Loved the perfectly chewy ropes of bucatini tangled with crumbled blue cheese, Castelvetrano olives -- and vodka sauce? This should've been a weird disaster, but wound up being our table's favorite dish. Every dish is a commitment to the genuinely unexpected. There was something delightfully more than just salt, pepper and fry behind the eggroll-sized mozarella sticks. Then there was the fig gelato, flanked by warm pear -- and oh my gosh, the apple tart! We had to go back and reread the menu to realize that the caramel really was spicy! This kitchen really finds the funky note in a dish and leans into it. Come ready to share. Every item comes in a "single" and a "mingle" size, which was great for our table of four. We would order 1-2 mingle-sized items, pass them around, and argue about who gets the last forkful. The rough edge is perhaps the service, but this spot is new and finding its rhythm. We found the handoff between counter and floor to be clunky, since it felt like pressure to order in order to be seated, not to order drinks and wait for a table. Maybe this works in a larger space. We came here for a nice dinner night out after hearing great things about the restaurants and I was somewhat disappointed. Coming into it, I know Boombots has an eclectic restaurant with a fusion pasta menu, and I was fully on board with trying some weird, funky pasta. The restaurant was nicely laid out and decorated, and the vibes are great. The drinks are delicious and they have one of my favorite non-alcoholic cocktails (What the Hellyante). However, the mains come and the wheels fell apart. We got the congee risotto, the bucatini primavera, and the gyros cavatelli. Let's start with the positive. The bucatini primavera was tasty. The pasta was well cooked and everything ate very well together, albeit a little dry. Overall, a good dish. The congee risotto was also not bad. It was definitely one of the dish I was looking forward as someone who followed their Instagram, but the execution was off. The rice was well cooked but it ate just a tad bland. The 63 degree egg was just a tad over and unfortunately, the told was on the cold side. That said, it was tasty nonetheless. My least favorite part was the amount of toasted seeds on top. There was simply too much and it knocked the balance of the dish towards overly crunchy, which is not necessarily what you expect in a risotto or a congee dish. Finally, the gyros cavatelli was just not it. In my opinion, the dish just didn't work for me. It's a dish with za'atar pasta, gyros, cherry tomatoes, pickled red onions, crispy chickpeas, dill, nad tzakiki. The warm tzakiki sauce along with the picked red onions and cherry tomatoes ensure the dish eats on the sour side. For me as well, the warm tzakiki was off putting in smell and taste. The pasta was also undercooked and grainy. It wasn't al dente, just undercooked. And with everything, the gyros is kind of lost. Overall, just a really odd dish in terms of conception and execution, and one that I didn't enjoy. Overall, I will be generous and give 3/5. I think service was pretty good, the drinks were delicious, and the price was acceptable. Other dishes, such as the lumache and the salads, looks pretty good as well. But based on what I got today, I cannot recommend the dishes we got at Boombots. read more

Loving Odie B's doesn't translate to love for this newer venture. Everything was fine - good even. Nothing a standout which just feels a little flat to me. With a limited menu, I expect much more creativity and higher execution level. Gucci Gang (gochujang cocktail) was good but not the most balanced. Decent wine selection. When checking in, they do take your first drink order at the counter before seating you. I could take or leave that in terms of service. The interior design is really clean and warm. The dishware (plates, bowls) is all plastic. I think that is in need of change, even at a pretty moderate price point. I would accept it easily if the food menu was improved. I think it has potential with more development. At this time, I cannot imagine running back here. To be clear, the pricing and portion sizes are good. Our bill was about $140 w/o tip for three single small plates, two single pasta, two cocktails, and two glasses of wine. And I DO have good things to say about what we ate. The broccoli was insanely crispy and also fairly fresh/crunchy, and that's some special kind of technique there. Both salads (Spring Roll and House*get this one) were tasty. The Pizza Lumache was undersold, and I'd vote that dish a definitely order. Overall, the food is quite weird which is maybe what they are going for but it didn't quite hit for me. Their pastas are unique but not entirely appealing sounding on a menu. The only pasta we were interested in was the dirty martini one which was fine. Pretty much a vodka type sauce with olives and garlic. I liked the noodles type but overall a bit light on flavor. We also got the big ass mozzarella stick which was fine but has a red sauce on the inside. I prefer traditional with just cheese on the inside but overall was good. The salad was way too acidic that I couldn't actually eat it. I actually make a pepperoncini dressing at home so I know I like that kind of thing, but it was very unbalanced - maybe had the juice and vinegar which is way too much acid. Ambience is SUPER cute though. I'd love to come in just for drinks sometime. Service was fine. This is not the restaurant's fault but we tried to pay with Blackbird and it was an awful user experience. We looked online and saw that reservations were booked, so my husband and I took the gamble and stopped by at 5:30pm on a Saturday hoping we could get in and I'm so happy we did. There was no show of hemming and hawing, just excellent service right off the bat. The hostess takes your drink and app order before you sit down which I think is genius. I order the Love Mai Nonna drink which was described as a Mai Thai meets a cannoli and it was SUPERB. I was afraid of it being too sweet but it was just sweet enough. We also ordered the mozzarella stick which is a must try! We easily could have (and should have shared one). We shared the mingle sized house salad. The pepperoncini was in the dressing, so if you love the flavor of it like we do it was spectacular. If you hate the flavor I would advise you to select a different dressing. The dirty martini pasta was my favorite. 10/10. The everything stroganoff pasta was also good. The sauce had a sweet aftertaste which I personally wasn't as big a fan of but my husband loved. The beef was crisped to perfection which was a delightful surprise. We ordered the pumpkin county cake to go. The waitress told us she doesn't like pumpkin or coconut but LOVES this cake, and I'm thrilled we believed her because I will be thinking of it for weeks to come. Boombots Pasta comes from the same team behind Odie B's, which immediately had my attention. Located in Sunnyside, this spot is all about fresh, homemade pasta but with a twist. This is not your nonna's pasta. It's playful, unexpected, and definitely doing its own thing. Some dishes landed stronger for me than others, but overall it's creative, fun, and clearly intentional. That said, the real star of the show for me was not the pasta. It was the mozzarella sticks. And I do not say that lightly. They were insanely cheesy, perfectly gooey, and honestly the best mozzarella sticks I've ever had. If you go and don't order them, that's on you. This is a cute, new outpost hidden next to Odie B's Bodega. It was tough to find because the sigh is sort of hidden and not easy to read from the street. We had a reservation for four and we're greeted at the front desk. We were asked to place our drink orders there while we were standing. They were brought to us before we receded, which was a little strange. I wanted to sit to order my drink. Perhaps this was a way to expedite a part of the meal to get things moving faster. The service from that point was good, but one server was in charge of most all the tables. It was a lot for her! We started off with the root vegetable salad, and I can't recommend it highly enough. It was delicious. The almond ricotta was such a nice touch on top of it. A friend and I shared the stroganoff pasta and the vodka sauce bucatini with blue cheese. The stroganoff pasta was not too our liking. It was very sweet, overly so, however, the beef in it was cooked well and very tender and delicious. We left a lot of pasta because we didn't care for the dish in general. The bucatini was much better to me. The sauce was very rich and good. The pasta is definitely very fresh and homemade. My friends enjoyed their wine and the mingle vs single plates are nice so people can share more in a family style way (smaller than true family style, but shareable) or have their own thing. A bowl of the mingle can feed 3-4 with a salad. Our friend had a birthday and they brought a butter pecan ice cream out that was rich and good, but had a little onion flavor to it. We were a bit early to our 8:15 reservation, but the host greeted us and let us know that we could order drinks and apps at the communal bar while we waited. I believe this is a newly opened restaurant, and I was pleasantly surprised to see how crowded and packed this place was on a Saturday evening with no insights on reservations. We arrived around 6:15 PM, and we were told the wait was around 90 minutes. This is not one of those places where they have lot of space or too many tables - so be prepared to wait if you don't have a reservation. I believe they use OpenTable for reservations. It's a very cozy restaurant with perfect amount of lights and cozy booths. We waited for some time for a table,but ended up snagging seats at the bar. We began with a few drinks, which were delicious, followed by the big ass mozzarella sticks. This is not going to be your typical mozzarella stick. The mozzarella was mixed with a few other fresh ingredients, which made it quite flavourful. For mains, we got the bucatini and the beef stroganoff. My bucatini was freshly made but seemed slightly on the tangy side - I enjoyed it Nevertheless. My husband got the beef stroganoff, and I can attest that the beef was so flavourful and had a crunch to it which made it very different and paired well with the cheesy pasta. For desserts, we did not feel like picking anything off the menu because they had a pumpkin cake and an apple tart, and I wish they had something more traditional, like a tiramisu or cannoli. We skipped desserts. The service here was excellent. Our host and our server were the sweetest. The staff is incredibly welcoming and friendly. We love Odie B's so had to check out Boombots. We ordered takeout on a Friday evening and despite a busy service, our food was ready in 15 minutes. Everything was packed beautifully such that the presentation was intact and the food was warm. We tried the big a** mozzarella stick, butternut risotto, samosa agnolotti and duck and green chile lumache. Everything was perfect, cooked al dente and well-seasoned (not salty!). The concept of each dish was there and they worked so well. We loved the brightness of the beets and goat cheese with the richness of the butternut squash that also wasn't too heavy, the nice hearty whole wheat wrapper of the agnolotti that was reminiscent of a samosa wrapper, and the really nice kick in the mozz stick. The lumache is now up there for fave "Mac 'n cheese"-- rich but not overly so and the duck was soft but flavorful. Take-out or dine-in, this place is a winner! read more

I ordered some pasta that felt like i was eating a mac n cheese pizza with banana peppers and a salad that was sweet, wet and goopy. What an amazing and sensory experience! A girlfriend of mine and I came here on a Thursday night, we tried to get a reservation a couple days in advance, but there were none so we just showed up around 6 PM. The place is intimate and cozy, sharing a building with odie b's next-door, and under the same ownership. We ended up sitting at the bar, but the restaurant actually only allocate a number of tables to reservations to preserve the ability for walk-ins to be seated as well. Kristof was working behind the bar and helped us the entire time. They gave great recommendations, but that's easy to do when every dish is phenomenal. We skipped straight to appetizers, trying the charred root salad and the big ass mozz stick. I have no words for how good that salad was, refreshing but delicious with such a yummy sauce. The big ass Matt steak was also incredible, with the cheese inside seasoned away I have never seen before. When you rip it apart, it would stretch for 2 feet. For the pasta, we tried the dirty martini Bucatini and the green chile (Luna something?) Both of them were amazing, the Luna's had the bacon breadcrumbs which were such a unique and delicious finish on top of such a creamy pasta. The Bukai was also a hit, with the red sauce infused with so much flavor, the olives and blue cheese really offset it to give it a unique depth and balance of flavor. I topped it all off with a scoop of the fig gelato, which came with the most delicious mold, red wine syrup I had ever seen, and never would have thought to combine with ice cream. Topped in granola, a low-calorie crunch was such a nice texture balance for this dish too All in all, I shared this with my friend and including tip, we only paid $40. This is a truly unique restaurant and a great addition to the Denver food scene. Housemade pastas with really unique ingredients you don't find elsewhere all under $20 for single servings. We tried the beef stroganoff and the duck green chile pastas and enjoy them both though the best part of the beef stroganoff dish was the tender and flavorful beef, sweet onions and mushrooms rather than the pasta itself in my opinion (it was just a tad al dente for me). The duck green chile pasta was like an elevated Mac n cheese. The mozzarella sticks may have been the star of the show and easily the best I've had. Unlike most that are just filled with cheese, this is filled with a very well spice marinara sauce and served with marinara for dipping. The coconut pumpkin cake dessert was fine: moist and paired well with the granola/pumpkin seed topping but not overly sweet and milder flavor profile. I would be okay to skip it next time. They open at 5pm and fill up quickly so plan to get there before 6pm unless you want to wait. It's not huge so seating is a little limited Drinks you order at the bar on your way in. I came in with a group of five for happy hour right when they opened without a reservation and we were seated right away. No one else was there yet, so we avoided the different situation I saw other reviews mention where you need to order drinks at the front before you're seated. We wanted to do happy hour, and the happy hour menu did say cold items only, but I thought that meant that the cold items were the only things at a happy hour discount. I did not realize that you couldn't order any pasta over happy hour, so that was disappointing. I ended up getting the root vegetable salad, which I wasn't sure if I would love, but it was really good. The vegetables were all finally shredded and it was over a yummy sauce. My friends got the meat and cheese plate, which didn't appeal to me, but the focaccia looked delicious and I asked if I could order a side of that. They gave me three pieces of focaccia for two dollars, which I thought was very reasonable, and it was as delicious as it looked! I really did want the pasta but didn't have a lot of time, so as soon as the kitchen opened at five I ordered the dirty martini Bucatini and took a couple of bites and just took the rest home. I don't like blue cheese, so they substituted it for the cheese sauce that was on the root vegetable salad and I loved that. They wouldn't split checks for us, so we had to figure all that out ourselves, which I think ends up taking more time than if they just do it for you. read more

You know what I hate? I hate getting excited for a place and then it lets you down. You look at the menu online, you get pumped, and then something with the atmosphere, food, or service disappoints. Well, that did NOT happen for this place fortunately. And I was very excited to check the place out over the last few weeks. I am a pasta guy. Anyway, although we only dipped our toes in the pool (only did happy hour, and not pasta yet), I was extremely pleased with Visit #1 of many. Their happy hour is unique and quite a value. First of all, you have me at hello with any IPA for $6 at happy hour. You have me fully at hello when that IPA is a West Coast IPA in a 16-ounce draft glass. That is a DEAL for craft beer drinkers (and PLEASE don't take that off the happy hour menu). They also had other creative things on the happy hour menu. Mini martini, pasta water, spaghett style, the IPA, no double digits in price on a wine pour, oysters (both West Coast and East Coast before you ask), mixed nuts, a meat and cheese plate, two salads (I will never eat a salad at happy hour, so just know that for future review hopes), etc. We are bar seat people always, and Kristoff (forgive me if that spelling is incorrect) was our bartender who gave us efficient service, attentive answers to my many questions about the place, and just an overall pleasant demeanor. Perfect service. The wife got three oysters and we shared the meat and cheese plate. She said the oysters were awesome (I am not an oyster person and couldn't tell you good and bad on that front), and the meat and cheese plate was simple, yet effective. Their fig add was a syrup, which was a new twist, and FINALLY a meat and cheese plate has enough bread for the ornaments. Both were great values, and extremely tasty. We thought the place just happened to be next to another one of our favorite places, Odie B's, but it actually is the same owner and they share the kitchen space. Apparently, the art gallery closed, and the owner of Odie B's decided to put this former pop-up place in as brick and mortar. Glad they made that brilliant decision. Once I put that together and got the history, the background music made sense. We always loved Odie B's for its energy and random background music, and our visit got the same thing for our ears. Today, it sounded like a James Brown station with maximum variety modifier of that genre. Knowing Odie B's, I assume the next music choice during our visit will be something totally else, but still fun. It is a good sign when you are already checking out the menu for your next visit, and we did that. My wife has already claimed the Dirty Martini Bucatini (also recommended by Kristoff), and I will be engaging with the Smoked Duck item that was leadoff hitter on the pasta menu. Note that they also have seasonal menu changes and regular specials they post on IG. Although I admittedly have not had a pasta there yet and I am reviewing a pasta place (sort of ironic), I loved the vibe of this place already. We started off with cocktails from the menu and it is a hard pass from me. Not good - Although I liked the vibe, the seating was so uncomfortable- it was like sitting on Spirit or Jet Blue airlines. The bench seat was short - just keeping it real. You want to be comfy while eating. I would not come back based solely on the seating. We got the much talked about mozzarella sticks and I may be an outlier, but I did not like them. We also got a salad which was very cold - too cold, like hurt your teeth cold and here is the thing, a cold salad is delish, but when too cold it breaks down the lettuce and becomes mushy. We couldn't decide and ordered 3 pastas - had lots to take home and even ordered the single portions. The dirty martini bucatini was the star with the duck a close 2nd. The interior was simple and modern but slightly elegant, the staff were super nice. This place has a menu with not too many items which ti me is a good sign. All I can say is the pasta was amazing, the drinks were outstanding and the dessert (apple tart pie) was my favorite. 10/10 would recommend. read more
