    Pad Thai
    Christine M.

Definitely not what I remembered from pre pandemic and their location in the adjacent strip mall. I was super excited when my husband said, " Do you want Chinese?" because he NEVER wants Chinese! We went back and forth as to which restaurant we wanted to order from. I hadn't been in so long and I was really craving their fresh spring roll and Pad Thai. We were so hungry I didn't even get pictures! The one posted is about 1/4 eaten Pad Thai. The food looked amazing as I anticipated my first nibble at the spring roll. I was in heaven. Then after a few bites more, my euphoria waned. The chicken in the spring roll tasted like it was on its last day before it should have been tossed in the trash. Not fresh - at all. The peanut sauce could only cover up so much. My mind fast forwards to Kitchen Nightmares with Gordon Ramsey. I can't even imagine what their pantry looks like. Nor do i want to I move on to the Pad Thai. It's cilantro, peanuts and noodles with sprout crunchiness! Then I get to the chicken. Again, tasted old...and then COLD. What the heck?! At least the cream cheese wontons scored? Sadly, I won't chance spending $60 for old chicken again. So disappointed.

    Shrimp combo plate. Yum!

Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai varieties. Pleasant sit down cafe style seating. Good AC. Nice peaceful mood muzak for dining. Nice waiter, casually dressed. Pricey meals, about $17 for a combo plate dinner. The food is delicious, fried rice and egg rolls cooked Viet style. Shrimp and veggies cooked Hunan style, also quite good. First impression: excellent food, good service, pleasant setting, a bit pricy. Good for a treat, but not every day.

I was seated immediately which was nice. They were attenative and quick to take my order, but I wasn't too impressed. The wontons were good, but oily (no pictures). The pho was really mediocre, the broth was a bit bland. I would consider going back and trying something different and perhaps update review.

    Pad thai

Amazing food! Just tried them tonight for take out and couldn't be happier!! Fresh ingredients, not greasy, just fantastic flavor. Had the pad thai, fried rice and chicken lo mein.

    Ha Long Bay Chicken Chowmein

I ordered Vietnamese pork egg rolls and chicken chowmein for take out. The egg rolls were very greasy and had a bitter grease aftertaste to them. Couldn't eat them. The chowmein consisted of big chunks of celery in a brown base, flavorless. With about 10 small pieces of thin sliced chicken on top. I tried this place about 4 months ago and was not impressed. I gave it another try. Wish I had not. $15 bucks out the window. Had I eaten in, i would of asked for compensation. Being take out and at home when I discovered the lack of quality, I could not. If I can figure out how to add a photo, I will of the chowmein.

I've only had the beef pho but it was very fresh tasting, and all around flavorful. Would have again 10/10.

I ordered the egg rolls, wontons, and the sesame chicken lunch combo. When we arrived, we noticed they had a lunch special available until 3 p.m. We asked if we could still order from that menu, and the woman taking our order pointed to her clock and said no. I glanced at my phone--it was 2:55 p.m. I asked her when the cut off time was and mentioned that their clock seemed a bit fast. She eventually let us order the lunch combo, but it was clear she wasn't thrilled about it. The interaction left us feeling a little awkward. As for the food--it was just okay. The wontons were bland and lacked any real flavor. The sesame chicken was underwhelming, missing that punch of sweetness and crunch I was hoping for. The side of rice tasted old and dry, like it had been sitting out for a while. The one highlight was the egg roll. It came out hot and fresh, crispy on the outside and filled with a good amount of veggies. It's definitely up there with my favorites. If I'm in the area again and my bestie is craving this spot, I'd be open to giving it another shot. Next time, I'd skip the combo and stick with the egg rolls, and maybe try her favorite dish--the lo mein. Hopefully, it'll be a better experience.

It's was nice to come back after many years, and see that they are still here in the same spot…read more I spoke to the owner, and they have been in this same spot for 23 yrs! I ordered the pho, which was simply beef and meatballs. The broth was homemade, basically the same as what a Vietnamese friend made when they had our family over. Yes, you have to adjust the broth, if you're into pho. And yes, you have to ask for the fish sauce, and the sugar is in packets. The service is impeccable. The dining room is in order, without stacks of boxes in the hallway, and clean. There's plenty of parking. The bathrooms are clean. The owners treat you with kindness, a smile, and gratitude for your business. All these things count a lot nowadays. By the way, their homemade Tiramisu is out of sight! Warning - rant and support for local business: I was sad to read all the 1 star reviews. Most of it was for the blandness of the broth, and comparisons of this place to authentic spots in Frogtown, St. Paul. A little bit of history: they were here long before Maplewood Mall food court is now filled with Asian fare; even before Pho King showed up in the food court for those who remember. Back then, Vietnam Star was the only viable Asian option in these parts. By these parts I mean around Maplewood Mall and Costco. Here's the thing, the primary clientele here are Anglos, not Asians. In fact, today for lunch I was only 1 of 2 Asians in the dining room. So my expectations are adjusted accordingly. It is not in Frogtown, even though that's technically not that far away. But when you're shopping in Maplewood, Frogtown might as well be in Wayzata. So when I'm around here, I know the food in the mall maybe more to my taste. However, sometimes I don't want to sit in a big mall full of people, watching my back, pay a lot of money for small portions, and be treated like crap on top of it. Sometimes, I just want to go to a nice place, be treated like a human being, and sit down in a booth to have a big bowl of pho. So what if I have to adjust the broth? I'm in Maplewood for crying out loud. Let's all be fair and support local businesses that are trying to make it work.

I recently visited Duc's Vietnamese Restaurant, and while some people may focus on the obvious…read morereasons it's popular, I'd like to highlight the truly important details. First, the location is outstanding. It's close to my house, which significantly reduces my daily mileage and increases my overall happiness. Even better, it's conveniently close to my favorite gas station, creating a perfect ecosystem where I can refuel both my vehicle and my sense of purpose in a single trip. The parking lot deserves special recognition. It was astonishingly clean. Not "pretty clean for a parking lot" clean. More like "someone is clearly taking personal pride in every square foot of asphalt" clean. There wasn't a single abandoned shopping cart, mystery stain, or windblown fast-food wrapper in sight. The building itself was easy to find, the entrance was clearly marked, and the doors performed flawlessly. That's the kind of reliability that builds trust. Inside, everything was spotless. The tables were level. The chairs appeared structurally committed to their jobs. The lighting was bright enough to see what I was doing but not so bright that I felt like I was being interrogated. Even the napkins seemed unusually motivated. Now we come to what may be the most underrated feature of Duc's: the restrooms. I make a "pit stop" every time I pick up my order, and I can confidently say these are among the finest restaurant restrooms I have encountered. They're always clean, well-maintained, and somehow manage to create a sense of calm and confidence. Many establishments view restrooms as an afterthought. Duc's treats them like a flagship product. At this point, I'm not entirely sure whether I'm picking up an order and using the restroom, or using the restroom and conveniently picking up an order while I'm there. The owner and his family are always friendly and professional. They don't chime my name upon entrance, but maybe in another 18 years. I was also impressed by several important but frequently overlooked details: the parking spaces were easy to navigate, the sidewalks were in excellent condition, and the overall atmosphere suggested that someone actually cares about the place. When it was time to leave, I exited the parking lot without a single awkward standoff with another driver. Traffic flowed smoothly, the weather cooperated, and my favorite gas station was still exactly where I left it. In summary, Duc's Vietnamese Restaurant excels at all the things only the best do: location, cleanliness, parking-lot excellence, dependable doors, quality sidewalks, and proximity to gasoline. I can confidently say that every aspect of the experience was absolutely fantastic. Oh, and the garlic chicken will blow your hair back.

Get the sauce on the side so it doesn't get soggy travelling. I do this everywhere. Note that expression. We shared vegetarian egg rolls, again loaded especially fine carrots. Not loaded with filler, something in every bite and crispy as hell. A nice surprise. I got to chatting with Katan, a very cool guy. Very attentive to your order and HE actually checks through the bag so you don't have to. Customer service plus.

Well thinking I would go to Pho Hua instead, I pulled intonthe Shuang Hur Grocer's parking lot thinking I'd grab a few things before heading north on Eat Street. Then I saw signs on the Shuang Hur building for a (new to me) Vietnamese joint in the same building. Boy was I pleasantly surprised! My Huong is an 8-top hole in the wall across the parking lot from the rear of El Nuevo Mariachi Restaurant. The place is homely, small, but brightly lit and plenty of day light through the picture windows overlooking Eat Street. It's a big contrast to Pho 79 type places that are dim and short on ambience. The clientele shows. Instead of just a bunch of Asians throwing down Pho, it's a mix like you'd see at Quang or Eat Street Crossing. I was seated right away, was greeted by a cheery Vietnamese lady, and ordered Hu Tieu Bo Khu (Beef Stew Noodle Soup.) It was a dish I haven't seen before even though I have been to so many Vietnamese places (see my other reviews and lists.) The dish came very quickly, and I was shocked that they didn't bring it with a veggie plate. Oh well. Well the best way I could describe Hu Tieu Bo Khu, its basically a pot roast over noodles. So the beefy broth like a less spicey version of Bun Bo Hue, with flavors of lemongrass and star anise, nicely garnished already with what would have been on a veggie plate. The broth was delicious, slightly sweet with the carrots, and the beef was fall apart amazingly stewed with deep flavor. There were other menu items like Curry Chicken pho and a Stewed chicken rice dish I'd have to return and try!
