I stumbled upon this bead shop while exploring Cary Street, and it's a fascinating spot for crafters and spiritual seekers alike. With over 100 religious items--from Christian charms to Islamic pendants, Greek symbols, Indian motifs, and Celtic runes--it's a rich and diverse collection. That's why it was so disheartening to see that not a single item represented Judaism. No Stars of David, no Chai charms, no Hebrew script--nothing. When I asked a staff member, the response was a direct "no," which felt jarring given the size of the store's collection. Jewish tradition spans millennia and is full of meaning, resilience, and beauty. Its complete absence is troubling. If there's room for Norse runes and prehistoric talismans, there should be room for a Star of David. That being said, I found many of the beads reasonably priced between $0.50-3.50 if you dig around. The staff member I asked about Jewish items did ring up my few small purchases at twice the price. Perhaps due to all the reviews, I found the staff to mind their own business and not pay attention to us (we are different races and both mixed). First off, the store is gorgeous and extremely organized, BUT like many of the people reviewing here, the owner is extremely rude and will inappropriately ban you from the store without explaining how important it is to carry a tray even if it doesn't make sense if you are buying only one item. She irrationally banned me from the store. I just didn't see the logic in holding a big tray for a tiny item. This woman seems dangerous as she will try to accuse you of something you did not do....another reviewer said she lunged at her over the counter. If you bead - this is gonna be paradise for you. I've never seen so many options for beading and bracelet and jewelry-making in one place in my life! They have all sorts of bead types, sizes and colors. They have charms of all kinds, threads of all kinds, depths, lengths, width, etc. I don't make jewelry and so I have no idea what the actual terms or names for stuff is - but I took a bunch of pictures and saw a bunch of cute things I could make. If you are looking for something specific I bet the odds are you are going to be able to find it here - or something close enough that it won't matter. Today as I was shopping in beads and bangles. The store owner Shirley Moore began following around the store for about 10-15 mins. To be sure I wasn't mistaken, I walked to different spots to see if she followed me. After I realized she was following me. I asked her. She agreed and said my jacket was bulky and open. My jacket was zipped and my Fanny pack was under my army vest. I mentioned was it because I was black and the style jacket I had. She agreed. However when I mentioned I was a customer, she looked relieved to know I have shopped with them previously. This heart breaking to know that African Americans treatment in this location is based off is we are recognized. Today my friends and I went into Bangles and Beads, we were so excited to go into the store and look at all the pretty beads. Im very respectful when it comes to local businesses and artist, and stealing is never on my radar. My friends and I walked into the store admiring all the pretty beads, by the time we got to the back of the store old women with grey hair decided to follow us throughout the entire store. It made me feel very targeted and uncomfortable so we decided to just leave before things escalated. Plus most of the beads are not worth what they are priced for. Great selection of beads and prices are very reasonable. Folks working are friendly, but do ask that you leave your backpack with them at times, or ask that you zip your purse. It can seem a little off-putting, but shoplifting in local shops in Carytown is def an issue. read more

I am sure that the shop selection is nice but I did not have an opportunity to find out. As mentioned by other reviewers they make you leave your bag at the counter - I understand having to leave my tote bag, but my handbag (containing my wallet, phone and keys) as well? The person behind the counter was rather rude so since I only needed a few beads for a needlepoint project I felt it was not worth leaving my valuables unattended for someone to possibly steal. Me and my best friend went there for job interviews, and the older lady that works there didn't give off good energy. She was pretty rude, and wasn't really that welcoming. I gave this place 2 stars because they have a great selection of beads. A bit expensive. Why I gave this place a low rating is because of the customer service experience I received. I bought a selection of beads (cheaper ones) which totaled up to about $100.00 which I paid with my credit card. The older woman there made a comment as if the cashier must've rang me up wrong .....the older woman made a comment "that looks like more than $100.00" I felt uncomfortable and seems like she was insinuating that I have more beads in my bag then I paid for. I have been coming into this shop for years and have spent hundreds of dollars on beads. Every time you come through the door, they assume you are going to steal from them. I understand about theft, every business experiences it. But it has gotten to be a horrible shopping experience. I brought my own beads in to match them and the owner stood behind me watching me. I also took photos of three new dresses and was looking for specific beads to match. I took out my phone to view my photo and she immediately asked me to zip my purse back up. I was going to purchase more, but just wanted to get out of there. This amazing gem of a store in the heart of Carytown is somewhat deceiving from the outside. You may think it's a small store filled with beads, but the shop actually goes back pretty far and stocks every bead you can imagine as well as any tool or finding you may need! This is absolutely a jewelry-maker's paradise. I can spend hours in the shop and still feel like I need more time. There's always more than one sales associate on hand to answer your jewelry questions and provide recommendations if you're looking for another opinion. After all, sometimes two creative minds are better than one! The shop also provides shallow baskets for customers to carry their intended purchases- I find this super helpful because it allows you to lay the strands next to one another and conceptualize different designs while you sort through the bead displays. One of Richmond's special gems! This place is totally a girlie girl's DREAM! I have been shopping here for years and it's like a totally new dreamland to explore every time! They have the most beautiful stones around and I'm talking racks upon racks of the stuff. Somehow, in such a tiny store, they manage to have a HUGE selection and it's all well-organized in a very aesthetically pleasing manner. The customer service is always great. The girls are always nice and helpful as well as knowledgeable. Hands down, this place has THE BEST pendants around!! I have made some killer necklaces from their selection. Tons and tons of natural stones. It's pricey, yes, but it's real stones and very high quality, so once you realize that, it's actually fairly priced. It will cost you tons to make jewelry to sell with this stuff, but people will absolutely LOVE it! They have a website, but it doesn't even have half of what the store does. I will never go back to Bangles and Beads after my recent experience and if I could give zero stars I would. I am a silversmith and own two businesses. I occasionally shop at Bangles and Beads for inventory for my designs, and have been for over 7 years. They're prices are a bit high, but sometimes it's worth it to be able to look at their selection and feel the stones in hand. Plus, I like supporting local businesses. And when I do shop there I spend a couple hundred dollars at a time. But after the attitude of one of the employees that works there, I will never be back. It was around 2pm yesterday when I stopped in for an inventory shopping trip. I picked up a strand of beads and continued looking. One employee came up to me and offered me a basket. I politely declined and she explained it's store policy that you have to have a basket, which is more like a thin wicker tray that is super aggravating to carry around while shopping. Having to pick it up and find a place to put it down on their very limited counter space every time I want to look at something is super inconvenient and does not lead to a positive shopping experience. The last time I shopped there I couldn't use my left hand for 2 days because of the flare up it caused. I explained to her I have polymyalgia and a migratory form of arthritis and can't carry something like that cause it aggravates my wrist, but that I would keep the beads right there over my arm where they could be seen. She seemed satisfied and walked away. I turn around to another section of beads and 30 seconds after the first girl offered me a basket, another girl named Bella offered me one. Again I declined, maybe sounding slightly annoyed at that point because she had to have been right there behind me when I spoke to the first girl. So I feel like she was intentionally trying to give me a hard time. Again she said I had to. Again I told her about my disability and how it hurts to carry a tray like that around. Then she got a nasty attitude with me and in a very rude sarcastic tone told me she could carry it for me. Let me point out that her tone made it very clear she was NOT trying to be helpful and was being facetious and very disrespectful. I should have just let her be my personal shopping bag, but the way she said it upset me so much that I just tossed the beads into the tray she had shoved in front of me and left because I refuse to give my money to people who treat me like that. I've been in customer service all my life and run two businesses. If I spoke to customers that way I would be out of business! And if they keep treating people like that, they will go out of business just like all the other bead shops in the area have. There are proper ways to handle stuff like that if they are so terrified that everyone who walks in is going to steal from them. She could have POLITELY asked if she could carry them for me. Or POLITELY asked if I could leave what I was going to buy at the counter. Or hey, here's a novel idea: how about you have actual baskets people can carry over their arms while they shop. But instead she treated me like a thief and make me feel awful for having a disability. The only things I can do to help the pain I experience in my joints is to not do things that will aggravate the joint, like carry a stupid little tray around. It already stresses me out enough that I can't do all the things I used to and have to be really conscious about how I hold and carry things. So I really didn't need to feel discriminated against because of it. She made me feel like I'm not allowed to shop there because I can't tote a tray containing heavy beads around the entire store while I shop. And she made someone who was prepared to spend a few hundred dollars feel like a common thief. I did call to try and speak to the owner to tell her what happened. But the manager on duty said she wasn't available. So I explained to her what happened and she took my name and number, but not before informing me twice that they would be checking the video and audio to make sure what I told her actually happened. She could have just said she would pass on the message and my info. She didn't need to throw salt in the wound by implying I was lying. I found out later the person I was talking to was actually Bella - the same person who had been so rude pretending it was the first time she had heard of it, rather than apologizing. (I mixed up the name of the girl and didn't realize it was her I was speaking to.) I will never shop there again and you shouldn't either. Don't support people who don't care about their customers and show such disrespect for people with disabilities. You can find the same stuff online for half the price anyway. I've already found the Botswana agate beads that I was going to buy for $32 at Bangle and Beads, for $12 online with shipping. That's what I get for trying to support a local business I guess. The employees, particularly the owner have a devious way of watching and following you around the store as if you are suspected of stealing. The way that they forcefully try to make you take a tray/basket only amplifies this notion. This past Thursday I was in the store with my friend; another local artist who makes jewelry. She needed to run in quickly to pick up two items to finish up a bracelet for one of her church members. We have both frequented the store before, so she already knew exactly where to go in the store to pick out her items. She went to the back and grabbed a strand of metallic beads, and an employee offered her a basket, to which she replied that she didn't need one. She then went to the front of the store and picked up the second item and proceeded to the register to check out. As she laid her items on the front counter she took a second to look at the items side by side (there's better lighting in the front of the store) to make sure that they complimented each other. As this is happening, the owner comes over and takes he items off of the checkout counter and places them on a shopping tray. My friend took them back off of the tray and let the owner know that she was just looking at the items and was about to check out. The owner proceeded to say that it was store policy (even though it's not posted on the premises, and the employees only offer you a tray when they think you may steal). What happened next was beyond belief. The owner lunges across the counter and grabs at my friend trying to snatch the merchandise from her hand exclaiming "these are my things, not yours!" and even makes contact with her hitting her thumb. The both of us are now in shock trying to figure out what the heck is wrong with this woman. She then attempts to kick us out and gets the phone to call the police! At this point we don't leave so that we have the opportunity to explain how she escalated everything so quickly for absolutely no reason. After waiting and the police not showing up, we decide that we would call them because after all it was her actions that were aggressive and uncalled for. One of the most astonishing things about the whole ordeal was that when the cop arrived he informed us that this behavior is not out of the ordinary for her! Please repost and share this. You may not be a jeweler, but you can still help spread the word. No store owner should feel like they can treat customers as if they are thieves and/or feel as if they can put their hands on a customer. No store owner should feel as if they can threaten customers with unlawful calls to the police. First I'll start off saying the store is really cool if you like beads, bracelets and necklaces it's a cool store. But the biggest problem with going into the store is, one it's open bag policy where if you have a big they ask you to leave it with them behind the counter and two either the manager or owner is very judgmental. Just because I have pockets that are big doesn't mean I'm going to steal something. Iv never stolen anything in my entire life. Yes I understand it's around the holidays and crime might be a little higher doesn't mean a male walking into your store with big deep pockets is going to steal. I was actually thinking about going back to get a few things and even bringing my girlfriend and sister there to shop. So for anyone who actually read this and still wants to go which I'm not saying to not check out a local business. Don't go in if you have big pockets, bags or purses because you'll have to leave the bags or purse at the front counter and for all you know they may steal from you. This place is awful! Don't go there! The service is terrible, the owner is rude, and the place is totally not kid friendly. People have been kicked out for bringing their children (who were behaving beautifully by the way) and others who have needed help because they were not "beaders" have been told to come back when they know what they are doing. My suggestion is to go someplace else for your beading needs. Anywhere else really...but I absolutely recommend Fandangles. I stopped by Bangles and Beads to look for a particular type of crystal. The shop was clean and nicely organized. They have a large selection of beads, but their crystal options are more limited. Both employees I encountered were professional and friendly. They helped me look for the crystal I needed and then suggested alternatives when we couldn't find them. There were several other customers in the store while I was there, but I felt that the employees were happy to take the extra time helping me and it wasn't an inconvenience. Overall it was a good experience. I know there are a few unfavorable reviews on Yelp, but keep in mind that employees and management can change. I recommend keeping an open mind and giving them a shot if you're in need of beads. read more

They seem to treat a lot of the customers as would-be thieves; friends have reported staff is especially suspicious of people of color but I can not speak to that directly. LOTS of beads here. And my oh my, a great selection of seed beads! They had some beautiful colors that I can't find in Fredericksburg and perhaps even a shop I went to in DC. I actually found a color that I have not found anywhere else. I'm afraid to find it online because the color is never true until I see it in person. Anyway, I think it was even .50 cents cheaper than when I bought this color at a bead show in Richmond. Customer service was satisfactory. I had two chains cut and I didn't really have to seek anyone to get them cut. One of the employees asked me when I was looking at the chains. I think they also have some sort of information desk in the back. I saw customers walking up to the counter to ask questions. Prices were typical and what I expected. The terrible reviews are true. This place should be fined for their horrendous customer service, if it was a restaurant I would report them. Creative people Beware this place is full of shiny pretty things that you want to touch and explore. The employee are more like security guards. The constant pushing of baskets and taking my bead stands as I set them down to pick colors. Ive spent hundreds of dollars at this place and every time I walk out I remember why it takes years for me to go back in. I am always extra careful with what I touch and pick up but it doesn't seem to matter because the entire time I am shopping I feel as though I am a shady criminal. Follow up: The owner called herself banning me from the store based on THIS review . She told me I should have talked to her about it. I responded that we had already HAD this conversation before and it did not make a difference. I told her I had never stolen anything from her or anywhere before so I didn't appreciate the treatment. She responded "Well I don't know that"! . She then went further to say that she did not "realize it was me" when she delivered such treatment ( it should not have mattered who it was ). Then she said my friend and I kept putting our hands in our pockets getting our phones out (which apparently made her suspicious). She put the icing on the cake & claimed that I never liked her and I never talked to her or spoke (Which was false). I then felt like I was talking to a child in explaining that this was business. So this should be a non factor. She seems to think she is running a social club. Bottom line..... do not go here if you intend to take a bag, move, breathe, put your hands in your pockets, touch anything etc. She was upset with me for insinuating she was racist .... but if it acts like a duck, or quacks like a duck it's a duck! I still feel the exact same way and our last conversation solidified how I felt . Two stars for their good selection of beads and no stars for the level of professionalism I experienced on three visits over two years. The first time I was treated like it was an imposition that I should disturb their private conversations. The second time I was treated like I was about to steal something. Hovering over me, following me around but not offering any assistance. I must admit I was wearing walking boots etc. since I had just done a three-hour hike at the James. I felt uncomfortable to say the least. I went back a third time this time I happened to be dressed "nicely" and their treatment of me was marginally better but I saw others who got the same brusqueness and offensive surveillance I had previously experienced. I am white in my fifties, so race has nothing to do with it, but I'm sure if I were black I would have put it down to that as well. Every time I went I told myself that this is not a place that needs to receive my custom but ... the pull of the beads got the better of me. I have since found other local alternatives and have also shopped online for beads and findings. Not as much fun as spending 2 - 3 hours looking and touching beads in person, however, at Bangles and Beads it wasn't that much fun either. read more

They have a great selection of beads and although they seem significantly higher priced, I keep going back for the unusual finds. I make an insane amount of jewelry and sell it at my local boutique, a lot of my designs have pieces from here. Simply the most amazing bead store ever!!!. During a weekend trip with a friend to Richmond, I decided to visit one of the locate bead stores to pick up a few pieces to complete a project and to just look around. I was not expecting to walk into the most impressive bead store I have ever seen. They offer almost every bead you could think of and the staff is extremely knowledgeable, easy going and willing to help you find whatever you need. The store is well organized and offers a large selection of beads, findings, and clasps. They have so many options that if you don't see something just ask they most likely have it. During my visit, many of the staff members were involved in taking inventory but were still willing to stop and answer my questions and did not make me feel like I was annoying. This is definitely a shop I would return to Richmond to visit. read more

I had been a long time customer of Bangles and Beads but after today- I will never go back! They have the rudest employees. One of the employees asked to take my purse behind the counter after I looked inside of it at my phone to check the time. One of the other employees said hi to me at the front counter, at least she was nice. I will never go back- rude people and high prices. This store deserves to go out of business! read more
