Grilled Pork Sandwich and Combination Ham Sandwich
    Patrick S.

While Banh Mi and Coffee was not the best I have had, I would say this is the best in San Rafael at a decent price. For years, I had passed by this banh mi shop knowing that I wanted to try it. However, downtown San Rafael is a bit of a hassle, and the parking here is a bit limited with the spots in front limited to customers and 20 minutes. The small diner does specialize in banh mi sandwiches which takes a French baguette slathered with butter and filled with some meat, herbs, peppers and pickled vegetables. However, there are definitely places that do it better than others. I ordered the grilled pork and the ham combination sandwich, and I had to say that these were higher tier. The bread was not too bready and toasted to give a nice crunch to each bite. The meats were well seasoned, and I especially enjoyed the meats in the ham combination. So the meat to bread ratio was good, but I did wish it had a bit more herbs to balance out the sandwich. In general, prices have gone up for everything so the cost was a bit higher than expected. However, considering how satisfied I was with one sandwich, I would say the price is reasonable. In terms of service, it was pretty quick. Only room for about limited number of people (max 5?) so do not plan to stay there to eat. As mentioned earlier, parking is limited as it is shared with other businesses. If none available, I would probably park at the nearby parking lot and walk over really quick. Overall, while the banh mi was not the best, I would still recommend it especially if you are in the San Rafael are looking for your banh mi fix.

    Thai Tea with Boba

A cute casual little shop in a small shopping center. I wanted to love it but it was just ok. Maybe I was there on an off day or time. Hopefully. I tried a vegetarian banh mi and a milk tea with boba. The banh mi was full of fresh veggies; it was flavorful and spicy which I appreciated. Sadly the bread didn't seem as fresh which was a bummer because I love bread. The tea was tasty: milky and sweet but not overly so. Overall I'd give it 3.5 stars. It hit the spot but didn't knock my socks off.

    Chicken banh mi

My daughter and I both had the chicken banh mi sandwich. The meat and veggies were very tasty and it was served in the appropriate banh mi roll. I asked for the jalapenos on the side. The middle-aged man (owner?) who served us was very friendly and energetic. He recommended #2 or #5 (chicken or pork). I don't usually make a comment about price unless things are really expensive. In this case, it was a very reasonably priced sandwich - only $5.50. It's not a huge sandwich but it was the perfect size for me. I ate the whole thing. The food is 4 stars. I've had better banh mi (in SF). The rest of my experience (service, price) bumped it up to 5 stars.

Yesterday's New York Times featured a story on the collective mood of 2021. After everything that 2020 wrought, in 2021 we're not expected to be depressed nor to flourish. Rather, 2021 is the year of languishing. Even yelp seems to have gotten in on this mood. 5 stars no longer means "as good as it gets". Now it just means "great". 4 stars, previously "I'm a fan", is now just "good". So when I assign Banh Mi & Coffee a 3-star "ok" rating it feels like I'm shrugging my shoulders as if to say "yep, it was an adequate sandwich". And it was, an adequate sandwich. Banh Mi and I have a complicated history accounting for the reason I've not consumed one in several years. On this day, I came to Banh Mi & Coffee and opted for their BBQ Beef Banh Mi. No fiddling around with customization, the only question posed after I ordered was "Spicy?" to which I'd normally say "yes, always!" but it's 2021 so I just muttered "yes please". This was a very 2021 sandwich: Nothing about it depressed nor excited me. The beef wasn't particularly flavorful but it was amply supplied. The tangy vegetables, a hallmark of Banh Mi, were fine. The "spicy" comes from the addition of jalapeños which were appropriately hot on one half of the sandwich and insanely hot on the other half. You've been warned. Banh Mi & Coffee has a laughably huge menu including a bevy of attractive-sounding tropical juices and smoothie options and even a Hot Dog Banh Mi. Sandwiches are made to order and the prices are very reasonable. All in all, I'd say they make a perfectly fine - but not best in class - Banh Mi here. It's not a sandwich which would inspire in me a return visit but it's also true that not much does, in 2021.

Good, solid Banh Mi at a fair price. Just a few tables if you want to stay; otherwise take away.

I opted for the vibrant red rose. It tasted exactly like a flavorless sponge drenched in l milk. Not even a hint of rose. Incredible, the white icing was equally flavorless, although it looked beautiful, with a sprinkling of dried rose petals. The overall effect was like eating a piece of cake that had fallen in a puddle of milk - with dried leaves in the icing. I had three bites and then told them guy behind the counter that it had no flavor and all he could offer was "I'm sorry". For $8 and no offer to make it right, it was a really bad experience and I would never go there again.

I ordered an iced mocha with oat milk during a busy time and waited about 20-30 minutes. While I was waiting, I noticed several customers who ordered after me received their drinks. I went up to the counter to ask about my order, and the cashier seemed confused. The barista remembered making my drink and believed someone may have accidentally taken it since there had been a drink sitting on the pickup counter for a while. The barista told me he would remake my drink and even offered the drink to another customer instead of discarding it. However, he continued making other orders before remaking mine. Just as I was about to ask for a refund, I finally received my coffee. I understand that mistakes happen, especially during busy periods, but better communication and order tracking would have made a big difference. Unfortunately, my first experience left a bad impression. As much as I liked the atmosphere, I won't be returning, and I can't recommend this coffee shop based on the service I received.

We bought the beans in the summer during a sale and recently started using them. My wife and I began noticing effects of caffeine from drinking it (jittery, anxious, over excited, insomnia, etc.) immediately. We both enjoy coffee but are sensitive to caffeine so look for the best decaf beans from specialty roasters. We've used decaf beans from various roasters (we had a Trade Coffee subscription that introduced us to other roasters) and haven't had these concerns. After drinking the Decaf Shakeout I once again tried a number of decaf beans from other roasters and local coffee shops just to make sure it wasn't me. Then when I went back to Decaf Shakeout I felt the caffeine effects again. At that point I reached out to customer service. They asked me send back a sample, which I did. Within hours of their receiving my sample they said the coffee director inspected them and said they are decaf. They wrote back, "So it sounds like the jittery feeling you experienced may have been from something other than caffeine in this case." That's after they said they don't have any way to test the caffeine levels--so the director looked at them? They said the coffee director "tried" them but the sample I received back looked about the same as the amount I sent. I doubt they brewed it, just assumed I was wrong. I felt dismissed despite my explaining the elaborate process I went through to isolate the experience I'd been having with their beans. I received no refund or any consideration of my concern--so I'm out $96. It's been bothering me so I decided to write a review. I won't buy Equator Coffee ever again because their decaf beans made me sick, and the customer service is robotic and not to be believed.
