We recently worked with Virginia's to cater a dinner for 15-20 people. We had some experience already - Arda and her team had provided a sandwich platter on short notice for a school event, and they had also catered a teacher appreciation lunch for our elementary school in Brookline. However, this was the first time I worked with them to cater a private event, and it was a wonderful experience! Arda provided a lot of helpful advice for the menu, and everything was ready for pickup at the time we planned in advance. The dishes were beautifully plated, so all I had to do at home was to put the dishes out. Other dishes - apps and entrees - were in foil pans ready to warm in the oven. It couldn't have been easier. Everything was very fresh and looked great, and our guests enjoyed all the dishes. Would definitely recommend and work with Arda again! read more

Arda and her family donated meals for our entire staff at the Armenian Nursing & Rehab Center! What a treat it was and so very much appreciated. The chicken was so tender with nice spices served over a vegetable rice accompanied by a super crisp fresh salad with delish balsamic dressing! Also so many choices of sparkling waters! It was all individually packaged, boxed and organized for easy no contact access for the staff. She also was wonderful at communicating with me on the menu and delivery. I can imagine with her level of professionalism, it would be a breeze to work with her on any kind of catering event. All we can say is thank you Arda! Your kindness, generosity and delicious food is truly appreciated, especially by our hard-working staff. I've only tried baked goods, such as their apple tart. It was decently sized and the apples were a good combination of sweet/tart. The crust was a little soggy, however. The decor and the establishment itself is cute and warm. They do a good job with what they have. The guy in front was patient, careful, and informative. A lovely little boutique sandwich shop with a ton of variety. The woman working there was incredibly welcoming and pleasant to interact with. As someone who absolutely loves bread I was blown away by both the presentation and depth of breads available. Ultimately went with the french baguette and was very pleased. My sandwich was made fast - I mean like within two minutes and it tasted delicious. My main qualm was amount of stuff actually between the pieces of bread. I think it was one piece of lettuce, one tomato, and like two slices of chicken. It felt very minimalistic. Did it fill me up? Nice little store with sandwiches, salads, bakery goods, and etc. Disclaimer: I only tried their chicken Caesar salad so far and will probably go back to try their infamous sandwiches I've read so many reviews about: -The salad was pretty cheap, but the quality was average and the portion size was small. The homemade croutons were a bit stale so it didn't really go well with the rest of the salad, but the zesty dressing was delicious! They also carry clear flour bread which is great! I had the 7 grain bread with my sandwich. The sandwich had a great combination of flavors and none overpowered another. They worked really well together to create quite the delicious sandwich! 4 stars because there are no public restrooms and they advertise a sandwich/soup special but there is no menu of what soups they may be carrying that day. I take my hour lunch break in this area sometimes so I like to change it up and come here a couple times a week. Sometimes if I'm in a hurry I'll grab a pre-made salad that is in the fridge, it's around $5ish and that is a good price for Brookline. Though the other day I paired the salad with a Lentil soup and the soup really fell short. I was expecting to see a thick soup with actual lentils but it was watery and way too much turmeric was added to it. Boo! I will go back to KooKoo Cafe for when I crave Lentil Soup because their's is incredible. I got a few sandwiches there, and they've pretty been decent. The bread is fantastic on the sandwiches, very fresh! There's definitely a middle eastern influence with most of their sandwiches and food offerings, which is just fine by me because I love Middle Eastern food. The women who works there is very, very nice. Eh, but the guy (I'm assuming her spouse?) who works there is not pleasant to interact with. He seems irritable and rushes too fast. Maybe he should stick to working in the back? Good selection of quality chips and drinks. And not that I don't love the earth and recycling, BUT I love that they sneak using plastic bags for your to-go order, because sometimes you just need a fucking plastic bag! read more

I went in one day and something heavenly was cooking. She said it was quiche, but unfortunately it was not ready. I went back to try it. This is my ideal sandwich. This is my perfect sandwich place. The epitome of fresh, an even distribution of unique "gourmet" ingredients, and hearty, homemade bread. I'm talking sundried tomato & eggplant spread, sprouts (!!! my fave), cucumbers, artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers, basil mayo, avocado, portabello mushrooms, kalamata olives, and more. These are the kinds of sandwiches I would make for myself at home, perfectly capped with bread from the Clear Flour bakery (I had mine on buckwheat walnut. Hello - amazing!) On French, these large sammys will shower the table with a hail of crunchy crust after each bite From the chalkboard menu, I ordered a turkey samwich. I absolutely love this small, welcoming neighborhood gem. I've visited maybe a dozen times and have always gotten a sandwich, never once have I been disappointed. The different combinations offer a punch of flavor and are full of healthy ingredients, assembled with care and attention. It doesn't hurt that they source their bread from Clear Flour (try the Olive Loaf, f'real). Maybe the best part of these visits, though, is the friendly staff. You're always greeted with a smile and given the best service at this family-run business. Every time I walk out I feel better for having supported them and I feel as though it's money more than well spent for a truly satisfying lunch and overall experience. In addition to the ~20 sandwiches written on the chalkboard, there's a panini menu and a breakfast menu which I've yet to try but will report back when I do. In the display case you'll find a variety of pre-made salads (caprese, pastas, couscous, etc.) and desserts, and a scattering of jars filled with delicious-looking baked goods. In the cooler you can grab Spindrift sodas, Nantucket Nectars and maybe some other cold beverages. As others have mentioned, it's a small space - there are 3 or 4 tables - so plan accordingly if you're looking to eat in (I always get mine to go). And with good reason: the food is yummy, the selection is wide enough that I don't get bored and the service is impeccable. Everything at Virginia's is made in-house by the owner. This includes a variety of hot and cold appetizers, soups and sandwiches, as well as a tempting selection of pastries, cookies and muffins. Everything is always fresh and delicious. The cafe is owned and operated by the most delightful, hardworking woman who remembers all of her customers by name. On one occasion, I forgot my wallet and, without a second thought, she offered to let me pay the next day. When I tried to pay her the next day, she insisted that it was on her. I have seen her do similar things for other customers many times. This is somebody who truly appreciates her customers and shows it. So besides guaranteeing yourself a fabulous lunch, if you eat at Virginia's, you are also supporting a truly wonderful local business. read more

It's really hard to believe that I'm the first person to review Virginia's -- according to their website they've been in the same location at Cypress and Washington Street (what's that little square called?) since 1982, and in that time have won numerous "Best of Boston"-type awards. As the first reviewer, I feel like I have to say a little more than "I had a great sandwich," but that's a good place to start. I'm always a little hesitant about ordering chicken salad, since sometimes you get stringy chicken + mayonnaise. This was nice chunks of chicken, with a little mayo (not too much) and celery and grapes, among other things. All their bread is from Clear Flour -- so that's good -- and I had a crusty French baguette (they were out of sourdough -- it was late (3pm) for lunch, after all...). The menu officially listed it as "chicken salad (of the day)," implying that the composition may change. It was good enough that I'd order whatever they came up with, sight unseen. I categorized it as a "deli," but only because I got a sandwich, and that seemed like what most of their walk-in business was. There are a couple of display cases that have all sorts of interesting prepared foods inside -- marinated veggies, falafel, spicy peanut noodles, gazpacho salad -- and while I was there people were walking in and buying them to go. It was then I realized there's a pretty active catering business going on -- the lady who served me said they had a big event they were doing that afternoon. So the food leans toward the nicer end of "deli," for sure. The space itself is small -- 3 tables, I think -- and you get the idea that most of their business is either (a) catering, (b) to go, or (c) fast eaters that don't stick around too long. They did have newspapers to read while you eat, so it's clear that they're not actively hurrying anyone out, and the staff seemed happy to chat with the customers when they aren't sprinting to get an order together. So -- first visit for me, first review for Yelp -- since I live in the neighborhood I'm sure I'll be back, and I feel like there must be a secret underground cult of people that love this place and don't write about it. read more

I love Virginia Fine Foods. There are only two places I visit in Boston when I want a really good sandwich. I am sure there are others but the best I've found are at Flour (see that review for more info) and Virginia Fine Foods. There are about 20 different sandwich options available and I have probably tried close to 10. Every single sandwich I have ever gotten has been made with the best and freshest ingredients in extremely interesting combinations. Try the chicken with the lime mayo, it's got quite a spicy kick. The chicken salad is amazing but make sure you like red onion. The breads are unbelievable and are chosen with the same delicacy as the rest of the ingredients. I could go on and describe every sandwich I've tried but just go find your favorite and thank me later. Also, be sure to grab an Anzac cookie while you are there. They are amazing! read more

Went here with a friend to grab a bite to eat for lunch on a weekend. The place is pretty small, but we were a little after the lunch rush so we were able to grab a table. We were pretty hungry so we got several different things: Chicken-salad sandwich (4 stars): This was probably my favorite part of the meal. The chicken salad was very fresh and the pairing of the chicken and onions with the bread created a nice bite. Ham, pesto, provolone panini (3.5 stars): This sandwich was also pretty good and the bread had a nice crisp to it. I thought it was a bit small, but the flavor was there. Couscous (2.5 stars): This was probably the least satisfying part of the meal. Though the texture was great, the flavor was very bland as it seemed to lack any ingredients other than cranberries. NY Spicy Dill Pickle Chips (4.5 stars): I am a big pickle fan and these were no disappointment. Chocolate "street" cookie (3 stars): We were hoping to end the meal with a bang, but instead found ourselves a bit underwhelmed by this cookie as it lacked any major chocolatey flavor. Overall, this place is very homey and the service was very friendly. Some of the items seem to be priced a bit high for what they are, but the sandwiches (with bread from Clear Flour) are all pretty decent. read more
