues, they are offering a limited menu with no substitutions. I am sure they appreciate the guests who opt for the buffet. Sadly, it does not work for me with my non-meat-eating self. There are a few veg options on the limited menu which is nice to see. I ended up ordering the chile rellenos and as always, I am never disappointed. The chips are always fresh, hot, and seasoned perfectly and the salsa is so fresh and spicy. The relleno was perfect. My first time having them here and glad I did! For a fried dish, these were light and coated with a roasty-red sauce that fit perfectly. The beans are nicely seasoned and topped with cheese and the plate also comes with a salsa/slaw that combined so well with everything. Taking half of this home for later - portions are big if you are not a big eater! Service may be limited but, everyone was as friendly and efficient as ever. There's a reason Cavillo's has been around this long. If you're a meat eater, I do recommend the buffet. My friend enjoyed it quite a lot. Come hungry and use caution filling that plate! Wow, I'm not even sure where to start. Apparently nobody in town was prepared for a Sunday crowd on a holiday weekend, or increased demand for graduation parties, so this place was an absolute sh*t show. There were so many people they couldn't accommodate orders off the menu so everyone was forced to do the buffet. And then they ran out of plates, which is probably the most critical part of a buffet. I kindly asked bartender for a drink menu, which he kindly responded "I'm the menu, do you want a couple of margaritas?". I guess I'll have a forced buffet with a forced margarita , thank you so much. Tacos at buffet were so tiny I could have consolidated the 2 tacos into 1. Did I mention they also have a wastage fee if you end up scrapping too much of your plate? I suggest that if the buffet is not profitable, to the point of charging a wastage fee, and not being able to accommodate a large crowd, you get rid of the buffet! I appreciated the bartender trying to make things right but overall a weird restaurant experience, that I'll strangely remember, and not in a good way. Hope you have a better experience!! read more

Ate at this restaurant on July 29 with my husband. They obeyed covid guidelines and sat us far away from other customers. Location of this restaurant is great and they have a lot of parking spaces. Service is also excellent...they check on you after they serve the food. Negative comments outweigh the positives, however, because this is a restaurant and their food has to carry them, right? First off, unlike many Mexican restaurants, they charge for chips and salsa. (Huh?!!!) Second, their food is mediocre at best. I'm sure there are Mexican restaurants in Alamosa so much better than this one. This will be our 1st and last visit here. read more
