    Cobra fries
    Ana M.

Visited the brick and mortar location off of Wrightsville Ave and it's was such a great vibe! The staff were kind and helpful with the menu and you can tell the food is made fresh. I hope they expand their menu to match some items to the food truck, but worth the visit for sure.

Tried this new food truck at Flying Machine. They seemed organized-They had one person standing in front of the food truck collecting orders and payments. After you submit your order, you wait for your name to be called when your food is ready. This is an Asian fusion style food truck owned by non-Asians, if you care. They posted their menu beforehand 5 days before their event on their Instagram @banh_sai but changed their menu 2x last minute. They were only accepting credit card during my visit. I tried the cobra fries ($6), banh mi with pork meatballs ($7-9) and ramen noodle soup ($10-$13). I was underwhelmed by the Cobra fries. Recommend to skip it. They were thinly cut fries drizzled with hoisin sauce, their sweet banh mi aioli sauce, Sriracha, and topped with thinly sliced scallions, diced spicy red pepper, and Japanese togarashi seasoning. I didn't like the combination of all the flavors. Maybe it would have tasted better if there was more of the aioli sauce. One positive thing about the fries were that the fries were crispy. The ramen noodle soup was decent. It definitely hit the spot in the cold high 30° weather that night. The hot soup was served in a plastic container and had sliced shiitake mushrooms, al dente white mushrooms, chopped scallions, chopped bok choy, and white onion over packaged instant ramen noodles in a savory broth. You can add a soft-boiled egg or pork meatballs for an additional cost. I didn't ask for either one, but they added the egg and meatballs to my soup. The soft boiled egg wasn't marinated as typical ramen eggs so it didn't have any flavor. The pork meatballs had good flavor- soy sauce based seasoning. I would have preferred fresh ramen noodles over instant. The banh mi sandwich was the best meal out of the three I tried. Options are either pork meatball, fried chicken or cauliflower. Chose the pork meatball, which came in three pieces with thinly sliced quick-pickled cucumbers, pickled carrots and daikon, jalapeno slices, cilantro, and their aioli sauce on a buttered toasted ~6-in roll. The sandwich tasted good, but would have tasted better if it wasn't so burnt on the inside. I mean really? embarrassing that they still served the roll with half of one side burnt. I would give the banh mi sandwich another try. And if there was another cold night, I would go for the soup again to warm me up.

    Sweet heat wings

Hard to say this because there are so many great food trucks in Wilmington but I think Banh Sai is our favorite! We especially love wing Wednesday! Each week it's a dozen wings ($16) with a different sauce. This week the wings were made with their sweet heat sauce and served with a side of ranch. They were incredible! They were spicy but the sweetness cut through. Messy but delicious and great to share. We also split the cobra fries. It's a staple on their menu and a big portion. I want to mention that they have great customer service. When my boyfriend went to grab the container it opened and the toppings and a couple of the fries fell out. They were so quick to tell us they'd make a new batch or top off what we had. We told them multiple times it was ok and not their fault. There was still so much. Next time you see banh sai pull up to one of the local breweries be sure to order some food! It won't disappoint!

Legend has it that this truck served the Dalai Lama's birthday dinner so, being of royal blood myself, felt it was worthy of my tempestuous palate. I quickly discovered I was slightly over-dressed in my Tom Ford Sharkskin suit and ostrich leather boots, just jeans and a sweat shirt seemed to be much more appropriate attire. But I digress... The first dish I ordered was the Cobra fries. I'm fairly certain these are NOT, in fact, fried bits of Cobra. We feasted on the satanic cobra which persecuted my family for generations after we were finally able to deliver a crane kick to its evil dome. These Cobra fries were much more enjoyable. With each bite my hardened exterior persona softened. By the end of the dish I was left with tears of passion streaming from each eye. I quickly collected myself, because this meal wasn't over. Next, the Banh Mi. An absolute masterpiece. With the pork meatball, this was balanced to perfection. Repressed memories from my childhood raced back to consciousness with each hint of pickled carrot. The jalapeño chiming in with its sweet, subtle heat to let me know that it will only get better. All held together with a sticky sauce like the arms of family and friends embracing you in a hug. I was filled with clarity, love, missed life-lessons, and mostly importantly, an intoxicating sandwich. A true out-of-body experience. A real-life floating SpongeBob meme. As much as I wanted, nay, NEEDED more, I had to direct my attention to locating the nearest shaman to help return my soul back to my mortal being. Still trying to find one, actually, so if you know a guy, please contact me.
