This is for the Petting Zoo ONLY. At $5 a person, it's really not that bad. Kind of small, but, they have a lot of animals. A couple of chickens, a couple of turkey's, a bunch of goats (including 2 babies,) a pig, and some rabbits. The workers there don't earn a salary, so tip the workers, especially if they do something for you. I didn't ride the horses, they have a weight limit of 225, at least that's what the sign says. Went on a recent one hour ride, I was given a horse who tailgates per the guide and likes to bite when lined up to take pictures, my husband's horse was a new horse who the guide told us none of the other horses like. For a novice like me, an hour was long enough, though I didn't realize until I got off the horse. I was sorely reminded of the reason why cowboys are bowlegged. I took my 3 granddaughters, ages 9 and 13 last week. They enjoyed it very much. The horses were calm and easy to ride, however, when we returned my 9 year old granddaughter was not helped dismounting and fell. Her legs hit the dismount block and so did her arm. NO ONE helped her they literally told her to go sit by the office. No one got her ice or even checked if she was bleeding. Her leg was scraped and bruised immediately. Again no one asked her if she was ok. The ride is only 50 minutes, not an hour and there is a sign that says guides only work for tips which l didn't know until l arrived read more

Unhappy, unfriendly people . From the reservations person who was rude and not very informative down to the stable staff.... Felt like we were bothering them and they made us feel very out of place ( guess they dislike tourist) views were dead field right off the road felt like a pony ride at the pumpkin patch only way more money. Said be there a half hour early stated if we were a few minutes late they'd she said they will take it out of a ride time , yet they didn't start on time at all ... GUYS - I got to pet a TURKEY! Oh, you want a review? ;) Fantastic horseback riding in Big Bear Valley. In addition to horseback riding, they also have a petting zoo ($3 per person, $1 per food cup if you want to feed the animals) and pony rides. Rides start at $55/hour per person with a $5 discount per hour if you pay cash instead of using credit card. I ride a lot and it's not uncommon for rides to be closer to $100/ per person so this pricing was great. Important things to note: You must sign a waiver and be 225 pounds or less to ride. No pregnant riders for safety reasons. They offer helmets that are very comfortable. We went on a leisurely 1 hour ride that was so relaxing - the scenery can't be beat! The staff is very friendly and it's very clear that they take impeccable care of their animals. Our horseback riding guide let us know most of their horses are rescues - fantastic! Was excited to come here until we had to pay, the guy looked annoyed grabbing our money. Then when adding a pony ride he looked even more annoyed. He told us to wait at a bench then a lady came and was like are u guys here for the petting zoo? We said yes was told to wait here she goes oh no just come to the gate! We get in they are working all around us as if we are in there way! We ask about the animals they are short with there answers and sound like they know nothing about the animals. Then i say my sons ready for the pony ride shes like ok let me get the pony ready! She comes out with pony, my son gets on half way into the first lap shes tells the pony "I know your tired I'm so sorry" then starts to tell me its been a long day and the pony is tired. I said oh I'm sorry, then she goes on and on about how much work she has to do and then ask me we usually do 4 laps do u want to do all four? As we are almost done on the first lap. At this point my son says can i do one more lap i know the pony is tired so we wont do all 4 and she says omg so sweet of you thank u for being so kind! At this point I'm thinking y'all should charge 5 dollars and do a lap if you are over working the pony! My wife brought me up to Big Bear for a surprise get away and she took me here. We called a little before we were scheduled to be there to check in because it was supposed to snow a couple inches. They said it was still a go. We got there and checked in for the sunset ride. We were a little early so we chatted with the employees a bit. They did tell us since it was cold we could opt to do on the 1 hour ride. But we wanted to do the sunset ride and they said no problem. We came dressed appropriately ... it was about 40 degrees. Crystal was our guide. She was great. During the ride she told us information about the horses and the area. It was a lot of fun. The weather held out perfectly. We had blue sky the entire time but you could see the storm rolling in. Crystal rode Sahara. I was on Brannigan. My wife was on Maverick. All excellent horses. We will definitely be back. read more

Great service. We booked time for my wife and 2 of our kids, the third didn't want to go. After hearing how much fun we had, she wanted to go- and they were able to squeeze us in again at the end of the day. Guides were super friendly and patient- all of us were basically first time riders, even our 7 year old who went both times and had a blast. The hour long ride is perfect- they take you up some trails and scenic areas- this is not just riding a horse down a dirt road- you definitely go off the beaten path. We were lucky to catch a storm as it was rolling in right before it started raining and the lightning and thunder just added to the experience. I loved the two-hour ride, we had James as our guide, and he was very informative and able to answer any and all questions we had questions we had. I enjoyed the peacefulness of the ride and beautiful scenery. I got to ride Trevor and it was super fun. I always enjoy riding horses and I really love how every horse has its own personality. It was my first time riding a horse as well as my boyfriends! We called the day before to make a reservation for a one hour ride around noon the next day. We have no problem getting the time slot we wanted. You will need a credit card to hold your reservation, but you can pay there with cash when you arrive and save five dollars per person. A great deal in my opinion. As far as driving there, make sure to turn into the paved parking lot near the red looking shack. Do not go down the dirt road. When we got there we checked in and signed the waiver. *Addressing the reviews about the Lady being rude, we were super nice and patient with her and she was super nice and patient with us. I think it all come down to his st treating people how they want to be treated.* We then tried on our helmets and requested bigger ones since we have larger heads. The larger helmets were way more comfortable. Getting on the horse was easier than I expected because the guides help you get on and there is a platform you stand on to help with the height difference. Our tour guides were super nice and constantly made sure everyone felt comfortable on their horse and gave us advice if they thought we were leaning to one side of our saddle. The ride itself is on a dirt road and then up into the mountain. I would recommend being aware of how close you are to the trees because my leg did get caught against one and it did not feel that great. I realized I had to pull on the reigns a little harder that I orgInially thought just because I like being as gentle as possible with all animals. When I did pull with the right strength, my horse Maverick listened very well. He tried to divert a couple times to munch on a bush but was easily corrected. All of the horses at this facility are ten years old or older. They were all super mellow and we did not have any issues in our group of seven riders. I would highly recommend this location for first time riders! I was surprisingly not as sore as I expected after a one hour ride. My legs were definitely wobbly after I got off the horse so just be prepared for that and take your time with everything! I think this is an overall great deal for your money as well and please remember to bring tips for your guides! They deserve it! P.s. you are not allowed to use any phones or cameras on your ride for safety reasons. They give you a sack to put things in and it hangs on the horse. But the guides use your devices to take pictures of you midway through the ride! I was super happy that they captured such a great memory! read more

I first called around 10, and they asked me to call back after thirty minutes. Which I did. Then, I called them five consecutive times and the first time they hung up unexpected . Each time I called they asked me to wait for at least 5 more minutes, and yet it's not the waiting time that prompted me to give them one star, it's the scrupulous crappy customer service! The second time their phone line has bad connection, and I requested kindly that they repeat the question, they hung up. The third time they answered, with the usual waiting time, after I speak my first sentence, they asked me to repeat, after three times, they hung up. Then I called twice, which shows that it's busy. Great experience on the one hour guided horseback ride. The guides were really friendly and helpful. They knew the horses personalities and were true horse lovers. I had some experience with horses however my husband and son had never ridden. They were nervous at first but the guides eased their worries right away. I appreciated how my 15 year old son, the only child in our group, was kept right behind the lead guide. It made him feel secure for this new experience. 2 stars - just for the horses and for the friendly guides. The loss of stars is due to the poor customer service of the office manager (potential owner?). Now, I work at a rental barn, and was intrigued to visit another rental barn to see the differences in operation between my barn and this one. My 4 other girlfriends also work at various barns across the country. Needless to say, we're horse people - we know how to ride, know how to adjust tack and know good customer service when we see it.... so now begins my story. This barn requires that you show up 30 minutes beforehand for check in. Our group arrives 30 minutes ahead of time, walks to the check in area and has to wait, as there are 2 other groups ahead of us; approximately 10-15 minutes goes by. We walk up to check in and the office manager says to us "hurry up and fill these out - you're late." Ummm excuse us, but we were right on time and had to wait in line because YOU weren't checking in other people quickly enough. We get through all our waivers, look at the time and it's 11 - our ride wasn't until 11:15. 15 minutes to mount horse (this didn't seem as detrimental of a problem as the lady made it seem). My friends mount up and we did notice that some of the girth's weren't tightened - this became a problem as one of my friends mounted up and we had to yell to her to straighten her saddle out because her saddle was slipping over to the other side. I was the last one to mount up - the office manager was the one to personally help me on. She gives me directions on how to get on, mentioning to land lightly. I pop up, sit down, and she yells "I TOLD YOU TO SIT LIGHTLY!" Again, I'm a horse person - I know how to mount. I was taken aback - my horse didn't huff, didn't buckle underneath me, no sign that it distressed the horse (my other friend also saw me mount and said that I did mount lightly). Next, the lady walks me over to my designated place in line - I will say, this is a nice touch because the horses aren't given the chance to bicker when they're placed in their order pre-ride. I get put in my place and am asked to stand up to check the lengths of my stirrups. At this time, I note the end of my pelvis is MUCH higher than seat. She says "ok" and goes to turn away and I say "actually, I need my stirrups dropped down." As she's adjusting my stirrups, she notices my friend behind me who has her horses reins pulled taught. The lady snaps at her to loosen her horses reins - mind you, this horse is in a hackamore (a bit less set-up). My friend says that her horse kept trying to walk away and that's why she had the reins where they were at. The lady goes to loosen the reins on my friends horse and, of course, her horse goes to walk forward. The lady says "you have to keep five feet in front of your horse and the next horse." Well, if you let my friend keep the reins where she originally had them at, then that space would've been kept - your fault now. The lady then walks away from me - didn't check my stirrup length again, which ended up being too short still and hurting my knees after only an hour. I ride Western and prefer longer stirrups - one of my friends and I had been set up the English way and both walked away with distressed knees. As I said, the ride was nice and the guides were friendly. They even commented on how nice and patient we were - not all "horse people" are when visiting rental barns, something I know all too well from my own place of work. Overall, I feel like with better office management, customer service, more attention to detail, and less rudeness, this rental barn would be more deserving of 5 stars. read more

Was a perfect first ride for my daughter as it's stunning scenery. We then popped into the petting zoo which is small but has some pot bellied pigs, goats and rabbits. We had a great time on the 1 hour horseback ride with the guide Cheyenne (Do I spelled right?) was great and very cheerful guide. My horse was Boomer; he was big, beautiflu, strong, and very independent boy with strong will (in other words, "stubborn"? ). It was my son's very 1st horseback ride and he got Pigeon; he's very calm and very steady with his own pase, even my son kick him to go faster. My husband got another very big & strong boy (I forgot the name...); my husband said he was well behaved and followed well with the commands. Walking around the woods was nice and relaxing; I wished a bit more longer. Overall, we had nice and relaxing time. I would like to try sunset ride next time. read more

My husband and I went on a 2 hour ride today - we made our reservations over a week in advance. The lady (didn't give her name) who seems to be the owner was nice, and our guide, James, was very kind. We have ridden at other stables and this one was okay. I rode Amigo and my husband rode Moss - it was a VERY slow 2 hour ride. We rode up to the picture spot and got a few pictures. The view was brief, though spectacular, and that was about it. We rode in silence for the majority of the 2 hours and the view, besides the top of the mountain, was okay. I've ridden many times and my husband had only ridden twice before this - he rode Moss, who was pretty temperamental that day and tried to bite my horse, Amigo, when we took pictures. But our guide handled it well, and the ride overall was fine, just very slow and very quiet and quite expensive. I've been to other stables where the rides have been cheaper and our guides much more talkative and informative and there was wine tasting afterward. We paid $200 for this ride and that was it. Nothing afterward, no time with the horses, nothing extra except a "bye." Overall, it was fun for the one time experience, but I don't think we will be back. read more

We had a great time! I was really worried and very vigilant as a result of the uneven reviews. But we experienced none of the negative feedback. Staff and guide were friendly and welcoming. We were early and they were able to accommodate us early. The horses seemed well cared for (including visually the ponies and petting zoo animals). The ride was a lot through a relatively residential area but loved the national forest trail. All in all our group ranging in age from 9-73 enjoyed and would do again in Big Bear! read more

Years ago, I decided to go horseback riding here and take a day off from skiing. What a painful mistake. From now on, I will stick to skiing in the wintertime. The ride with a group of people was peaceful until the end when there was about a 1/4 mile left. There was snow on the ground, probably about 3 feet, but none on the trail, which was muddy. Without warning, my horse's 2 front legs went up in the air and I was tossed off, splat into the mud. I was stunned and hurt, though able to get back slowly on the horse. The guide said the horse saw a truck carrying a tractor on it along the road and got spooked. I got back to the stables, told the manager whose attitude was nonchalant. He did not care at all. I ended up with a torn rotator cuff and back pain enough to warrant at least a month of Physical Therapy. Fortunately I had health insurance at the time. I will not ride here again. By the way, I had even taken horsemanship in high school. read more

My boyfriend and I came here to ride horses while we were up at Big Bear Lake for Fourth of July. The stables are a far drive from the lake, and it's sort of hidden, so we got kind of lost trying to find it at first. For the both of us, it was $80 for an hour. We had a guide who was also on horse, who guided us up a trail, took pictures of us, and guided us back down. This place is great for beginners- single file line of only walking with the horse. You do go into the San Bernardino national forest which is pretty & pleasant. I was there over the busy Labor day weekend so there was maybe 12 of us and 3 instructors. I would advise not going at a super busy time. Also, we made a reservation over the phone & held our place with credit card info. I went horseback riding with my dad- we used to go all the time when I was younger back in LA & we were able to walk side by side & we were even able to go at a trotting pace. However, this time my dad was on a horse who didn't like other horses getting too close so I wasn't really able to talk to my dad or enjoy my ride with him. Also, it's pretty overpriced, but that's understandable since it's the only horseback riding place nearby (that I found) & it's a pretty touristy place. read more
