We used to love it at Ballard Pediatric Dentistry. Then, they dropped our insurance with very short notice. After that, the cost went up 200% every year reliably. The amount of our last bill was absolutely shocking. Everyone there is great, the office is bright and airy, but nothing make those prices worth it. Overdue review but I wanted to post to help others. The quality of care was good when my kids were very young with no "issues" and it's hard to not like Dr. Mamiko and her staff. However, she is more pro-intervention than other dentists, which I personally don't like esp for children. I was told that my eight year old at the time needed six fillings which was hugely shocking. We only got one done and thankfully saw another dentist who told us that fillings weren't necessary. Three years later, my kid still hasn't needed any additional fillings. read more

We have had great things to say about this practice for the past few years. They have always been friendly and competent. However, earlier this year the practice has raised their prices 40% versus last year. The increase was so high that even the generous dental insurance companies (e.g. Delta Dental) no longer cover them in network. I did not receive any notice of this until the week before our four year old's appointment. The practice did say they had sent a letter, but I guess it must have been lost in the mail. I asked for a one-time exception for them to honor their previous in network rates since I didn't have sufficient time to find a new dentist before her next scheduled checkup, but they declined this small courtesy to us, which was disappointing as we were long-time customers. It is a shame that the drive for increased profit soured what was an otherwise great experience. read more

Love love Dr. Mamiko and the hygienists but I had the SAME experience as other reviewers where the practice dropped our insurance (Premera, a major insurance company for this area) and never said a thing until giving us a huge bill. Never said "oh, by the way, it looks like we're out of network for you now". I finally realized the issue and immediately transferred our kids care. When my husband called to cancel their next appointment the receptionist asked if this was due to insurance so I don't think this is a surprise for them. On top of that, we had a receptionist rudely ask us to put a mask on my daughter, who was two and didn't need one per their own rules. I was masked myself. No apology, just "oh, she looked older." Again, the dental staff is amazing and so good with kids, but the way they manage their practice is really not great. read more

This place was great! From the moment I booked everything was super streamlined and so service oriented! Today we went in for our first appointment and the experience was fantastic. We were greeted by name, even though there were lots of people there. We checked in, sat down and just waited a short moment before Heather gathered us. It was quite clear that the team is talented at engaging with toddlers and making them feel as comfortable as possible. Heather spoke to my bub, engaged with her, let her touch the tools and explained everything she was doing. She went over all of the tooth things with me, did a cleaning and the Dr. Came in. For the first cleaning, you hold the baby in your lap and she leans into their lap and they do a quick cleaning. It went as good as it could. After the baby/kid gets a toy to make the whole experience of the clean joyful. After the doctor come into to do the teeth checking another reward- a sticker is provided. Final thing is going to the No Cavity Wall. The child is paraded around to the wall and they get to add their name. All in all, this was a great first dentist experience and I would highly recommend this spot. i only wish Covid was over so both care givers could attend the appointment. read more

BEWARE SHADY BILLING PRACTICES Dr. Mamiko and the hygienists are fine but look out for shady billing practices. We have moved on to another dentist after BPD suddenly stopped accepting our insurance and didn't tell us in advance of our appointment. When I showed up with my two kids for their cleaning, I was told I had a $400 credit on my account so my bill for the day would "only" be ~$180 -- higher than I had ever paid but we had been going there for years so proceeded and figured it'd be our last time there. I thought the credit was to make up for the jaw dropping cost of paying out of pocket, but months later I get a bill for $400. Turns out Premera had overpaid them for a previous service and they passed that along as a credit rather than recognizing the mistake and returning the overpayment to Premera. I told them I wouldn't have accepted services if I had known it was going to cost almost $600 but they have refused to own their mistake and eat the cost. I wonder now if they LOST insurance coverages because the insurers don't want to to work with them or found them to be overcharging/ submitting erroneously. read more

I took my daughter in awhile ago for a cleaning. When we were checking her in at the front desk we were asked the question of what her pronouns are which is quite disappointing being that this is a pediatric dental office and my child is 2 years old. I'm sure a lot of parents other then myself don't appreciate those types of questions being introduced to their kids when they are just trying to take their toddlers in for a dentist appointment and disappointedly end up leaving with your kid questioning what their pronouns are. These kids are young and just need to be left to being kids for now not worrying about their pronouns. Other then that the hygienist and dentist there are really good with kids. Dr. Mamiko and her staff have been excellent to our family. Her care and patience with our daughter is unmatched. Our daughter actually gets excited to see the smiling faces at Ballard Pediatric. The staff there took the time to really help guide our daughter through the check up process, calmed her nerves, and really just made the overall experience fun and enjoyable. There was a fire alarm and the entire staff had to stand out in the cold and Dr. Mamiko herself came out to give her patients and staff blankets. I don't recommend this dentistry at ALL. Because of how they run the business. Especially people at the front desk are not lack of knowledge of insurance, even they had my daughter's panoramic x-ray on the file that was taken previous dentistry 1 year ago. the panoramic x-ray usually covers every 3 years in general. They DIDN'T give us any explanation why they needed to take it again that costs us and any estimate in advance. The doctor and assistance should have explained to the parents before they schedule for taking the panoramic x-ray. The front office should have gave us an estimation as other dental offices do. They NEVER said and showed apologize about their fault. I also didn't like they asked us to contribute cost of the building walls between chairs because of the Covid19. but my kids treated in the regular area. they should pay that cost themselves, do not ask patients!!! They also ask parents leave the office while our kids get cleaning to reduce numbers of people in the office. It is a pediatric dentistry. how come parents are not allowed in the practice???? read more

These folks are amazing! Great care, and fantastic; they called the insurance company with just my name and got it all figured out, because we didn't know the information at all. The best thing about the practice is how much they really care and make your kids comfortable. With the recent COVID-19, the team as Ballard Pediatric Dentistry really stepped up with their precautions. When you enter they did temperature check on you. First thing I noticed was the front door gal constantly wiping all surfaces. All the team members have full PPE (face masks, face shields, head coverings, gowns). From their email, they also said they updated they air filtration system, UV sterilization, added extra oral suction. Beside all these precautions, I still felt the warmth and the smiles of the practice before COVID-19. At the first contact, they didn't inform me that they are out-of-network provider. They just said that they can accept my insurance. (Usually dental clinics notice to a new patient when he does not have in-network insurance.) After second treatment, (I already paid two times more than $770) I found 'out-of-network' message on my Cigna app, and called to them. They said that almost every treatment is the same or similar price except some treatment like white crown. But, at third visit, the first thing that Japanese front staff did is to push the 20% increased amount of bill from the previous one. She always insisted that I cannot get the care if I don't pay the estimated money in advance for each time. Her attitude is so rude and stubborn and I never forget her mean face. I paid all the money they want (I paid almost 4 times more than in-network dentistry) but I felt deceived and awful. They see my daughter as money not as a patient. Dr. Mamiko is very quick and knows well how to handle kids even though I didn't like they gave popsicles to my daughter right after treatments. And I'm worried that my daughter still feels pain with her crowned teeth sometimes and her gums bleed when she brushes. It could be okay with just check up, but be careful if you have to get some treatment there. And don't forget to mention the doctor's name at each appointment, because there are two doctor and they don't care your primary doctor. read more

My daughter's teeth are easily stained with black, and our family dentist had to spend a long time cleaning her teeth. He recommended Ballard Pediatric Dentistry to us, and so we went. Dr. Mamiko has a "magic bullet", which cleaned up her teeth quite nicely. Best pediatric dental office in Seattle! My kids feel welcome and comfortable here. They have seen a few different hygienists for routine cleanings as the office has grown over the last three years. Everyone is friendly, well educated, easy to understand and gentle with my kids. My daughter has had three stubborn baby teeth removed, two cavities filled, and a crown put on a molar. With each procedure Dr. Mamiko explains what will happen, she encourages my daughter and helps her feel brave, then praises her after a successful procedure. Last week was our 3rd time seeing Dr Mamiko for cleanings and general preventative care. Each time we have been in, Dr Mamiko has gotten more insistent about doing x-rays, which don't seem warranted for a 4.5yo child, with no cavities upon exam, with a low sugar diet, regular brushing and flossing and no previous or current problems with his teeth. I understand that it's a recommendation from the pediatric dental association but, ultimately, it's that, a recommendation. I offered to sign a release of liability form and she said that it wouldn't protect her against a potential law suit. I am a physician and I have patients sign these kinds of forms all of the time if they decline some sort of test or treatment that I feel is warranted. Her office is well designed for kids, her staff is friendly, but I find her dogmatism on the x-ray issue disrespectful of parents and patient rights. read more

Dr. Mamiko and her staff are absolutely wonderful. I took my son in for his first dental check up at one year and they had him laughing, literally, as he was getting his mouth examined. They provided me with education about his teeth coming in and gave me some literature. They have an awesome rewards card for kids to encourage good oral hygiene. When I was checking out I asked if they had any recommendations for adult dentists-the receptionist was new but she asked Dr. Mamiko and e-mailed me that afternoon. Dr. Mamiko is the best pediatric dentist around. Period. I have been taking my daughter to her for the past four years, and she is patient, calm, thorough, and extremely warm-hearted. My daughter is autistic so finding the right fit with doctors is a very big deal. Where to begin??? Dr. Mamiko and her team are exceptional in so many ways. I was nervous taking my preschool aged son in, since he'd been anxious and uncooperative at our family dentist, but immediately relaxed as soon as I walked in the door. The reception staff was warm and friendly and the waiting area was totally decked out with lots of toys and children's programming on the TV. I breathed a sigh of relief and thought "maybe this will be ok after all!" When the hygienist called his name and led him through a special kid-sized door, I could tell this was going to be a special experience. I was honestly shocked by how amazing our hygienist, Elise (I know I'm spelling it wrong, sorry), was with my son. He was immediately at ease and even smiling! She did such a good job of engaging him and keeping his interest as she went over basic brushing and flossing tips, in the most fun possible way, and was even able to do x-rays. I could not believe he was cooperating through all of this! Dr. Mamiko was equally fun and engaging with him. I appreciated her whole-health approach and also the way she interacted with him as a patient. I think it made him feel pretty special and the whole experience was a confidence boost for him. He actually left excited to floss his teeth... these people are miracle workers! The biggest thing I noticed throughout was that this was carefully curated to be an immersive and fun experience just for kids. I was referred here by a friend and Dr. Mamiko and staff are excellent with my two children. The facility is welcoming and parking has always been easy. Inside is an open, clean waiting room with several activities available to keep little ones busy while parents tend to business-related things. We don't wait long in the waiting room before we are brought back - through the small fun door for kids (and adults that want to fit through it ) - to what I call the teeth-cleaning area. They have model stuffed animals to practice and demonstrate teeth brushing with. The hygienists(Jola is our FAVORITE !) talk about teeth care with kids while they work on cleaning their teeth which is great reinforcement!! They do have tv distraction when a procedure will take longer, but no TVs in the main room mean kids pay attention to what the hygienists are saying! While I love the hygienists that work so incredibly well with my children, Dr. Mamiko is everything I could ask for in a doctor! She is professional and knowledgeable, yet approachable, down-to-earth, and open to questions, and discussions on concerns I have about the current state of my kids' teeth and potential future needs for any dental-related work. She took the time to explain the HISTORY behind a concern I had. When a doctor takes the time to really help me understand the rationale behind something, that service is invaluable. My 3 y.o. twins just had an appt with Dr. Mamiko and we love our new dentist! Front staff is organized and efficient, it was easy scheduling an appointment for our preferred time. They also emailed all the forms to me, so that I could fill them out ahead of time. Everyone in the office is amazing with kids. When they told me they would do x-rays, I was skeptical whether my girls would be able to sit through that, but the assistant turned everything into a game, so my 3 y.o. actually sat still for two sets of x-rays. Dr. Mamiko herself is very approachable, great with kids, doesn't rush the visit and takes the time to listen to the parents and answer all the questions. I have been twice in the last month, for each of my kids. We first went for my 6 year old, she had never had a dental check-up before. It went great! The receptionist was friendly and helpful, the hygienist, Heather, was really great, and Dr. Mamiko was friendly and gentle, as well as professional. We had a great experience. We went back a few weeks alter for my nervous 4 year old's turn, and I shouldn't have worried! I expected to need to sit with her for the x-rays and the cleaning, but I might as well have stayed in the waiting room. My 5 year old would barely let our family dentist near her. As far as we were able to get during every appointment was the tiny mirror to look at her teeth. When she complained of a tooth ache, I knew I had to take her somewhere that specialized in children. I would recommend Ballard Pediatric Dentistry to anyone who will listen. i highly recommend Ballard Pediatric Dentistry. The front desk staff was great. The assistant/hygienist Heather had an unbelievable amount of energy and patience. She was like the fun babysitter. She explains everything to the kid and parent. My 4 year old was great, but my 2 year old was still a little skeptical. Dr. Mamiko was super sweet and knowledgeable. She carefully explained everything to the kids and me, so I found that information helpful. The space is beautiful and very cool for kids. There is a special kid door to enter and leave the patient area. My 4 year old was super excited to watch a cartoon in the waiting area too, a rare treat! We had to cancel our initial appointments the day of because their baby brother was born that day. First off, I can't believe it's taken me this long to write a review. My daughters have been going to Dr. Mamiko for the past 4 years and all of us are beyond impressed with the experience. I have very strong willed kids and doctor's offices are usually a very stressful and challenging experience. From the moment you walk in, the office is very calm yet joyful and the women at the front desk always greet us in such a kind fashion. My daughters love the little yellow door, just their size, that leads to the cleaning area. Over the years we've been with a few different hygienist all of whom have been so patient, kind and informative and have made my girls feel comfortable. But really the cherry on top is Dr. Mamiko herself. My children are so excited to see her and they are proud to show her how well they have taken care of their teeth. Dr. Mamiko radiates love and wisdom and makes me feel confident that I'm providing my girls with the best dental care possible. As a family we have recommended Dr. Mamiko to many friends over the years. The only regret our friends have had is they wish they had gone to her sooner. read more

Our son was traumatized by a dentist many years ago and has not been able to get dental care since that time due to extreme panic despite trips to numerous dentists and specialists in the area. Dr. Mamiko has been absolutely incredible with him. He trusts her immensely. So much so that he was able get two teeth pulled under local anesthetic today. This was an amazing accomplishment.
