Kelly (The owner) is amazing. She is great with blondes and is extremely accommodating. I went in for a partial highlight with one of the other stylists but I was in a time crunch and left without a full blow dry. When i woke up in the morning, it wasn't exactly what I wanted, I'm super picky so that happens a lot. I spoke with Kelly that AM and she took me right away and fixed everything, it turned out better than expected. I've also had a straightening treatment done with Tiffany and she was wonderful...super nice and explained the whole process to me. I am reviewing two separate services that I received: a wax and a haircut. The wax: the person who did my wax brought me to the back room, which was fine and looked clean. However, throughout the wax, she was extremely abrasive and kept struggling to pull the wax off. She actually hit the bed and kept ripping the protective paper layer underneath me. At the end, the entire paper was ripped and mangled and I was very confused at her technique. It was a painful experience. During my next wax at my regular salon, I was told that my hair grew in from different directions and that it made my next waxing session more difficult! This is confirmation that my wax was done completely incorrectly with lack of technique or care. The haircut: I have long, thick, straight/wavy hair. I thought the haircut was extremely basic, but when she blowdried my hair, it seemed fine. I didn't want anything drastic anyways. However, upon my next haircut, I was told AGAIN that the service I had done at Bangs of Boston lacked technique or finesse. My stylist told me that my problems with air drying/styling my hair (I did not have these problems before) stemmed from my previous haircut lacking any special technique or styling. I essentially had zero layers and zero styling done during my haircut at Bangs of Boston - Definitely not worth the $65++ that I paid. The service is not that friendly but not on the level to deserve a complaint. 3 stars because the services gave me what I needed at the end of the day but unfortunately both times lacked technique or finesse and were confirmed by my subsequent stylists. read more

Pubic hair can be complicated. There's the au naturale, then trimming, shaving, waxing, and vajazzling and florescent merkins. There's the wheat field, the bikini, the runway, the barbie doll, and all matter of shapes. Your pubic style can be a commitment! I myself, have gotten sloppy. I haven't had the money (that went to student loans), or time (that was devoted scrambling to finish my degree on time), or the motivation to maintain and so I was looking more like the red sea moss that washes up on Revere beach than I'd like. Sad emoticon. And so when I was having a deep post-graduate/quarter-life crisis mope session there was a crazy cheap Groupon for this place and I was helpless to resist! As someone who has been waxed in all sorts of salons (and on occasion private homes) from the seedy to the upscale, this place is niiiiccce. To quote the great philosopher and chemist Jesse Pinkman, "It's all like, shiny up in here!". And the people are so friendly! While I've had less painful waxes, I've never had a more meticulous one! There are no strays ANYWHERE. What!? This place is magic. Also Bangs uses a hard wax and doesn't double dip! And I got a little towel to hide my stomach pooch! I have been here for myself, but my review of this hair salon is not about my experience. In April of last year, I took my mother to get her hair cut. It was the first time I had been able to convince her to leave the house other than for doctors appointments in months. She was a cancer patient and not only had a hard time leaving the house anyway, but she was very embarrassed about what she looked like. For her birthday, I decided I was going to take her for her haircut. Bangs of Boston is less than a block from our house, so that was where we ended up. As soon as we got there, we were immediately treated like family. Laurina made her feel like a princess. She called her gorgeous, She asked her what she wanted and although she did everything she could to make sure my mom was comfortable, my mom said later "Nobody treated me like a cancer patient there." Her hair was cut and styled, her eyebrows were done (at no additional charge), and she left there that day with a smile I hadn't seen in a long time. My mom passed in October, but this day Bangs of Boston gave to us is one that I will forever be thankful for. You gave us a gift I can never repay you for. Flash forward eight months. In December, a few days before Christmas, my sister and I went in to get our hair cut. Laurina not only cut, dyed and styled my hair and cut and styled my sisters, but when we left she refused to allow us to pay her. When we asked why she said "I was able to make your mom feel like a princess. After the year you had, it's your turn." After this experience at this salon and with this stylist, I will never, ever go anywhere else. read more

I hate writing this review and not giving them more stars but I just can't. I really wanted to fall in love with this place and I just can't. I saw the darling blonde highlights they did on another woman while I was there getting my *meh* keratin, and have heard terrific things about their blonde highlights, so decided to come here to get mine touched up. I had a 20% off coupon from my previous visit so that made the full foil a manageable $96 plus tip. They happened to have an appointment available on short notice for the day before Valentines Day, so I was shocked. Well, a stylist ended up cancelling, so when I got there they were all backed up. My appointment ended up starting a solid 40 minutes late, which I understand can happen. I was quite overdue for highlights and couldn't wait to lighten it up. Well, in all the frenzy, they definitely let it lighten. And lighten. And lighten. When she finally came back to check, her eyes were wide. "Wow, it takes really well to your hair, huh?" Apparently. Well needless to say, it had overprocessed and was rather, shall we say, tacky. And like with the keratin, it was uneven. One side had finely woven highlights, one side was streaky. Pulling it back in a ponytail made me wince at the sight. Oh and it's now incredibly dry from the overprocessing, and previously I've ALWAYS been complimented by stylists on how soft my hair is. After she dried the front section of my bangs, she said, "Oh and if you don't like the exact color, you can always come in next week and we can adjust it!" I did just that. And after she toned it the following week, it looks lovely. Much more natural and flattering. I'm certain that the problems were a result of being incredibly busy, but it's really the nail in the coffin for me after the meh keratin. They really are nice people and I wanted so badly to be wowed on the second chance I gave them, but no such luck. My search for affordable blonde hair in Boston must continue! read more

I recently went to Bangs of Boston after having some not so good luck with bang trims around the city, and I figured "Why not get my bangs cut/styled at a place called 'Bangs of Boston'?" I was placed with Mona, and she did an absolutely fantastic job with my bangs as well as my haircut. I have very thick, dry, coarse hair, and she knew exactly how to handle it. I legit just left the salon less than half an hour ago and I had to rush back to the office to write this review. I've been burned by many stylists before so I was very weary to try again. Well, let me just say, I'm glad I decided to make an appointment here. I called this morning to make an appointment for a blow dry on my hair, I'm going to a holiday party in a few hours and wanted to look nice. I made it there on time for my appointment and was greeted with smiling faces (I'm big on hospitality) My stylist's name was Kristin (She is AMAZING at what she does!) My stylist was Kelly, the owner, and she was super sweet and did a great job cutting my hair. Granted, I only needed a cut and re-touching my bangs, but she did a great job. I'm a huge skeptic when it comes to trying new hair salons. From my first hair cut at age 3 until I was 21, I only had one hair dresser, so I was nervous but decided to give Bangs a try after seeing the Yelp reviews. I got the Groupon for a wash, cut, partial highlight, and blowout. The salon is really cute and was easily accessible from the Haymarket T stop, which was convenient. I had my hair done by Katie Miller and I can honestly say that my hair has never looked or felt better. Katie did an INCREDIBLE job with my hair! She really took the time to make sure I was getting exactly what I wanted. I said I wanted natural highlights and to keep my hair long, and Katie listened perfectly. It's really obvious that she loves what she's doing because it showed in how well she treated me and the effort she put into my hair. My roots needed a dye job as well, and even though it wasn't included in the Groupon, Bangs did it for only $30 (and it's normally about $100!). The customer service was great and I felt well taken care of the entire time. I will definitely be going back and I HIGHLY recommend anyone to schedule with Katie, you won't believe how amazing your hair looks! You could tell the place was running behind BUT the staff was super welcoming and you could tell they were hustling to catch up without compromising people's hair. Jody came over twice to ensure she did not forget about me, and Kelly was fantastic in keeping me in the loop as well as keeping the other girls moving. I went to Bangs because of a Groupon, and continue going because of the friendly atmosphere and amazing haircuts! I've seen Kelly (the owner, a total doll), Laurina, and Kristina, and they were all great. I've gotten haircuts and high lights and always leave the salon feeling and looking great. I have a lot of wavy hair and they know just how to cut it so it falls perfectly. I also have bangs, and they offer complimentary bang trims between appointments which is awesome and helps me resist temptation of wielding my own scissors!! I enjoy the fact that this place has a really low-key, welcoming vibe. The stylist are chatty but don't go overboard. They also are running a promo where you re-book three appointments ahead of time and get a scratch card with a prize on it, and I won a $50 giftcard. Nice little perk!!! I found Bangs of Boston via Gilt City and since it was a great deal I decided it was time for a haircut. It's been two years since my last trim/haircut because I was trying to grow it out from a very bad bob. Needless to say, I had disgusting ends and uneven layers....not to mention my bangs were not cute at all. The salon is cozy, bi-level and filled with fun personalities! I arrived a few minutes before my appointment and was taken right on time. Everyone here was really warm and friendly! I had Kelly, who (like the reviews below mention) was so fabulous to work with. Happened upon this salon when I was walking around the North End. Had not cut my hair in two years and just had not found a place I liked in the area. Lorena did a great job with my hair, getting rid of the unhealthy ends, making the layering look great for work and going out but making it very wearable at home at the same to time. But - I am so happy I ventured to the Salem Street location as it's great to see these ladies again! The stylists are all good friends and they treat you with the perfect amount of conversation. My absolute favorite is Angela - she has helped me come from Summer hair into Fall/Winter hair gracefully. She's funny and sweet and I feel like she genuinely cares about how much I enjoy my hair. I discovered this salon through a deal. I'm considering a return visit as a full priced customer, though I'm not entirely sold on the overall experience. The only issue stems around the timing of the whole affair. After arriving a couple minutes before my appointment, I was told my stylist stepped out to get a bite to eat. I was left to wait until she returned ~25 minutes past my appointment time. I totally understand the need to eat, but I wasn't a last minute appointment. If she was booked back to back and starving, management needs to make sure their stylists are getting adequate breaks scheduled. In either scenario, it shows a lack of professionalism and accountability. Had I not received a good cut, I would have never returned. While I was waiting, the staff was very friendly and apologized. Another stylist jumped in to get me shampooed while we continued to wait, which was really nice. Danielle did a fantastic job on my cut, and I truly enjoyed talking to her - she was very friendly and I felt very comfortable with her. I have long hair with layers and just needed a basic trim. She really listened and gave me a great cut and updated my layers. The style has since grown in really well. Ultimately, the whole experience took way longer than expected (a little over 2 hours!) for a very basic trim. I had plans after so it definitely impacted my night and left me feeling a little frazzled and frustrated instead of relaxed and beautified. If they can ensure a more timely experience, I wouldn't hesitate to visit again and recommend them to all my girlfriends. If I do try them again and have a better experience, I won't hesitate to update my review accordingly. I know we all have rough days, but as an impressionable new customer I'm not quite sure what to make of the experience as a whole. read more

I live in terror of bad haircuts. Growing up, my former hairdresser mother was the only person who ever touched my hair. I'm always a little apprehensive trying out a new salon, but Bangs was quite good. I went in because I had a Groupon. I meant to make the appointment with one stylist, but whoever I had spoken to on the phone must have misunderstood me because I ended up booked with someone else. Regardless, they honored the Groupon, which I really appreciated, and my stylist was AMAZING! I saw Christina and she did a wonderful job with my hair. I got about a foot taken off and she was very kind. It's a great, fun summer cut. She was very patient and reassuring throughout. She asked lots of questions, which was great. I really liked the salon (both staff and environment) and though they are a little expensive, I think splurging every now and then would be worth the cost. read more

Kelly is fantastic. Half the price of my last Newbury St salon and TWICE AS GOOD. I have fine thinning hair & one bad cut I will be paying for for 6+ months. Kelly is fantastic! My appointment started on time, I voiced my concerns, what has not worked for me in the past, what has worked for me in the past and she went to work. I was expecting to be disappointed. I just moved to MA a year ago and was with the same stylist for 8 years. The times I went to recommended posh Newbury St salons I wore a pony tail for months after. Kelly was awesome! She understood my fine thinning shoulder length hair and how to cut without having it look straggly. She even did a good job with the blow dry and I NEVER like how others blow dry my hair. I was optimist when I booked my appointment with the owner of Bangs. Unfortunately, I was highly disappointed with the service and over all result. I was scheduled for a cut at 7:30pm and got a call 15 minutes before asking if I could come in early. I was already on my way, as I live in the neighborhood. Once I arrived the girls working were not very professional and seemed like they just couldn't wait to leave. The other stylist was actually obnoxious and talked very loudly the entire time and kept making sexual innuendos to her male client. She even started discussing their sales goals for the month and how many products each stylist had sold. My stylist was nice but didn't really listen to what I wanted. She asked me how I usually style my hair and I told her that I blow dry it and then quickly straighten the ends so they don't curl out. After the cut she styled my hair to make me look like Farrah Fawcett. Overall it wasn't the worst trim I've ever received, but I certainly won't be back. I wanted to like this place, really I did. I live in the neighborhood, the stylists were so welcoming and had a great energy, but I was so unhappy with my experience! I went in for highlights. I arrived on time and waited 40 minutes until I was able to sit with a stylist. When I finally sat down, I was one of three people getting my hair cut by the SAME PERSON. Three people at a time! My appointment was incredibly rushed, and I got the worst highlights I've ever had. They were an inch away from my scalp, thick and chunky, and not natural-looking at all. I think the problem was that the woman that did my hair wasn't paying attention, only trying to get as many customers through as possible. The hair cut was even worse. I asked for a trim, straight across, as simple as possible. I got 5 inches off, with jagged edges and she completely missed several chunks of hair. When I came home my roommate noticed my hair and trimmed the extra pieces that were missed. I was in and out (when I finally got into the chair) with a cut, color and blow dry in around an hour. Usually it takes at least 2.5. For a $150 haircut, this was incredibly disappointing. I won't be returning, and I'll make sure I save my friends from the same fate. read more

I went in to Bangs of Boston last friday for a cut and foil. Danielle was the absolute best! So friendly and knowledgeable. She helped me pick out colors that were not only beautiful, but very complimentary. I can't even begin to tell you how much I love my "new do". I feel like a whole new woman. I have received so many compliments in the last week. Everyone just loves it. The cut and the color are perfect for me. Danielle gave me everything I never knew I wanted. She was able to figure out exactly what I wanted when I wasnt even sure how to describe it myself. I have been wanting to come and leave a glowing review about my whole experience there- everyone was so nice!! I live close by and I just went for my 2nd time to Bangs of Boston. The first time I got a cut that I was really happy with. This past weekend I got a partial foil and I absolutely loved it. I am so happy with the color - it's exactly what I wanted. And if you're going to the hair salon of course you're going to want to get a great blowout and that's what I got as well. It was voluminous & lasted for days. Both my cut & color were with Kelly, who I believe is the owner. She is wonderful, friendly and has so much energy. I REALLY wanted to like this place. I love LOVE the location, but overall I just didn't like the atmosphere in there. Every time I was in there I just felt kinda rushed, and I felt like I didn't have my hair stylist the entire time. She'd start with me, and then have someone else finish. This could just be me too, but I felt like anything and everything that was said to me was what they say to everyone. I remember choosing a color, and as she's dying it she kept saying over and over and over AND OVER again about how much I'd love the color. Then oddly enough other hair stylists would come by and say the same thing...over and over again... (for the record I didn't pick anything that outrageous...it was a newer Burgundy kind of color that a lot of people were getting for the fall) It almost seemed like it was trying to over compensate in a way...? I don't know maybe it was just me...but if I'm going to sit in a chair for over an hour every 8 weeks or so, I want to be able to sit down, relax and be able to have a real conversation with someone. Not about how much THEY think how awesome my hair is going to look. Maybe it's just me though...if you're not into making friends at your hair salon, then by all means come here. If you're looking to enjoy yourself, I'd say there are other places out there that can provide you that. read more

I was hoping to love this place, but my experience wasn't what I had hoped. I had very long hair when I went in and asked for a 1/2 inch-1 inch trim... I am getting married in the next few months and wanted to keep my hair long. Phoebe was my stylist and had me stand up while she cut my hair. It was a little awkward but I went with it...when I told her I part my hair on the side, she insisted on cutting it with a middle part...second time I missed the chance to stop her. The whole time she was asking me if it took me a long time to dry/style my hair. I told her no. She kept asking and saying that I could really use a keratin treatment and that they were having a special... I told her I was not interested/am happy with my hair texture and drying time. Instead of trying to sell me I wish she focused on the service I paid for- a haircut. :-( She finished and did a nice blow out with the ends curled and I thought it looked very nice but much shorter than I asked for. The next day I washed my hair and blew it out straight... my hair was completely jagged and about 4 inches shorter than when I went in!! Long in the front, short in the back, uneven everywhere! I was/am so upset and disappointed. I am not a high maintenance person and have very easy hair to style/cut- I have never had a bad haircut and this was a nightmare. :-( I wish I had said something when I had a bad feeling instead of trusting I was in good hands. The reception folks were very nice and the salon is cute, but based on my experience and the noticeably bad haircut (seriously...I've been asked multiple times what happened to my hair/if I did it myself) I cannot recommend going here. read more

Meh. Nothing special. I brought a Groupon for a keratin and booked an appointment for the end of May. I was told the keratin lasts 5-6 months. Three months later and my hair feels gross in the humidity. Okay, so for the first few weeks or so, my hair was noticeably softer and wasn't frizzy. But now my hair doesn't feel as soft as it should. I had gotten a keratin previously at another salon, and the results lasted much longer. I even bought expensive shampoo and conditioner sold by the salon that was recommended for keratin-treated hair. I was careful for the first 72 hours and did not wet my hair or put it up in a ponytail. I probably wouldn't go back here for a keratin. It wasn't a horrible experience, but compared to the results of my first keratin, I just can't give this place anymore stars. read more
