I first tried this place yearssss ago and wasn't that impressed so I never returned. After an exhausting move-in day, I wanted something quick and close so I decided to give it another try tonight. Again, not impressed. We got the tom yum, which was the only saving grace, Thai chicken wings, roti, and drunken noodles. - The tom yum tasted the best in the whole order. I'm usually picky with my soups but I thought the flavors held up well. We asked for chicken rather than shrimp and they were able to substitute it for us, which is nice. - The Thai wings tasted like regular fried wings you'd find in a Chinese take-out joint, even though it was supposed to be marinated. I didn't taste anything other than salt. - The roti was like a scallion pancakes sans scallions. And instead of curry dipping sauce which I was really craving, it was just peanut sauce! Incredibly disappointing. I can def tell the difference. - The drunken noodles were average. It didn't have a strong basil or spicy flavor but it'll do in a bind. Overall, I probably won't come back again unless I'm super hungry and can't wait for delivery from elsewhere. They were busy tonight, considering the population of Brighton probably doubled in size this afternoon, but it's as average as I remembered it from a few years ago. read more

LOVED this place! I went with a friend for dinner on a rainy/snowy weeknight a few weeks ago. It wasn't very crowded and we were seated right away next to the big fish tank. The service was fantastic; we got our drinks and food very quickly. Awesomely huge portions, and we loved the attention to detail (decorated straw caps, Mario mushroom radishes, etc). Our server was smiley and friendly. The food was yummy! I got the thai wings (which were pretty good) and the seafood/tofu noodle soup (AMAAAAAAZING!). My friend got the tempura veggies and mango curry with tofu (both of which were delicious). Our favorite part was the little aquarium situation. There was one fish that had a crush on my friend and whenever we looked over, it was hanging around in her area staring at her. Hilarious. As we were leaving, we noticed the lone fish in the tank by the door... "flower horn fish," our server quipped. WOW, WHAT AN UGLY ANIMAL. It looked like a bag of lipo fat (sorry) to me, and a cellulitic thigh to my friend. I love Thai food and this is my new favorite Thai restaurant in the area. I love the funky fish tanks and the calm atmosphere. I ordered the radna noodles with tofu and my friend ordered the pad see ew noodles--both dishes were incredible. Reading yelp reviews pays off--I knew to run in and ask for the Whole Foods parking lot permit. The servings were generous enough that we both had leftovers. (review dated 1/08): went there once and arrived after friends ordered so i can't give it a fair review provided that i don't have a good grasp of what was ordered. whatever food that came (pad thai, curry duck w/noodle, some rice dish) was of good quality and quite typical for thai. that "4-taste fish" was nice--liked the sweet & sour sauce but not so much w/the bone-y fish (proceed slowly and carefully!). like that they provide parking at the nearby whole foods lot on washington st. but problem is that you have to park in the lot, walk to restaurant, deposit your driver license to get a parking permit, walk back to lot and leave permit in your car, then walk back to restaurant to eat. and THEN reverse the process as you leave. some think that's still better than searching for parking in the area (which is quite difficult unless you're a brighton-allston resident), but i'm wondering if there's an easier way around this... such as going elsewhere that gives you less of a pain for parking but offers equal quality of food. :) read more

I've only had the pad thai here which was OK. I came in for lunch takeout, took a look at the menu and decided pad thai it is. The order was done in seriously 2 minutes. They must have been making a batch while I was ordering. While it tasted ok, it was very heavy on the eggs. As I dug in more and more scrambled egg were there. There was a large heap of sprouts on the side. Way more then I needed. The amount of peanuts on top was perfect. The lunch special was only $6.50 and a very large portion. The lady behind the register was very friendly and the back was bustling with cooks making food. I'll have to go back here when I'm in the area again and eat some other stuff to update this review but for now I'll give it an A-Ok. read more

I have lived one block from this place for 2 years, and last night was my first time in, and it was only because YoMa is closed on Wednesdays. Boy do I wish I had come here sooner. This Thai food is all kinds of flavorful deliciousness! Thai food is so much more than overly sweet noodles or coconut curries. I ordered the drunken noodles and loved every minute of it. Bold flavors -- basil, roasted garlic, Thai special sauce -- make it a winner. Plenty of tender chicken too. The spring rolls were fresh and tasty, the tofu dice were hot and creamy, crunchy pad thai was the best I've tasted, and my brother's beef basil rice dish was amazing. This brother, who traveled all over Thailand for months, gave it two thumbs up. As he put it, "they even have a proper spice tray." His only bone of contention was the fact that they didn't serve the meals with spoons - which is apparently all anyone over in Thailand eats with. He did ask for one, and got it. I give this place ten fingers up - since two thumbs doesn't seem sufficient. read more

This is some of the worst Thai I've had in Boston, basing quality off price. I've had much better for a bit less. Although it is better than some of the places near BU. I was unimpressed with my meal the two times I've been there, and I though it was far too expensive. The atmosphere is excellent, and the service is good too though. I dunno, maybe I missed the boat on this restaurant the four times I've been there (given all of the good reviews) but my dining there continues to be mediocre, especially considering Brown Sugar is just down the street. The portions are large, so that's certainly good. But I feel as though the food is never sufficiently seasoned, the natural flavors from the veggies and proteins aren't accompanied by anything and are left to fend for themselves. Def excited that I moved right up the street from Bamboo! We ordered the chicken dumplings for an app and they were so good. I always get excited to have good chicken dumplings! We also split the Thai BBQ Chicken which was Cornish hen. I guess we should have known better but there were a lot of bones to deal with so I'm glad I wasn't on a hot date, but it was still tasty. Lots of better Thai places in Boston. There's a cool salt water tank I'm the middle of the restaurant. I order take out from here occasionally since I live so close. I have tried a few different things. Pad Thai is pretty good. The over rice dishes are kind of bland and non authentic. The Thai iced tea is way too sweet but it's pre mixed so they can't do anything about it. I ask for it with less ice and more cream and it taste good that way. I always get the drunken noodle. It's actually really good and comes with a lot of chicken. BUT the last two times I've gotten it I had a stomch ache after. So I donno read more

Excellent Thai appetizers. I went there with a group of 3 other people, and the 4 of us were able to split a bunch of their reasonably priced appetizers and 2 entrees, and end up stuffed and happy! Definitely try their specials, they are pretty good! Food was good tasting. Service was on the whole pretty good, had to ask for water a few times but other than that, nothing too fancy. Just moved into the area, and decided to try a restaurant that is within walking distance. 3 of us went to dinner, and were immediately seated and given the menus and waters. It took a bit of time for our server to come take our orders, and it wasn't too busy in there. However, the waitress was nice, respectful and came pretty quickly with our orders, including a small on the house appetizer with mango dipping sauce. Vegetarian yellow curry- absolutely delicious Crispy pad thai- not a big fan of the crunchy noodles but it was good BBQ chicken- too greasy but great flavor In general, we were quite happy with the service and the food. The check was brought over, and then we remembered that we had a groupon. We presented the coupon to the waitress and her friendliness turned 180 degrees. It seemed like she did not care anymore, and was even mad that we had the groupon. It was quite odd. Don't give out groupons if you don't like them. We tipped on the full price before the coupon, as is customary, but we are wondering if that is not the norm for those who do not know to do so, and that is why she was unhappy. Would I go back? Yes. Literally the worst - FORGOT to make my takeout order - WHAT? Seriously, they have one job. Don't go here, waste of time.

Seeing as though Bamboo is the only Thai restaurant I've acclimated myself with in the area, my review is definitely biased. That said, I've not had a bad experience here, and the myriad of good qualities it holds earn it the stars. I feel one would be hard pressed - or simply arrive on an off night - to not enjoy something about Bamboo. The food is outstanding and very fairly priced. Servings are more than adequate - every time my girlfriend and I go, she's bringing home an extra meal and I'm bursting at the seams. The Tamarind duck is unbelievable, crispy exterior with melt in your mouth interior. The Pad Thai (I've tried both crispy and vegetarian) is not only delicious but an awesome value. The Mango Curry Chicken was one of the only dishes I've enjoyed that didn't really 'do it' for me, but it was still very, very good. Service is a major plus. Not one employee of Bamboo I've ever encountered has been in negative attitude. They're fast (as others have said, almost TOO fast!), efficient, and kind. I can't make a bad comment on them at all, to be honest. Decor. What is there to say about the Decor inside Bamboo? It's a little small when it gets busy, but it's never totally uncomfortable. The first time I sat inside the restaurant I remember it coming off as somewhat tacky, but later visits actually resulted in me completely appreciating the aesthetics. The fish are a major selling point - some pretty strange looking customers in those tanks. The one upon entering can never seem to swim in a straight line, he's always kind of treading water, that poor lumpy mass. The other rather funny fish is the Puffer in the big tank, if you sit near it he has a tendency of taking interest in you while you eat. Add to the interior aesthetics the fact that the Chefs at Bamboo do some downright awesome looking stuff on your plate and your eyes will be as pleased as your stomach. Growth Mushrooms from Super Mario Bros. as a culinary decoration? You betcha! Carrots carved into roses? They've got it! It's really pretty awesome to see the stuff they'll come up with. Bamboo has been a consistently delicious dining experience for me and those I've been with. Given that and all of the aforementioned positives - and the fact that it's not even a 2 minute walk from me - the five stars weren't hard to part with. read more

How have I not reviewed Bamboo yet?! This is my favorite restaurant in all of Boston. I probably ate there twice a week and always had the same thing - pad thai no turnip. The dish is huge so you can totally make at least two meals out of it. Oh gosh. It is heaven. And the people who work there are so damn nice. During the winter I had it delivered a couple of times and they were super prompt. I have turned several friends on to it and the general consensus is that it's like crack. Bamboo is one of those places where at the end of the meal you end up thinking why don't I come here more often? A total hole in the wall, Bamboo serves consistently high quality budget conscious food. I've tried a number of dishes and never been disappointed. Closest I've come to a problem was this weekend when my chicken in the garden - stir fried chicken and veggies with a peanut sauce -- came out with the veggies under done. No problem, 3 minutes later I had a plate of perfectly cooked food. This dish has become my measuring stick for Thai places and I can absolutely say that Bamboo has set my new bar. The masraman curry is also great but a little spicier than most places. Pad Thai is enormous! Portions are generous so go hungry, particularly since it's hard not to want an appetizer too! I have only had delivery once from here. I was shocked at how fast the delivery was... I was so surprised that it was them ringing the buzzer that I was nervous to answer the door thinking it would be my neighbor complaining about the dogs being too loud when playing.... Thankfully it was my yummy dinner. I ordered Chicken Pad Se Ew. First off I am a huge fan of Pad Se Ew and am a little picky about it, it wasn't my favorite that I have had but it also wasn't the worse. Perfectly fine Thai take-out, but nothing special. I've also eaten in once; didn't make an extra special experience. I've had the pad thai (somehow manages to be tasty while being reasonably bland), the tom yum soup (maybe the best thing on the menu), the crab rangoon (generously stuffed and VERY good dumplings when added to the tom yum), and a red curry (serviceably meh). Its main advantages are that it's one of the few places within a five minute walk of my apartment, and the prices, while not the cheapest ever, are certainly reasonable considering how many meals you can get out of a $20 bag of food. tl;dr: soak your crab rangoons in the tom yum and enjoy. read more

Ambience is nice. But I'm here to complain about the pad Thai. I ordered it "medium" spicy. I love spicy foods, I eat them all the time. But this was almost inedible due to how spicy it was. The pad Thai had no flavor other than the spice, which was a waste in my opinion. I've been going to the bathroom all night and my stomach is aching still a day later. My mouth was burning to the point where it was hurting but I wanted to finish everything since I paid for it all and I'm a student. I highly recommend not to order anything spicy even if you love spicy food because it's on a whole other level, unless you're Thai and used to it. I personally learned from my mistake and will never order that again. However, the menu should state how spicy "medium" is. If I get medium spic level at a Mexican place it's tolerable and I'm fine ( sometimes medium would even just taste mild). read more

The curries did not offer a variety of veggies as promised, instead they were packed with gross cabbage filler, which one does not expect in Penang curry. Finally, my crispy chicken pad Thai had minimal flavor, and the chicken was very over cooked and fatty and tasted like fish. It was as if the chicken were fried last week with seafood then reheated for my meal. Also, I ordered through DoorDash, and the entire order arrived cold and needed to be reheated. I love the food here and am glad to have discovered this hidden gem. There are usually only a few tables filled, even when the crowd from the restaurant next door is spilling onto the sidewalk. Their krathong thong appetizer (a little pastry crust filled with chicken, peas, corn and other yummy things) is amazing and I sometimes find myself daydreaming about it. My only complaint is that when I go over the summer it is usually extremely warm in the restaurant, to the point of being uncomfortable. Their air conditioning doesn't seem to do a good enough job, but hopefully they'll take care of this situation before our next heat wave. read more

This is my go to place for Thai even if I really don't live close by. The food is super tasty, not covered in roasted garlic (I am allergic, this is a recurring issue with Thai food for me), and not pricey. I love their pad thai, love their pad see ew, and love the curry noodle soup. They also make their rice dishes with well cooked brown rice if one is trying to be healthy. However, what I order here again and again and again, is the house salad. Why? Do they use some magical lettuce? Do they cover it in bacon (awesome idea, but no!)? It is the carrot ginger dressing. I do not know what they put into this crackalicious dressing, but I cannot get enough of it. I always get extra dressing and lament a lack of lettuce and veggies. I often order TWO salads for an entree instead of any of their other yummy offerings. I really wish they bottled that dressing. read more

It seems like most of the dishes here are sweeter than other Thai restaurants, which I don't really like as much personally. Otherwise food in general is decent, it has good ambiance, good service, and great portions. True story: My friend called there to order a curry for take-out and it was at around 10pm during the weekend. Over the phone she asked how long it would take before it was ready for pick up and the other end said, "5 minutes." "5 minutes?!" (she turned and looked at me in disbelief) "Yes." After she hung up we just laughed because we had never heard of an Asian take-out being THAT fast. Isn't it always at least 15 to 30 mins? We were wondering whether we should be worried about how safe or good the food would be. In order to find out if they could deliver their promise, we showed up at the door exactly 5 mins later. And lo and behold, the food was all packaged and ready to go! And it taste good! And she didn't feel sick! I'm not sure how they did it but if the idea of take-out that's ready in 5mins doesn't bother you, then give them a call! read more

The food alone is worth 4/5 stars in my opinion, but the service *suckkkeeddd*. I'm not sure if they had their lazy staff on hand last night, but it took us wayyy too long to get our food ordered/plates cleared or any kind of attention from the waitress. I wouldn't have minded as much if we hadn't been literally one of *two* occupied tables in the entire restaurant. I get that it was a slow Monday night, but we waited at least 10 minutes between closing our menus and ordering, all while our waitress was staring blankly into space from behind the counter. "I'm so freaking hungry" I grumbled at least 4 times while trying to aggressively make eye contact with her. Once she even came out from behind the counter, made eye contact with me, and then returned to whatever conversation she was having. So I really didn't appreciate that. That said, our food was excellent and came out pretty quick! My boyfriend had the Bangkok Fried Rice, which was loaded with super crunchy, tasty chicken and a really big crispy fried egg. It was the perfect amount of spicy-sweet for a fried rice dish. I believe my boyfriend actually stated that it was the "legit", non-processed version of his favorite cheap style of fried rice. I tried the Massaman curry, which had a sauce that was a bit thicker and peanuttier than I'm used to, but it was still creamy with a hint of coconut. I appreciated the variety of vegetables that came with it--onions, peas, green beans, broccoli, and even some cabbage. Absolutely delicious! I would warn that while the prices are reasonable for the portions you get, you likely won't have leftovers (which is something I've gotten used to from my usual Thai spot). read more

Love, Love, Love this restaurant! I used to live closer and would eat in, but they luckily deliver to my new neighborhood. My favorite thing to order is the Mango Chicken Curry under specialties. The chunks of mango are so big and fresh. Also, they don't overcook the veggies. I love that the green beans are still crunchy! Lastly, I don't usually order an appetizer, but in my last order I tried the Asian Vegetable Dumplings (steamed) and they are Y_U_M_M_Y!!!! Try it! read more

The food in Bamboo is absolutely great! My favourites are the miso soup and yellow curry with seafood- delicious! Everything I tried there so far was very good - the portions are good for at least two people :)) The service is very nice and attentive. The prices are more than affordable.
