We came here years ago when it first opened and quickly confirmed that the bahn mi was sub par. Bread was flat and fillings were tasteless. It's been maybe 4 years now and the bahn mi is now evolved into a return-worthy sandwich shop that rivals The Baguette house. The pork belly and the beef sandwiches were very savory. The Dat biet sandwich is also worth it. The bread is nice and crunchy with the right amount of texture. I didn't have the problem of scraping the inside of my mouth like Lees's sandwiches does. I'm only in Austin a couple times a year but as soon as I'm in my hotel room, I order from this place! It's the only place I've seen that has a beef tongue banh mi and it's delicious. The beef and pork banh mi's were good but for $9 a banh mi, expecting to have more meat. Also, I didnt see much mayonnaise and the pickled veggies could've been pickled more. The potstickers looked deep fried and not pan fried- interesting, but flavor was there. I am from houston so definitely have had better banh mi's but for austin, this place is decent (giving 4 stars as the bread tasted good and veggies were fresh). If there was 3.5 stars, i'd give that. We ordered a pork and beef banh mi with no modifications, and shared half of each. Both of us greatly preferred the beef banh mi (3.5/5) because it was more juicy and flavorful than the pork banh mi (2.5/5). The pork banh mi was dry. Overall, both banh mi were lacking in protein for the price. The bread was good but smaller than other banh mi I've had, especially at the price. I ordered one of their vermicelli dishes and my Mom had their basic Pho. I can only write about my dish. It came with bbq pork, shrimp and egg roll. It was delicious to me. The sauce that goes with it is also good. Also the staff people were nice. I'm trying to remember if you're supposed to pay first or pay after. The reason why I say this is because the woman behind the counter kept pointing to come to the front. The service was nice and the staff were friendly. I have to say the only thing I didn't like was the strong pine sol smell when they were wiping things down. When we first walked in, it was empty and they were wiping things down. Stopped in for lunch today because we found this place on Yelp on our way to Cedar Park. Nice restaurant, right off 183, friendly staff. Menu is not expansive but varied enough for most people. We zeroed in on the Bahn Mi sandwiches. I had the combo (with ham/pate, etc.) and also ordered a pork spring roll. The pork spring roll was really good, nice and plump and the pork was 'wrapped' around the veggies and the rice paper covered it all so you could see how much pork you were getting and it was a generous amount. Now for the main event. I loved everything about the Bahn Mi *except* the bread. I'm very picky about my Bahn Mi's and, although it *looked* like real french bread, it was not what I'm used to. First the insides... lots of stuff and appropriately portioned so that you get a little of everything with every bite. I love it when a restaurant pays attention to that type of detail, it really makes a difference to get that spectrum of flavors in one bite. Also, the meat/pate portions were generous, moreso than other Viet places, and the right amount of jalapenos as to not be overly heated. So, the bread. It looked like French bread but when I eat my French bread *anything* I expect to have a mess of crumbs when I'm done. No crumbs here so if they're calling it French Bread, I'd suggest they change their recipe to make it crumbly on the outside and soft on the inside like many other Vietnamese places do. So we bump you for 1 star on that important part. I'd definitely come back, if I'm way north again, as there are other menu items that look very worthy of trying. Lastly the prices for the sandwiches are very fair. In fact, we felt like almost all of their menu items were not Austin prices yet so I hope they don't get greedy like some other Viet places and unnecessarily start charging big city prices! read more

This small Vietnamese restaurant being right next to H-mart is easily missed due to it being in the shadow of a giant but the food here is very good. Authentic flavors and lots of flavor. The interior is small so don't expect to dine in with more than 4 people but their banh mi is great as a take out. There was a jalapeño in there which did catch me by surprise (it was at the ends of the sub). The pork had a really nice subtle sweet marinate which went really well with the cucumbers and carrots! We wanted to try somewhere new and wandered over to Banh Mi Galang. When we stepped in, the general ambiance was not very presentable. It looked like we walked into someone's house instead of a restaurant. There was a random folding table that looked like it was for personal use. We ordered spring rolls and banh mis. While the spring rolls came out within 5 min, the sandwiches took nearly 20 min. The banh mis ($8.50 each) weren't good and also very small for the price paid. Although tasty, the spring rolls were $3 each and we wouldn't pay that much had we known how many rolls we were going to get. In total we paid $23 + tax for 2 spring rolls and 2 banh mis, lol. Baguette House, near MT Supermarket, offers more for less, with larger portion sizes. We'll avoid Banh Mi Galang in the future. read more

Good choice for Vietnamese food in far North Austin. My go to order there and at most Vietnames restaurants is the pork vermicelli bowl. Their pork is very flavorful and I like that they have recently started adding crispy onions but the quality and quantity of their veggies is lower than other places I prefer. My husband recently tried the pork banh mi and raved about it noting the bread was very fresh and there was just the right balance of meat, veggies, and bread. The restaurant itself doesn't offer much in terms of atmosphere. The restaurant is overall clean but you can see where crumbs and such have gathered in the cushions of the booths. The drinks are in cans or bottles and kept in a cooler for you to grab yourself with their excess drinks stacked in the corner between the counter and the dining area. A little more care in the layout and cleaning would help improve the atmosphere. The staff there have always been kind and attentive. I've had a ton of banh mi my entire life and considering I'm Vietnamese, it's my country cultural sandwich. Another great banh mi restaurant to open and I ordered just 1 banh mi special with added pate. I believe pate cost extra, over all it's an excellent sandwich, it's very very good, one of the best in Austin but it's the price point that I can't get over. For under $9.50 it's the most expensive banh mi sandwich I've had especially compared to California where I'm from and Houston/Austin. Banh mi sandwiches are less than $9.50 in those areas and comes packed with more meat. In my opinion, it's the most expensive in Austin but it's also one of the best tasting. Love the bread. It's soft crunch and amazing. The fresh bread had to be baked in house, that's a plus and the pickled greens are great with a nice thang plus crunch from the carrots. Over all great experience but me personally, it's lacking in a few key areas. -missing daikon -missing sliced jalapeños -pate cost extra $1-$1.50 (where other restaurants it's free and comes with it automatically) -not enough layers of meat (I added my own egg at home and extra mayo) If the sandwich had more meat, it could justify the price point but Jimmy Johns, thunder cloud, Jersey mikes all are priced under $9.50 and come with more meat. Stopped by the HMart and instead of eating inside, I went around the corner to this little restaurant Banh Mi Galang. So glad I did. The interior is simple and clean. The kitchen is viewable from the dining area which I like. Here's what I had: Shrimp Banh Mi sandwich- This is one of the best Banh Mi I've ever had. Why? The bread is so deliciously toasted. TLDR: One of the best little Vietnamese restaurants along the 183 corridor, a real hidden gem. Banh Mi Galang (BMG for short) is tucked around the corner of the same building as the Hmart at Lakeline and Lake Creek Pkwy. Because of this, parking's free and abundant. Ordered the Vietnamese-style Pork and Shrimp Egg Rolls, the Spring Rolls, and a Bánh Mì Ðặc Biệt - Combo Sandwich. Some of the best egg rolls I've had, bursting with meat and little chunks of shrimp. Similarly, excellent spring rolls! These aren't fried - they're pork and shrimp wrapped in rice paper with fresh herbs, vegetables, and rice vermicelli. The herbs include a bit of fresh mint, which really livens up the dish. Finally, the combo sandwich is one of the best cold Vietnamese sandwiches I've had. Ham, char siu pork, and best of all pate. As one reviewer noted, pate can be left off of cold banh mi at some places, but BMG doesn't skimp and gives you the real deal. Throw in a basic but nice set of 4-5 booths to eat at and great service, and you have one of my favorite Vietnamese places on the West side of town! This was our 2nd time eating at Banh Mi Galang,and I think this may become our go to Sunday lunch. Let me say - they have bone marrow!! This is a rare find for a Vietnamese restaurant in the Austin area. It takes the usually light pho to an unctuous and decadent new level. - The combo pho was very flavorful and you can tell the broth was made by someone who knows what they're doing. The meats were all well executed as well. - The grilled vermicelli bowl with beef was wonderful. It had lemongrass flavor laced throughout and was a special dish. Unique and I would definitely get it again. - The grilled pork banh mi consistently good. It's my favorite one in the Austin area. The only thing that could make it better is if they added more butter/spread on the bread. - The spring rolls are the best I've had. They're worth their price. Best bun bowl I've ever had. I grew up in southwest Houston and have probably had 100+ bun bowls and this was my favorite due to all the little extra touches of added flavor. I'm usually a grilled pork guy but I also had a grilled pork banh mi to split with my wife so we ordered the beef for the bun bowl. Lots of places do "lemongrass beef" but this really had great fresh lemongrass flavor along with some fried onions and garlic along with perfect noodles, pickled veggies, mint, peanuts, and fish sauce. Their egg rolls were great - typical Vietnamese style, as were the spring rolls, which also had some mint in there and a nice sauce (more peanuty and not overwhelmingly hoisin like some places). Their banh mi was also good - bread is the right combo of crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. I would probably order this regularly if I hadn't discovered the bun bowl. My kids loved the pho, very rich flavor, and you can add bone marrow, which not all places will provide. Enjoyed the Thai tea also. The phone experience calling it in and the quality of the takeout packaging was great also. I can certainly see this being a new Vietnamese favorite whenever we are in the area. read more

Review is for takeout! Have to admit these guys delivered a solid product, with just minor issues. Ordered 2 banh mi, grilled pork and the shrimp as well as some spring rolls. Flavor is delicious, especially liked the shrimp one. The bread, which is a huge part tasted fresh and had an awesome crust on it. Even after transport it held up awesome. One thing I appreciated is that they don't put pate on the sandwiches by default but ask if you want it. I think pate is delicious but if you're looking for a leaner option or it's not your thing it's nice they think about your preferences. Only complaint if I had any was that the shrimp banh mi was pretty light on shrimp. For the entire sandwich there were probably only 6-7, which felt a bit skimpy. Been to other places that are a little more generous considering the cost. A fluke maybe? Either way these are some of the best banh mi in far north austin (lakeline area).
