This place has been on my bucket list for a while. They are known for their delicious burgers and I was not disappointed. I ordered the Station Wagon burger with sautéed mushrooms, onions, Swiss cheese and garlic aioli and the garlic fries. I also ordered a beer and I dined at the bar. The burger was cooked perfectly and the bun was soft and fresh. The fries were outstanding! Perfect cook and seasonings. The wait staff were very friendly and the ambiance is cozy. I came on the tail end of the "lunch rush" and saw most tables occupied. My mom and I were seated promptly, thankfully, and my server was prompt. She was happy to hear about how we found Winnie's and that we are looking forward to trying their signature burgers. I ordered a miniature Carolina Burger and my mother ordered a full-size Station Wagon Burger. The Station Wagon is Winnie's take on a Mushroom Swiss. My burger has chili and slaw between the patty. Both our patties are thick and juicy. The cajun fries have a kick to them and are worth trying out. We saved half our burgers to take home along with a take-out order of two more burgers. Very small restaurant with great burgers. You have the fantastic option of ordering a "mini" 4 oz. burger of a regular 8oz. burger. I got the Carolina Burger, medium rare. The burger was cooked properly and tasted great. The side of house made chip were delicious. My wife got a perfectly cooked mini cheeseburger. First time at this beloved burger spot, and I can see why people love it. I got a classic cheeseburger and fries to-go. I stepped inside to place my order-- very cozy little restaurant. It was buzzing on a mid-weekday lunch hour! The server brought my food to my car. The burger was huge and delicious-- nice thick patty on a big, soft bun. French fries were fine-- a standard fry. Heard about Winnie's Tavern from the moment I arrived in Wilmington. Best burger ... long history ... great spot ... blah, blah, blah. Took my wife, two of my sons, and my one year old grandson. We sat outside and got our server fairly quickly and ordered a few drinks. We also in an effort to speed things up gave our server our food order. Didn't work! Slow service, food was average at best, and expensive! Can't see how people rate this place so high ... will try Copper Penny next. Winnie's proclaims themselves as being the best burger in Wilmington so I had to give them a try. They are a small tavern with some BIG burgers. I got a basic Bacon Cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles. It was a little pricey at $16.50 but it was a half pound patty. Overall it was a pretty good burger, it was seasoned well, juicy and didn't completely fall apart. The star of the show was their Cajun seasoned fries which were my favorite part of the meal, they were crispy, well seasoned and just a great fry. I've only ever tried the trailer park burger, since that's the most interesting burger on their menu. They were doing a discount on the trailer park burger for $12.95 during burger week. The original price is $18.50, which is insanely overpriced, and I would not pay that much for this burger. Yes, the trailer park burger is good, but not the best. The meat is a little dry and the bun basically falls apart when trying to hold the burger together while eating it. The burger holds better when it's cut in half. Depending on your appetite, the trailer park burger is enough for one person. The sweet potato fries, as one of the options for the burger, are greasy and not that crispy. I could get better sweet potato fries at the hospital. The front staff are not very friendly. You won't be able to be seated until your whole party is present, which is understandable. But it is a little silly to do that when you're waiting for one more person, the restaurant just opened and there are plenty of free tables. read more

No matter which burger you choose, you can't go wrong. I've had a few of the specialty burgers and sandwiches and have loved them. Recently, I chose the classic Winnie cheeseburger and it was flavorful and juicy with fresh lettuce, tomato and onion. I also love their french fries and crispy onion rings with a variety of sauces. The service is fantastic and three waitresses took turns on my recent visit. The setting definitely gives a tavern feel and it's often filled with happy people. Our party called ahead per their recommendation at a previous visit if we were coming with a larger party. Having to wait is understandable as they don't take reservations and completely understand first come, first serve. However, it seemed as if their communication between staff members was lacking when it came to "calling ahead" and what the actual process is supposed to be. It's not so much as having to wait or the communication, it was the rude customer service. Customer service goes a long way in my opinion. I love Wilmington and visit often as my son graduated from UNCW. We recently went down from NJ for a long weekend and stayed at a wonderful AIRBNB next door to Winnie's. We arrived late and after a long drive we were starving and tired so we decided to go right next door. Well, we loved the staff, food and drinks so much we went dined there 3 out of the 4 nights we were in town and ordered out for lunch twice. We had the burgers which were perfectly cooked the first night and sat at the bar. Our drinks were delicious. The other nights we sat at a table with a larger party. I had the chicken and waffles, my son had the fish and chips. We continued with burgers the other night. Everything was amazing. Mouth watering dishes! I wish I was there longer to try all of their food. It is in an odd little location, but well worth going there. My family and I have eaten our way through Wilmington over the years and Winnie's Tavern is definitely one of our top 3 places to eat! Could possibly be #1. Give them a try. I consider myself a burger connoisseur! So, of course I tried the burger! It was good! I got the regular cheeseburger. I would like to try another one (with different toppings) next time. :) Oh- and I love that they have bread and butter pickles! They only come on certain burgers, so I asked for them specifically (because they also have dill pickles, which came standard with my husband's hamburger). The garlic fries were very yummy! The fries have their skins, which I love, and they are cooked to perfection! They even lasted the test of the 10 minutes between pick up and getting home to eat. :) The slaw was also good, it's mayonnaise based but not overly so.
