I went in with my cat for a first visit and all he needed was a check and his first round of shots. Was the first drop off at 7:30 in the morning. I didn't get him back til 2:30 in the afternoon. He hadn't gone to the bathroom the whole time there, and promptly peed himself upon getting into the car. It's a 30-1 hour proceedure if I'm being generous, and because they took so poor care of him during his visit he is now in bathroom jail as I wait for him to clean himself and rid himself of the stink and try to not have it overtake the whole house. Not very accomodating. I am trying to order a Rx Pet food. Why a cat would need a prescription for food is another ridiculous question but I had a cat that recently expired who was on an RX food. For convenience my other cat ate the same food for years now and has been doing fine. I am trying to get and rx for the food I need and they said I need an appointment. This cat has been in to see them already (recently). All they want is the $$ for the visit. They really don't care that I am almost out of food. This is thanksgiving weekend and I need food while I am away. I am definitely switching vets. Keep in mind I called last week and last night and never received a call back. Dr. Faulk and Dr. Hamberg are excellent and always take great care of my senior dogs. Front desk staff are friendly and knowledgeable. The vet techs are top notch and experienced. The practice is under new management and Jacob is doing an excellent job. It's hard to find a vet right now and many places aren't taking new clients. Be aware they are not an emergency vet but will try to accommodate you during an emergency if they are capable. I'm a dog trainer and have had dogs in my life for over 40 years. While I believe my dog does receive comprehensive care here, their check in and out process is garbage. They always seem understaffed, it took me 40 minutes just to check in recently because you need to fill out paperwork and then wait again to answer the exact same questions you answered on the form verbally. The yearly plan includes "unlimited office visits" but whenever she has had a problem they are booked out for weeks and I end up paying another vet to check her out. Not recommended. read more

Great visit Sunday for my 2 cats. This is my 7th Banfield since 2009 and I found them to be very professional and great with my fur boys! I really appreciate the nurse coming out front to take their history and check them in. Dr. Hamberg is terrific, took time to explain his findings Sunday and called me himself the next morning to give me results that were sent out overnight. Banfield is a terrible organization and I would caution against using them. If you go with a wellness plan, you become locked into a contract with very unfavorable terms. It auto renews each year and you cannot cancel without paying off in full. To make it even worse, they raise the rates each year without sending any warning to give you the opportunity to cancel. We DO NOT recommend the Banfield in Salem, MA. We've been with Banfield since July 2018 for our cat back when we lived in MO and had good experiences. We moved to Princeton, NJ in 2022 and had good experiences at the Banfield there. We recently moved to MA in Jan 2024 and went to our first appointment at the Banfield in Salem, MA. It was the WORST experience and because of this experience we've decided to cancel our wellness plan with Banfield and find another vet. Back in July 2018, we found our cat when he was a couple months old abandoned on the side of the road. We took him to a Banfield near our home in MO and immediately joined their wellness plan. Our cat was perfectly calm and compliant during exams because we were always in the exam room with him. But when covid hit, due to covid restrictions, we had to drop him off, and this is when it was discovered that he had separation anxiety when we weren't with him and he would not allow the staff to touch him so we had to give him drugs before dropping him off, which we did. Once the covid restrictions were lifted, we went back to being allowed in the exam room with him, and he was absolutely fine during exams and without the need for administering any drugs. When we called to make the appointment at Salem, we explained the situation and that we would need to be in the exam room with him during the exam. When we arrived and were placed in the exam room, number one, the vet assistant kept referred to our cat as a female, when it clearly states in his file that he is a male, and then she asked if we had given our cat drugs before the exam. AGAIN we explained it was not necessary since we were going to be in the room with him. Apparently there were old notes on file specifying that he needed to be drugged. This had never been an issue for the many past visits before this one but now suddenly for the Salem staff it was an issue, and they refused to give our cat his exam unless they took him into another room without us. The vet assistant even commented that there wasn't even a scale in the exam room we were in, so it was clear they had no intention of giving him an exam in that room. So they had our cat wait in his carrier separated from us for 45 minutes! Then the vet came in to tell us that our cat was so frightened and anxious and would not allow them to touch him or take him out of the carrier and we'd have to give him drugs and bring him back. We told her that THEY had been the ones to traumatize our cat and that he would not have acted that way if they had not separated us. The vet refused to take accountability for traumatizing our cat, and continued talking to us about what drugs we needed to give our cat. We told the vet to bring our cat back to us immediately, which she did, and we left. We will not be going back to the Salem Banfield or giving the Salem PetSmart our business, and at this point we are canceling our wellness plan and finding a new vet. read more

Very disappointed! My poor puppy's first time being sick and I trusted you guys to help make him better. Especially being his eyes! You called it pink eye and sent us on our way with some drops. My friend strongly recommended he see a real vet and sure enough! Not pink eye but Entropion where his eyelashes grow inwards and requires surgery! Banfield was good till my dog got very sick. I couldn't get an appt for a week so I spent $500. going to Woburn Hospital that night. Even after that, I still couldn't get an app for a follow up for a week. Be forewarned, the wellness plan is just that. As the cust svc spec explained to me, it is preventative and that is first priority over sick dogs for apps. I was always under the impression that a veterinary hospital would prioritize sick animals but not at banfield. Also, before signing up for the wellness plan, be aware that you can't get out of it under ANY circumstances even death of your animal. I called a wonderful practice in Marblehead and even though my dog was not a patient of theirs, they saw me that day. Unfortunately, even the outstanding care my dog received for a few months, I did have to put Layla to sleep. I'm not blaming Banfield for that because Layla was terminal but not the kind of vet I would ever go to again. read more

I finally got someone to refill his prescription for me and they wrote a prescription for the wrong medication! Excellent, excellent! At first I was skeptical to take my puppy to a vet's office associated with PetSmart; I mean they are attached to the store for crying out loud! I took him to the Salem Banfield on a recommendation from a family member who had taken her pet cats there before. The doctor's are great - they are knowledgeable, friendly, and appeared to genuinely care about my dog. She even accepted kisses on her face from my dog even after I told her that he was car sick on the trip to the vet's office! (C'mon, that's gotta count for something!) The desk staff are also great - also knowledgeable and extremely friendly and accommodating. I am proud to say that the Salem Banfield location will continue to care for my dog for the rest of his life - they are that good! Updated May, 2015: While I have moved and the Salem location is no longer the most convenient, I still take my dog to a closer, more convenient, Banfield location. I wanted to write an update that we were able to have our follow-up visit for free due to the misinformation the first vet gave us about the flea medication. Dr. Watson was much more informative, willing to listen and didn't try to push Banfield products or additional treatments that would be unnecessary. I will return if I can choose Dr. Watson for all future appointments. That's the difficulty with Banfield... not all their services and vets are equal. We also learned at our last visit. That while Banfield claims it is a Pet Hospital with emergency care, it refused to see or treat a dog that a woman brought in as it had just been hit by car. We suggested going down the street to another vet with a more personal approach and she did. We will not consider Banfield for emergency services either. read more

Took our beagle here for his annual and wanted to sign up for their Wellness plan. We signed up for the plan at the visit that day (only required to pay the startup fee, $50) and he received ALL of his vaccinations, testing and all other benefits of the plan. Our little guy came up positive on a test for a major, life threatening issue at the visit. Dr. Burdick was very informative and understanding with all of our questions. We were given the beginning of the treatment then and there, and made the appointment for the next treatment. He had to stay the day for the next treatment, and when we came to pick him up it was obvious that they took great care of him, even decorating his bag of prescriptions with his name and hearts :) A nurse called the next morning to check in on him and make sure all was well. Their wellness plan is a great fit for us, and everyone there has been wonderful since day 1. read more

I have a 145 lb English Mastiff with massive anxiety. Before making my first appointment I spent 45 min explaining this. I was told we can treat your dog no problem. I told them he needed to either be with me or medicated to be seen without me. 1st visit he was muzzled an there for 2 hours no treatment could be done because he was freaking out. They said because of COVID I could not be with Ollie during treatment an they could not treat him with out being medicated. I made a 2nd appointment an got meds to calm him for his next appointment. I also signed up an paid for their insurance. 2nd visit he was muzzled again an medicated but still not treated. The meds did not work. A 3rd visit was made with " drugs that would put down a horse" given. The meds made him aggressive an I could not muzzle him. No treatment could be given. A 4th visit was made for 5:30 pm but then I was called an told to be there at 2 pm because they wanted to sedate him an he would need to be monitored. So I muzzled him again an brought him in. Each time he is frantic an scared. After 35 min we are brought back an he is given an injection. Why didn't you just give his vaccinations! Why 4 horrible visits! When he only needed two vaccinations that you told me I could be with him for!Then after he is sedated I am told come back in about 2 hours they will call me. They call 10 min after leaving tell me to come back. Don't tell me why. Call again an tell me he is jumping at people? He is muzzled an sedated?? An you are a vet! Then the vet over the phone calls me an starts talking down to me. I was done. Told them to bring my dog. Some lady comes out, no mask, with my dog. Wouldn't give him too me finally does an says " you need to pay your bill." For what???? All you did was drug an put my dog through hell!!! I am reporting this place! I paid for a full Vet visit, bloodwork and medication 3 weeks ago for my cat to the tune on $300.She's on thyroid meds and needed her meds adjusted. She needed a follow up blood test(that's all) to make sure her meds were at the right level. That's it, $50 for the test but they also charged me another $50 for a follow up visit which was not needed! Then add on another $60 for more meds! I say I was overcharged! Rip off! Btw, the staff at the desk are incompetent both on the phone and in person. I waited 15 minutes one day while the girl took it upon herself to cut my pills in half....I had various chopped up pieces of pills. Smh. Need to find another Vet! read more

I have used them for years. 3 years ago got a new lab and signed up for wellness plan. My dog had ear infection a few months back. ( before cover19) Called them and the best they could do was 3 weeks they are always short vets, they say. They have a different vet and employees every time u go there. Now my dog has a infections on his paw and another ear infection they can't see us for 6 weeks end of oct. they girl hung up on us 3 times. Was told too bad we are short vets. Can only use there clinic so if I want to see a vet I can travel 3 towns over and hope they have something open. I am locked into a contract. They say they are open 7 days a week 24 hr a day. This is a lie ! Or I can pay out of pocket and go else where. I pay over $549. A year plus cost of medicine. But can't get anyone to even see the dog. Bad place take your animals else where. They won't break our contract it's around 50 a month. For a physical once a year, really ! But we can't receive any services they claim they provide. Receptions refused to give me Corporate phone number. Had to call back5 times to get it and they where very polite but too bad can't cancel and can't get a vet. Very rude got hung up on three times. Totally going to a new vet They really suck. Have to leave dog sick till end of oct. then they will treat him. Not !!!! Rude and they have no compassion for the animals what so ever. read more

We brought our new puppy in for his initial shots and had to set an appointment a few weeks in advance. The wait was worth it as we were very satisfied and felt welcome the whole time. Our boy had never been to the vet before and the vet tech showered him with cookies to help him relax. They had to take our boy out back to give him his shots away from us, so it was very hard hearing him yelp. Dr. Watson was beyond helpful and did not rush all of the questions we had. The exam room was clean and the staff were (luckily) not upset when our dog started trying to chew on a bench in the room. We are scheduled to be back for more shots and feel relieved that we have nothing to worry about. When we come into Petsmart for training/supplies, the vet techs always check to see how he is doing, which makes us feel like they truly care! read more

Banfield has gone down hill, don't take your pets here. When we first started coming here 5 years ago it was great. Dr Watson is a great veterinarian, but has left Banfield. They say unlimited office visits, but they are always overbooked so if your pet gets sick when you call them they immediately tell you to take them to the hospital. There Danvers location is currently closed because they have no doctors, last time my dog was sick I called multiple Banfields in the area and no one could see him, Woburn actually told me that there Doctor left early because she had a birthday party to go to. Place is a joke now, even for the comprehensive exams they want you to drop of your pet in the early morning, so they can just crate them and get to them whenever they have time. read more

We have brought our 2 dogs here from the time we first got them. We paid a start up fee and about 26 per month per dog for puppies (I believe its less after the first year). The price evens out with most vets as you dont have to pay for the visits and you end them bringing them a lot more often than you would to a regular vet, so you know they are being taken care of. Plus for spaying & neutering all you pay is the cost of medicine. Most of the care and shots are included in the cost except for required medications. The staff is always friendly and so are the vets, they love playing with the dogs and seem to like what they do. They have convenient hours as well, they are open earlier than the actual petsmart store which was convenient when we dropped off the dogs to get neutered before work and picked them up after work. They did great work. Both of our dogs were a little woozy when they came home after being fixed, but they healed very well with no infections or issues. They were both right back to normal by the next day and didn't need a cone or anything. Overall I have to say we have been happy with the care & the staff and would definitely recommend this particular location to anyone. read more

I don't know if it's all Banfield hospitals or this one specifically but I signed up for the wellness plan because my dog needs a teeth cleaning and that would cover the cost while including other services. Ok so I booked my first appointment as a "evaluation" to see where he was at with his health and what would be good for him. Get charged an office visit even though I had already paid for the wellness plan which includes office visits. Ok that's fine whatever, I just need to book an appointment for his teeth, I know it's pricey having a pet. Book a teeth cleaning appointment for January. January comes and I get a call the day before his appointment that they have to "move it" aka cancel because of whatever problem they have on their end. Probably overbooked; I get angry because I waited 2 months for this appointment and now they're telling me I need to wait till March to book another one. I say this is unacceptable, and was given a date in February by an annoyed employee even though I'm the one that gets the short end of the stick? Now I'm looking at my calendar and realize that the February appointment just passed and no confirmation call no missed appointment call. It completely slipped my mind and now I'm going to have to call in for a new appointment which will be another month or 2. I've been waiting to get his teeth cleaned since I signed up for this insurance in SEPTEMBER. We took our cat to Banfield because he wouldn't stop vomiting for over 24 hours and would not eat or drink anything. The vet Dr. Ahluwalia did many "test$" on him, all the results came back normal. They gave him a anti-nausea shot and prescribed him anti-nausea medication for us to give him before feeding. The doctor told us we should buy special food for our cats stomach, which we did. Our cat continued to not eat or drink for 2 days after the appointment, we had to force feed him with a syringe to get food into him. He died just 6 days after the first signs of illness. We were about to take him to the vet ER when we discovered he was dead. I'm not blaming Banfield for anything, but from my experience they lacked the thoroughness and weren't informative. Overall they didn't seem to care about my questions. The doctor failed to mention that a cat his age is prone to liver and kidney problems. Failed to mention that if a cat doesn't eat for a certain amount of time he could have liver failure. We had to do all this research by ourselves. They did not go into any explanation of how to deal with your sick cat. I asked how long I should feed my cat this special food or if there's a recommended amount of time and the receptionist just shook his head with no answer. Horrible. I have found all the local Banfield to be a terrible place to take your dog. You sign up for a scam where you pay 30$ a month for a year and get "a discount of meds and free immunization and doctors visits." In reality, if you have a sick dog they refuse to see him because they are overbooked and then recommend you take him to the animal hospital and pay 200 dollars. Also, even though you are signed up for this program you still pay 100-300$ per visit and if you try to cancel they charge you. Every time I have called the staff is incompetent and can't answer a simple question that is if they even answer the phone. They honestly don't care about your pets they only care about getting money. I will never take my pet here again. read more

Kinda a long story but , I went for a interview it went extremely well, I was told come in for a observational interview to see how the employees were there and see if I like it the lady I spoke with was very nice and friendly but I was in for a surprise. I saw why she wanted me to see the employees when I showed up. I was never more upset, sad and horrified all in one . DO NOT TAKE YOUR ANIMALS HERE !! I was in the back room observing the workers at this hospital calling animals names and swearing at them because they are scared and squirming getting blood drawn.. I found this behavior disgusting because who likes the doctors? What if your doctor swore in your face when you were scared? Animals deserve nothing but the best treatment.. One guy actually took blood out of a dogs neck with suspected heart worm, WITHOUT gloves and spilled the blood all over his hands and clothes and just poured a bit of peroxide on his shirt to clean it and didn't wash his hands and proceeded to handle other animals. I have never felt so sick In my life I have family who go here and they have switched . DON'T LET THEM FOOL YOU THEY SMILE IN YOUR FACE AND DO THIS IN THE BACK ROOM FOR A REASON!!! I could have stayed for my observational interview all day but I was so disgusted and sad because the animal neglect I had to leave after 30 minutes. Be Aware! Banfield is a wellness practice, wellness visits take priority over sick dogs. High turnover rate. New vet almost every visit although they are all very nice. My dog, a wellness plan patient of 3 years got very sick. I couldnt get an appointment for several days so I had to bring her to Woburn Veterinary Hospital that night spending $500.00. The next day when I called for a follow up at Banfield, I was unable to get an appt for a week. I called a wonderful veterinary hospital in Marblehead telling them the situation and they saw Layla that day.They continued caring for her for the next three months till I needed to put her to sleep. The priority at banfield is wellness visits. A cust svc spec i spoke with from the wellness plan told me that. Sick animals must go to emergency hospitals if they cant wait to be seen . I always thought in the 17 years that I have had cats and dogs, all vets put sick animals ahead. Not Banfield. Also, there is no way to get out of Banfield Wellness Plans no matter the circumstances. We went the Salem Banfield and met with Jacob, the Vet Tech who did a quick assessment of our Salvatore, and sent us immediately to Massachusetts Veterinary Hospital in Woburn; where we received a diagnosis and treatment. This place is one huge scam! They'll take your money and force you into a plan which offers extremely poor veterinary services with inexperienced veterinarians and when you try to cancel they make it impossible. I had my dog neutered at this hospital and my new veterinarian is shocked at how poor the surgery was performed. They disfigured his stomach! The forgot to remove the stitches and he has had several severe inflammations. Its been five months and the stitches are still popping out of his skin and there is puss and extreme swelling. This place should be shut down, I don't know where their vets went to school, probably not even in this country. AWFUL!!!!! I hate Banfield! read more

Well to start if i could give a negative star if I could Dont take your pets here with these new vets I had been taking my two dogs there for the past 5-6 years. My dogs alway saw Dr. Watson whom i would give 5 stars to. Since Dr Watson left I have had to see 2 different vets. You can tell they are just out of school and very cocky and arrogant and they dont listen to the pet owner! Both of my dogs have CHRONIC issues that will never go away and their symptoms are just managed by medicine (which Dr Watson would fill for me) These New vets would not refill the dogs medicine unless they saw them they then had me repeat the same test that Dr Watson had performed. I told these new vets that they didnt need these tests we already knew what there problems were ( one had even been diagnosed at Angel Memorial and had seen a dermatologist . I told them they were not new patients and to go back and read their record and they will see that their issues are CHRONIC. These new vets insisted I have these test repeated I felt they were pushy and made me feel like a bad dog owner if i didnt do these tests So i did the tests because they made me feel gulity and which costs me over $ 500 between both dogs And would you guess? The test results was what I told them it would be. The final straw was when they wanted to do a skin scraping on one of them I told them the test was going to be negative and his skin condition was just allergies... again they wouldnt listen and made me feel guilty so i did the test and guess what..... it was negative just like i told them i t would be and the dr didnt even come out to tell me the results she sent the tech out to tell me and that i should bring hime to Angel Memorial to see a dermatologist there Now if they had read his record they could have seen that i had alraeady done that and that my dog is allergic to everything and was being managed by medication that dr watson ordered. Also on the other dog who is 14 years old and has 1 eye the other eye was removed a few years ago and has the same problem with the other eye I know this will probaly be his demise but this new vet wanted to test his eye again and suggested maybe having it removed I told her i would not do that to him again and that he was 14 years old and her response was age is not a disease I found that to be very insensitive and my dog went thru hell after that surgery where i thought i was going to have to put him down i would not put him that procedure again So againgthey didnt listen I feel they are pushy rude and just are trying to make money I dont feel they really care So dont bring your pets here These read more

I called a few weeks ago to schedule a first appointment for my dog. He is a patient at another vet, but because I had a coupon for a free consult and pet exam I decided to give Banfield a try. I came in to my appointment this morning, and as I was being checked in informed the receptionist (who was helpful and sweet) that I wasn't able to print out the coupon, but had a screenshot of it on my phone. She informed me that I needed an actual hard copy of the coupon for it to be honored. I asked if I could come back that same morning to bring a hard copy after the appointment and was told no. I also asked if I paid the consult now and brought the coupon after, would I get a refund? Again, no. My dog doesn't do well with other dogs and is nervous and will bark incessantly, so it is an ordeal to just visit the vet which is why I asked if I could come back later and bring a printed copy of the coupon after the appointment. My estimate was over $200 for this visit, so I was surprised they would let me walk out for less than $50 bucks. I had also asked about and was interested in having a thorough cleaning done of his teeth, which is another $250. I was already registered, so even if I didn't come back with the coupon they could've billed me the $46 bucks as they had all of my information. I had even signed for the vaccines he was getting that morning. I thanked the receptionist, but told her i didn't want to pay the $46 consult. I left there and will just schedule an appointment with my regular vet. I understand there are rules to be followed, but it doesn't seem Banfield is willing to work with their customers. Love banfield. Have been this one and Danvers and both were pleasant experiences. The staff are all animal lovers and it's obvious they love what they do and do it with great care! You can't beat the price and it's better for the animals, make it much more enjoyable walking them into petsmart with toys and such. they forget they're there for shots or to be groomed. read more
