Banzai sushi is a place I don't come often because it is far from me but if I am in the area I definitely stop by. I usually always come for lunch as I feel it is extremely worth the price as soup and salad comes with it. I had stumbled on this place because I was craving takoyaki and this was one of the only places that had it... even thought now it is more common now... also they have karokke which is something that I crave. There karokke and takoyaki is homemade which I love. Also another plus is that this place have so many sushi rolls I have yet to try them all yet. The atmosphere is nice and peaceful during lunch but they can get a lunch rush. The service is great also as people there are extremely friendly. Something I want to recommend is the lunch katsu curry as it is something that I always order and I feel how can you go wrong with Japanese curry. read more

I love sushi, and was excited to try a new place that delivers to my house. It wasn't my favorite. Arrived kinda lukewarm, which should have been a red flag but I tried to persevere. Y'all. I threw out sushi. I did it. My heart broke, but I decided to eat leftovers from the fridge instead. OMGeeeeeeee! Chirashi = sushi love. Banzai Sushi is pretty unassuming from the outside, and to the casual passers-by will probably seem a little cheesy. But wow, don't judge a book by its cover. Inside lies some of the best sushi I've had in D-town. I sat at the sushi bar and had ok service. When the place is packed (as it was the night I visited) you'll want to exercise patience. Getting our drinks was pretty slow. In fact, the couple sitting next to us at the bar didn't get their beer + sake until about halfway through their meal, same with us with our waters. I also saw several people wandering around trying to pay their tabs. But the food totally made up for it. Chirashi bowl, soup, salad, and a cucumber salad for $15? I don't know where you can get a better deal. If someone knows, please tell me. And nothing beats watching your grandmotherly server (I'm not being ageist here, she really could have been my grandma) ring up your bill on an electronic scanner seat-side, and then chastise you when you press the wrong button and crash the transaction. The good: Very intense selection of rolls. Great mix of flavors and the portions were amazing. The bad: The service was horrendous. Three of us were sharing saki and when we tried to order a refill the server actually picked up our container [shook it] and said, "finish this one first". Well, as long as it took us to get that one, we were trying to get a head start...but last time I checked, my mom wasn't working the dining room, so, get my saki. I got a Groupon for this place for Christmas so yes it was a while ago and I did use a Groupon. But to be honest I don't think that was the issue. The location and the building are a little sketch...not bad but Denver has plenty of nice trendy sushi places and this just isn't one of them. When we got there it was a little early so there were only a couple other people there. As time went by the place got much busier. The dining area isn't huge so it doesn't take a ton of people to fill it up. Service was crappy, I would like to blame the language barrier but that doesn't make you act mean and ignore people. On more than one occasion we asked the waitress something and with out a word she walked away and someone else came over instead. The sushi was OK. Not the best I have ever had but with 100 different choices you are bound to find something that sounds good. I didn't find anything that was worth going back for in the sushi department. We did however fall in love with the atomic shrimp. That was something worth going back for...but we still haven't. I wasn't well versed in the Groupon etiquette at the time so I didn't tell them I had the coupon until the end of the meal. The waitress got an attitude and said that the prices were different when you had a groupon (wtf). Then came the creepy credit card machine. It was awkward, really really awkward. To update my 2010 review, I can say that I will still give it a five star review. Price, quality, taste, and service are all in tact. I love consistency. I did miss seeing the owner last night who is very interactive and interesting. I was SO disappointed with this place. I might be a little biased, since Sushi Sasa is the sushi restaurant I go to most often, but I really didn't experience anything positive here. We were seated promptly, and given water immediately, but after that it felt like they were rushing us through everything, and there were 4 waitresses working on our table of two. We didn't want anything else to drink other than water, and they gave the impression that that was rude. They also took our sushi order form off the table before we were done, and seemed annoyed when we asked for it back because we weren't done ordering. There was even some confusion in ordering appetizers. I ordered the miso, and the waitress said "ok, two misos", started to walk off, and then we had to clarify that no, my friend did not want miso, but something else. It really was just altogether kind of an irritating experience. Then the food comes. The yellowtail I've been craving for sooo long. First problem? I asked for Hamachi shashimi, and they brought me nigiri. I didn't mind too much, so I dug in, then found out why they probably shouldn't serve shashimi at all.... It was the least fresh tasting sushi I've ever had. It was dry and flavorless. SO disappointing. Not to mention I also ordered the #19 roll, which comes with more yellowtail on it. After a meal that left much to be desired, they bring us the bill. We ask if we can split it up by what each of us ate, since we each had our own rolls and appetizers. The woman stormed off without saying anything, and then someone ELSE came back with a tiny credit card machine to swipe at the table, on which it asks you whether you want to give an 18% of 20% tip. Um.... I'm sorry, I wanted about a 10% option, because that's what the service warranted, and that's being NICE. We signed our credit card slips and got the heck out of there, never to return. I'm rating this because I wanted to calm to fears of anyone going to this place. I bought a groupon and was near terrified to use it after reading the reviews here! Everyone made me so nervous that I a) took out cash because of the terrifying credit card machine that they bring to your table b) was ready and expecting to have to pay full price in case they didn't accept the groupon c) expected grocery store quality sushi d) was braced for rude service I'm happy to say none of this happened. I am indeed a fan, my daughters are also fans, my best friend from Chicago is too a fan. We have all been to Banzai, and we all like it very very much. Tonight was my 4th time. I have never had a problem with the service here. It has been quite the opposite and when we left tonight we even had a nice chat with the manager. This place is quite tiny and gets crowded fast. It only stands to reason if everything is being hand rolled and cut fresh moment to moment we may have to wait a bit for what we want. That's the evil twin to great sushi quality ... some waiting. We had a BMW roll and a Monday Nite roll, both scrumptious. My 11 yr. old ate about 3 or 4 pieces of Unagi and my youngest inhaled both Ebi and a California roll. The Miso soup was very tasty and rich and not overly salty. We also indulged in some tuna. Very tasty and fresh. I am pleased for a fourth time. I must also add that my Sake just seems bottomless at times ...is it me or them??? The dessert menu reads like a sultry romance novel to me, but alas we were far too full to indulge. This is only the second sushi joint I've eaten from since I moved here a few months ago, but they did not disappoint. We ordered takeout (pick-up because we live so close) through seamless and it was ready to go on time. What needed to be warm was warm and what needed to be cold was just that. I am a sushi snob. I have worked downtown for the last 2 years and have tried almost every single sushi place downtown. This place is better than all of them. We had 4 rolls delivered at work today and a co-worker and I devoured them. The rolls were really good but what I really loved was the Sashimi Nigiri (Salmon). The fish was so flavorful and tender I could have swore that Denver is a port city on the Pacific. I am from Seattle and have lived in Denver for 15 years now. I know good seafood. This place has it. I don't know where they get it, but they have it. Delivery was on time, food was packaged well, all the condiments/utensils were in the bag. Again, let me reiterate. If you don't know sushi then you won't find this place particularly special. But if you are a sushi snob like me, you should DEFINITELY give this place a try. read more

I highly recommend happy hour at Banzai Sushi. Happy Hour: Monday thru Friday, 11:30am-2pm and 5-6:30pm, Sunday 5-9:30pm. Happy Hour Specials: $2 Beer/ hot sake, $2 House Wines, $3 Handrolls, $3 Appetizers, $3 Desserts. My favorites from the happy hour menu: Poke Hand Roll, Albacore & Scallion Hand Roll, Kara Age Chicken, Wow Roll, and the Atomic Shrimp Roll. Off of the regular menu, the Steak Teriyaki is excellent, as are the rolls, and the mochi ice cream is a great way to end the meal. The food is always very fresh, the selection is decent, and the service is pleasant and fast. They also have plenty of parking in the lot. For a high quality establishment, the prices are not bad. The service is pretty terrible, we didn't have any problems with rudeness like others did but it was just so sloooow. We ordered a tempura appetizer and it was bad, really bad, stay away! The rolls were decent, nothing spectacular, but about what I have come to expect of sushi here in landlocked Denver. Better than some places we have tried, on par with the others. Strangely enough, my buddy and I had a fantastic time up until the point where the check was handed to us. The sushi wasn't half bad - much fresher than most places in Denver and the portions were surprisingly generous for the price. Now the not so great. I find it somewhat lame to give a customer attitude for simply using a coupon you originally signed up for. My friend heard a lot of good things about Banzai and suggested we meet there for dinner. I arrived earlier than she but was promptly seated. Water, plates and cups for soy sauce were quickly brought to the table. I killed some time by looking at the menu which is extensive and explains the differences between rolls--a great way to help out a novice sushi eater. I found my vegetable rolls on the order sheet so I didn't worry about the menu. My friend arrived but she wasn't offered anything to drink for at least five minutes. I understand service can get busy but it helps to stay in touch with your tables when you're working the room. We both grew impatient so she grabbed the first person walking past and asked if someone would take our order. I like to think of this as the ramp-up period: expect to wait in the beginning, it's best to order drinks as soon as possible. Once the food arrived all was forgiven: the rolls were beautifully crafted and presented, with large offerings without a lot of rice. The owner of the restaurant stopped by our table to ask how we were enjoying our meals and wanted my opinion about how to offer more options for veg*ns. THAT impressed me and my friend immensely. He chatted with every table in the house, but not in an invasive way. His manner was friendly and open, altogether refreshing. The place will quickly fill to capacity which might overwhelm the wait staff at first. Once people have their drinks and food, everyone is in a groove and the staff are working in better harmony. Maybe I should change the scale on this because I used a Groupon... but really, a discount for food prices shouldn't imply a discount in service or speed. However, that's what I got when I went to Banzai a few weeks ago with my sushi-loving friends. We went on a Wednesday because we wanted the free edamame and ordered a pile of sushi ranging from the basics to the exotic (as they taut their "100 rolls" we figured we'd be happy). We also ordered a sake. Sounds on the up-and-up, right? well... 1. free edamame - there were honestly like 10 of them. I understand that you are giving me a benefit, but, that's a little weak. 2. rolls - all in all they weren't bad. Good flavor, fine presentation, generally "ok"... however, in comparison to the other denver options of Taki, Sushi Den, etc. it wasn't anything special. 3. sake - Any sushi restaurant I've ever gone to gives you a bottle and a bunch of small glasses. When we ordered our sake (to share), the woman seemed confused... that's because they serve sake in a wine glass that is for one. now, if each of us had ordered a wine glass of sake, I'm sure my review would have an extra star because i would have probably been drunk. however, it was just an odd experience. 4. service - again, we understood that we arrived later in the evening (830 dinner time) and we were using a groupon, but they served everything together, the sake, edamame, and sushi which generally threw off our mojo. Additionally, after our first round of sushi we were still hungry and flagged down the waitress to order more. She informed us that the kitchen was closed. OK. Seriously? at a sushi place they don't possibly inform you that you should order more? I've never been to a place that didn't try to get you to order 4 rolls per person or something like that. We ended up having to go to Yogurtland for dessert, which though tasty, was not really in my game plan. No, no, no. Service was horrible. Although I was seated promptly and my order was taken shortly thereafter, it was downright impossible to catch the waitress' attention after that. Maybe it was because I was trying to return the food and get something else. She could see I had hardly touched my plate but nonetheless her eyes shifted away from mine each time I attempted to ask her over. I found the food to be downright bad. I don't know how this place is maintaining such a high star rating? I got the sampler which frankly creeped me out. It wasn't fresh nor was it tasty. The rolls were even worse. They were too big (I like to be able to pop a piece in my mouth, not have to shove it in there with the palm of my hand) and they fell apart each time. These too were not fresh. Although, I had recently written a review where I was not s happy with Banzi Sushi in reference specifically to their service, I have continued to venture there because of proximity to my house. The last time I was there was for a belated Birthday dinner Nov 5th 2013 and I will say that the service continues to improve as long as they are not overwhelmed busy. They changed up their Happy hour menu and you still have to ask for it, as they bring you the regular menu first. If it is before 6:30 go for light apps and hand rolls before HH ends as the deals are great during that time. As far as the sushi goes - it is consistent, no super oh my gawd moments. They do Groupons too and if you got them don't even think of using on Happy Hour they are very clear they will not honor for the time period. Still a local favorite for many but with so many choices of Japanese and sushi joints around they have to make sure the service is as good if not better then the food. I drive by this sushi joint every day, and I've always wanted to try it. I finally got my chance, and I was pleasantly surprised. Now, I've saved the 5 star review for Blue Fin up in Stapleton (tastes like I'm back in Okinawa), but I can safely say Banzai Sushi is my 2nd favorite place in Denver. Now for the run down: Pros -- chipmunk-cheek sized, 8-piece rolls (at least for the more expensive rolls) -- Hula Roll w/ salmon and a hint of pineapple to sweeten it up -- need I say more? -- fast service -- not an issue at all -- refilled water in a timely fashion -- orange slices at the end of the meal -- excellent Steak Teriyaki - the sauce had the perfect texture and taste -- entertaining sushi bar (if you get to sit there) Cons -- ginger dressing for the salad was too creamy and did not taste right -- Spicy Tuna Nachos - not spicy at all, could have kicked it up a notch -- Spicy Tuna Nachos (again) -- 4 tortilla chips for $8...unfavorable ratio -- Tiaoni Roll -- not memorable despite being the most expensive roll on the menu -- "100 Roll Menu" - my biggest pet peeve of all. Do not be fooled by this. There is a lot of duplication going on here. For example, "ABC" roll will have spicy tuna with avocado, and "DEF" roll will have spicy tuna with avocado and some special sauce. It's almost like they came up with the idea of having 100 rolls on the menu to sound really cool and then desperately came up with every combination in the book to reach their goal, and the result is an afterthought. Kind of lame. Overall, I will definitely be back for the Hula Roll and to take advantage of their dinner-time happy hour (Mon-Sat: 5:00 to 6:30 pm and all night Sunday). I dont know why all of the crap reviews. I love this place. I make reservations through Open Table, and there is never a problem. Service is hit and miss but NEVER horrible. The last time I went, they checked on me so many times, I kinda wanted them to stop. Bottom line, most sushi places are WAY over priced in Colorado, and this one isnt. The food is always good, and with 100 diff rolls on the menu, the hardest thing is deciding which rolls to try. And for those of you who get mad about the Credit card machine...where you push a button to have it figure out 15% or 20% tip...you are cheap skates. That is a typical sized tip, and the computer does the math for you. If you cant afford 20%, you prob should shoot over to dollar a scoop and call it good. read more

What a cute little place! I went over with another 7 people and accommodating our group was not a problem at all. We sat down right away for lunch and ordered right away. They offer over a 100 different rolls with descriptions and plenty of other types of Japanese dishes. While my friends ordered the sushi, I had there yakisana(sp) with the Saba (Mackerel). When our lunch came out, everything was very presentable. I have to say my mackerel was very juicy and cooked perfectly! I wanted there to be more of a sauce that I could have dipped it with instead of soy and the ground radish they offered, but it was still very good. As for the sushi.... There were some rolls that were really great and some that fell off completely. I can't remember names because it was a little overwhelming but I enjoyed most of the sushi. Service was great! The waitresses are all little Japanese women who all thank you in Japanese and are quite quirky as well! I thought they were very attentive and sweet. The food came out all together and we didn't have any problems at all. Would I go back? Yes! I have so many more things I would like to try there! I had been really looking forward to trying Banzai for quite some time now and when i found a groupon for it I bought it right away! Before heading down there to try it out, I read some of the reviews on here and man were they different! Some people seemed to love it, and others absolutely hate it, making me kind of nervous to go. I'm very glad I didn't let all of the negative reviews talk me out of this place. The food and service were both pretty darn great. I was expecting, from the previous yelp reviews i read, mediocre sushi and horrible service...along with an apparently odd credit card machine. While, yes, the credit card machine was a bit odd...there was nothing wrong with it, It was actually pretty handy! And the service I found to be very nice and helpful, they just seemed a bit...rushed...which is to be expected on a friday evening for a dinner service. There was a WIDE variety of sushi, we had the Atomic Shrimp as an appetizer, The Atomic Brock roll which was on the dinner specials menu, the Hulu roll, the Mercedes, and pick in roll. Out of those, the Atomic Brock Roll was probably my favorite because I love really spicy food, while the Mercedes was my least favorite, too much rice and nori. I was very happy with it, and I'm STUFFED! If it wasn't so far away from where I live, I would return more often. read more

Open the door to find a comfortable, clean interior cram packed with people. We were lucky enough to get our own 4 top, but there is a long row of tables pushed together where you might get to eat elbow to elbow with prom goers or other folks. An enormous menu of my favorite, rolls. However, my companions always like to order a couple of vegetarian rolls, and we could only find one on all four pages. The slight fishy smell might have made them even more adamant about trying to find something without fish. And if you're looking for anything but rolls, there's not much else to choose from. Our server was a nice enough lady who had way too much on her plate. They could have used at least one other server and probably two bussers. Everything took a very very long time. The manager was really sociable in a sort of cheesy way. When finally our rolls did arrive, they were bigger than is my preference. I like bite size pieces, if it takes me three bites per piece I make a mess of myself. They were good, if not the absolute freshest. I'll try to return on a slower evening to try one of the multitude of yummy looking rolls, but I can't take my usual companions because of the veggie roll thing. I just hope I don't get a seat at the mega table in the middle. The perfect strangers flanking me will probably not like the shemozzle that ensues from my trying to eat those huge pieces... It's on top of my "don't dine here again" list. A tad harsh, yes...but the sushi here was definitely sub par. Came here for their happy hour specials and left completely stuffed and happy! It's awesome to find a place that sells shumai and I'm not talking about the ones you get at dim sum. These come 5 pieces to an order and they were so delicious, I ate two orders by myself. I also tried their chef special "Volcano Roll". The presentation was interesting as the roll was stacked into the shape of a mountain, but there was so much sriracha on it, that I couldn't really taste anything else. I ordered the chicken katsu with a side of curry as my main entree. The chicken cutlets were very crispy on the inside, but nice and moist in the inside. There was also a hint of garlic in the breading. The curry was a vegetable curry with a nice amount of sweetness and a slow kick of heat. Sugoi! Best sushi in Denver! We love going to Banzai because of the food AND the staff! There are so many rolls to try - this is a great place for seasoned sushi eaters and beginners. We love the spicy tuna handrolls and the wow roll, amongst many other things. City search said this place was great and I see a lot of folks on Yelp have said the same. The Service here is horrible. It's slow and very discourteous. I would never go there again for that very reason. It's also laughable how the host/maitre d' (sp) brings out the unfiltered Saki that's in the green bottle and serves it like it is a fine wine and is $100+/bottle...and the custs just eat it up. No telling how much they pay for those little glasses of sake and it's hilarious how they swish it and examine it like it is some rare fine wine. I'm not knocking that particular sake, because it is very good... We used to buy it by the bottle (for about $20) when we went to Arikato in CA but I think it's ridiculous how they are making a killing off of it just because people don't know the difference. Anyway...now onto the sushi. Not bad. Large selection of rolls, which were mostly ok. I'm also not big on the seating in this place. We had reservations but they were full. We didn't have to wait long because they went to another table and made the people move to a smaller table so we could have the larger one....which was pretty messed up. Of course none of that would have been an issue if the reservation would have been correct. We made a reservation for 6 and they somehow got 4 out of it? I most likely won't go back to this place again. The overall experience was pretty bad. I have been to 2 sushi places her and haven't been impressed. Are you tired of the ubiquitous California roll? Come on over to Banzai because it will take you about a year to simply order and eat all the different rolls on their menu. Note their website address is 100rolls.com I think of this as "Fusion Sushi". Yes, they have all the traditional menu offerings, but the real reason people go is to enjoy the wacky mix of ingredients that the chefs will roll up. For example, I had a "Tickle Me Thai" (Yellowtail, Lemon, sweet chili, spicy salmon, asparagus, cucumber and Daicon.) last night for $9.75. If you are tired of the same roll offers you see everywhere such as: rockin' roll, spider roll, caterpillar roll - then you'll be pleased with the adventures you can find here. I would not say this is the ideal place for Japanese home cooking or even nigiri sushi. Most people come to experience the unique rolls. They are lots of fun and quite tasty but if you are a sushi aficionado you might find this place expensive or trite. But if you are that, I suggest you "just roll with it!" and enjoy the place for what it is. read more
