The accomodations were pretty good. The four of us were comfortable in our room with two queen beds. We had a nice balcony facing the town that we spent time of at the end of the day until the loud family in the neighboring room started hanging out in theirs... Too close, no privacy. Free coffee in the lobby was a plus but they were out of sugar the second and third mornings that we were there (even after we brought it to the staff's attention on the second morning). The food is just okay. It seems as though you pay for the atmosphere, not necessarily the quality. The drinks were pretty good, and I have nothing but positive things to say about the service we received in the restaurant and at the bar. The beach was sort of a free-for-all. On one side of us there were families with young kids playing in the sand, and on the other side of us there was a large group of twenty-somethings partying on the beach. We were lucky enough to witness one girl vomit and pass out because she had too much to drink. I'd blame it on kids being kids, but you're not allowed to bring outside alcoholic beverages, so I'm more inclined to blame over-servince, irresponsible hotel personnel. Just left my stay at ballards and I was disappointed in more ways than I thought humanly possible. Firstly, what kind of deluxe hotel room doesnt have a mini fridge or damn microwave to make my late night ramen. Secondly, I went down to the beach and asked if because Im paying 700 a night could I get a chair and they wanted me to pay full price for it.. the least you can do is give guest staying there free chairs, so pathetic. The biggest issue I had was theres no lock on the door.. how is this even legal??!??!?!!?!?? Mind blowing . Everything was outdated and gross. If youre thinking of coming here dont and head over to the block island beach house instead. End rant. read more

I have been coming to Ballard's for over 10 years. This place is always packed. This is expected for its location and what it has to offer. Live music, beach bar and dining, close to the ferry etc. I have never had such a bad dining experience here so it is usually my go to place. NOT ANYMORE! We arrived to the island around 7:30pm, checked into our hotel and then decided to grab a bite to eat at Ballard's. We had a couple friends who were already at the bar there so they asked what time the kitchen closed (9:45pm) so we start the venture over to Ballard's. It was around 8:45pm when we arrived. We requested a seat outside. Sure not a problem. We sit down and then we see the waiter speed walking over. He tossed menus in front of each of us and said he would be right back. He came back after about 1 minute and told us we had 2 minutes to decide. He did not take a drink order from any of us and told us we had to go to the bar if we wanted drinks. All I wanted was a soda. After 2 minutes he came back and quickly took our orders and ran to the kitchen. We then all had to get up from our dining table and to order drinks from the bar. This was another awful experience. The bartender took forever to acknowledge us (the bar was not busy). I told my friends to order me a coke and ran to the restroom. I came back and they had still not been waited on. She came over and told us we have to sit down at the bar to be served. We nicely explained that we are dining at a table outside but had to come here to get a drink. Her response was that we can bring them outside but if we do not sit we will not be waited on because the CDC is in the back watching us.... meanwhile, no one in the bar had a mask on.... We go back to our table and the food quickly arrives. Honestly, I was nervous that it was under cooked. The food was very delicious but also very small portions for the expensive price. The waiter kept watching as we ate and then started closing all the doors except for one. Then another group of people arrive and they had the same experience as us. They too were confused as to why they had to eat outside but go inside to get their drinks. Normally I drink two beverages with dinner (whether alcoholic or non alcoholic) but not this time. I was too scared to go back to the bar for another soda! My friend was actually saying how uncomfortable she felt by our waiter and wanted to get out of there ASAP. Anyway, we still tipped the waiter and the bartender 20% even with the terrible service we received. We were out of there by 9:45pm and went to The National where they had live music and great entertainment. read more

Stayed there for a few days in June. It's very overpriced for what it is, but they have the nerve to charge paying hotel guests for beach chairs. I have stayed at all manner of beach hotel, from lower quality all the way to 5 star resorts. And this is the only establishment where they charge paying hotel guests to rent a beach chair. And it's not because they were in high demand- they had piled up, unused beach chairs, to try to get their guest to pay an extra $18 or whatever. I'll for sure stay someplace else next time. read more

We spent one night in the hotel as a last minute getaway. The short of it is that it's more a place to party, drink and relive spring break than a nice hotel. This was our first clue that this isn't much of a hotel. We paid a $100 extra for a "harborview" in which my wife asked the representative if we are overlooking out on a parking lot? She said no. We get there to find out that we are in fact looking out on the parking area where everyone walks to get to the hotel and where delivery trucks park. Yes the "harborview" was to the right, but definitely not worth the $100. We complained but since they only have SIX rooms (yep! you read that right a hotel with only 6 rooms) they couldn't move us nor would they refund us the view money. Instead the manager gave us a $50 gift card (originally she offered $25). So save your money on the "view." The room was very nice and modern. Very comfy bed. We had a great nights sleep! We were worried about the yachts and partygoers but the windows were very well insulated. Ha! The room and especially the bathroom was oddly large. The shower was the size of a twin bed in which there is only one shower head and the water pressure was god awful! I never been in a shower in which I stood feet away from the water in ordering to grab a bottle of soap. We did eat breakfast there (had to use the $50 gift card somehow), which was surprisingly good. Pancakes, eggs, and sausage were all done perfectly! Service was prompt. Odd though that when I asked for milk with my coffee (they give you the half and half creamers), the very nice and polite server, said he "looked everywhere but couldn't find any milk." What!?! Ballards is more of bar/club than a hotel. You can safely say that this is a great place to party given the swarms of mostly 20 somethings arriving for 4th of July festivities. There is a tiki bar on the beach. I saw corn hole being set up. There is big inside bar and dance area. Yes they say it's a "private beach" but it's open to anyone wanting to go. Definitely worth the stay if you plan to party. Otherwise go somewhere else. read more

Came back to Ballard's again this summer, as I had so much fun last summer. Wow, have they totally renovated the place! They tore out the old bathrooms and put in new ones, including ones with showers. The bar is all sparkly with pretty seaglass tiles on it. I had the naked lobster roll, with a side of onion rings. There was a ton of lobster in the lobster roll. I actually pulled out almost a whole claw! The onion rings tasted like they were made in house, they had just the right amount of crunch to them. This year I was able to get bud light lime for my drink. Last year they didn't have bud products, so this made me happy. I can't wait to go back again. The room was nice and the staff provided excellent service. We were there the weekend before Memorial Day, so it was still off season, but the staff went out of their way to make a pineapple drink for my fiance's birthday, even though they weren't serving them so early in the season. Everything closed up pretty early, but that was more an issue of when we were there rather than anything else. read more

We were excited for a weekend in Block Island, we had booked a night a Ballard's as it seemed to be one of the nicer hotels in BI. The check in experience was all over the place, We requested to check in early and they did get us in around 30 min early. But once we checked in we quickly noticed that the room was not very clean. Not let me say the room was very nice, large, and updated. But, the shower was very dirty and looks as if it hadn't been cleaned in awhile. Once we got into bed for the night, we found ourselves sleeping in a bunch of sand. Hopefully the sheets were changed from the prior guest, but they were full of sand. Very poor. Understand that we didn't go to the beach or come in contact with any sand.... Also, we paid extra for a harbor view Balcony room. Our balcony was nice but the view was directly over the parking lot and was totally ruined by the employees smoking and yelling right next to and below us. We woke up the next morning, expecting and looking forward to their "beachfront breakfast". We came downstairs around 9 o'clock to see the place empty, and when I asked about the breakfast they acted as if I was crazy. We ended up going to the National Hotel for much of our needed amenities. For over 300$ a night, I would never consider this location again. Take note the biggest issue was the cleanliness and they have very few rooms, I would say around 6 or 8. Overall poor experience. Wouldn't recommend. read more

I notice there aren't many reviews about the hotel/rooms, so I wanted to add this one after a fabulous night here in June. Our room (I believe it was room 6) was a corner unit with a huge private balcony overlooking the harbor and ferry. It was truly beautiful sitting out there watching the sun set. The room itself was enormous, modern and very clean. One of the better hotel rooms I've been in anywhere, and 10x better than the majority of rooms on BI. It is not a bed and breakfast hotel room, but rather a very modern updated room. The shower and bathroom area are also quite impressive. My only complaint is that the small single showerhead was no where near enough for such a huge shower... it definitely needs a rain showerhead or at least double showerheads. Overall, it's convenient to the ferry, it's right on the beach with access to the famed Ballard's beach and beach bar (which we loved), and the room itself was spectacular. We will definitely be staying here again!! read more

The hotel was great, nice rooms with great atmosphere with ok beds, better than the Surf Hotels beds. And just overall beautiful, modern, beach style hotel. I was overall appalled at the service here. I had ordered a plate of wings and a couple drinks for my table and it took roughy 50 minutes to come out. I had happened to eat inside due to the heat and I had seen roaches.This place makes McDonald's look like fine dining, this is a monstrosity and I am more than upset with basically everything about this place. As for the inn, I would love to say I was pleased with the service but it appears my room had a glory hole in it. My kids were left confused and I was left disgusted. I would rather sleep in the goodwill donation truck than this hell hole of a place. I'm honestly not the type to write reviews but this was beyond ridiculous! My friends and I have been staying at Ballard's for our girls weekend for 4 summers. The first summer was great but the service and attention to detail has gone way down. This year, upon arrival we noticed sand all over our hotel room floor and dust hanging from the ceiling fan. We only had 2 chairs on our balcony (all others had 4) and when we asked for another chair since there were 3 of us, they brought up a plastic patio chair. The first night when my friend got into bed, there was sand in the sheets, which to me, indicates that they did not change the sheets between guests. The first morning we went to breakfast and came back to our room, we discovered that housekeeping left our door ajar, and anyone could have walked in. We had cash, charge cards, jewelry, and an iPad in the room. This was totally unacceptable. When I complained about all of the above mentioned situations, the manager just said she would talk to housekeeping. She didn't offer us any compensation. She could have at least offered us 3 free beach chairs for the day. For the amount of money my friends and I pay to stay at Ballard's for an extended weekend (always 3 nights), our stay was very disappointing. I feel I wasted my money and did not have the enjoyable weekend I paid for. If you are thinking of going to Block Island, do yourself a favor and DO NOT STAY AT BALLARD'S. The convenience is nice but is not worth it. It's just as easy to stay at one of the other places nearby. Next year, we will definitely not be booking with Ballard's. read more

This was my first time in Block Island for vacation and a wedding and I'm so glad we were told to stay at Ballard's. First of all this place is right on the beach! What's there not to love? We had drinks right by the water and dinner was really good especially if you like seafood. Their strawberry daiquiris and pineapple drinks are so good. I recommend them!! Our room was also really nice. It was kept clean and was pretty big. The bathroom was nice too. I loved the nice size walk in shower. The staff here was very friendly and answered any questions we had. I would definitely come back here for another vacation. Nice and relaxing which was EXACTLY what I needed. read more

I had been to Ballard's before in the height of the season and had a great time lying on the beach drinking cocktails from the tiki bar, so my friend and I decided to stay there for a week in June. BIG MISTAKE. It was cold and rainy, which isn't anyone's fault, but because of that, the place was deserted, so they just decided to close the restaurant/bar whenever they wanted, like at 5-6 pm. So when we traipsed back for dinner after walking around town in the rain, we were stunned to find it was closed and had to head back out in the rain for dinner. The staff were extremely unhelpful - totally didn't care about anything: the restaurant closing and us having to go out in the rain, the fact we had cold showers because silly us, we didn't realize you have to let the water run for half an hour before it reaches luke warm, or that the power company was going to turn off the power from 8-11 am so we would have to get up at 6 to even take a hot shower. And by the way, if you're not going to serve breakfast, the LEAST you could do is have a coffee pot in the room! Or a phone. Imagine being stuck out at Ballard's in a storm, no phone in the room, and no one at the desk all night. Would you feel safe? Bottom line, do not stay unless it's highest of the high season (which is extremely pricey) and even then, it would be better to stay at they National and walk over to use the beach. It's not like staying here would get you any discount on beach chairs or drinks because it DOES NOT. read more
