Where this food belongs. Harsh but true.
    Matthew H.

This review is more focused on the food itself as I picked it up to go. The ordering and pick up process was fine. The food was terrible. Thai curries were watery, pepper forward, and bland. No thai flavors came through just pepper, old vegetables and watery curry base. That goes for both we ordered. Just terrible. My wife ordered pad Thai, this also had water in the bottom of the to go plate. Bland and basically tasteless. I already knew this was place was a problem as they claim to do 3 countries cuisines. That typically means they will be sub par or marginal at all of them. This was def the case. Not to mention we paid 80 bucks for 3 entree's and an app which was also terrible. Worst asian food I have had to date in the TC. Do not bother coming here.

We used to go to the Maplewood location quite often when it was still open but have only been to the Oakdale location twice. Her stuff is way way overpriced! Every little thing you have to pay an extra fee for which is ridiculous. When we went the other day after all the extra fees (plus the extra fee for using a credit card) our meal cost over $90. What we got was two glasses of lemon ginger tea, 4 egg rolls (two pork and two veggie), a tuna sushi roll, a vegetable sushi roll, a sweet potato sushi roll (made with Japanese sweet potatoes), pork egg foo young with fried rice and a half order of coconut curry with tofu. The Pork and the tofu each cost us an extra 4 dollars. We also had to pay 3 extra dollars to switch from white rice to fried rice and $2 extra for two sides of spicy mayo (which wasn't even spicy). That's a total of $13 extra for things that should not be that much of an up charge. Not to mention the $2 extra for using a credit card. The food is not worth the prices they are asking for and this time they had a $8000 robot deliver our food when there was only one other person in the restaurant. No wonder they have such high prices!!! We will not be back as nothing is great except the egg rolls, the prices are outrageous and the Two times I've asked for my food spicy they ignored me and didn't put in any spice. There are a lot better Asian restaurants out there where you get more food, with good quality with way cheaper prices!

2.5/5 The flavors have changed on the stir fry end and they are not good. Mild is too spicy and the vegetables are not cooked well. The bubble "tea" is good but it's more of a smoothie and not your typical tapioca pearls. The mango spring rolls are usually good but not always fresh.

I love the food here! The pho here is so good and the service is great. The broth is very flavorful as is and doesn't need anything added at all. 10 of 10 would recommend.

Great and flavorful food but very slow service. If you're expecting a fast service, I would not recommend this place. Other than that, the food is good, slightly overpriced compared to pricing around the area.

This place is awesome and a robot delivers your food to the table! My son loved it. The food is delicious and they have Chinese and Japanese menu! Yum

Bambu signature stir fry, vegan by default ($11). Fine, nothing special.

Bambu is a pan-Asian spot in a stripmall in Oakdale. It labels all its vegetarian dishes (nearly all of which are vegan by default), but is too safe/generic in its recipes and didn't leave much of an impression. The Twin Cities is blessed with excellent Indian, Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese places; Bambu comes across as a tribute band playing the greatest hits. It's fine, but not the real thing. The vegetable spring roll ($3) is utterly bland and forgettable, consisting of rice noodles stuffed inside a rice wrapper. get the Vietnamese crispy egg roll ($5 for two) instead, which is much tastier. The khoai tay fried potatoes ($11) is part of the Vietnamese section of the menu and one of the more unusual/interesting dishes. It tasted okay on the first few bites with a cool mix of green onion and fried potatoe, but becomes a starchy mess after twenty minutes and doesn't reheat well at all. The broccoli stir fry ($13) and Bambu signature stir fry ($11) are nearly indistinguishable from each other. I'd go with the Bambu signature because it's cheaper. The chow fun ($11) was fine but nothing special. The online ordering has a glitch which doesn't allow you to modify it to pick your protein, but the restaurant clued in that we'd want tofu given all our other dishes. Lastly, I had high hopes for the green curry ($12), as it's hard to find a truly vegan/vegetarian Southeast Asian curry (99% of the time they use shrimp paste in the curry mix). At Bambu, it tasted okay, but was basically a thick coconut creme soup filled with vegetables and tofu. It didn't have the kick or lightness of a true Thai or Cambodian curry. I didn't dislike Bambu, but I didn't love it either. That said, Oakdale doesn't have a ton of other options, so I'm glad it's around.

I ordered the egg rolls, wontons, and the sesame chicken lunch combo. When we arrived, we noticed they had a lunch special available until 3 p.m. We asked if we could still order from that menu, and the woman taking our order pointed to her clock and said no. I glanced at my phone--it was 2:55 p.m. I asked her when the cut off time was and mentioned that their clock seemed a bit fast. She eventually let us order the lunch combo, but it was clear she wasn't thrilled about it. The interaction left us feeling a little awkward. As for the food--it was just okay. The wontons were bland and lacked any real flavor. The sesame chicken was underwhelming, missing that punch of sweetness and crunch I was hoping for. The side of rice tasted old and dry, like it had been sitting out for a while. The one highlight was the egg roll. It came out hot and fresh, crispy on the outside and filled with a good amount of veggies. It's definitely up there with my favorites. If I'm in the area again and my bestie is craving this spot, I'd be open to giving it another shot. Next time, I'd skip the combo and stick with the egg rolls, and maybe try her favorite dish--the lo mein. Hopefully, it'll be a better experience.

It's was nice to come back after many years, and see that they are still here in the same spot…read more I spoke to the owner, and they have been in this same spot for 23 yrs! I ordered the pho, which was simply beef and meatballs. The broth was homemade, basically the same as what a Vietnamese friend made when they had our family over. Yes, you have to adjust the broth, if you're into pho. And yes, you have to ask for the fish sauce, and the sugar is in packets. The service is impeccable. The dining room is in order, without stacks of boxes in the hallway, and clean. There's plenty of parking. The bathrooms are clean. The owners treat you with kindness, a smile, and gratitude for your business. All these things count a lot nowadays. By the way, their homemade Tiramisu is out of sight! Warning - rant and support for local business: I was sad to read all the 1 star reviews. Most of it was for the blandness of the broth, and comparisons of this place to authentic spots in Frogtown, St. Paul. A little bit of history: they were here long before Maplewood Mall food court is now filled with Asian fare; even before Pho King showed up in the food court for those who remember. Back then, Vietnam Star was the only viable Asian option in these parts. By these parts I mean around Maplewood Mall and Costco. Here's the thing, the primary clientele here are Anglos, not Asians. In fact, today for lunch I was only 1 of 2 Asians in the dining room. So my expectations are adjusted accordingly. It is not in Frogtown, even though that's technically not that far away. But when you're shopping in Maplewood, Frogtown might as well be in Wayzata. So when I'm around here, I know the food in the mall maybe more to my taste. However, sometimes I don't want to sit in a big mall full of people, watching my back, pay a lot of money for small portions, and be treated like crap on top of it. Sometimes, I just want to go to a nice place, be treated like a human being, and sit down in a booth to have a big bowl of pho. So what if I have to adjust the broth? I'm in Maplewood for crying out loud. Let's all be fair and support local businesses that are trying to make it work.

The chairs and tables were the type you'd expect at a Vietnamese restaurant; iykyk. The guy was prompt and brought our menus which was pretty slim being a double sided landscaped. More a Chinese restaurant than Viet, but it did have a section for Bun and Pho. Entree: Kung Pao Chicken It was tasty, the brown sauce was fairly generic, but in a good way. Like you'd want the consistency in a neighborhood restaurant, but you wouldn't drive out your way to get it. The chicken could use a bit more quality control since there were some grizzly pieces, but not enough to ruin the meal. The vegetables had a good crunch and were expected in a kung pao dish; carrots, onion, celery, peanuts. The portion was generous enough for leftovers or one very hungry adult male.

I ordered food online from them recently (administered thru GrubHub) and when I went to pick it up, there was a sign saying they were closed due to a sudden family emergency. I sincerely hope all is well for them. However, I didn't receive any food on a $55 order. As it was over the weekend, my wife called on Monday asking for a refund as we had given them a decent amount of money for us, but received nothing in return. The person she spoke to told us there was no manager who had access to the GrubHub account, but took our information and promised to resolve it. No answer as of today (Thursday) so I stopped in in-person. I was initially offered a cash refund. Until the person on duty spoke to the manager by phone. He told her it was a GrubHub problem and they couldn't refund money on a credit card purchase. So that was it. thanks for the money, now go away, not our problem. I reached out to GrubHub by chat and was told they couldn't find my order and therefore, wouldn't be offering a refund either. (that's a whole other story.) GrubHub later called back and said, still no refund, but the merchant was willing to offer a 10% discount on my next order. Huh?! I just gave you $55 you refused to give me back for giving me nothing! there isn't going to BE a next order from me, and likely the remainder of my family. I realize it's two entirely different groups saying it's the other one's problem. but Ha Long Bay ALWAYS had the option of doing right by their customers, regardless of who was at fault technically. But they chose not to. And when I called Ha Long Bay 45 minutes before their stated close time to give them one more chance, it went to voice mail. So, I guess I'm looking for a new place for great Pho.
