Probably one of the very few mom 'n pop, cheap Asian comfort food, hole-in-the-wall restaurants left in the Duluth area. Banh Mi Cafe has everything that you could ask for and need from a Vietnamese cafe: pho, egg rolls, banh mi, smoothies, and more. Pho sizes come in small ($6.50), large, ($7.50) and xlarge ($8.50) with extra meat being $1-2 more. Banh mi's range from $3.25 to $4.00. They have a relatively small menu compared to other Vietnamese restaurants I've been to, however in my opinion that just means that believe in the few food items they have! Parking can be a bit of a slight challenge since Banh Mi Cafe sits on top of a hill (or the bottom of it depending on which way you're coming from) of a small plaza. There are a handful of places to park, but just make sure you're navigating carefully when you're in the plaza. My mom and I went on a Friday day to make a to go order. There were two ladies working that day and we were able to arrive and leave within 15 minutes tops. The only concerning thing I will say is I don't think I remember seeing the workers wearing masks, which is a bit questionable especially during times like these. Honestly the best banh mi place I've ever been to in duluth! Ive been to multiple banh mi places and this is just the best. I always get the b2 in the banh mi sandwich. ( banh mi + deliciously flavored BBQ pork) Without me even realizing I came here like twice a week for my lunch break. Was kind of addicted. The guy who works there .. I always come here for their Bahn Mi because they do have one of the best in the area. However, I was so disappointed in their pho. I had pho to go and when I got home and took out the broth, it was so murky and salty. There was no pho taste. I've eaten and made plenty of authentic pho in my life to know that they cut corners today and served me some powdered beef bouillon. We ordered a large pho and bbq pork banh mi from here. For around $15, it was a pretty good deal! The pho's soup was comforting and warm and the bbq was plentiful. Also probably the most meat I've had in a pho. Super tender and super fresh. The real star- however- was the baguette. Super warm on the inside and crunchy on the outside (but not too hard to be roof of the mouth shattering) with just enough mayo for it to be slightly savory. I came here on a weeknight and it was pretty empty. I was getting my order to go anyways so the atmosphere was not important to me. They have a deal where if you buy 5 sandwiches, you get 1 free. This is what I did and the sandwiches came out fast. I got the traditional meat sandwich. The bun was not warm, which was a great start. It had a good crunch to it. The veggies and pickled sides were good, but there was too much pate. This made the bun soggy quicker and was just too much ratio for me, overtaking the main flavor of the sandwich. As a Vietnamese person I've had a lot of different banh mi in my life and I must say the banh mi here was one of the best I've had. I had to immediately jump on Yelp and give them a well deserved good review. Tbh I don't think I've ever typed a review so fast in my life. I got the banh mi special (dac biet) and my boyfriend got the "thit nuong" and both were great. I liked the "dac biet" the most. It was so buttery and savory and the pate inside was amazing. I went there one morning after my dentist appointment, all I could have was soup based item. I ordered the bun rieu but I was told that the cook stepped away. I was not in the rush so I told the girl at the register that I was willing to wait. She was very friendly although she was busy picking up phone, seem like taking takeout orders. First off, the servers are fantastic. I've been here a few times and try something new every time. They are so cheerful and friendly. One server even remembers me 4 months later. Super quick and absurdly affordable.....I'd even go so far as to say dirt cheap. I usually treat my people at work to them because I can get like 11 or so for around $50. Today I came to eat here by myself for lunch and half the restaurant was also eating by themselves... so we were having lunch by ourselves ..together if that makes sense. And it was not awkward at all. That's the kind of place that this is. Also tried the Pho which had flavorful broth where you can taste the spice mix. They've been around for 7 years and a hidden gem. Forgot to mention, make sure to try one of the smoothies. Banh Mi Cafe opened late 2012 in a small strip mall on Satellite Blvd. just off of Pleasant Hill Rd. It occupies the corner space of the strip mall and isn't too hard to find. It's in between Enterprise Rent-A-Car and the strip mall with Korean hot pot restaurant Gom Shabu Shabu. This is a quiet, casual restaurant that serves more than just bahn mi (Vietnamese sandwiches). The restaurant actually has a well-rounded menu of various Vietnamese cuisine including cha gio and goi cuon (Vietnamese spring rolls), pho (noodle soup), bun (vermicelli noodle plates), com (rice plates), hu tieu (clear rice noodle soup), mi (egg noodle soups and plates), and Vietnamese drinks (e.g. coffee, pennywort drink) and smoothies. Unfortunately, I didn't see any che (pudding) on the menu. Everything is affordably priced. There are over a dozen varieties of banh mi, most at $3 per sandwich. Like other banh mi shops, the more you buy, the more you save. I forget exactly what the deal is, but it's one of those "buy X amount of sandwiches and get one free." Pho is priced at $7.25 for a large bowl and $6.00 for a medium bowl. There are over a half dozen types of pho and you can add additional meats to your pho at $1 per meat. That's an option you don't see at most pho restaurants. Other entrees cost about $7-8 each. I've tried both the bahn mi and pho and generally, they are okay. The one thing that stands out to me about them is they taste homemade. The banh mi isn't greasy and loaded with butter and the pho broth is less pronounced. My favorite type of dish to order at Vietnamese restaurants it the "dac biet" version of each dish. In this case, banh mi dac biet and pho dac biet. This loosely translates into banh mi and pho "with everything." Banh mis are made from French baguette bread and include meat(s), mayo, pate, shredded carrots and daikon radish, cilantro, sliced cucumber, and slices of jalapeno. I believe the meats in the dac biet ("special combination" on the menu) are all pork-based (e.g. steamed pork, roast pork, etc.). Compared to other banh mis I've had in Atlanta (and I've had a lot: http://www.yelp.com/list/cam-on-vietnamese-food-in-atlanta-doraville), Bahn Mi Cafe's version has one of the softest breads (win). It is also one of the more sloppily put-together banh mis I've encountered, though that isn't a complaint, just an observation. The banh mi veggies are sufficiently fresh and the ingredient proportions are good. The meats do taste a bit funny (old?) to me. It's a tasty sandwich otherwise. The pho dac biet comes with eye round steak, flank, tendon, brisket, and tripe. As mentioned previously, the broth is less pronounced. A lot of pho broth in Atlanta can be pretty strong, flavorful, and aromatic. Banh Mi Cafe's version is definitely on the milder side. I do like how their pho comes with plenty of scallions and onion slices. You don't get that at every pho restaurant. Pho sides include culantro, basil, bean sprouts, and lime. They don't give much culantro (but you can ask for more) and jalapeno is nowhere to be seen. Oh well, I'm sure you can ask for jalapeno too. The sides are adequately fresh. The pho noodles are a tad too soft (perhaps overcooked?) and, like the banh mi, the meat isn't the greatest quality, though I'm nitpicking. Still, it's not a bad bowl of pho. I do like the plethora of condiments at each table including the standard Vietnamese pho condiments of Sriracha and hoisin sauce. One thing Banh Mi Cafe has on its tables that not every pho restaurant has is the red chili paste. Not only that, but their red chili paste has an extra kick to it. I want to say it's infused with habanero. It's spicier than the typical red chili paste or sambal. If you like spicy food, try it. The restaurant is small, the decor is simple, and the atmosphere is laid back. The actually reminds me of a typical restaurant you'd find on the street in Southeast Asia. There is a TV playing Vietnamese programs. I think they could do a better job wiping down the tables (they've been sticky) and cleaning the condiment bottles (I've seen dried cilantro and peppers on them). The servers are nice and polite and the food comes out from the kitchen fast. The owner is American and you'll probably see him on your visit. He does a little bit of everything from taking orders, working in the kitchen, to ringing people up at the register. He occasionally tries to upsell menu items. Really good banh mi! It was a nice surprise because my expectations of banh mis are not very high in Duluth. We placed a takeout order around 10:30 am and the food was ready within 5 minutes. We ordered the combination and bbq pork banh mi and the shrimp and pork spring rolls. The bread was perfect - light, crispy and fresh. Although the name is BANH MI CAFE, they do serve other Vietnamese items. INTERIOR: Fairly medium-sized restaurant. Well-lit when I dined in around 10 p.m. Overall, clean tables and floors. Very warm vibe with the color of the wall and decor. FOOD: I came to try this place out with some cousins after have passing many times and hearing about it. It definitely did not disappoint. I made plans to eat here by the 4 star overall review before I scrolled down and realized the average score among my friends was between 2-3. Yikes. And while scrolling through the pictures, I wondered if I picked the wrong Viet restaurant for dinner. Parking in the nearly empty lot made me feel even more wary than I already felt. My friend told me she was almost there so I went ahead and ventured inside. There were maybe one or two other tables occupied, one of which sat the cute little owner (I recognized her from pictures on Yelp). The menu is limited, but offers all the basics, from pho to rice dishes, spring rolls to (of course) banh mi. I couldn't decide on a dish, as I was craving a rice dish, a vermicelli dish, pho or a banh mi. At the last moment, I decided on a medium (the smallest size) pho dac biet and a BBQ pork banh mi. I saw pictures of the tiny medium bowl of pho on Yelp but I felt that the size was sufficient for me. I had half of my banh mi and could barely finish my medium pho. With the appetite that I have, that's saying a lot. The pho wasn't bad - there was a pretty good proportion of noodles to meat. Once I mixed in my bean sprouts, jalapeño and sriracha, it was a little hard to taste the broth, but I enjoyed my pho. The larger variety of meat led to one of each kind of meat, which I suppose is standard for a smaller size portion of pho. I was so hungry I forgot to take a photo before I devoured my pho. My banh mi had a nice toasted crispy baguette and there was an average amount of meat. Butter dripped off the sandwich, which was a bit too much for me to handle but it was still delicious. The menu had more adventurous banh mi I could have tried but BBQ pork banh mi was my standard order among all banh mi shops. Overall, a cheaper option for dinner in Duluth that satisfied my Vietnamese pho craving. This is a great addition to the Pleasant Hill dining spectrum. The Vietnamese and American couple take great pride in their food and keep the prices where Vietnamese food should be, affordable. They have great Banh Mi here. For sure one of the best in Gwinnett. I always get the BBQ Pork, and it is phenom. Fresh bread, and fresh BBQ Pork and veggies. Really good. I have also tried the spring rolls and egg rolls and both are great. The egg rolls are the small bite size variety. This size is much more common in Vietnam and at the Viet/Chinese joint in Paris. I really like these crisp delights. Their entrees are nice as well. On my last visit I had the Shaken Beef which consisted of mildly marinated filet meat coupled with a very nice lightly-fried fried rice. Too often in American Chinese and Viet joints I find the fried rice too heavy and oily. Bahn Mi's fried rice was like what I am accustom to overseas, light and delicious. Great little hole in the wall type place with delicious food. I had one of my usuals, BBQ pork with broken rice (C4 on their menu) and I loved it. The meat was very well cooked. The rest of my table was also pleased with their vermicelli and pho orders. I also tried the Thai Tea flavor shake, and it was good. I wish they had durian, but the lady working there explained it was expensive so they don't always have it. This place is a true gem. The pho, noodle soup, and rice dishes are the best - flavor and value. The pho broth is the best around. It's also consistent. Can't say that about the competitors. My 4 year old son been it to all with me and he prefers this place. Come for the pho and try everything else. You can't go wrong. Like the spicy lemongrass chicken rice plate. Wow. They managed to make breast meat taste good to an Asian. Or if you're feeling adventurous, try the bun bo hue, spicy pork/beef noodle soup that is bolder in flavor than pho. I'd been craving authentic traditional Banh mi for several weeks. Last, week I was shopping in a different area than I live or work. I Googled and Yelped Vietnamese food in the area. Banh Mi Cafe had high ratings on both platforms and the photos on both platforms revealed a place that didn't look overly "commercial". I knew I was going out on a limb ordering at a new (to me) Vietnamese restaurant in the midst of a craving. It's almost like stacking the deck against the restaurant. But, that day logic was overwhelmed by the craving and I was willing to take the risk. First good sign - when I arrived, prior to dinner but well after lunch, there were a couple of families dining in, and someone getting take out. Second good sign- The atmosphere as depicted in the pictures felt very homey and service provided was pleasant and courteous. This place is definitely the best hidden gem of the Duluth area! Great prices that undercut the quality of the food you are served. I came walking over to this place as I was waiting on an oil change across the street from it. It's at the corner of super small little plaza and you can be forgiven if you miss it once or twice. The place is super small and when I came in I was the only one besides one of the employees taking a lunch break haha. I ordered a large bowl of beef pho for only $6! I was expecting a small amount of noodles and meat for that price but was pleasantly delighted to see my bowl come with at least twice the amount of each I was expecting. The broth was insanely good! With each sip I could taste all the beef flavors and herbs. The beef bowl came with brisket, beef balls, eye round steak, tendon, and flank tripe! The service here was also very great. The owner usually hangs around the restaurant and talks to customers when they go up to pay to hear their thoughts on the food. If you're in the area I urge you to give this place a try.
