I read about this place in the paper and it mentioned their reputation for having some of the spiciest Thai food in Wichita. I absolutely LOVE spicy food, especially spicy Thai food, so I made it a point to check this place out this week. I stopped in around 1:30 & placed a to- go order. I saw a sign in the window that said something about only placing to go orders after 1:30, (it was weirdly worded- like only place to-gos between 1:30 - 1:45? I didn't pay much attention to it since it was after 1:30. This may have been in reference to their lunch specials. ??) They had their lunch specials handwritten on a white board & had another board hanging on the wall that explained their heat levels; which range from mild with 1/4 tsp to Thai Hot with 3 TABLESPOONS of chili paste or whatever they use to spice their dishes. The guy who took my order was super helpful & really nice and explained they recommend people new to the restaurant only order dishes at a medium or less, since their hot is super hot compared to other places. I ordered from the lunch specials & got their Thai Broccoli & Crispy Pork -Thai Hot ($9.95), Spicy Basil Beef from their lunch menu for my husband- medium, & Mango w/Sweet Sticky Rice to cool my mouth off afterwards($5.95). I've been hearing about how spicy this place is for a while & after reading some of their Yelp! reviews, I figured I might as well go all in. The lady (who might have been the owner) asked me twice if I was sure I wanted to order it that spicy. Even coming back from the kitchen a 2nd time to ensure I understood how spicy Thai hot would be. (It's written on a white board there are no refunds after you order. Which seems like common sense to me, but okay) I assured her that I understood the food would be extremely spicy and that's what I wanted. I could smell the spiciness from the door, wheweee! Poor thang cooking the order was coughing up a storm & I felt bad, cooking spicy food can be hell when you're standing over the stove breathing in those fumes. The employees were courteous and it took about 10 min or so to cook our orders fresh. Food was excellent! It was cooked perfectly and even though my food was spicy it still had really good flavor to it. I really enjoyed my dish and my husband's was tasty too. He thought even the medium had a little spice to it which he liked. The pork was a little fatty, but it's pork. In the future I'd rather order another form of protein be it: Beef, or chicken, or even fish. They had several fish options which I was glad to see. I was disappointed you don't get the egg roll that comes with the lunch specials on to-gos I understand not doing soups or even salads on Togo orders, but no egg rolls, Sad! That's okay though. Our food was great and I love having a place I can now go when I'm craving spicy food, that's actually spicy. My love for spicy food means my gauge on how spicy food is, is much different from most people. Typically people say something is super hot and to me, it's not. Tried this place again for the first time at the 13th & West location. Ordering by phone was a little awkward, as the owner curiously asked me if I had eaten at that location before. She explained in person that people tend to order hotter than they can handle and then complain and want refunds. I imagine that gets old. I ordered the seafood combination fried rice, medium. I love spicy food, and trust me, medium was plenty hot. Tasted great, very fresh, and all of the seafood was delicious. Mussels can get a little funky, but these were spot on. My suggestions for improvement would be to add cashews, and definitely some thai basil. I was the only customer in there at 11:25, so we need to send some business her way! read more

Bann Thai offers over the phone ordering, But the few times I have tried ordering over the phone I was unsuccessful, I ended up going to the restaurant to place a order and asked them about ordering over the phone and they responded "oh we left the phone at home". I did get through for a phone order one time and the waitress taking the order seemed annoyed that she was taking my order, now I know places can get buys but you do not have to be rude to me taking a order that pays for your job. The last time I went I ordered Sukiyaki:Stir-fried clear noodles with shrimp, calamari, chicken, egg, onions, and cabbage, in red tofu sauce. It did not have any shrimp. I also ordered Mixed Fried Rice:Fried white rice with egg, vegetables, chicken, beef, and shrimp. No chicken and no shrimp. When I paid for the meals I asked if the receipt was in the bag...she looked at me quizzically and said no....with a bit of a pause I said " may I have one? she just turned around and went into the back and then came back, she wrote down what I had ordered and then left ( I am sorry to inconvenienced you for a receipt for my order ). Needless to say I took my incomplete meal back to explain that I did not receive any chicken or shrimp and was met the cook who immediately got defensive and without even looking at my meal that I had returned said I ate over half of it and she was not going to offer me a refund..so from the time I got to Bann Thai and explaining what happen to the time I met the cook I said "look I did even ask for a refund I just wanted to let you know that I did not get any chicken or shrimp" She was not having any of it and just argued with me about the meal. I have never met anyone with such contempt about a meal in the restaurant business that they would not ever consider that they might have been in the wrong. This is the only time I have met with such negativity in a restaurant setting. I would not recommend this place to anyone! there are better places to eat in Wichita. read more

The absolute best, flavorful Thai food! They are very straight forward in warning and educating their customers about the "heat" in seasonings that can be added to your meal. Each dish is fresh made by the cook who goes home to her homeland every year and brings back the "real" spices and seasonings, making the food really authentic. (American spices and seasonings are not the same!). The place is not fancy, but very comfortable and clean. Highly recommended! read more

I recently was in Wichita and had to take the opportunity to enjoy Thai cuisine. I was disappointed. I ordered the Pad Thai Shrimp dish. It was delicious. And quite spicy. I ordered medium and the owner gave me fair warning that her levels of spice are greater than the typical Thai restaurant. You could tell that the ingredients were fresh. I don't know anything about Thai food aside from its one famous dish, so I'm going to throw myself into it and try as many Thai places as I can to hopefully come out the other side with some education. It may be hidden around the corner in the strip mall that houses Da Cajun Shack, but Bann Thai has its fair share of regulars. Combine this with online ordering and wait times can start becoming an issue depending on how many people are working that day. I was the only person in the place when I came in early Sunday lunchtime, but by the time I left, the four tables plus the takeout orders were becoming a challenge for the one guy working the front of the house. When I did come in, the lady was nice enough to walk me through some possible menu options. I ended up trusting her completely, beginning with the Tom Yum, a popular Thai hot and sour soup that most frequently contains goong (shrimp) or gai (chicken). I got the gai. The fragrant, sour, and hot soup was a full assault on the senses, and the hefty chunks of mushroom and chicken were almost a meal unto itself. I wasn't jazzed that they served me some of the aromatics, particularly when I ended up with a big chunk of tough lemongrass in my mouth. Pad prig (or pad prik, as the Internet tells me is more common) is a simple mixture of red curry paste, peppers, chiles, crunchy long beans, and - in this case - pork. It follows the simple meat-vegetables-sauce formula that you'll find in a lot of Asian restaurants, though points again go to the aroma of the dish. There was a little sugar in there too that brought some complexity to the table. I can handle a lot of heat in my dishes, but Thai food is the only type of cooking that I regularly have to proceed with caution. Bann offers mild, medium, hot, and "Thai hot" levels of heat. Having firsthand knowledge that "Thai hot" means I'm in for a bad day, I bumped it down to just "hot". Whatever gastronomic emergencies may have arisen from the hottest level of the scale, the second-hottest still brought the kind of heat that clears the sinuses, but allows you to still taste the food. Took a co-worker out for last day lunch. Thought going to Siam Cuisine, but found Bann Thai instead, but decided to give it a try despite only one other diner in the once pretty busy Siam. I should have gone with my first instinct and leave and taken my co-worker to Thai Tradition instead. From start to finish, our food was very disappointing. The salad over dressed, crab Rangoon was average, and our lunch entrees were unappetizing. I rarely leave food behind (I get a take home container), but this time I did not want to finish the small lunch portion I ordered nor take home more than half of what I was served. I came here for the first time with my cousin. She absolutely loved it here and used to be a regular. I guess I expected too much prior to coming here because of how "amazing" she said the food was. Personally, I thought the food was mediocre. Not only that, I didn't think it was worth the price. I was still hungry afterwards. The service, however, was excellent. Everyone was very friendly. I had bad experience with this place. At first, the taste of the food from this restaurant is the most authentic compared to the rest in town. However, the place is dirty and the dishes are not consistent when order at different times depending on the cook's mood? Furthermore, this Yelp says the restaurant is opened today but when I showed up it was close? We used to be regular customers despite the fact that there was no soap in the restroom on our first visit. We mentioned that and they started placing soap. However we finally stopped going after I broke my tooth on two pea sized pebbles inside my spring roll. Clearly they do not wash produce. When we went back to talk to the owner. about it we were treated like dirt and dismissed. She refused to replace them or refund our money, even though we had never made such a request. We tried Bann Thai last night for the very first time. We looked at all of the reviews and were very happy that they actually make spicy food. We were not upset at all when we tried our food. We ordered the chicken pad Thai, spicy basil with chicken, cashew chili chicken, and the massaman curry. We got all of them HOT level and they were hot. . This place is no joke, but it wasn't like some places where you get something really spicy and you don't get the actual flavor of the food, you could still taste the flavor of everything and it was fantastic!!!!! If today wasn't Sunday and they were closed we would have been back for round two. I also read in some reviews that the owner was not very nice well those people are so crazy. She was super sweet on the phone and when I picked up my order I got there a couple minutes after close to pick it up and she said there was no problem with me coming a couple minutes late. She also knew it was our first time there and she told me to text her and let her know what we thought about the food and the spice level. As soon as we tried it I text her and told her it was fantastic and the heat level was great. This place is so so good and the service was great. We will be back every chance we get. First of all they've moved to W. 13th in a little strip mall next to Knolla's Pizza. This place is the real deal and very friendly. I'll caution that it gets very spicy very quickly like some authentic Thai places I've been to so order it mild or mild + at the most, unless you're just in from Bankok. Went there at dinner time on 7/2/12. Ordered Pai Tai, Papaya salad. Pai Tai noodles is chewy and hard and too sweet, the shrimps inside still have the shell on, some of the lose shells inside the noodles almost chock me. The chicken pieces is chewy. The cook put a quarter of cabbage (not sliced) at the side of papaya salad, weird :( After dinner, I tried to tell the waiter (an middle east young man) of the problems that I saw in those basic Thai dishes, the waiter suddenly tried to hurry me go, and treated me like a trouble maker. I would advise that you don't visit. The food was average and the service wasn't very good. The restaurant isn't nice and the owner and manager isn't nice. Shes super rude and didn't talk to me, my friends, or her employee very nicely. I don't think ill ever return to be honest. Also they were out of 4 of the things we asked for! Our first try and it did not disappoint. It seemed to be a bit understaffed and I felt bad and wanted to jump up and help the lady taking orders and from the looks cooking as well but bless her heart she did it all. (Assuming owner). Spring rolls were amazing and appeared hand rolled, Thai tea was sweet and creamy and a great addition to help cool down the spice level! There's a white bird describing and saying no refunds which why would anyone demand one I was told multiple times that the spice level is more intense than other Thai places around town and after reassuring her I could handle it I got the medium and boy it packed the right amount of punch but still allowed you to taste the food which had excellent flavor. The crunch of the peanuts and the freshness from the sprouts helped round out the dish. I ordered medium level which is about the equal to four chili's at other places. My co diner ordered Med+ and it was a bit much for her but she knew it would be walking into it, I didn't think it had any heat. Afterwards she came out, thanked us and seemed happy I was able to handle it, told me I should creep up the scale next time (possibly) and to please come back. I did over hear another customer say the reason they hadn't touched the food is because they had a tiny stomach or was it just to hot? My only experience with Bann Thai so far has been their Green Curry, but it was quite good. The owner was very helpful explaining their heat level and her description was accurate; heed her advice...lol. The curry was excellent, lots of tender chicken and veggies, even the tiny eggplants that just make this. Clean and bright place, reasonable prices.
