There are so many options of food from traditional breakfast dishes, lunch bowls with interesting twists, and a lot of smoothie and juice options. In fact, I thought that a place called "The Kind Cafe" might appreciate someone supporting another local business. Instead, I was told to cover up my coffee with a sleeve. It struck me as a very odd request, but I complied anyway. After that, the experience became increasingly uncomfortable. I overheard the barista making comments to other customers such as, "Thanks for choosing our place for your drink order." Given the context, it felt very clearly directed at me. The comment was made publicly, in front of other customers, and came across as an attempt to shame me for bringing in a coffee from somewhere else. Then he asked me what kind of drink I had gotten. After I answered, he responded, "Oh, I thought it was something special," with a tone that felt sarcastic and dismissive. At that point, I asked him directly whether I had offended him by bringing in a coffee from another business. He told me that outside drinks were not allowed but delivered the message with an attitude that felt unnecessarily hostile. I explained that I had never been informed of this policy and genuinely did not know. I also told him that I felt he was trying to make me feel bad about it. His response was essentially, "I wasn't trying to make you feel bad, but whatever." The policy itself is not the issue. Had someone politely informed me that outside drinks were not allowed, I would have respected that immediately. What bothered me was being publicly embarrassed and treated with passive-aggressive disrespect over what was clearly an innocent mistake. I've been a regular customer for years and order from this place nearly every week. This was the first time I had ever brought in a coffee from somewhere else. Being treated this way by both the owner and the main barista was disappointing and completely at odds with the values this business claims to represent. For a place that calls itself "The Kind Cafe," this was one of the least kind customer interactions I've experienced in a long time. Perhaps this is an opportunity for some reflection on what kindness actually feels like from the customer's side of the counter.

But 4.6 stars with as many reviews as The Farmer's Table has? Absolutely! The atmosphere is a little bit diner but cozy enough and has the farm as a theme. There are some cool design elements, like the steel ceiling, the tables... The bathroom was clean and well stocked, and that's a really good sign that the place is sanitary and organized. The waitress was really, really nice... and we loved that we were in this tiny little town and yet she had this really cool, funky image. Great fingernails! I'm jealous! A tip for her to make service even better... think about sequence of service. Think about the extras that the customer will want with the specific thing they ordered so that they won't have to bother you. If they order something with fries, definitely put ketchup on their table, and do it before the food is delivered. There were also a lot of empty tables with salt shakers, but it's had none. Some customers notice these little things and appreciate a server who anticipates their needs. On the other hand, maybe she was just really slammed busy before we got there. My wife and I waited like 2 minutes for her to take my order and she apologized profusely for having us wait so long for her. I was like, "am I in Manhattan or wut???" She was on point, generally easy to find when we needed her, she was never trying to hide from customers (a huge no-no) and very well-intentioned. Definitely a keeper. The food though... I was still hungry after that so I finished my wife's catfish 'cuz she gets full easily. I liked the catfish more, but neither of us thought it was anything special. What was special were the prices. The catfish included 2 sides, and it cost less than $14. Being from NYC, it was so refreshing to see pricing that reminded me of year 2000! A burger for $7.85 that's not Burger King? Incredible! But the cole slaw... ewww. I didn't hate it, but I kind of forced myself to eat it even though it had a strange flavor. The sweet potato fries were ok. Everything was basically O.K. I imagine that, if I lived there, I would go pretty regularly cuz it's probably the best thing the neighborhood has in a few square miles, and it's easier and more fun than cooking at home (if you're not a cook and you're busy at work). But I think that some improvement in the food could make the place more of a destination. And a destination could actually bring more business to the surrounding businesses! I can understand if the townspeople want very basic food there, but at least offer a few specials that are fancier, better ingredients, something that stands out and is memorable. The pie options change often due availability. So if you have a favorite one in mind, call ahead and ask to have it saved. I've been eating at this restaurant for a couple years and let me tell you William S's review says more about Willie than it does about the place. First off, the staff here work hard, and most of us locals appreciate that. Complaining about wait times and drinks like coffee and chocolate milk taking "too long" just sounds petty. Cold eggs and missing toast? That happens sometimes in any busy diner. Most people just ask politely and get it fixed. The owner pays the light bill and the wait staff will heat up anything you ask them to. As for the owner being "defensive," maybe she was just tired of being talked down to. There's a difference between giving feedback and acting like you're the food critic of a small-town breakfast joint. What Willie completely ignores is that the wait staff and owner are very community oriented. They often look after the old timers who come in daily, and they've even been known to feed the homeless when they can. During the Fireman's carnival they remove desserts off their menu and let the cake wheel have the business. They currently are making Christmas happen for several less fortunate children through their Wish List project. That kind of generosity matters more than nitpicking over toast. And honestly, given the level of crying Willie has done in his review, he might be better off sitting in a baby chair (THRONE) instead of the freshly re‑upholstered booths the rest of us are now enjoying.
