I've dined around the Royal Oak area for a solid Thai place and Bangkok Bistro takes the cake. Nothing overly fancy, just good, solid, Thai food. Great Gang Gai! The spice is pretty true to standard. I've been a big fan of Thai food ever since I used to go to the old Bangkok Cuisine on Metro Parkway in Sterling Heights, which was the only Thai restaurant in town in the 1980's. We've visited a number of Thai restaurants in the intervening years, and Bangkok Bistro has become our standard. The food is always wonderful, and we love to try new things that we haven't tried (although the Pad Thai is usually a staple because no Thai meal would feel complete to us without it.) When my daughter comes home from college, a trip to Bangkok Bistro is mandatory. We'd pay whatever it took for this quality of food, but the prices are quite reasonable in any case. The staff recognizes us when we come in and one of the waitresses always wants to know the latest and greatest on our daughter, whether she's with us or not! We LOVE this place. BTW, the menu describes the Chiang Rai Eggplant as "excellent." Truth in advertising! Try it. It's amazing! read more

Had the pad Thai medium spice. Food was amazing and the spice level was exact. Lost two whole stars because the service was terrible. The guy never spoke once, took our orders and walked away, good thing we knew exactly what we wanted because he didn't ask any specifications. Had to ask for straws and silverware even after our food and drinks were in front of us. This place is close to my work, so when I have a hankering for Thai, I come here because it's fast and convenient. I've never had a sit-down meal here, but I get carry out 1-2 times a month, and it's good. Not my favorite Thai place, but I would say it's average to slightly-above average. Service has always been fast and friendly. The fried shrimp appetizers (I forgot their exact name) are tasty. I've had the pad thai on a few occasions and it was ok, but I found it to be a bit on the oily side. Pad ped is pretty good, although I personally like the sauce at Sukhothai better. read more

I'm no idea why this restaurant has changed . I used to like this restaurant before, but it was awful last week. We've never waited to get our food so long before（Only 2people were eating at that restaurant that time. ）, and I asked to get my kid's booster seat to the waitress but never bring it to me. We had dinner here. It was a SAT night at 6:30 and there was no trouble getting a table. We were concerned/surprised things were so empty. The things we liked...the food was hot and very good. The portions were large--plan to share. The menu was extensive. The staff were pleasant and helpful. The reason we didn't give stars...It took 5-10 minutes to get menus for everyone at the table. When the food came out, it was one plate at a time as it was cooked. Don't know if that was because of the kids, but it was odd. The scallops were really small. This restaurant is a great place if you want tasty Thai food, great service and affordable prices. I like the feel of the restaurant because the design is modern but the decor is traditional Thai. I am thai so I know my thai food. Whenever I go to a different Thai Restaurant I always order the pad thai, because honestly that is the best way to know if the place is good or not and this place has great pad thai. Someone mentioned earlier that they don't sell liqour. That's because in Troy, MI a liqour license is over $100,000. Thats a pretty penny especially when you are located next to a sports bar (Bailey's). I recommend this place to everyone! read more

My friend and I went here after a huge craving for pad thai. The decor inside was great and the service as definitely fast, but for good pad thai, it wasn't that great. The pad thai was definitely too sweet and very oily. I took home some leftovers and there was a thick layer of oil over it. Went there last night for dinner and was really disappointed with both food and service. Ordered beef and seafood salads. Both dishes did not have any fresh Thai herbs like basil or cilantro. This place has the BEST pineapple fried rice EVER. I also love their tom yum/hot and sour soup. I have tried many other thai places trying to find a pineapple fried rice to match this since I moved away from the area but have yet to find it. The taste of the rice is something that is just so delicious. It's a very nice combination of sweet and spicy when you make it medium. I used to eat it at least once a week. As for the hot and sour soup that they give complimentary during lunch, it is one of a kind. Every other thai places gives a broth based type. I miss this place so much. I've been eating Thai food since the mid 1980's, when the ONLY place you could find it in Metro Detroit was at Bangkok Cuisine, a tiny place in a ratty little strip mall at Metro Parkway and John R. (There was a pet store next door and we used to joke about what they did with the animals that died.) Since that time, I've eaten a lot of Thai food in a lot of different places, and my favorite nowadays is Bangkok Bistro. The food is consistently great, and the service is always warm and welcoming. Yes, the Chiang Rai Eggplant is a favorite, as is the Phuket Fish, Pineapple Curry (for that matter, any of the curry dishes) and, of course, the standard-bearer Pad Thai. I'm embarrassed to admit that I haven't dived deeply enough into the menu because it's really hard to not order the Pad Thai, and often we're dying for a curry. Since there's usually only two or three of us, that limits our ability to experiment. We haven't had anything that wasn't, at least, something we'd order again given the opportunity. read more
