If you like authentic Thai food, you will love this restaurant.My wife is Thai and we have savored her native cuisine worldwide-from Bangkok to London, as well as every Thai restaurant we can find in Wichita. The food at Bann Thai is delicious and authentic, and only because my wife speaks Thai I know that each dish at Bann Thai is carefully prepared from scratch. The owner "Tui" even makes her own curry pastes. I just took one of my partners out to dinner last night, and he was wowed by the food. Specifically the Choo Chee Pla and Pad Prik Pla are specialties of the owner-and both are not to be missed. Both dishes have lightly fried fish cutlets prepared with spicy and aromatic sauces. Choo Chee has a coconut milk base, the pad Prik has a basil and chili sauce - distinctly different but equally delicious. Also of note Tui serves Pad khee Mao (drunken noodle) without noodles if desired, for a low carb tasty version of this famous dish. It's listed in the stir fry section of the menu. The last thing I would like to mention is that the "thom yum goong" spicy lemongrass soup with shrimp and chicken is amazing. This is the soup that defines Thai cuisine, and it's often pictured in ads with singha beer. Try the "hot pot," for about $12 it has enough soup for several people to enjoy. Please be aware that if you find large inedible chunks of lemongrass floating in your soup, this is a good thing! Take one in your mouth with a spoonful of broth and gently chew it to work some of the lemongrass essence out- you won't be disappointed. It's there for you to enjoy like on the streets of Bangkok but don't try to swallow it- like bones in a soup its for flavor only. One more thing, be suspicious of any review that rates "Crab Rangoon" critically. This isn't even an authentic Thai food at all i.e. you won't find it in Thailand. It's a completely Americanized crunchy fried appetizer made with cream cheese (often with no crab in it) that nearly all thai restaurants are forced to serve because people who mistakenly think it's Thai food expect it. This is not the Ritz Carlton, but if you want some great Thai food at a reasonable price-give it a try. My wife and I routinely drive completely across town to enjoy the food at Bann Thai. There must have been some changes made since these reviews were written because my experience here has been very different from what some of these diners have experienced. I have been eating here 3 times a week for a few months now and haven't encountered anything resembling rudeness, lack of cleanliness or wrong orders. The food has been consistently delicious and both the owner and the staff have been friendly and helpful to me each and every time. Perhaps these other reviewers are expecting staff to fawn over them when they enter an establishment. It's just not realistic to expect 4 star service from a strip mall eatery. Thai people are very friendly so I just don't get what these people are doing to bring out this behavior, which is very unnatural for Thais. If you like yellow curry then you must try this place. No other place in town can top them. Period. I have had all their curries and the one thing that this place gets right is their spicing. Its the same every time I go. A medium is never too hot and for me that is critical as I can't eat it if its too hot. I've gone elsewhere, ordered mild and have had to give my dish to my Thai wife because the it was way too hot for me to enjoy. Not here at Bann Thai though! They tell you ahead of time that their hot is not like other places. You've been warned. You should really try this place and see for yourself how good the food is. Just go there understanding that it is in a strip mall and you're not going to get the upscale service that you should expect from a larger restaurant! The staff are all friendly and if you make an effort to smile you will be met with a smile. I know that I will continue to go there several times a week for my lunches knowing that I will get filled up with the perfect portion for my appetite at the right spiciness. Worst Thai restaurant in Wichita. Way over priced and no taste at all. I walked in there a half hour before they stopped serving lunch and the owner got pissed off. The owner is a very hateful lady. I am not Indian but she flat out told me she hates Indians. My buddy had gone there and tried to use a coupon and that pissed her off. Her attitude completely changed when she saw the coupon. If she don't want people to use coupons she shouldn't have them in the first place. I will never go here ever again. read more

I knew this restaurant has changed owner, that's why I came to try their food. I have to say... i'm so dissapointed at their service (my server was putting her shoes on and did not wash her hands after that) and food. Nothing special, food tasted just ok. I would like to note that I made an account just so that I could rave about this amazing restaurant. It has been on my mind to do this for months, but now I am doing it! :) Bann Thai is an amazing restaurant and is my favorite place to eat. The ambiance is quaint with elements of Thailand throughout the store, and the best feature of the restaurant is the owner. She is very friendly and makes delicious recommendations. The food here has ruined me for 99% of other restaurants in the area that I used to eat at. My standards for flavor and spice have risen, and I cannot settle for anything else. Bann Thai is so traditional and homey. The food exudes love and care. Since they opened in May, my husband and I try to go once a week, or at least once every two weeks. Between the two of us, we have had quite a bit of the menu. The pad thai is so flavorful with a spiciness that is cooled by the peanut sauce, and a crunch from bean sprouts to contrast the rice noodles - it is divine!! I really do not know what one of the reviews had a problem the food. Yes the shells are on, but many traditional dishes do that. And that is what I love about Bann Thai. My personal favorites are the green and yellow curries. The depth of flavor present in the sauces blows my mind away. I have tried many of the Thai places in Wichita, and I have never had a curry taste this good. I always love to try something different, and I am NEVER disappointed. The spicy basil, papaya salad, BBQ pork, and on and on are all so delicious. I am not sure what the sauce is with the BBQ pork, but my husband and I go crazy over it; it is so spicy and warm. The coconut mango rice dessert is so delectable that even my husband, who is not the biggest fan of rice, devours this dish, and I have to fight for my fair share. :) I highly recommend Bann Thai to everyone who enjoys authentic Thai cuisine! Though a word of caution to those who are not used to intense Asian spices: start out with mild or medium spiciness. The chilies used in Thai cuisine can be overwhelming to many people (myself including depending upon the dish!). If mild even proves too powerful, I would recommend a curry. I purchased groupon deal for 4 at Bann Thai that runs a while ago but our friend couldn't make it; therefore only 3 of us went to the restaurant. When we arrived at the restaurant, it was basically empty and no customer around at all. The server approaches us and ask whether we did make any reservation; you have to make reservation in order to use the Groupon. I don't see why reservations is necessary when there's not even a single customer inside the restaurant. Then, the server said that we cannot use the Groupon because we only have 3 people and not 4. I don't understand why not. So, the server called out the owner. She was basically yelling at us that we can't use the Groupon because we don't have 4 people and there's nothing she can do. When I tried to explain to her the rules wasn't stated in the Groupon deal, she refused to listen and walked away back to the kitchen. The restaurant owner was incredibly the rudest person ever. I never encountered any restaurant owner that treated customers like crap. This is the worst restaurant that I ever step my foot into. Let me begin by saying I love Thai cuisine. And I am quite the chili head, having enjoyed super hot food across the globe and back again. But these folks have taken it way too far. I understand that Thai designations of heat levels are on another scale than the average American is used to or even aware of. But even by all other standards in this or any other area, Bann Thai overshoots the mark by a factor of 10, no exaggeration. We ordered a dish "medium", expecting a really spicy dish. It is Thai food, after all. What we got was pure pain. Misery, people. Searing pain. My friends who ordered "mild" could not finish their meal. The non-spicy dish we ordered, Honey Duck, was the lowest quality bird I've ever had. Nothing but sinew and bone, and gamey the way only old, barnyardy recussitated frozen duck can be. Completely inedible. I feel badly for the owners, because they are really trying to make a go of it, but even the tea was lukewarm when it arrived at our table. I only hope they get out of the restaurant business soon, before they lose everything. I hate to write such a scathing review, but this case was so egregious, I just couldn't stay silent.
