So the day my daughter graduated from Dominican University was such a day full of pride and happiness-After four long years of studying for her BSN, she finally was graduating and we couldn't be more thrilled. Well after the long ceremony, it was time to grab some grub and celebrate properly with all that made the trip to San Rafael to see the ceremony. So I had reservations at a few spots in town that I thought were pretty good options to grab a bite afterwards but my daughter had other ideas. She told us after graduating all she wanted to do was just go grab a Banh Mi and a Vietnamese coffee at the spot her and her friends went to many many times over the past four years. Nostalgia I tell ya. Well after a small debate, I relented and we headed to Banh Mi & Coffee on Grand Avenue in San Rafael. Parking for this little shop is a nightmare as it's a very small shopping strip with just a few spots-some of us had to find street parking in this highly congested area. Once inside this very cozy shop, it's almost like stepping back in time. To call it a no-frills shop is quite the understatement. But for some reason, something told me this place was going to be great! We ended up going with a mix of different sandwiches-a few grilled porks and a few grilled chickens and a Vietnamese coffee Sandwiches ran around $7.00 each and the Vietnamese coffee ran around $5.50. There was a slight discount for paying in cash. The sandwiches got to us after a very short 10-12 minute wait and I so love when I'm right about a place. These Banh Mi sandwiches were legit-very tasty-very filling-meat cooked well, right amount of veggies-I've got to admit, even though I was hesitant, it truly hit the spot. I preferred the grilled pork over the grilled chicken, but others in the party preferred the chicken. The Vietnamese coffee was pretty perfect as well-truly took me to the moon and back with its mix of coffee strength and sweetness-I was going to be buzzing off that thing the entire ride back home to Sacramento. I truly can see why the students at Dominican University love and cherish this place so much. Even though it wasn't what I had in mind for a graduation meal, it ended up working out pretty well and at the end of the day all that really matters is sharing quality time and food with the people that matter & Banh Mi and Coffee definitely provided the quality food. I highly recommend this place if you're ever in the San Rafael area and feel like enjoying a high-quality, authentic Banh Mi. read more

I was looking for a caffeine kick, and behold I saw this when running errands. It is very low key and more of a grab and go place. Maybe a bench to sit and eat, but mainly take out. THIS PLACE IS A SLEEEEEPER. WOW, we randomly ate here because it was soooo close to our airbnb and their banhmi is AMAZING. The service was nothing short of phenomenal and it's a cute mom and pop shop. You should definitely give them a chance. We were in the area for 4 days and our party pretty much ordered everyday. While Banh Mi and Coffee was not the best I have had, I would say this is the best in San Rafael at a decent price. For years, I had passed by this banh mi shop knowing that I wanted to try it. However, downtown San Rafael is a bit of a hassle, and the parking here is a bit limited with the spots in front limited to customers and 20 minutes. The small diner does specialize in banh mi sandwiches which takes a French baguette slathered with butter and filled with some meat, herbs, peppers and pickled vegetables. However, there are definitely places that do it better than others. I ordered the grilled pork and the ham combination sandwich, and I had to say that these were higher tier. The bread was not too bready and toasted to give a nice crunch to each bite. The meats were well seasoned, and I especially enjoyed the meats in the ham combination. So the meat to bread ratio was good, but I did wish it had a bit more herbs to balance out the sandwich. In general, prices have gone up for everything so the cost was a bit higher than expected. However, considering how satisfied I was with one sandwich, I would say the price is reasonable. In terms of service, it was pretty quick. Only room for about limited number of people (max 5?) so do not plan to stay there to eat. As mentioned earlier, parking is limited as it is shared with other businesses. If none available, I would probably park at the nearby parking lot and walk over really quick. Overall, while the banh mi was not the best, I would still recommend it especially if you are in the San Rafael are looking for your banh mi fix. read more

Parking is pretty limited, so you might need to circle the block to find a spot. That said, this is hands down the best banh mi I've had since visiting Little Saigon in Westminister in SoCal. That's saying a lot, considering there's nothing else in Marin that comes close to this level of authenticity in Asian cuisine. Highly recommended! read more

Very good sandwiches! Fast service with a smile. I had two sandwiches: a fried tofu banh and traditional ham banh. The bread was lightly crunchy on the outside and the fillings were both very tasty, but the fried tofu was my favorite, by far. It was fried in small stringy bits that made it extra flavorful. My daughter and I both had the chicken banh mi sandwich. The meat and veggies were very tasty and it was served in the appropriate banh mi roll. I asked for the jalapenos on the side. The middle-aged man (owner?) who served us was very friendly and energetic. He recommended #2 or #5 (chicken or pork). I don't usually make a comment about price unless things are really expensive. In this case, it was a very reasonably priced sandwich - only $5.50. It's not a huge sandwich but it was the perfect size for me. I ate the whole thing. The food is 4 stars. Yesterday's New York Times featured a story on the collective mood of 2021. After everything that 2020 wrought, in 2021 we're not expected to be depressed nor to flourish. Rather, 2021 is the year of languishing. Even yelp seems to have gotten in on this mood. 5 stars no longer means "as good as it gets". Now it just means "great". 4 stars, previously "I'm a fan", is now just "good". So when I assign Banh Mi & Coffee a 3-star "ok" rating it feels like I'm shrugging my shoulders as if to say "yep, it was an adequate sandwich". And it was, an adequate sandwich. Banh Mi and I have a complicated history accounting for the reason I've not consumed one in several years. On this day, I came to Banh Mi & Coffee and opted for their BBQ Beef Banh Mi. No fiddling around with customization, the only question posed after I ordered was "Spicy?" to which I'd normally say "yes, always!" but it's 2021 so I just muttered "yes please". This was a very 2021 sandwich: Nothing about it depressed nor excited me. The beef wasn't particularly flavorful but it was amply supplied. The tangy vegetables, a hallmark of Banh Mi, were fine. The "spicy" comes from the addition of jalapeños which were appropriately hot on one half of the sandwich and insanely hot on the other half. You've been warned. Banh Mi & Coffee has a laughably huge menu including a bevy of attractive-sounding tropical juices and smoothie options and even a Hot Dog Banh Mi. Sandwiches are made to order and the prices are very reasonable. All in all, I'd say they make a perfectly fine - but not best in class - Banh Mi here. It's not a sandwich which would inspire in me a return visit but it's also true that not much does, in 2021. read more

Stopped by this little shop when we stopped for gas, on the way up to Portland. It is a small store with very limited seating, maybe enough for 2-3 people while you're waiting, I wouldn't say it's a dine in location. Their menu is simple and they have a few items to choose from. A few drinks as well. I got two sandwiches, I think a grilled pork and a grilled chicken. I also got a viet coffee. Everything was fine and I appreciate that there's a little Viet stop in, what feels a bit like, the middle of no where haha read more

Really good banh mi. I had the bbq pork and it was almost everything I expected... smoky flavorful pork, lots of pickled veggies and cilantro. The pork reminds me of meat you'd get in a gyro rather than a typical grilled pork. That's not a bad thing, though. Another review commented on the bread and they are right: this isn't the best. It's a decent sandwich roll but with the right crispy exterior and soft interior, this sandwich would be off the hook. They asked if a wanted it spicy and I said yes. The result was a banh mi no more spicy than at other places so I would recommend spicy if you're used to that. The Vietnamese iced coffee is rich and syrupy. Quite delicious. Not sure how busy they get at lunch time but I called ahead and my food was ready in about ten minutes, quick. Parking is limited. There is a small lot with about four spots. This place is so great! Hopped over while my daughter had an orthodontist appointment to grab a quick bite for lunch. The menu is tiny, and dishes uncomplicated, but if the rest of it is half as good as my pork sandwich, for what it is, you absolutely must go! The bread was the exact flavor and texture of the banh mi sandwich bread I ate in Vietnam. Pickled veggies are just a tad sweet for my preference, but still really delicious. This is a cute little hidden gem that has all kinds of sandwiches ranging from your usual breakfast sandwiches, to bahn mi's to PJ&j! They also offer a small selection of boba tea and coffee and some snacks, which is a nice treat. It's right next to ShareTea if you'd like to scale up on your boba selection. I ended up opting for the meatball bahn mi, which I've never tried anything like it and my husband got this huge sausage patty breakfast sandwich. Come check out this super chill hole-in-the-wall. I came here for a quick lunch and ordered their Chicken Banh Mi and Vietnamese Coffee. It was incredibly cheap which was a wonderful bonus on top of the deliciousness! The sandwich had fresh bread and the chicken was tender and flavorful. The coffee was tasty without being overly sweet. This place is better for takeout but you are able to have a seat at the two small tables inside. All in all, a great spot to have a delicious lunch for under ten dollars! Just keep in mind, that this place is cash only, so make sure you bring some.
