A rusted, faded sign marks the restaurant on Governors Drive. I find it by its bright teal, yellow and purple roofed building. It's a typical hot and humid Alabama day, but for some reason everyone '"eating in" is outside. There are several people out here but only one has gotten their food. Cars are pulling in and out, most people are doing carry-out tonight, much different than the lunch crowd - tables are at a premium then. They have upgraded a little inside - the garbage bags acting as ceiling tiles have been replaced with real tiles and the buckets to catch the drips are gone. I was bummin' - it's been awhile since I've been and margaritas are off the menu. Hopefully, someday soon, they will once again be on the "good" list and be able to serve those cold cups of awesomeness. Now for the food.YUM! My absolute fave is the rellano. Perfection in my mind. Their refried beans rock and the tamales aren't bad either. The enchiladas are not my fave. My husband is partial to the fish tacos - way too healthy - nobody goes to Bandito Burrito for health food. Bandito's prices are pretty reasonable considering the amount of food that you get. I usually don't wait too long for my food, today is another story. I know what to order every time but if I didn't they are kind & helpful to suggest items on the menu. The atmosphere is good with notices of local bands and events posted up near the drink fountain, they decorate the interior and have pictures of the current and past employees and regulars. You can get beer if you drink it. And the selection is great for food items or dinners. If you are vegetarian or on a diet you can avoid unhealthy options and still have an enjoyable meal! I've fasted and been on diets that I still found a filling entrée to enjoy. Don't be surprised if you see a friend eating inside or out on the patio a lot of people like Bandito and stop in often. We stopped by at opening time to get green bean burritos and chicken super nachos. It's been a while since we stopped by and hubs was craving Bandito Burrito. We were the only customers at opening and it gave us a chance to catch up with some of the employees. Our to go order was quickly prepared and we left to head home for lunch. The chicken super nachos were excellent. The chicken pieces were plentiful and the meat was not salty. The green bean burritos were excellent! They always hit the spot. Pretty sure I've been here a couple times when I was younger, but this visit on Thursday was my first since starting Yelping, so I'll drop a review now. Bandito is a Huntsville institution, held up by many as the finest option for a cheap meal, certainly a winner for Tex-Mex or Mexican-ish fast casual. The small parking lot is almost always full to bursting. It's very, very popular. For my part...I don't know that I really get it. It's fine. The aforementioned parking lot is super difficult to navigate and isn't in the best condition, either. The restaurant itself is definitely a dive, which may or may not charm you. Seating is pretty limited and it fills up fast. You order at the counter and food is brought out to you. The menu has lots of burrito options, as well as other items like tacos, tamales, enchiladas, etc. Burritos can come a la carte or with rice or beans. Chips and salsa or cheese dip are separate and additional cost. I had an alright time at my most recent visit. The service was definitely a highlight - middle aged gentleman running the cash register, super warm and polite and took time out of his day to ask how I was doing, etc. I ordered the "no carne" burrito to go, which comes with rice, beans, lettuce, cheese, and salsa. I added on the small size portion of chips and cheese. When I got my food home, there were three small cups of salsa in my bag. Not sure if that was for the burrito or for the chips, but I was glad to have them. For me, the food is just okay - a hefty meal for a fair price, but not a crazy delicious smorgasbord. I found the burrito to be a little bland, honestly, and the lettuce was a detractor overall. The chips were kinda greasy and the cheese dip was basically tasteless, though it did have a nice consistency. The highlight was the salsa, which had a nice kick and good flavor. Personally, I don't feel much of a need to make frequent re-visits to Bandito, but it's worth a shot to see if it's more to your tastes than mine. read more

3-4 stars. We've passed this place so many times and finally tried it with out-of-town guests. The workers we encountered were very nice and friendly. You order at the counter then sit. Food is brought out to you. Everyone in our group ordered something different, and we all enjoyed our food. If you get a meal, it comes with chips and salsa or hot sauce. We preferred the hot sauce option. The salsa was only okay. Their house margs were ehh. They only offer on the rocks, no frozen option. All of our entrees were delicious. I got the green bean burrito and the beef tostado. I really liked both! Both came with a small thing of hot sauce on the side. While eating the tostada, I realized there was a hair in it. I stopped eating it at that point but didn't want to point it out in front of our group and freak everyone else out. My husband then asked if he could have my remaining bites, so I secretly showed him the hair. He then let me know that his dish also had a hair in it. Jeez!! It is off-putting to find hair in food, and it is even crazier that it happened to 2/4 of us. Eek ewww. The food tasted so good though, so we may consider trying them again. I got the special (smoked chicken burrito), hubby got the steak burrito. I feel like I'm back in San Diego when I walk in the door. The food is pretty good and the prices are very reasonable.

Both the smoked chicken burrito and the shredded beef tacos were amazing. The service was great and it has a cool and comfortable vibe.

I've lived in the area for almost 16 years and this is the first time I have eatten here. Truth be told it was OK, not good or great just OK. Bottom line the place is a few steps above a Taco Bell or their ilk, but not quite at the level of a Mexican Restaurant. Without a doubt it is affordable and fast food like with some quirky vibes... Staff member I dealt with could use some training in dealing with customers in a friendly and personable manner, might have earned her a tip. What a local divey Mexican joint? Then Bandito Burrito is your place. Huntsvillians know that Bandito Burrito is the place to go for a fast Mexican meal. Bandito Burrito is located in an older part of town in an old building that has a long history. Bandito Burrito has a strong following from the younger crowd. The restaurant is small and the lines are often long, but the line moves very fast. And the food is served even faster! Once inside, if the line is short, you line up to the right to place your order. Things are crowded and you will need to allow other customers wanting to cut through to get to the self-serve drink station that is located on the right side. But everybody is friendly. As you stand in line you face the large menu blackboard where you start to decide what you will order. Their menu is very extensive and they have daily specials too. I ordered the #2 dinner with enchilada, tamale, beans and rice. Before I could sit down they brought out my plate; it was like they knew what I wanted. Choosing where to sit can be a challenge. The small restaurant only has 3 booths and 6 tables. On a busy day at lunch finding a place to squat by your self can be challenging. I chose a table with five chairs and expected company from other customers. Making new friends can be fun right? The restaurant is not the cleanest place you will eat. You need to know going in that this is a local divey place and cleanliness is not high on the daily to-do list. The floors were very dirty and the walls and windows could use some love. But hey this is a divvy place with good food, so you cut them some slack. I looked for, but did not see, a Board of Health inspection score. I did notice the green chile pepper lights hanging from the black painted ceiling. When I looked at my plate I was surprised at size of the plate...I wasn't expected a full size meal for $8.79. So far so good. Then I looked closer and the tamale looked funny. I have never seen a tamale look like a chile relleno...then I realized it was a chile relleno and not a tamale. The enchilada was full of beef and was very good. The rice and beans were legit and very very good. Unfortunately I don't like chile rellenos so I was bummed about not getting a tamale and I already started eating my meal and didn't feel right to raise the issue. The chips and salsa were good too. My ticket was $11.49. I would have given 4 stars, but I dropped my score to 3 stars because of the tamale/chile relleno mix-up. read more

Great Mexican food. Food comes quickly even when they are busy! I like the steak burrito and cheese dip.

Quick Take: Location was easy to find. Had a lot of potential. Food was sub par. Overall: This could have been my fault but when I was talking to a lot of people, they gave this place such good marks that I had to try it. So I had high expectations for this place. I figured this was some good "eatin". I ended up ordering a burrito. It was a BEEF one. This burrito was literally...meat...cheese...wrapped in a Tortilla. That was it. I asked about the Rice and Beans combo if I could sub for Chips and Salsa and she told me no they could not do that. It seems that this kind of substitution would be welcome. The burrito was no bigger than a regular taco and was very, very plain. I felt I could have gone to a chain taco place and had just the same. This was not worth the hype. Will I go back: Possibly ONE time to update my review. Try something completely different. It could have been my fault on what I picked but when I first try a new Mex joint, I usually get a burrito and use that as my guide for how the rest will be. read more

There was cat food all over the sidewalk, later found out that was for "cheese it" OMG they feed the strays too...+5pts. So we walk in, complete shit show. I love every second of it. Holy crap-bean and cheese with salsa Verde and CRACK. I don't know what kind of magical substance they laced these with I'm ADDICTED. we even bought 2 more for the road. They were good cold 6 hours later. I need to bring a cooler and order as many as my freezer will hold. I'm feenin.... Totally makes my top 10 list for sure. Had been here twice before, but couldn't remember my thoughts on it. Just an old school Tex-Mex joint, that's stayed the course but added beer. And I'm all about it. Got the green chili pork and it was great, but for the price, the green bean was so much better. Should have just grabbed a handful of those, skipped the chips and hot salsa (also really good), and enjoyed my foamy (??) Margarita. Next time, stick with the beer and green beans. read more
