If your looking for a nice evening to relax, this is not the place for that. We heard some alright reviews from our Russian friends and decided to give this place a shot. Came out to this BANYA with the family and we were all pretty disappointed. Started out with having to wait at the front desk for someone to come out and check us in for about 15minutes. As you walk into the main entrance to the changing rooms, it's pretty dark and smelly. Alcohol is not permitted while utilizing the saunas and the rest of the amenities, but clearly no rules or regulations are followed. There was a bunch of old Russian men that were clearly intoxicated and were being super loud and disrespectful. One of them even passed out, but front desk wouldn't call 911 as they were afraid to get in trouble by authorities and instead called the owner of the BANYA to come and asses the situation! The hot tub was not working at the time of our visits, and the steam room wasn't working properly either. We didn't try the food as we have this food at home typically, but did hear from other guests that the prices are overpriced for the portion size food you get. We did order the Kvas which wasn't bad. Overall, this place needs some major renovation and up-keeping, better customer service and set some clear expectations regarding regulations and having alcohol on the premises. We had a fantastic and relaxing time. The food was like back home (great soup). The banya crowd is friendly and welcoming. Couples massage was done with real skill and strength. They really focused on getting our knots out, stretching and overall health. Highly recommend to Russian and non-Russian speakers. Clothing is mandatory (swimwear). Went out of my way to try this place out, always looking for great spas. HOWEVER, never had a chance to see the inside of the place....Arrived at "opening" time of 4:00 and waited outside for 30 minutes. calling several times only to reach voice mail. Finally someone picks up the phone and I ask, "Are you open, yes or no?" received some kind of garbled unclear answer and then a hang up. Waited, waited, waited, called again to be told something like "opening in about 5 minutes, we were fixing something". Not really clear what was said. Promptly cancelled my appointment I had with them and drove down to Olympus Spa in lynnwood because they actually run a business like a business. My legs were so sore this morning,,,, I had an appointment in Everett at 1100 for my job and remembered about this place. I knew it was going to be close to 20.00 bucks to get a soak and I only had about an hour to spare. I decided I would give it a try. I got there at about 1120, the place was almost empty, but I heard it can be pretty busy sometimes. The facilities seemed to be very clean to me. I used the steam bath first, but I didn't think it was warmed up yet. The hot bath was above average, but the cold plunge really made it worthwhile. The russian dry sauna was nice and hot. Before I left, the guy working there turned up the steam sauna told me he could bring steam into the dry sauna. It was all appreciated. I enjoyed my self for the happy hour price, but not sure it would be worth it for me at full price or if it was too crowded. read more

Terrible customer service. My fiancé and I bought Groupon deals for Downtown Banya. He has been there many times and for me it was the first time. He never made reservations to go there and as I thought all russian banyas would take all walk-in customers. We came there about 6 PM and the lady at the reception said that we can not go with our groupons without reservation. She also said that she has only 10 spots available and they are only for full price customers. She was very rude. She did not ask if we would like to make a reservation for the next time or apologize for this rule or something. She was not interested in brining new clients to their business or either to make old customers happy. She gave us her attitude and we left very disappointed. Now we don't even want to go back there. We spend 40 minute driving there from Seattle and won't do it again. read more

The main room is cold, there are no pool chairs to relax, they give you just 2 towels for the whole session, which is kind of not enough for a sauna. Once you try Banya - you are "hooked!" The weekly ritual in Russia is to attend banya on Friday or Saturday night. In the midst of Russian cities, there are public Banyas and private ones available to rent "by the hour." This Banya is a great example of a Russian-style suburban banya. Facilities: 1. Very clean. 2. Wet sauna (steam) and dry sauna (make sure to close the door tightly behind you - steam will be escaping - people will be mad). 3. Cold and deep pool. It's there for you to utilize. Right out of the dry sauna - barely walking - dump yourself into the cold pool - strengthening your immune system and rejuvenating your body and Spirit. 4. Ask for a cold KVAS. The best drink in Banya to keep you hydrated and "fresh." For a few bux you will experience real bread drink better than "chemicalish" cola. 5. Jacuzzi can fit in quite a few folks. 6. If you are a smoker - ask for a robe. You can slip outside and smoke in an alley while steam is coming out of you. Downtown folks are use to it. 7. Plan to spend at LEAST 3 hours there. Make your $ worthwhile! Come with your food or order good food from their menu (very tasty food). 8. Great lounge with a pool table, TVs, tables and chairs, comfy couches... 9. Parking - two blocks away is the public parking - 5 bux for a few hours. Vehicles are safe. Attendants on duty. Do not park on the street where Banya (Colby?) - the parking is for 90 minutes only. Don't be paranoid with - just park in a public parking mentioned above, so you can REST in Banya, not worry about parking tickets. People: 1. Ask staff for a tour if you are there first time. They will gladly walk you through and outfit you with a rob (ask for one) and a towel. 2. In the Banya everyone is "running the Devil away." Everyone is becoming clean and Strong. Talk to people. Everyone is friendly including visitors. If you don't know much about culture, traditions - ask people. They will gladly explain. Conclusion: And... You never know... This place is nothing like spas I've been to in the past. With the Russian food and clientele, and the casual, basic atmosphere, it was a refreshing way to relax and sweat out toxins while feeling almost like I'd gone on a trip somewhere. The food was delicious! They serve a few good beers too, ice cold. The dry sauna is broiling hot (good!) and the showers are large with good water pressure. I love a good hot tub, but theirs was barely warm, and customers couldn't adjust the temperature. The steam room seemed like it was nice once, and as long as there was lots of steam I barely noticed, but there was a strong mold smell in there. I avoided the cold plunge since the still water was visibly full of a day's worth of hair and body oil (we went during their final hours on a weeknight). Overall, I would go again, but mostly for the quirky experience with friends. read more

Don't trust their promotions - they will try to rip you off. Happened to me on two separate occasions. First time, it was with Facebook Two for One promotion. A few friends (~10 of us) went there, and upon check out (you pay when you leave, so usually you don't know what trick they could play beforehand) they told us that only 2 of us can use Two for One promotion, and the rest have to pay full price. Second time it happened with Groupon (this "deal": https://www.groupon.com/deals/downtown-banya-2) So it's 3-pass Groupon, and it states right there that "Promotional value must be used in 1 visit." So I called them (reservation is required) to let them know that we are coming, and they told me that only one person can use Groupon, everyone else will have to pay the full price. I couldn't get a satisfactory answer on how one person can use 3 passes in 1 visit, all I got is "this is our rules". I now believe that they set these deals up to intentionally rip customers off. Although a hardcore B5er, I love to mix my heat up at Downtown Banya. The hottest hot and the coldest cold in town (or towns, since i know of no other public banyas in the Northwest). The Russian food in the cafe is perfect post plunge: borscht, a tasty smoked trout, and a beer from St. Petersburg whose name I can't recall. It took me a while to get used to the non-stop Russian music videos playing in the soaking areas, but now I actually crave them. read more

This place is awesome. The sauna is very hot, and great. Admission is a little pricey, but the sauna is worth it. You won't find a better sauna anywhere (this is nothing like 24 hour fitness's sauna). Tried the food, it's great, pelemeni, borsch was VERY delicious. although there should be some sort of discount for spa + food. I read someone else's review about the music, they play Russian Pop music on TV (which is ok). That's what most russians enjoy.. It a Russian banya (russian food, russian popular music, etc). Before reading this review please understand it is for the bistro, not the sauna. I've debated with my friend a few times whether or not the Downtown Banya orders restaurant quality pre-made food or whether it makes everything by hand. I argue that it must be made by hand. The food is delicious, authentic and reasonably priced. I've never seen a nicer place to eat for such a reasonable price. As you enter their small storefront you have no idea that the seating area and Banya is so nice downstairs. The restaurant has a very club, underground atmosphere. It's something I would bring a group of friends to for late night drinks (unfortunately their kvas, though delicious, is non-alcoholic). The only criticism I have is that the average wait for food seems to be about 20 minutes. I imagine if the food is done by hand that it takes a longer time to prepare, but I would not go here if I was in a hurry. Between the atmosphere, the good food, reasonable prices and nice people, I rate this 5 stars. read more

The real thing! This is a genuine Russian banya, very much like Banya 5 in Downtown Seattle. If you like a very hot sauna followed by a dip in a cold pool, you will really enjoy spending a few hours here. On the other hand, if you're in a hurry, it might be hard to justify the cost of admission. read more

Downtown Banya is everything you need in a Russian Banya, as long as you go there with an open mind. As opposed to many of the recent reviews, we enjoy our trips to the banya. The majority of the time all facilities are working and clean (fyi, leaves in the water are most likely from Veniks used in the sauna). The sauna is hot, the steam room scented with essential oils, and cold plunge refreshingly frigid :-) They frequently have deals, and we kind of like the Russian music videos. The experience allows you to enjoy some Russian culture/pop culture...it might be a little more relaxing with a change of music, but it wouldn't be Downtown Banya! read more

The facilities were good, the massage was wonderful but we asked for a 90 minute massage which was supposed to give us the facilities for free. We ended up getting only 60 minute massages and they charged us for the facility usage. I wasn't pleased with that. I had a gift certificate for $200 which I thought was great but apparently there was supposed to have been a $500 gift certificate in there. They charged my friend $500 on his credit card. He didn't check the gift certificate after he got home with it. After my visit we were talking and realized this mistake. No way to prove it... so he is out $300. We feel very cheated! read more

I LOVE coming to this place when it's cold outside. There are times when you just need a good relaxing soak in a hot tub than a shower at home. The food is fantastic. The service is friendly. If you like to be disappointed, this spa is for you. I came here because it was my sisters birthday & she got to come in for free so we decided to try it out. When we went inside, there was no attendee so we had to wait before she finally came to the front desk and she showed us around and there wasn't much to it. There was a cold pool, hot tub, a steam room and a sauna, it was pretty small considering the price you pay to get in. Palace spa in federal way had way more rooms and tubs and it's cheaper too. But anyways, there was a large group of Russian old men that harassing me and my sister. First of all, they thought we were American (we're actually Russian) and they kept talking sh*t about us in Russian, how rude!! Then one of the older Russian guys came up to me and questioned me as to why I was in the hot tub instead of the sauna and told me how I was making a dumb decision that I was in the hot tub, like hello can't you leave a girl alone, I'm just trying to relax???? I wAs appalled by his rudeness, I didn't even know this guy either! Anyways besides that, another thing is that the sauna is in major need of renovation, a lot of the wood pieces were barely on and were wobbly when you walked on them. I am also confused about which spa the 5 star reviewers went to. The woman working the front desk was nice and the hot sauna was good and hot, but really, nothing else was positive about this experience. If we hadn't come on a cheap Groupon deal we would have been very angry. First off: The "dry" room outside the spa area is like an old basement rec room, with musty carpeting, a pool table and some tables and chairs - but nothing comfortable to lounge on. The only thing to do was play pool or watch the Russian TV - even the magazines were just spa magazines about other spas, which was cruel because every other spa seemed like a magical place compared to where we were. This is also apparently where you order food, but other than the menus laying around, you wouldn't know that there was a kitchen in the building. It didn't feel like a cafe, and I didn't feel great about ordering food there. However, we were hungry so we did. The food was fine, but not worth what we paid for it (especially considering the atmosphere was so weird.) In addition, as I mentioned there's a huge flat screen TV that was blaring first Russian MTV, and then later, Russian news. Not relaxing. Secondly: The spa was very limited. It looked like they put some money into trying to make it nice, but it was small. There was only one steam room and one hot room. The hot room was hot, but the steam room wasn't working when we were there. Also, it smelled like mildew. Since there were only the two rooms, that really limited the experience. The hot room had a bench that was loose, but you had to step on to get to any of the higher levels, and I kept wondering if I was going to step through it or something.The hot pool was fine - just like a hot tub. The cold pool was cold, but I noticed after I got in and out that it had a lot of stuff floating on the surface. It was probably just spit, but it was disgusting - and I'm not a squeamish person usually. I opted to just rinse in the cold shower from then on out, and even stopped getting in the hot tub. It had jets going so I couldn't see if it had stuff floating in it, but considering how bad the cold tub was, I didn't want to risk it. Also, as others have mentioned, there was a flat screen TV blaring Russian MTV in this room as well. Not relaxing. Third: We happened to show up on a day that someone was having a graduation party, though it hadn't started yet. I don't know why they kept the spa open to the public. The place was decked out with graduation decorations, which was odd but not a big deal, but she didn't tell us when we checked in that it was going to start soon - and that there would be a ton of fully dressed people showing up to party and eat in the "dry room." So we went out to the "dry room" to get something to eat about 45 minutes after getting there. The employee was nice enough to give us robes (since we didn't want to just hang out and eat in our swimsuits) - and thank god for the robes, because just after we ordered people started showing up. It was very uncomfortable, because we were the only ones there not a part of the party. If we hadn't ordered food we would have just gone back into the spa area, but we were kind of stuck. It took a long time to get the food too, because apparently the kitchen was also cooking for the party. We were clearly the wet, partially naked, uninvited guests in the middle of the party. It was very NOT relaxing and uncomfortable. My husband used to live in Russia and was as confused as me. He pointed out that a traditional Russian banya really is very simple, and more like a gym than what Americans would consider a "spa" - just a hot room, a steam room, and a cold pool. Also, the dried leaves that other reviewers have mentioned come from the venik massage (being lashed/massaged with bundles of sticks/leaves) - so that's an authentic byproduct of a Russian banya. However, he couldn't understand the atmosphere with the loud music/news, or the strange "dry room" experience, and was just as concerned about the cleanliness of the facility as I was. I guess I have been spoiled by the Olympus Spa which is the same price, and infinitely better. There's also another Korean spa in Lynwood that is co-ed and really close to Olympus that I went to with my husband, which was great. If Downtown Banya only cost $10 I would recommend it to those who don't belong to a gym and just want to sauna for an hour or two. However, considering how expensive it is, I wouldn't recommend Downtown Banya to anyone. read more

I love a good sauna, however, I was slightly disappointed by my overall experience. The cold pool had a shimmering oil across the top which made me hesitate about jumping in. The actual hot sauna was good. A good hot temp and a very cool looking banya oven which was the best when a regular customer threw water on the stones. My husband and I felt great afterwards, but it was fairly expensive (30$) for the two of us to stay just a couple hours. The beer we ordered afterwards was great after the sauna but the whole night out came to around $75. Two stars because of the price, whereas we've been to other saunas with more sauna rooms for less money and nicer facilities. read more

Banya is a lovely experience for family or for single visitors who want a quiet, clean and healthful experience. The cold and hot pools are surrounded by an authentic Russian sauna and a steam room. The staff took a great deal of time to ensure I understood how to fully use a Russian spa. That made the experience all the better. On a Saturday afternoon, there were probably six adults and three children between 11 and 6 years old. The children were well behaved and everyone was quiet. I had a spa treatment (body scrub) that was THE best I have ever had (including the Russian spas in NYC which are three times the price). The food was lovely and very reasonably priced.
