We were just at the Tennyson Street Fair walking in 90+ heat and needed a place to cool down and get our appetite. Luckily Bao Brewhouse opened their second location on Tennyson St and we were able to get a table. You start by ordering at the counter and then a staff will seat you. From there, there's a QR code at the table for you to order more items if you'd like. We ordered the wings, char Siu Bao, pork soup dumpling, short rib bao and chicken lemongrass dumplings (which I totally forgot to snap a pic of). The food came continuously fresh out of the kitchen. We were so full we didn't think we can eat more, but we loved the Char Siu so much we ordered seconds via QR code. Very delicious food. Fresh and quality ingredients. I'm sorry-because the register person was so kind-but I have to warn people about this place. I ordered AT the register tea, shumai, pad see ewe, vegan soup, and soda for a whopping $70! I get it, it's Tennyson-but I could've walked over to Two-Hands and gotten a feast for $70-despite the uppity servers. The shumai I recognized from the frozen section at Hmart, the noodles were so salty, the vegan soup was what the heck was that and again so salty, and the tea arrived at the end of our meal. It's a drop off food and that's it kind of place. The two stars is only for the register person-otherwise Bao Tennyson gets zero. I love Asian food, but I'm usually hesitant about fusion restaurants because sometimes the essence of the original cuisine gets lost. Bao Tennyson pleasantly surprised me overall. I tried the beef tenderloin skewers, and they were the standout, tender, juicy, and perfectly cooked, with a nice balance of sweetness and a bit of heat. The flavor felt intentional rather than overdone, which I appreciated. The jasmine rice that came on the side was fine, but it had an odd taste and was a bit dry. It felt more like a filler than something that elevated the dish. New restaurant - food was kinda mediocre and very expensive. $16 for 6 dumplings - considering the dumplings are not made from scratch- i suspect a lot of the bao and dumplings come straight from the freezer. Come if you to experience the fake Asian vibes, but be ready to pay a lot for mediocre food. The baos for sure were reheated from frozen - and definitely not made on site. Did not know Bao Brewhouse just opened another location on Tennyson. Similar to the one on the 14th, the restaurant had a traditional Chinese theme with a menu of Chinese staples such as baos, dumplings, roujiamos, and skewers. The taste was more fusion than traditional, quite creative, adventurous but surprisingly tasty. The Shanghai smasher roujiamo combined the old fashion puffy roujiamo with fillings that had the resemblance of a juicy Smash Burger. Although it did not taste like the roujamo as I remembered, but nonetheless addictively tasty. The pork xiao long bao soup dumplings were quite authentic, the skin was thin and chewy, the filling was moist, tender and meaty, while the dumplings were filled with the signature savory broth. Overall quite enjoyable and had to try some other items next time. read more

I wasn't a huge fan of this location. The location downtown is a much better spot. You order at a counter and it feels very rushed- especially if you go in not knowing what you want. The guy taking the order seemed annoyed that I was taking a bit to pick my meal. Drink was "okay" but I didn't want another. Food was just okay also- they don't have a huge selection. It's mostly a fast-food style restaurant, but that's kind of the vibe for Tennyson I suppose. I'd much rather prefer the other location, and likely won't go back to this one. I love having this outpost of the brewhouse just a tad bit closer to home. Will stop by on what I think was opening weekend because it was definitely a very slow day. We were only one up to people in the restaurant. Service is a little different than at the brewhouse, with you placing your order at the desk and then grabbing a seat. The selection is decent, but I will say I kind of miss some of the other options at the brewhouse. We got a couple of dumplings in the noodle dish, which we were hoping was a bit spicier. Way overpriced for mediocre food. How can NYC be cheaper than Denver? Some of the items seemed to be previously frozen, not fresh.

Tried this new restaurant and I have to say, the duck roujiamos were the absolute star of the show. The bun was crisp but soft in all the right places, packed with rich, juicy duck that was seasoned perfectly. Honestly, it's the kind of dish that makes you stop mid-bite just to appreciate what you're eating. The rest of the menu was solid too, but the roujiamos are the reason I'll be coming back (and probably bringing friends along). Everything was very skimpy on the protein despite being very expensive. Flavors were decent but not nearly impressive enough to justify the price tags. Nice atmosphere and good service, but we got four plates between the two of us (the amount they recommended), plus one single canned beer and one soda for over 100 dollars. Some of the worst service I have received in a while. I understand this is not objective, but in my opinion, the menu is too much for it to be an order-at-the front type restaurant. There are too many options, it's a little insane that they expect you to order in a timely fashion. We had a line forming behind us because it took us about ~5 minutes to order and definitely felt put on-the-spot. Just seems like a bad system all around. It wasn't very busy when we went, but if it was I can only imagine the clusterfuck that it causes. Im sure they do this because it means they have to staff less people and don't have traditional waitstaff. (Yet the servers still expect your 20%+ tip, despite them not really waiting in you). The plates at our table were dirty, like visibly had old food still stuck to them, gross. We mentioned this to the guy who brought our drinks and he barely acknowledged it, and didn't bring us new plates. When the food started to come out we had to ask the food runner again for new plates. The glasses our drinks were served in were also dirty. Our server sneezed on us when he dropped the drinks off as well. We ordered at lot of food and were seated at a two-person table. All the food came out at once and there was not room for everything at the table. Just poor service. I don't expect everything to be coursed out perfectly, but really? all our apps and entrees and dim sum at once? When we finished it took forever to get a to-go box and settle the check, about 30 minutes of waiting, even flagging down food runners asking how we were suppose to settle up. They insisted someone would come by soon. I ended up needing to just go to the front, wait in line, just to pay. If I weren't a better person I would say I regret not just leaving without paying, since they had clearly at that point just forgotten about us entirely. Wont be coming back. The only reason this isnt one star is because the food was good. Everything else about the experience sucked. read more
