Bangs & locks is a cute, quaint, homey salon nestled in oakland. They use all aveda products which my hair adores, and they serve delicious aveda tea! I get my hair cut and colored by Melina. She is an amazingly talented stylist and always caters to my needs. When I see her she cuts my hair PERFECT for my 1950s up-dos, and the color is a perfect bombshell blonde (which is difficult to achieve with my dark Asian hair). And another plus, she is also a great person to converse with while my hair is processing! I defiantly recommend checking out this adorable salon! read more

Ami (aka Jenny) loves cutting hair and it shows. I've been going to her for four years. She showed me that though my hair is thin, it's plentiful. In order for me to be able to style it on a daily basis, she suggested we thin it out. A lot. It was a bit scary but we did, and suddenly, I can look like a professional woman after a few minutes of work in the morning... OK, so maybe that's pushing it. I usually have food on my clothes or something. At least, I no longer look like a 15 year-old whose mother refused her access to the blow dryer. Ami is also a personal friend and a woman I admire with all my heart. She is great to talk to and I have recommended her to both my sister and my co-worker. I hear she is opening up another day of appointments and you should call and schedule an appointment with her now, because she is always booked solid. When I saw her there, she gave me the same great consultation, wash, and cut as always (I usually want the same basic thing, but she never assumes and always discusses it with me before proceeding). Laura Pellaton, the owner of this salon, has been cutting my hair for many years and has always done a fantastic job. Somehow she manages to add body to my straight hair. She's great with color too - she gives me blonde highlights that look completely natural. Another thing I enjoy about Laura and the other stylists here is that they create a relaxed and easygoing atmosphere in the salon. Bangs & Locks is located in the back of a shoping center off 51st St, so it is tiny and parking is a bit of a hassle.. But it is worth the trouble to have such a great haircut. I had my hair cut by Amber. She left it too long in the back so when I called to have it fixed, the stylists who answered assured me I could come in and have it taken care of Saturday morning at 7:45 am. As soon as I walked in thru the door, Amber looks at me with a surprised look and informs me she does not have me on her schedule. I had to wait 2 weeks for this appointment just to be turned away after paying $70 + for a haircut I'm not even happy with! Unbelievable! And this salon doesn't have an answering service so just trying to call to make an appointment is hard enough! Over priced and unprofessional!! I'll take my business elsewhere! read more

I first met Jenney at Solé Salon and happily followed her to her new location. I have had my hair cut and colored by many stylists, but none pay the amount of attention and care that Jenney does -- I always leave feeling pampered. She is clearly talented, and listens well to the sometimes vague instructions I give her so that I regularly leave with a cut and color that's way better than what I expect. After doing lots of Yelp research, decided to try Judy. Originally, she was at a salon not far from my house. That salon is no longer there and it ended up taking 45 minutes for me to get to my appointment, but it was sooooo worth it! I am so glad that I have finally found a stylist who really understands hair. My hair is difficult... fine, and pretty straight with no body but enough bend in it to make it problematic. I explained to her what I needed... that I was mostly going to just wash it and comb it, that it needed to be able to pull it back and keep it out of my face, that it needed shape, and that because I am currently a student, I only get it cut about twice a year, so it would need to be low maintenance. After doing the cut, she put a few different products in it and styled it (something I hardly ever do). It looked great when I walked out. The next day I showered and combed it and went about my morning. I looked in a mirror a few hours later, after it had dried and couldn't believe what I saw... my hair looked really cute!!! The bends took on a nice shape that looked like I had some body and it framed my neck and face wonderfully. I am so thankful that I FINALLY found MY hairstylist. This is the first time I have been happy with my hair in a number of years I really like Judy's communication skills. She asks the right questions before starting and while working on the cut. She's also super sweet and fun to chat with. At one point I was wondering if my layers should go a little shorter because I thought it might look a bit thick. Her reply was that if I didn't like it I could come back and she would take more off, but felt that shortening the layers might make the bend in my hair be unruly. She knows what she is talking about. The salon itself if unpretentious and small. I found it to be very comfortable and not as chaotic and noisy as some other salons I have been to. read more

I've been here twice. Second time Judy cut my hair. She was fabulous! Asked just the right questions about what I wanted, explained her plan, scalp massage with rose oil, a thoughtful, careful cut with conversation about how the cut would minimize what i don't like about my hair (that it flips out when drying)- 2 weeks after the cut, i still love my haircut. Love Laura she is the best! I went to another salon to have my hair colored Ombre. I wasn't happy with the results and they told me I had to wait a few weeks before they could redo it. I tried to have my colored again to be more Ombre but after a few weeks the color was not looking how I wanted. I came by for a consultation with Laura and she really listened to what I wanted. She even took the time to condition my hair on the spot with Aveda's great color depositing conditioner. It looked exactly how I wanted! About 3 years ago, I walked into Bangs & Locks, introduced myself to Ami, sat down in her chair and shared with her what I hoped she could fix: a bad haircut that had reduced me to tears on a daily basis. Armed with a drawing of the miracle I hoped for, Ami listened carefully, then washed my hair, and started cutting in a way I had never seen any hairdresser do before. Instead of pulling my hair straight and cutting it, Ami circled around my head, watching as my hair curled naturally. Slowly she cut my hair based on how it curled. Amazing! I walked out that day with a haircut that was exactly what I hoped for. I've been a faithful customer since that day and I have never experienced a bad hair day since. I have to share my experience today of getting a haircut with Laura at the new "Bangs and Locks". I scheduled an appointment for 5:30 pm and discovered at 5:40 that I was going to be really, embarrassingly late... I called in trepidation, expecting a rebuke, but Laura was as nice as could be and actually waited for me for 40 minutes, since I was her last customer of the day. As if that wasn't enough, she was as friendly and warm as could be when we met, had a cool massage chair that gave my back a massage when having my hair shampooed, discussed my hair situation with me very seriously, and gave me a fabulous haircut. She didn't rush, although I was so late - the haircut must have lasted an hour, and was precise and carefully done. I loved talking with her too; not only for the great hair tips she had but because I found it so easy to talk to her about various topics... so I HIGHLY recommend this new place to anyone wondering what to try next.
