What a great place! I have been trying to find a local deli with nitrate-free cold cut meat (ham, in this case) for lunches during the summer, and Baltic Deli carries 4 varieties of ham that is made in small batches and is preservative-free! The store and deli are both extremely clean and tidy, and the staff was very helpful with my order as I went back and forth between the store and the deli counter. I bought some of each ham to try them all. I also picked up some sausage at their recommendation and they are AWESOME! Lunch today was some nice fresh rye-wheat bread ("babuni" if you see it, it's crusty but soft on the inside and massive), sausage slices, and sauerkraut I picked up in the store. So good. Oh, and an apricot strudel (again, small batches with only a handful of ingredients and no preservatives) that I also enjoyed with some coffee. Speaking of the store: they carry a lot of things that I know are hard to find, particularly (for me) dark rye bread, and other loaves that are very healthy and not processed, and LOTS of pickled vegetables They also have all sorts of other goods I'm sure I'll be slowly trying over the coming visits, and I have to say the prices are excellent. There are many sandwich shops in this area, there are many produce shops aswell, many with more notoriety than this place. The selection is comprable, the prices are the same or better, the quality is the same or better, but the experience?, "The Triangle" is full of polite service, The Baltic is however the authentic experience, the two ladies make lovely food and either praise you or curse you in a language that I question if even they can understand. If you are a fan of small businesses with good food worked by real people then this is a great place to check out amongst the other great places with good people in this wonderful little neighborhood. I'm so glad I found this place! It was recommended to me by numerous Redditors who cited this place as THE location to get fresh kielbasa and various other polish fare. The shop was small, but mighty in their overwhelming selection! The pricing wasn't too bad either, and the kielbasa was so tasty I was tempted to eat it all before cooking it for dinner. I've been coming here for 25 years, but what I saw today is going to make me stay away for the next year at least. I walk in, and I see the two women behind the counter AND a customer, all maskless. There's a small plexiglass division at the register, but it's totally just for looks and wouldn't stop anything. It made me feel unsafe. I turned around and left and won't be going back. This really shouldn't be that difficult to keep yourselves and your customers safe. I went to Euromart instead, a few blocks away, and EVERYONE was wearing masks there. The Baltic Deli is an easy walk from the Andrew T stop on the red-line. If you are of Polish heritage, it is worth making your way to Southie to both buy some nice Polish commodities and to check out the Polish Catholic Church in the neighborhood. The Baltic is probably the most accessible deli in the area for folks not from Poland. Its customer base includes many Americans and the staff easily speaks English. The people that own it also operate Cafe Polonia on the same block, which is really an excellent restaurant in all respects. The Baltic has a very solid selection of all things from Poland from food to magazines to sundraes to beer. The deli and pastry selection are quite good. If you go at peak local Pole times, like Thursday evening or Friday or Saturday, you will be in line with Polish speakers who are from the community. That's a good sign. Try some of the juices from Poland, pick a sausage by sight, and make sure to point to the pastry that looks yummiest. You will enjoy. read more

Thank you so much for a very good lunch at a good price for the amount of sandwich I got. You can tell when someone cares about making your sandwich - the nice polish lady almost demanded I have a little olive oil on mine after declining on mayo or mustard - she knows that Polish cold cuts tend to be longer aged and therefore drier... I had to have something "wet" on my sandwich. Turned out to be great. Just a little olive oil on the "Polish Sandwich" was just what I needed to kill that late workday hunger. Despite being ravenous, I only finished half... so they gave me a lotta meat. Very small but also quite well stocked polish food market. Lots of jarred goods and chocolates, some frozen goods, and of course, a good selection of Kielbasa and Pierogies! I really like this market. They have a lot of Polish goodies and today I came over to get pączki (doughnuts) as it is Polish Fat Thursday. They were with plum and raspberry fillings. So delicious!!! I will say that the store is super cute, great selection (pastry, canned food, freezer food, even toiletries), so naturally I spent way more money in here than I originally intended, I couldn't help myself! I went early in the morning to pick up a few dozen patchki's (spelling?) for my family before Fat Tuesday. Patchki's were just o.k., not the best i've had. But the other treasures I left with will be the reason I return. They also have a great deli i'd like to try one day...reminded me of Europe! read more

How have I not reviewed Baltic Deli yet? I love it here! My gentleman caller is half Polish, so every once in a while we come here together and I get to be the wide-eyed brown girl in the Polish store. There's so much to see! Fancy bread (lemon poppy seed foreverrrrr), sausage and fresh cheese, all kinds of gingerbread, frozen pierogi, packets of insta-borscht, and all the pickled things you could ever want. It's always a struggle for me to control myself -- I'm a sucker for an ethnic grocery store. If you get nothing else at Baltic Deli, get yourself a bag of krówki (pronounced kroof-kee). It's Polish milk fudge. POLISH MILK FUDGE, GUYS! It's like a less sweet dulce de leche. Sooooo good. That, and a big jar of pickled herring. Too legit to quit. read more

5-star based on the type of food that it has to offer. Overally it's close to a 5-star regardless, but it's a deli and shop for authentic Polish cuisine. The frozen homemade pierogis are delicious. I try and stop in here before heading home to bring a few bags up to Maine where it's impossible to find good homemade pierogis. They have some good polish loaf, too. The deli has a bunch of meats available and a huge selection of kielbasa. I've had a few of the homemade desserts and they are always delicious. Friendly family run store from what I can tell. I came to Baltic deli to get the fixings to create a yummy Polish Easter meal. Since I wanted the food to be as fresh as possible, I thought I would be slick and wait until Sat to get the food. I knew Sunday that it would be closed, so in my head this idea sounded great. As I am walking into the place and thinking how smart I was to do it this way, I am hit by a line that is going around the store. The line started at the door!!! Yikes, the first thing I realized is that other mom's clearly have smart babies too, and they all had the same idea I did. As I started to ponder my next move, I was hit with the smells that only a real deli could produce. I was drawn to the back of the line and waited amounst my masses for it to be my turn. As the time moved on, I hear a lot of Polish, but also a good amount of English being spoken. There is a family in front of me and the son is complaining about the wait. The mom quickly dismisses his comments by saying this place has the best kielbasa in town, we are not going anywhere. It took me 1 hour to get from the back of the line the front. Upon reaching the cash register, I had acquired the following: Kielbasa: 5 stars Babka: 3.5 stars Assortment of Polish beers: 5 stars Polish pickles: 5 stars Krocuska: 5 stars Guwimpki: 1.5 stars (really disappointed with this) Bread: 4 stars Homemade pirogi: 4.5 stars (I liked the meat better than the cheese one) Strawberry and cheese blinzes: 4 stars 1 hour and $62 dollars later, I was out of there. I cooked it all up yesterday and could barely move for at least an hour after that. I will certainly be back, but not the day before a major holiday. read more

Back home in Chicago, it seems like you can find a polish deli every few blocks. But in Boston, it's a different story. In college without a car, I'd make the monthly trek via the red line to the "Polish" neighborhood in Boston to pick up pickles, horseradish, teas, and of course, pierogi. Other than the fact that it's one of the only polish delis in the area, I like the Baltic 'cause quite frankly the owners and staff all speak enough english that I can get by. Go around Eastertime and get their paczki--I've been known to be parked outside waiting for the owners to unlock the doors on Paczki Day to grab a few dozen for work. read more

Great little Polish deli, and honestly, I enjoy the food here more than the caf across the street. The mix of fresh and imported products allows for a wide spectrum of experimentation, and the frugal nature of much Polish cooking keeps prices reasonable and room for exploration high. The sausages are terrific, although it's best to read up on the differences between them before you go-- my Polish is severely limited, and I think perhaps even if it were better, the (sometimes really, really attractive) deli girls don't know the subtle differences between the kielbasa variations. Regardless, I would concentrate on the deli counter and frozen prepared foods above all else, then the breads, then the imported products. I am not wild about their desserts, because they are made in a somewhat rustic, not-very-sweet Polish style. They are authentic, but could still use some improvement. One item in particular to enjoy is their boudin blanc, aka ask for the "veal hot dogs." Absolutely unreal deliciousness in natural casings. Now they even carry some beer from the region: check out the Zywiec (pronounced zhiv-yets) and Okocim (oh-koh-cheem) rather than the Tyr or other inferior brands. I love that all ethnic food markets are pretty much the same. I went to Baltic with a co-worker during lunch (her mom and babcia were in the mood for headcheese) and I was pleasantly surprised to see that this little Polish deli is just like the Korean markets I frequent. The kielbasa selection is amazing. (The dried kielbasa is really good.) On Wednesdays they get their donuts delivered -- and they are all really good. (The raspberry filled with a little powdered sugar on top? Heavenly). I keep going back for the homemade frozen pierogi. Before coming to Baltic my pierogi knowledge was minimal (Mr. T's anyone?). The potato & cheese pierogis are amazing. They fry up in seconds in the pan and are delicious. read more

I did a bad thing... Six years ago when I lived a block from here, I started buying cheese babkas and bringing them to the family holidays. Now my aunt won't let me in the house without bringing one. Since I live far from here now, it is a pain in the butt. However, this is only place I have found that makes the authentic babkas and pierogis of my youth, so I guess I will have to keep traveling to the old hood. In summary, this place is super authentic. It's a great place to stop by for Polish/European things. They have a good selection of your standard jams, cookies, breads, etc. They also offer fresh deli meats (mmm smoked ham) and even some pastries and home-made things. Best of all? They do have fresh frozen pierogi in their freezer. If you think Mrs T's is good, you are missing out on heaven. The service was excellent. The girls were friendly and attentive. I can't believe I have never been here, considering I lived down the road from it for 5 years! So this week was the week! I went, I found parking and I explored. You are first greeted with a variety of breads and (I don't know the english word) what looks like Potica to me, kind of a sweet bread with a swirl of dessert throughout. As much as I wanted one, I didn't get it. Then you walk down an aisle of beverages, teas, sauce mixes, pickles, pickled vegetables, pates etc. Pretty much, every turn you make you are greeted with wines and liquers which all sounded lovely. Way in the back is the refrigerated stuff, cheeses, sausages, Kefir, butters, milk, Salat Olivier (YUM) eggs and beer. Oh and the frozen part had a lovely variety of pierogies, kind of expensive though, but let me tell you, DELICIOUS. Up the next aisle looked like candies and chocolate of all kinds. Milka, Kinder.... And of course the deli across from that. Ok the deli was confusing, everything has a sign but you still can't tell which is which, but if something looks good, just ask and they will share. I ended up getting veal loaf (German call it Leberkaese) and a fresh kilebase. The loaf is just ok...I would get it if I HAD to, but prefer similar from other places. Kielbase is pretty damn good, I grilled it, burnt one end of it (oops) but it was still dripping with moist n meatiness inside. The pierogies are delicious as well as the salat Olivier. I also got a container of stuffed cabbage, but have not yet tried them, will this week! And lastly everything except the pierogies were VERY decently priced, I was quite happily surprised! After Cari's review, I went just to get a babka on the way back from eating at Cafe Polonia. Having been to Poland, I am partial to the food and definitely was interested in all of the items they had on display. Unfortunately, I was also flying the next morning so I wasn't interested in carrying too much back to DC. This is the REAL DEAL. I was almost in despair not being able to find a true Eastern European purveyor in Boston. It is true I am not by birth an Eastern European, but this has not stopped me in my life having a very warm place in my heart for a good meal based on potatoes, cabbage and meat. You will find in this market, among other amazing imports, true Latvian rye bread, both the dark and light varieties. One thing to be aware of, however, is that the bread is sometimes sold out: so a quick call before making a trip over would be advised. Great local business to support with very friendly staff. I enjoy the sliced turkey breast and gouda cheese by the pound. Their sandwiches are also yummy. The European potato chips are also great with sandwiches! The meat perogies (packaged ones, not the homemade ones) are the best and cook very quickly. They are on par with the ones I had in Poland. They also sell Polish sausages of course. The chocolate is also to die for, and reasonably priced (although the Kinder brand is a bit pricy) and to my knowledge it's the only place in the area with their selection. Their "coffee" cake (which is not like American coffee cake at all) is amazing, it is layered with a delicious whipped topping. read more

I found my Polish heritage in this place! After a stay in the hospital May of 2010, I had a Polish Nurse, who laugh and joked with me about being a Polski, and told me about the song "She likes Keilbasa better than fish" (Google it). The day I got out of the hospital I did a search for Polish Deli's and found this place, and it was worth the 40 minute ride. The cured Keilbasa was phenomenal, the Alexandra Frozen Periogis( I believe come from Chicago) were absolutely phenomenal, boil them for the recomended time and then eat with some of the keilbasa fried with onion and some of the Horseradish with beets, it was one of the best dinners I ever had, and my family can cook. The Alexandra Frozen Seilsa dumplings are also unbelivable. There was this Cheese Bread similar to a moneky bready that was awesome, and the Blintzes from the deli case were sooo good. There were the small thin dried keilbasa that was the best snack food that would blow the doors off a slim jim. YOU HAVE TO TRY THE GULUMPKIS too, they were a lilttle salty, but they were so delicous. I've been to this place four times since last May, and another big trip is coming in the very near future. read more

I gave the Baltic Deli & Cafe many tries but the employees working there, their customer service and friendliness and non existing Covid-19 health adjustments cannot be compared to the other two Polish supermarkets in close proximity: EuroMart down the street and DJ´s Market and Deli on Boston St. I will happily spend my money exclusively at these two markets from now on. And here is why: Every time I am in the Baltic Deli, I feel as if the employees discriminate me because I am not Polish, nor Eastern European, nor US-American. As soon as I open my mouth, order something in English, and my foreign accent can immediately be assigned to a certain European country - maybe not one they like the people from (?) - I feel this slight ignorance, this slight delay in service, this slight dumb behavior as if they wouldn't understand me clearly. I pointed at a liverwurst knowing that I like this one over the one next to it, and being a tad cheaper. Three times I pointed at it to make sure to get what I wanted. The employee dealing with me, then talks something in Polish to the other employee who then took one from behind the liverwursts customers can´t see, and wants to start to cut it. I intervened, and said that it is not the right one. Eye-rolling, as if it is my problem that they cannot fulfill a customer´s wish. Reluctant they put it back, and cut the one I wanted. On another occasion, I asked them politely with my very first order of some slices (10) of salami to wrap all the following orders (2 slices and 6 small kabanosy) inside one paper making it more efficient, saving them time, me space in my bag, and saving wrapping material which is my little contribution to less trash. The employee protested, and defended her actions that she couldn't put all the price stickers on (EuroMart does bundle all in one paper for me all the time.). Her behavior challenged me not to give in even though other customers had to wait longer in line, and even though this employee fret about my request with her two fellow employees in Polish. Eye-rolling again, provocative sighing in addition. In the end, I got what I wanted. Covid-19. The last time, I was in there, maybe mid May 2020, none of the employees wore a face mask. They had not even put up a shield to protect the cashier. (EuroMart and DJ´s Market introduced many adjustments to their customers very early in the shutdown, exemplary.) I have no idea what happened to this shop. I remember that 10 years ago or so, I felt always welcome in there, and had a little chat with them, or we joked. It´s not there anymore. read more

I don't know Polish food but this place makes me wish I did. It's clean and friendly. It's full of all kinds of foodstuff, both commercially packaged and locally baked or made. All kinks of meats and desserts and breads and jars and candies. It also has Polish beer and what looks like wines. And books and swag and... I went in hungry, with plans to get a sandwich, and they were great. They helped me with the choices -- as I said, I don't know Polish meats -- and offered suggestions. The sandwich was very good, with three kinds of polish meats, tomatoes, romaine lettuce, horseradish spread on a bulky roll. I would have liked to try the baguette but I forgot to ask ... The weak spots? Onions on the sandwich (after I asked that they be omitted) and inedible casing left on the salami used for the sandwich. It's forgivable but makes for hard eating and dims an otherwise excellent sandwich. I'm wondering if it would be rude to ask them to remove it before putting it on the sandwich next time, for there surely will be a next time. read more

can't get enough of this place. full deli for really good sandwiches, lots of jars of veggies and sauces, huge selection of frozen goods, homemade soups in quart containers, fresh pastries and breads, polish beers, meads, even a recent addition of polish books and little seasonal trinkets. my mom's 100% polish so whenever i go home to visit i bring her some goodies from here which she LOVES. my favorites are: -the fresh kielbasa (keh-BAHS-ee for those in the know). you have to cook it yourself which is a fairly long (~1hr) process but it's SO worth it. there's a special way to do it so if you wanna give it a shot feel free to PM me cuz i've done it about 10 times so far and have it pretty down. i've cooked it for several friends who'd only had hillshire farms kielbasa before and they were blown away. pretty cheap too. -frozen pierogies. i usually get the potato & cheese, cabbage, and sauerkraut. way better than anything you'll find in conventional supermarkets -fresh gwumpkies (stuffed cabbage) which you can find in the cooler right on the right hand side as you walk in. i think these are the same ones that they serve hot at cafe polonia. which means they're killer good. and the ladies are pretty helpful if you need to know which type of kielbasa to get or something. just don't ask the ridiculously hot blonde chick for advice on actual cooking. i did that once and was left with a "wtf there's no way this is right...." moment in the kitchen that evening. you actually probably shouldn't ask ridiculously hot blonde chicks for advice on anything that doesn't relate to shopping or crying but that's a story for another day. read more

After neither Bazaar's Russian-style pierogi's nor Wegmans American imperialist ones made the cut, I decided it was finally time to schlep down to Dorchester and give Baltic a whirl. They sell their own house-made pierogis in Market Basket ziploc bags, it felt more like I had gotten a thank you from a neighbor, and that kraut and mushroom mix was no joke. I'm Polish in the way that the Kardashians are Armenian. Read: food and occasionally attending an ethnic church. The neighborhood I grew up in also had a sizable Polish population, and several markets set up just like this. I only wish they did hot food in addition to their pastries, which by the way also taste like they were baked that morning by a tough-as-nails Polish chick. Baltic is the real deal, I just wish that the Polish community of Boston could move somewhere a bit closer to me. read more

They don't have as much in stock as Euromart down the road, but they still have a massive selection of breads, teas, and the ubiquitous Pickled Veg In Jars. Baltic deli is delicious. The many choices of deli items to choose from makes this a deli utopia. Got some essentials for my thanksgiving get together of friends who could not leave town to go see family so we made our own thanksgiving piecing together items people brought to my place. We had many of the sides and cutlets from Baltics and I had some good feedback from my friends. Super good service and nice counter help. Will use them again for the Super Bowl party I am planning. I don't understand all the 5 star ratings here. The place makes a decent sandwich. Decidedly average. The desserts look delicious, but aren't really that great. They do seem to have a good selection of polish meats and goods, and the prices are reasonable. And the people are nice. Since the new management took over the store, I will not be going back. The, I think, new manager (blond, short hair, bigger woman) there is one of the worst people I've ever met. I work with people every day, and my motto is "client is the most important" and apparently no one taught her that manner. I'M YOUR CLIENT, TREAT ME WITH RESPECT and not like a piece of trash!!!!!!! I've also noticed that they don't care about their meat, and after they drop it on the dirty floor, they just put it right back. DISGUSTING!!!!! I'm so disappointed, wish the old owner was back.
