Penny specified not once, but twice, the wrong bamboo for my zone (6A). I'm not into over 80 plants and $3000 with Bamboo Garden. The first freeze I accepted as my fault even though I was told my containers would be fine. They died within 2 years. Now I've just paid my landscaper to install 50 plants--only come to find out they too are not rated for my zone and she should have suggested another strain. She offered me 10% off on a new order but I'd have to pay full shipping. In my world, that's bad business...doubling down on a mistake and being greedy. Not good business. read more

This place is definitely secluded, but worth a visit if you have any interest in bamboo. Definitely check out their website before you go--it's extremely informative about the bamboos they carry. Service was top-notch and we were able to chat a bit and see some mature specimens before making our selection. We took a golf cart ride to the hot house to pick out the bamboos we would be taking home. So far, they are all doing extremely well. Two plants that they shipped to me were in perfect condition. The third had most of its leaves 50% brown, and the plant was severely pot bound Probably should have been repotted a year before it was sent to me. The 90 day live guarantee for potted stock is worthless, since even a dying plant will live for 90 days. Seven months after I received the plant, is has only a few leaves, but probably will not actually die. Certainly not worth what I paid for it though, and it has lost at least one year's growing season. read more

Bamboo Paradise in North Plains Or. I am in the middle stages of building a Japanese Garden in my back yard and nothing screams Japanese Garden like Bamboo. I heard about this place and had to check it out. I'm so glad I did because this place is amazing, literally hundreds of varieties of bamboo to choose from at different stages of growth. So, you drive up to the front office area and they are there to greet you and show you their amazing Bamboo City. I am in San Diego and had been looking locally for a while for large planters in which to plant some tall bamboo plants to create a kind of privacy screen to block out my neighbors house behind me. Despite being in a large city, I could not find anything close to what I was looking for. I 'googled' bamboo planters and "high quality bamboo" and Bamboo Garden is what kept coming up. The 6' long dark wood planters were exactly what I was looking for, and the quality of the bamboo shown on their website, along with the incredible amount of information regarding all the different types of bamboo, planting instructions for planting in containers or in-ground, the custom design of their planters that have been constructed and perfected specifically for bamboo plants, and their more than reasonable prices kept me coming back to their website. I decided to make the call and see if shipping multiple large, heavy wooden planters and many tall bamboo plants to San Diego was even an option, and expected it to not be cost effective. I spoke to Peter when I called, and had many questions! Peter was extremely informative and patient, and was able to give me a quote for shipping all the items I wanted on the spot. The shipping was less expensive than I expected, so I decided to take the plunge. I ordered five 6' long planters, 15 bamboo plants and some fertilizer. I am a perfectionist and am very often disappointed in the quality of items when ordered to be shipped, and honestly I expected the planters to arrive with some kind of damage and the plants to arrive in less than stellar condition. I received my order yesterday and was astounded! The five planters, 6' x 2' x 2' in size, were packed with such care there was not so much as a scratch on any of them. They survived the 1,100 mile journey completely unscathed due to the care in which they were packed. Bamboo Garden has the shipping of these over sized planters down to a science. My next pleasant surprise were the 15 bamboo plants. Again, the plants were packed with such care that literally not one branch was broken, they were incredibly healthy and lush, and taller than I expected (yay!). Bamboo Garden takes customer service seriously, and it shows... every step of the way. I needed to wait a week or two in order to have 15 plants of the exact size and type I wanted to come in, and I received a call the same day they arrived at Bamboo Garden, and then an email the next day, as promised, with the tracking number for my order. Everyone I dealt with at Bamboo Garden was extremely knowledgeable, professional, and followed through every step of the way. When my landscape team showed up and saw the quality of the bamboo and the custom planters they were blown away also. They asked me where I got the planters as they have never seen anything that nice locally. Use the website to get directions. We used GPS which had us driving on a gravel road for 8 miles. We asked Ned if there was an easier way to get back and he smirked and said to use the paved road. Sure enough there is a paved road that easily connects to 26. We're dolts. As for the garden, it is BEAUTIFUL. So many lovely bamboo plants in such a quiet, peaceful setting. Ned drove us around in a golf cart and showed us different plants. He really knows his stuff. He helped us select the best plant for our needs. We brought photos of our backyard on digital camera and he was very honest that we couldn't fit a bamboo into some of the spaces without the roots busting out of the retaining wall. We bought a Golden Crookstem Bamboo, or Phyllostachys aureosulcata "aureocaulis', for 65 bucks. The same plant at our local nursery is over $100. True, we had to drive past Hillsoboro to get it but it was worth it for the advice that went with it. Ned was very helpful and personable. They do request you call first and let them know you are coming so that they can have staff ready to assist you. It's not a place you can just wander around because it's huge so you want somebody to help you. Seriously, use the directions on the website. We had visions of breaking down and having our dessicated bodies found by the sheriffs on a fly-by looking for sneaky MJ growers. Greatest selection of bamboo one will find around the Portland area. It is a bit of a drive but well worth it. The staff is well educated on the bamboo and will drive one around the 16 acres of bamboo fields. It is worth going out with a camera then spending a day taking pictures and walking around the farm. With terrific staff and a breathtaking setting, Bamboo Garden is the ultimate in a destination nursery. The amazing variety of bamboo species that they grow is just the start. You get a super golf cart tour from your incredibly informed guide/staff member and then you can wander through the groves to really experience the plants in a natural state. Once it came down to selecting individual specimens, our guide Adam was super patient, moving the pots in and out so we could see each one separately. He asked all the right questions about our needs and what the actual space requirements were, and then made some wonderful recommendations. We ended up purchasing 6 timber bamboo plants over 25 feet tall to form a screen. They were replacing some large trees that fell down and left our yard exposed to the uphill neighbors. We couldn't be more pleased with the result. In addition, and for a reasonable extra charge, the Bamboo Garden will arrange for delivery and installation. Nursery manager Noah recommended the proper soil for our space, then personally delivered the plants himself. He expertly guided them through our elaborately planted garden, under trees and through hedges without damaging any of the mature plantings! As others have posted, cross reference the directions on the website with your GPS. Ours got us there just fine, though there is a short section of gravel road at the end. I have had it in my mind to write this review for a long time. I have purchased quite a bit of bamboo from these folks over the years, staring out at their old place and then following them to the new, much larger farm. I currently have about 5-6 varieties growing in my back yard, all of which were purchased at the The Bamboo Garden, it's true they have the most amazing variety. However I do have a problem that has been irritating me for a while. A few years back, I decided that I was missing a good variety of Black Bamboo and I trotted off to The Bamboo Garden to buy a good sized specimen. several months after planting it, I noticed a blotchy discoloration to many of the leaves of that plant, which I discovered was a Spider Mite. I called The Bamboo Garden since at the time that one new plant was the only one infected and I assumed that it must have come from the seller. They basically told me that it must have come in with the birds and it couldn't have come from them.They were of no help at all. Having Spider Mites in your bamboo feels a lot like having Herpes. It seems nearly impossible to get rid of and although it doesn't kill you, it keeps coming back. Maybe they were right and it just happened to fly in with the birds and infect the only new plant I had purchased in several years, but it seems pretty far fetched. All in all though, I felt like they were not willing to engage with me on the subject and was disappointed in their customer service. read more

I'm thrilled with Bamboo Garden! I live in northern CA so had to order online/by phone. I called in on a Saturday and within minutes Jim called me back. He spent almost an hour helping me pick out plants that fit my conditions, price point and type of bamboo I was looking for. He was very patient, helpful, friendly and knowledgeable and for a mere $260 I got 6 1 gal plants for my large planters and another for a pot, including shipping, which comes out to about $35/plant. Unlike many people who think it's a pest, I'm addicted to it. I love the way it sounds when the wind blows through it and I never get tired of looking at it. They have an incredible selection and they are so efficient at shipping the the plants arrived in a mere two days looking like I had just picked them up at a pricey local nursery. Their prices on barrier are exceptionally reasonable, lower than anyone else online, which is how I discovered them in the first place. Over 400 kinds of bamboo this place has anything you need, you can buy plants of any size/age. About 40 minutes from downtown and the last 5-6 minutes I lost cell phone reception/gps, but right when that happened there was signage to guide you the rest of the way. It's confusing when you first get there, not your normal nursery to wander around and buy from, so be sure to stop by the office (clearly marked) and have someone take you around on a golf cart. They sure will make sure you feel great about your purchase before you buy. Then when you've spend a few hundred bucks and the bamboos they recommended for NY winters die the very first winter, well you are SOL. Supposedly what I purchased were "cold hardy" up to -10 degrees. Well the winter of 2014/2015 did not go down that low, but none the less all 5 plants I purchased from them died. I guess I should purchase from a more honest company. Even when Initially planted them, I saw not a single inch of growth, makes me wonder if these things were basically dead on arrival. read more

Extensive website. Placed a phone order of 6 pots of #5 black bamboo on 3/21. Delivered 2 days later (to Seattle) with UPS shipping. The bamboo plants are in good and healthy condition. The #5 plants range from about 6-7ft tall. They are bent around and shipped in shorted UPS boxes. The shipping packaging is excellent.
