My partner and I stumbled upon this hidden gem while out and I am so glad we did!! The owners perfected every detail from the beautiful decor, serving dishes all the way to the plating of food. The location sits in a small strip mall. From the outside you would never know how well put together and clean the establishment is. The staff were incredibly friendly. If I gave Bangkok 54 five stars ( https://www.yelp.com/biz/bangkok-54-chapel-hill ) then I have to give Thai Palace five stars. These are both solid Thai restaurants on highway 54 in Chapel Hill. I could easily give these places "just" four stars, but I think they are great for the area so I'm giving them generous fives. My wife and I have been to Bangkok 54 numerous times because of its proximity to our apartment. We've been very happy with it. That said, I think these two restaurants are equal in terms of food and service. If we lived closer to Thai Palace, we'd come here more often. The two restaurants are only 2.6 miles from one another. For those familiar with Bangkok 54, here's a list of advantages that Thai Palace has: 1. Thai Palace is bigger. There's more seating. They even have a private room. 2. Thai Palace is nicer. It has a more elevated ambiance. Their tableware and dish presentation is more beautiful too. 3. Thai Palace offers dishes that Bangkok 54 does not. Examples include Soft Shell Crab ($20.95), Crying Tiger ($19.95), and soups served in hot pots (e.g., Tom Kha Talay and Poe Tak, $16.95 each). 4. Thai Palace has online ordering. Bangkok 54 does not. Thai Palace is located in the Glenwood Square shopping center ( https://www.yelp.com/biz/glenwood-square-shopping-center-chapel-hill ), same as the Fresh Market, on 54 (Raleigh Rd) near 15-501 (Fordham Blvd). It's just east of UNC's campus. We visited on a Tuesday for dinner and the place was moderately busy with a combination of both dine-in and takeout customers. There were two lady servers busy taking care of the entire dining room and to-go orders. The restaurant can be deceivingly large because the dining room is partitioned into a few different spaces. They have outdoor patio (umbrella-covered) seating too. Here's what the two of us got: Appetizers A1. Sate Chicken (5 skewers for $7.95) - grilled chicken marinated with Thai herbs and coconut milk; served with peanut sauce and cucumber salad Soups S3. Tom Yum Soup ($10.95) - hot and sour soup with chicken (or tofu), mushrooms, lemongrass, kaffir leaves, lime juice, and hot pepper House Specialties H3. Bangkok Duck ($20.95) - crispy deboned duck topped with panang curry paste and coconut milk with broccoli; comes with bowl of rice Entrees E8. Pad Eggplant ($13.95) - with pork (+$1) stir-fried with chili, garlic, bell peppers, Thai basil and eggplant; comes with bowl of rice Beverages * Thai Iced Tea (Cha-Yen) ($3.95) * Singha ($5) - "the original Thai beer" Everything was delicious, especially the Bangkok Duck -- that was a recommendation from our server. It was outstanding. The duck had excellent texture and the panang curry sauce was spot-on; rich, sweet, and nutty. We love vegetables and liked how the dish came with plenty of broccoli. The plating was eye-catching as well. The Pad Eggplant was colorful and filling. For entrees like this, you can choose from 10 different/combinations of "proteins." I put proteins in quotes because one of the options is mixed veggies. The pork that came with our Pad Eggplant and the chicken that came with our Sate were good quality. In general, the vegetables in all of the dishes were fresh. I enjoyed the Pad Eggplant which came with big, appetizing chunks of purple eggplant. My wife thinks it was either Chinese or Japanese eggplant. This is another example of a dish that Thai Palace offers that Bangkok 54 does not. (We've gone to Bangkok 54 so much that it's hard for me not to make comparisons.) Along with Sate Chicken, Sate Pork is an option. The chicken skewers were tender and tasty. The condiments were great. I especially liked the cucumber salad which had carrot, red onion, and I think sugar and vinegar. Both the cucumber salad and peanut sauce - which was sweet and savory - were perfect with the lightly-marinated chicken. The Tom Yum Soup was terrific. It was light, refreshing, and the broth was addictive. I couldn't stop drinking it. It was robust and full of flavor; savory, tangy, mildly spicy, and comforting. One bird's eye chili was served in the soup in case we wanted more heat. I recommend everything we ordered, with my personal favorite and top recommendation being the Bangkok Duck. Again, everything was plated beautifully. The Thai Iced Tea was yummy and par for the course (most are yummy). The Singha hit the spot. That's the only Thai beer they offered here. They also had Asahi Japanese beer and a couple local beer selections plus sake and wine. Service was fantastic. I liked how they spread out dine-in parties evenly. The servers were polite, appeared experienced, and worked efficiently. The Wi-Fi password was Padthai123. I have T-Mobile and the signal inside was poor so the Wi-Fi definitely came in handy. We look forward to returning and trying some different dishes including their noodle dishes. read more

I ordered the Thai Palace Duck (medium spicy level) over the phone for takeout. I was told it would be ready in 20 minutes. Their communication regarding takeout was slightly disorganized. Upon arriving 2" minutes later, I inquired about my takeout. However, they said it would take about another 20 minutes. After waiting another 5-10 minutes and seeing the people at the front switch, I inquired for an update on my order. However, it turned out that my order was already done and waiting up front amongst other takeout orders! It comes with a side of rice. The overall taste was good and the spicy was pleasant. The portion size was okay, but I was expecting more for the price. There were some small bones in duck, but nothing major. There were very few pieces of mushroom. It was in a shopping center that had plenty of parking. There was comfy seating at the front waiting area too. Overall this was an okay experience. Really good Thai food! I tried the pad kee maow or drunken noodles (medium spice), and they were really tasty! I think medium was the perfect spice level. It had a decent amount of chicken and veggies, but however, the serving size was smaller than what I usually get at Thai restaurants. Tl;dr: Cute restaurant, attentive staff, great cooking technique that yields great flavor! Stopped here for dinner before a game at UNC and was surprised to walk into an empty restaurant-- we didn't realize they opened at 5pm, and we walked in at 5:02pm. Regardless, we were seated toward the middle of the restaurant and got to see some fun decor inside! Look up at the ceilings when you get there, they did a great job. We all ordered flat rice noodles: Two pad see ew, and one pad kee mao (drunken noodles). The pad see ews came out together and were very fresh and hot! It was still sizzling by the time they came to the table. Their taste was light and sweet, balanced nicely with some saltiness from the chicken. The noodles were bouncy and cooked well (sometimes places can overcook the noodles and everything clumps together making it mush) so they held the sauce very nicely. When you're eating a stir fry, the smoky char you taste is due in large to the cooking technique called wok hei, and this places does a very good job doing that! Some other Thai restaurants lack in that aspect so this place is a winner for me. read more

The pad woonsen here is amazing! It's hard to find glass noodles, so I found this restaurant with a Google search. It was a little pricier than 2 other restaurants which also offer glass noodles, but it was still about the same and I figured that would be a higher quality dish. Then I saw that you can get pad woonsen with squid and that it's not any more expensive than the shrimp, so I thought that was unique and exciting! Each serving of pad woonsen has 12-14 pieces of squid, and it flavors the noodles too. Perhaps there's also fish sauce. I luv seafood, so the flavor surpassed my expectations! There was just a little veggies (which is the way I like it), and the noodles were brownish, indicating the presence of ample sauce and seasoning. (I got the medium spice level). The portion size was satisfactory, and I split it into 2 servings. That's a pretty good value! I sometimes add shrimp I buy from the grocery store for a little more flare, but you can also add extra when you order. Also, while I didn't dine in the restaurant, the decor is done-up, and the receptionist was enthusiastic in their service! I wish this restaurant was in Cary instead of Chapel Hill so I could go more often! My boyfriend and I came here for dinner one night and had a really good experience with both the food and service. I got the Pad Makua (choice of meat - I chose tofu - stir fried with eggplant, garlic, bell pepper, and Thai basil in a basil sauce) because I love eggplant in Thai dishes. He got the Jungle Curry (choice of meat - he chose chicken - and mixed vegetables in a spicy red curry). The waiter warned him that it would be really, really spicy and it definitely delivered! Then we had the Thai custard with sticky rice for dessert which I was really excited to get! I haven't seen it on many menus in the Triangle area and it's one of my favorite desserts. I ordered the Pad Makua Chicken medium spice and it came out pretty quickly. Flavor wise it was good though I wished it had a stronger kick because it wasn't spicy at all to me. I've been here several times and honestly it's just okay. My most recent visit I got a tom yum pork noodle soup and it didn't taste the way tom yum would've been in California. I guess my expectations are pretty high. However it was pretty filling. My friend got a salad there. I forgot which one it was but it was super salty. I didn't believe her so she some other friends tried it too and agreed it was terrible. The waiter kindly took away the plate and let her order something different. I've had their pad Thai here and it wasn't too bad. There are better thai places but if you're not too picky this place would do. This place is very cute though.
