I had a nice lunch here the other day with a friend! They have lots of options and the prices are very affordable. I tried the ginger sauce special with chicken. The service was friendly and there was plenty of seating (although parking was a little tough). My friend took me here saying it was his absolute favorite thai place. I can see why. The minute I walked in the place just smelled like fish sauce and I knew itd be legit. We got the pad thai, fried rice, and green curry. Everything was delicious! The spice is pretty high, we got a 2.5 which was good, but definitely spicier than expected. I found the pad thai to look a bit plain, but flavor was amazing and i loved the noodle texture. Although i prefer the bean sprouts as a topping, it was good mixed in. Gathered for lunch with some coworkers at Bangkok 54 recently and came away impressed. While it's nothing fancy and is located in a nondescript shopping center, the food and service were both very good. I had the red curry lunch special with chicken. This came with a choice of soup or salad -- I chose the soup. All of the lunch specials are also accompanied by jasmine rice. Now, this is authentic Thai Food! I stopped in for an early lunch and ordered the "Green Curry" for under $10. It comes with your choice of a salad or soup. The flavors were beyond amazing! I knew that it was going to be good the moment I saw it. The sweet and salty broth complimented the vegetables and chicken so well. I could've just drank the liquid and been fine with it. As you can tell in my photos, I ate every bit of it. I almost licked the plate too but I was a bit shy. For the price point and quality meal, you can't beach this lunch deal! I've always wanted to try lad na, but have been unfortunately thwarted in my attempts to get it at other places (ran out, restaurant closed, etc.) so I was pleasantly surprised and glad to see it on the menu here! The gravy is flavorful and hearty. The portion size is also decent for the price. The squid had a nice texture but I do wish it had more flavor. The employees are always welcoming and happy to have guests. You can tell that the food is authentically made. The sweetness and spiciness of the red curry is so strong yet delicate and always satisfies my cravings for Thai delicacies. We live just around the corner from Bangkok 54 and feel lucky to have such a great Thai restaurant so close to us. I was skeptical at first, but the noodles we got from here were outstanding. Even my parents, who are both originally from Bangkok, thought the food was tasty. That says it all. The first Yelp review for this business was posted in 2010, but the print menu says, "Since 1992." It's located in Falconbridge Center, the strip mall at the corner of highway 54 and Farrington Road, just off I-40 exit 273. Bangkok 54 is sandwiched in between The Mardi Gras bowling and games entertainment center and a Jersey Mike's Subs. This is a casual restaurant with not much to speak of in terms of ambiance and decor. They have neat, blown-up photographs of Thai landmarks and, during my visit, they had Thai pop music playing in the background. It's not a big place. The dining room looks to seat about 35 customers comfortably (three booths, the rest tables) and there are a couple tables outside on the tiny, barely-covered patio. The restaurant reopened for dine-in months ago. I got takeout and called my order in. It was ready in about 20 minutes and I paid in person with my credit card. The menu on Bangkok 54's website appeared to be up-to-date with the in-restaurant menus I looked at while I was waiting. You can access their online menu here: http://thaibk54nc.com/menu/. The restaurant serves many dishes that are typical of a Thai restaurant in America, from massaman curry to catfish. They don't really serve anything too unique though their beef noodle soup (which my mom likes to make at home) and "rotee" (a.k.a. roti, Thai crepes with condensed milk and sugar) did catch my eye. In general, I think the selection is good; it's nice and varied. Prices are about average for a casual Thai restaurant with most entrees costing about $13 each and special entrees costing $15-17 each. $10-and-under lunch specials are available too. I ended up ordering four of the six noodle dishes offered (all the non-soup options) and papaya salad: * SS6. Papaya Salad ($8) - tomatoes, carrots, peanuts, lime juice, and green papaya * N1. Pad Thai with chicken ($11) - sauteed rice stick noodles, eggs, bean sprouts, scallions, and ground peanuts with Thai seasonings * N2. Pad Kee Mow with pork ($12) - pan-fried rice noodles with eggs, broccoli, onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, and basil leaves in a brown sauce * N3. Pad See Ew with pork ($12) - fresh flat rice noodles, pan-fried with broccoli, eggs, and special Thai sweet soy sauce * N4. Lad Na with beef ($12) - stir-fried flat noodles, broccoli, bok choy, and Thai gravy sauce Everything was excellent. I think my favorite was the Pad See Ew with pork, but the Pad Thai and Pad Kee Mow were outstanding too. On all the noodle dishes, you can choose the protein or go all veggie. Prices vary depending on what you choose. The options are chicken, tofu, mixed vegetables, beef, pork, shrimp, squid, and scallops. What I liked about Bangkok 54's Papaya Salad was its freshness, variety of ingredients, and it was prepared with plenty of fish sauce which wasn't mentioned as an ingredient on the menu (probably to not scare people away from the dish). Fish sauce is a vital ingredient in Thai papaya salad. It's super salty, but delicious and a staple ingredient in Thai cuisine. It would've been nice if there were more tomatoes and carrots in the Papaya Salad we received, but I'm just being nit-picky. The quality of the ingredients was good. All of the noodles were flavorful and well-balanced. They tasted fresh and each was quite satisfying. The noodle textures were spot-on, from the Pad Thai to the Lad Na. They had terrific bite and chew to them. The Pad Kee Mow is the same thing as "drunken noodles" (pad kee mao). Overall, I just find stir-fried noodles (not just Thai noodles, but any country's noodles) to be appetizing and comforting. What I like in particular with the Pad See Ew is the sauce that is used, giving the dish a somewhat sweet flavor. The Lad Na (rat na) is served in a thick sauce. Normally rat na is served with Chinese broccoli (gai lan), but Bangkok 54 uses bok choy instead. I prefer gai lan. Of the noodles, the Lad Na was our least favorite. Individually, I'd rate it three to four stars and the others, four to five stars. Service was fantastic. We look forward to trying more dishes here in the future. For now, my five-star rating for Bangkok 54 is only based on the dishes above. read more

My wife's and my food was delicious and the service was excellent. We both had Thai Curries, Green and Red. The Red Curry Shrimp could not have been cooked more perfect, the shrimp had to be very fresh. The Boss says this is her favorite Thai Place where ever she has been and after eating here I agree it is pretty exceptional. Just Be patient, you will wait at peak hours (Lunch and I am Assuming Dinner Rush). I ordered Pad See Ew and steamed dumplings and the Boss ordered Pad Thai, great health score, popular place and a line out the door with 2 wonderful servers who did a great job with a full dining room and a line out the door. The place it self is sort of cool and comfortable and a Health Score of 96 is pretty amazing. If I were closer this would be my new regular place and because I am not you need to be my regular if you are living near here. Overall, I was not impressed. In fact, I left with a bad taste in my mouth, and I am not talking about the food. I waited patiently several minutes to be acknowledged. Note, I am black. Why is this important? Because a Caucasian customer came in behind me, and the server/manager immediately offered to help him, even though it was obvious I had been there first. The gentleman even asked her why she was helping him versus me, and she gave him a lame excuse. Am I saying she was racist? No, what I am saying is the optics were terrible, and at minimum, she exhibted poor customer service towads me. In fact, I found her tone and demeanor to be rude and dismissive. She was definitely lacking in social graces. As for the food, I had the grilled chicken. It was bland by itself, but fine with the Chile sauce on it. I've made peace with Bangkok 54. I've enjoyed a few solid meals since my very negative review from 2019. BE AWARE: when you order you will be asked what spice level you want between 1-5. The first level is basically a medium level at most Thai places. The second level is that medium level supplemented by a generous handful of bird chiles. If you order levels three, four or five your food will be seasoned with ghost peppers, not bird peppers or any sort of Thai chile. You will basically get the level two spice amount supplemented by heaping handfuls of dried ghost pepper. It's an affront to Thai cooking but at least it caters to whomever just wants their food as spicy as humanly possible. At this point I just order level two and then ask for the spice tray. It's not quite as spicy as I like but it's not going to be ruined by copious amounts of ghost pepper. read more

wanted to update this as we finally had a chance to dine in & see how everything is in person! the inside's decorated so nicely & very thai-oriented which is so pretty! we were greeted once we came in & told we could take any table. there were a few other customers dining in around 6:30 on a tuesday night. our server asked us what we'd like to drink then once she came back with our beverages, we were ready to order. we typically order the same thing--choo chee fish with tilapia, pad see ew, shrimp pineapple fried rice. my grandpa wanted the fried dumpling, which was really good as well! i would also recommend the fresh rolls! we waited not even ten minutes for all our dishes to arrive & it's always so delicious! my mom loves the flavor of the choo chee fish & my grandpa really enjoyed the pineapple fried rice. i personally love them all! we also ordered a chicken pad thai to-go for my sister & once we were ready for the check, she remembered to bring it out for us! she also remembers how we always order the same dishes & i told her next time we'd love to try what she recommends! if you're not sure what to order, she will definitely help you out! overall, the atmosphere of the whole place is so peaceful & leaves you with a wholesome feeling. it's great for families, friends, or even just yourself! i love how they make you feel so welcomed & are familiar with regular customers! this is by far one of my go-to places for dinner! read more

This place has spicy and it's no joke. They use ghost pepper from levels 3 and above. We took caution and ordered 3s to try the spicy pepper.. it was a huge mistake. I couldn't enjoy the massaman curry or pad thai without crying for water. I had to order the same dishes again at a level 2 to enjoy the taste again. I lost a few taste buds and can't imagine what a 5 would be like. The flavor was delicious after the spicy level was adjusted to our amateur taste buds. I've been going to Bangkok for many years, and Bangkok is and has always been a solid choice whether dining in or for takeout. It's not always perfect, but it always leaves me wanting more. The Pad Thai is truly unique and I prefer it to any other Pad Thai I've had (and I once spent two weeks in Thailand purely searching in vain for a better one). Another favorite of mine is the house fried rice. I recommend asking for the spice tray and limes, and you'll be able to modify it to your liking. The service is great and professional. I've long graduated from UNC and moved on from Chapel Hill, but Bangkok 54 is still one of the few restaurants I return to when I visit, just for the Pad Thai. It's been 7 years since I was introduced to this place, and things have changed, including the interior decor, the pricing, the staff, and the type of spice they use in the food. The way they make the Pad Thai has changed a bit as well, but amazing flavor hasn't changed much, and it's what I'll continue to return for. My go-to is the chicken Pad Thai, spice level 1; anything above spice level 2 gets real spicy real fast, so I would approach with caution. You can add extra noodles for $2, and it increases the portion size enough to split the dish in half and save for a takeaway meal to eat later. Overall, definitely a must-try and an established top contender in Chapel Hill for delicious Thai food. read more
