Some of the best sushi I've ever had, ever, and I'm including my trip to the sushi stalls at the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo. What's nuts is that this place is in Denver. The rolls here are certainly not traditional, but they are incredibly tasty and fresh. The combinations of ingredients in the rolls give them amazing favors. The tempura batter is of a higher quality than your typical "Japanese" food joint. The kara age was delicious, with crisp skin and a juicy inside. I have no clue why some people gave this place low ratings, but I'm guessing some of these folks have never left the plains states and wouldn't know a kimono from a kipa. read more

My boyfriend and I ate here for the first time on Christmas Eve since I was craving sushi and we were sadly disappointed. I forget the exact names of the rolls we ordered but mine had no mention of spice and yet I could taste a jalapeño-like flavor in every bite. Have you seen Jiro dreams of sushi? The part where Jiro won't let the cook come on the line until he has perfected the tamago? The incredible tamago at Banzai is like that, carefully crafted..layer by layer. The tamago here is like a love song to that unsung hero the humble egg. The owner stopped by our table and gave us some background about tamago around town when I commented that theirs was some of the best I'd ever had. He let us know that most places buy their tamago frozen. (!?!) Banzai's sushi chef makes his from scratch preparing it in a pan he has had for 40 years! This attention to detail and artistry is apparent in all of the food coming out of their kitchens. Thank you banzai staff for making my dreams of sushi come true! read more

Karaage typically involves lightly coating small pieces of marinated meat or fish with a seasoned wheat flour or potato starch mix, and frying in a light oil. The fish is fresh and plentiful in the rolls, the owner is fantastic, and the prices are incredibly reasonable. So went to this place for groupon deal. I have to say sushi is ok - I would focus on the nigiri instead of rolls - as rolls are kind of uninspiring. The cuts of nigiri sushi are large enough to make it good deal. Now the bad - the atmosphere is just so so and the service is going to be uninterested and unwelcoming. This is my favorite place for rolls. It's very nice and cozy and they have over a hundred rolls. My favorites are Monday Night (#48) and Suzy. Portions are good. Quality is excellent. I'm between 3.5 and 4 stars for this place. The food is pretty good, but it takes a pretty long time. The rolls can be pretty big. The staff also wants you to order right away. The complimentary oranges with your bill are an added bonus. The menu's huge, but the names of many of the items are fun. I've had better gold sake, though. This one tasted a little like cough syrup. Also, the kids behind me kept bugging me. At least they weren't at the bar. That would have brought it down a star. I know it's not really the staff, but Sushi is generally not kid-friendly. I didn't even see a kid's menu. If it wasn't for that, the atmosphere would be on-point. Also, I wish that happy hour was a little longer, considering how much of a pain Leetsdale is to travel between 4 and 6. I've dined here on two or three good occasions. Firstly, I came here getting off work and I would say the restaurant doesn't have a casual offset when coming in. It's a very romantic place with some fancy seating, tables, rugs and ceiling. The place is maintained clean and beautiful. We've chosen about 5 rolls and on the second visit, I fell in love with the volcano roll. It was amazing. You can't go wrong with the volcano roll. It was literally so good, it even filled me up to the point of me not having room for more in my little consuming belly. The dessert was phenomenal and very delicious. It had fruit, lettuce, bananas and ice cream. I enjoy the dessert so delightfully well that I couldn't really say no. The staff was also very kind, not pressuring of what you want to order and interested. There's nothing more that impresses me when the service is excellent and people are willing to make you feel welcomed. This is another thing that makes me feel proud to be a consumer of sushi; the ability to say that I've never gotten sick from eating at Banzai. It's amazing. My wife and I frequent Banzai as it is defintely our favorite sushi spot. The Channel 7 A-List must agree because they are the 5-time defending winners of Best Sushi in Denver. The selection of rolls they have here is astounding! We never remember which ones we pick...because it always sounds like we're at some sort of sushi auction when we're trying to pick. I just hear numbers flying at me from everyone in our party. Every time we pull into the parking lot...we tell ourselves we aren't going to over do it. When we're pulling out of the parking lot...we always lament "Oh my God...that was so good but I'm not going to eat for the rest of the week now." On a side note...get there during happy hour (which is most of the day). The hand rolls are PHENOMENAL and only $3 apiece. I must say I REALLY want to give Banzai a 5-star rating...because it is my wife and I's favorite sushi spot. But I just cannot do it...and as you probably can assume from the other reviews it's because of the service. It has been anywhere from decent to downright awful. I do like the credit card machines...as your card never has to leave your hands. But I do not appreciate the supposition that you are going to tip either 18% or 20%. Another place which gave me an unpleasant memory. First of all, their food is bad. They start putting cheap crab sticks last visit. Cheap crabsticks are the ones you cannot shred it finely and if you roll it out, its a flat piece of flour by product. The most outrageous thing is they will hurry you to leave, and if you pay by credit card, the device they use for you to key in the % of the tips are set to 18% the minimum, so you cannot give them 15% tips. So I used to go to this place all the time when I lived in Denver back in 2011-2013 and then I moved to Portland, Oregon which has some unbelievably fresh fish, and so when I just got back to Denver I had to hit up banzai again cuz it was an old favorite....I don't know if Oregon ruined me or they went downhill but there was really nothing special about Banzai. Everything was average at best, which was very disappointing because I really used to like this place. Honestly I probably will not be back. Such a shame. Stopped in here on a friday night. Despite all the complaints about service being bad. I didn't experience this at all. Our servers and sushi chefs were very friendly and fast. The 100 rolls thing was a little too gimmicky for me. The rolls we tried were tasty but nothing memorable. Only one roll stood out as something I would return for, the Dean hand roll. I prefer just regular negiri sushi(rice and fish) to rolls. The fish quality was decent, not great. Rice was a little mushy and not well seasoned. Rice is at least 50% of sushi.... if its not good, kind of ruins the experience. read more

This was a really neat place! I will definitely come back here. It's nicely decorated (as crazy as I may sound, I loved the bathroom too! ha! Even that was nicely decorated). Even the sushi bottles were cute! It's my birthday today, so we wanted to try something new and came across this on Yelp. The people were nice and the service was good. They had made a mistake in my order, but they took care of it right away and apologized. I had the veggie only tempura, the avacado roll, and cucumber rolls (the veggie tempura entree comes with this salad with a very tasty horseradish dressing, as well as miso soup with yummy mushrooms and scallions...plus rice). Some of the sushi was falling apart when it came to the table, but oh well....it was still tasty. The only recommendation is if you're a vegetarian, make sure that you ask what is in certain things. For example, I needed to ask whether the tempura sauce had any fish sauce in it, and she confirmed it did, so I couldn't eat it (I understand tempura sauce is usually fish stock based but some sushi restaurants have a vegetarian version). I'll start with the quality of the sushi: it's good. Not west coast good, but Denver good. Prices: High. $75 for two people, and one person only got a couple of cheap cooked rolls. For the price, the food isn't THAT good. I would hit Sushi Den or Sushi Sasa instead, or go to one of the all you can eat places like Sushi Samurai or Sushi Katsu that charge you way less for just about as good of food. Service: Abysmal. We waited one hour by the clock to get our food. We had to basically trip the waitress to get her to take our drink orders, and we had to ask her after waiting 30 minutes to at least bring us some miso soup. She took our Groupon instantly when we sat down, and of course did not deduct the price from our bill when it came 1.5 hours later. If you are going to go, make sure you don't come hungry. read more

This place is the perfect example of a diamond in the rough. It's in a shabby area, shabby lot, small building, very few seats but the sushi is awesome! The first time I went was with a groupon but that's when I got hooked! There are so many rolls to pick from and the sushi is pretty fresh for Denver. I have only had the sushi rolls I figured they have mastered that since they are the home of the 100 rolls! I really like Bonsai Sushi. Great sushi, great service, great prices. Only thing missing is some fruit (Apple, Mango, etc) in some of the rolls. One of my rolls had lettuce in it which seems a little odd to me. There are a ton of rolls and for the most part they are really good but there is nothing particularly "really special" or appearing "chef created."
