Almost eveything that we ordered did not disappoint. I absolutely loved the Roti (I always do). The chicken skewers were so tasty, the satay peanut sauce helped to bring out the flavor. I think they changed their veggie spring roll recipe as that was one thing that I didn't enjoy. They added curry powder to it, which is something that I have never noticed before. I am not sure if it's new or if they just added more to the batch. The eggplant with basil and the stir fried green beans are also another some of my favorites. That is the standard by which to measure all Sing/Malay places. It is crispy and the sauce is good, light and airy, with a tinge of sweetness to the roti. The dishes: - Eggplant- I LOVE the way they stir fry the eggplant. It's perfect. - sambal green beans with shrimp - great flavour. That sauce. - today's special is the Volcano Laksa. It's a portion for two people and has two lobster tails and tons of mussels and clams. As well as the usual fish cake, egg and tofu too. It's not really spicier than the normal laksa, despite the name. My whole family loved it. - beef rendang - wonderful sauce as usual. I had one of my best meals in Vancouver at Banana Leaf on Robson. We went there really tired after a long day of hiking and sightseeing and were just looking forward to quickly finishing dinner so we could go back to our hotel and sleep. But, it turned out to be a really nice and long meal where we savored each bite. We had ordered the caramelized ginger wild sablefish and the steamed cumin coconut mussels, instead of the usual Nasi Lemak and Nasi Goreng I most always end up ordering when I visit a Malaysian restaurant. I was blown away by how good the sablefish or black cod dish was. The fish itself was so fresh and almost buttery in texture and the preparation was top notch with a perfectly caramelized crispy exterior and a subtle ginger based sauce. I am drooling as I write the review, and can't wait to go back to Vancouver and taste this sablefish again - that's how much I loved it. My husband and I shared the sablefish dish and we wished we had just ordered two plates of the same thing. However, the mussels, which took some time to come out, didn't disappoint either. The cumin coconut broth was delightful but not too rich. I wished I had more bread to scoop it up, but it tasted great by itself as well. All throughout the meal, service was extremely warm and polite. I actually overheard guests at the adjacent table thanking their server and mentioning how they were visiting a number of countries and haven't encountered such great service anywhere else. read more

Solid Malaysian food after riding bikes in Stanley Park, the girl at the bike rental place recommended it. We got the roti appetizer, laksa, nasi goreng. The curry dipping sauce was reddish instead of the yellow curry that I usually see. The roti could've been cooked a little longer but still pretty good. The flavors of the laksa and nasi goreng were on point. The nasi goreng was still hot in the pyramid shape even though I ate it last. They have fancy drinks like homemade ginger beer and mocktails. We ordered: Roti Canai $7, kung pao chicken $26, ginger beef and broccoli $26, pineapple seafood chicken fried rice $25, Pandan coconut panna cotta $4, and peach Bellini. My personal favorites: The Roti Canai and the Pineapple Seafood Chicken Fried Rice served in a pineapple! The Kung pao chicken was good but had a spice that made it taste different from the other kung pao chickens I've had. Service was fast and the main course came out 5 minutes after the roti canai. Service.....great. Food.....great. Atmosphere....great. Loved their lamb skewer sharable for lunch. It was tender, juicy and tasted deliciously bbq'd. Their Chicken Curry was also amazing.....tender juicy chicken with creamy curry, okra, eggplant, green beans and yellow peppers. The Roti Canai was exciting. I say exciting because I love my bread, and this was light, fluffy, freshly baked and it came with a side curry to dip it in, and the combined tastes blew the roof off. The soup is the perfect damp weather equivalent to mom's chicken soup, but with just the right amount of warming kick. The eggplant fries were properly crisp. I rarely eat Malaysian food. Since I was visiting Vancouver, decided to check out this restaurant. Came here for lunch with my sisters. Tables were separated with plexiglass. Since it was lunch time, we ordered from their lunch menu. They have pretty good selections. Rice, noodles, salad, soup, etc. we ordered a few dishes to share. Green papaya mango: refreshing, a bit bland for my liking. Mee Goreng: very flavorful noodles. Noodles were a bit too soft. There was a bit of a weird taste that I didn't like. Roti Canai: light, fluffy and crispy. Yum. Hainanese Boneless Chicken: really good dish! Chicken was tender and moist. Rice was perfectly seasoned. Tom Yum Soup: more sour than spicy. Hmm, looks like the chef changed coz the food didn't seem as good as I last tried it. The Hainan rice was... not what is used to be. It has turmeric in it now (why?), no ginger nor any garlic flavour. I remember when I had it before it was oozing with flavour. Now it's just a bowl of mushy rice. Turmeric spinach - it was missing the cumin punch that I remember last. Other than the flavour was good and light. Ayam tofu and vegetables was hearty and the tofu were nice and flavourful. Star dish of the night. Roti canai was average. I wish the roti was lighter and fluffier. Service is always top notch and attentive. It was relatively busy at 7 pm. We had lunch at Banana Leaf on Saturday, and it was my favorite meal of the weekend. This was my first time eating Malaysian food, and I loved it! My friend and I each got a 4-course tasting meal, and we shared each other's dishes, so I got to try lots of different dishes. My favorites were the spring roll lettuce wraps, sambal green beans with shrimp, and the coconut panna cotta. Our servers were friendly and gracious, and the restaurant has a lovely atmosphere. Great food, horrible service. I had to ask for everything. There was food bits and filth all over our table and they wouldn't clean it or refill our waters or drinks. An short Appetizers & Drinks Review: My wife and I dropped in for a drink and a few appetizers to hold off the hunger until dinner on our way back into the downtown area from Stanley Park. I'm not sure which location we are actually visiting. But, the framework of the exterior was painted black. I had a "Malaysian iced milk tea / teh tarik (with condensed milk)" and my wife had a "Blue Hawaiian" (rum, pineapple juice, blue curacao, coconut cream). Both were pretty standard. We moved on and ordered fried calami with sauce and what I think was called "tufu goreng". It was good. The young man was a good waiter. Quick to serve, quicker to smile. The drinks and food came out quickly. We were refreshed with the outdoor, "front porch" table to two seating and the drinks. The appetizers held us until dinner. For what we did. I don't get these reviews at all. I've eaten at thousands of places. Been to Malaysia. Had a friend who was Malaysian and had his moms cooking. And this is authentic and very good! Somebody talked portions? I was stuffed and I can eat. Tons of food and value. Service was some of the best I've gotten in all of Vancouver. I'll be back. Robson is a long street with what seems like hundreds of eateries, and they all start blending together. Banana Leaf stood out as the only Malaysian restaurant we came across, it's not easy to find Malay food where I live so we decided to try it out. On a Friday night, we were seated quickly. The interior has clear partitions between tables, and service was very attentive while being observant. We never had to wait long for anything. The food was excellent! I got the sambal prawn with vegetables in mild, I can't eat very spicy food and sambal is in essence fermented chili paste. It was so fresh and flavorful without being overwhelming. My companion had the Singapore laksa, it was also very tasty. The portions are just right, not too big and not too small. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone interested in trying out Malaysian food. read more

We started off with roti canai... Can never go wrong with that. Freshly pan fried, flaky and slightly sweet. Always so good! We then ordering their nasi goreng. Very tasty and just the way you want it. We also their mee goreng. Both were off their lunch special menu and it was a great choice for us to have. Great service, delicious flavours, generous portions. My husband and I chanced upon Banana Leaf yesterday during a layover at YVR. We cane into the city to escape the boredom of the airport and scored big on dinner. I hadn't had Malaysian food in about 15 years, since my masters in London, uk. I have desperately grasped at other Asian dishes for the smoky goodness of Malaysian noodles. I was not disappointed to discover the Ipoh char hoh fun to be the exact fish I was seeking. It was delicious! And cured me of my quest. We had the fried eggplant starter and that, too was a find. Crisp , non slimy pieces of eggplant coated in a tempura like batter and fried was the perfect light alternative to French fries. My husband had the tofu curry and couldn't stop ooohing and ahhing. To top it all off, it was a perfect sunny day and we sat and enjoyed ourselves on the patio! Summer in Vancouver ftw! read more

During my years living in downtown Vancouver, I'd often get my fix of Malaysian food at one of the BL locations...whichever was closest, or at the other "Malaysian" restaurant, which during my recent visit, I noticed is now closed down. Then, upon yelp'ing for BL's location, I noticed this "new" location on Robson....thought I'd go check it out. We came a little before 6pm and noticed that the place was already pretty busy. We were greeted by one of the servers who told us it was going to be a 5-10 minute wait.....oh cool!.....at least it wasn't an hour wait! Shortly after, we were seated, handed the menu, and our server came by to welcome us and take our drink orders.....very nice and friendly young lady. So, my father enjoys good Malaysian food, but is often not too happy with what you get overseas, when comparing it to the real thing back in Malaysia. However, he and I were, overall, quite happy with the food here. We ordered the more typical Malaysian dishes, just because we had a craving for them, and for us to test out the quality of these common dishes. We went ahead and ordered the Roti Canai (flat bread), Chicken Satay, Gado Gado (salad), Boneless Curry Chicken, Singapore Laksa (curry vermicelli noodles), and the Pisang Goreng (fried banana fritters) with Vanilla Ice Cream. First off, the roti canai was probably the best I have ever eaten in the US/Canada, and is the closest to the authentic roti canai you get back in Malaysia.....thick, puffy, and tastes yummy. The boiled veggies in the gado gado should have been drained better as the water diluted the peanut sauce and diminished the taste quite a bit. The chicken satay was very nice and tender, but had very weak flavor.....a bit bland....the peanut sauce that came with it helped somewhat, but the satay itself typically has much more flavor on its own. The Singapore laksa was good.....yummy. But, it was the pisang goreng, that's my father's favorite dessert....which he will often eat on a daily basis from any good Thai or Malaysian restaurant that carries it.....that he commented was "very good." Yea, some hits and some misses with this place, but overall, we were quite happy with the quality of the food. Service was fine for us despite how crowded and busy the place was. Will definitely come back here again when I'm back in town. read more

I was at Banana Leaf for my first time. I was greeted by nice very staff and waited for a table on the patio. We asked for the Roti Canai entree that is a slightly sweet pastry that comes with a sauce. It was very good. For the main course, we decided for the pineapple seafood rice. We were anxiously waiting for it since we saw other tables ordering. But... tasted like plain rice. Too bad. I'll give them another chance, since the roti canai was really good and the service also, but the rice... not again. Three stars for the kind and courteous service and appetizer.
