Went on a Saturday evening, there was a few tables, no wait. The lady who seated us was not our server,she was dealing with the bbq tables. I had a bimmibap bowl with chicken and my companion had pork stirfry. They bring sides, kimchee, noodle salad, broccoli and a bean sprout salad. Dined here for a friends birthday dinner. We got 6 korean BBQ dishes. Total cost for only the BBQ(not including everything else we had) was about 150 dollars. It came out and there was enough meat to feed maybe a toddler. For 150 bucks you'd think there would be more meat especially for the chicken. 25-30 dollars for a couple ounces of chicken is insane. Overall the service and quality of the food isn't horrendous. But the skimping on the meat is absolutely outrageous. Ambience is cool I guess. I love Korean food and was excited to check out Baps recently. Their dining area is large and can accommodate groups for either grill your own KBBQ or just regular tables for other entrees. We decided to just get some entrees but we saw several groups enjoying the KBBQ. We were seated right away and immediately I noticed that our server was hustling, serving every table and greeting people at the door. She was awesome! I was happy to see that the menu at Baps had plenty of options, including several that I don't typically see at the Korean restaurants I frequent. Lots of soups and stews, as well as classic favorites like tteokbokki and bibimbap. We started with complimentary toasted barley tea and the gimmalyi, which are deep fried mini seaweed rolls. These have veggies and glass noodles inside and were really good. I didn't love the sauce they came with, but they were great even without it. I haven't seen these on many menus so it was fun to try them. It was tough to choose, but I went with the 육개장 yukgaejang (spicy beef brisket soup) as my entree, and Nate got the bibimbap with beef. We got a selection of banchan (side dishes) including kimchi, pickled radish, braised black beans, and cucumbers. You can ask for more of whatever banchan you'd like. The food was delicious. I do wish both dishes had more meat, but the flavors were there. The gochujang sauce was so good and added a lot of flavor to the bibimbap. It didn't have a lot of meat, but it was presented nicely and had lots of colorful veggies. The soup was a massive portion and the broth was savory, rich, and the perfect level of spicy. We left with full bellies and smiles on our faces. I will definitely be back to Baps in the future to try some more of their food! read more

KBBQ spot in East Lansing! You cook your own meat and they bring out a bunch of sides to share while you start to cook. The one downside was that they have you cook on a wax paper to limit the smoke in the restaurant since there are no fans above the cooking stoves. The meat was high quality and the side sauces/seasonings were great topped on the meat. The crispy chicken and seafood pancake also were also delicious and filled with flavor! read more

The servers were very knowledgeable and helpful as we were trying to decide on what to get. It was a little too much, since we were all 100% Korean and probably knew more about the menu than they did lol. But they were very friendly and very nice. Appreciated it. The guys shared the intestine hot pot, which would have served 4 guys well. Good portions, and pretty authentic. Though we've had better. A friend stone bowl bulgogi very much. Not too salty, and good as a soup almost, with plenty of mushrooms. I had the beef short rib soup. I asked for the noodles on the side, and was told that was not possible. But they were able to take it out completely. I'm assuming that they cook the noodles in the soup rather than separately and add it in. The dish was pretty standard. Overall, not bad. Looking at the portions and the cooking, I'd come back for hot pot or bbq, and feel like their Army Hot Pot or Tteokbokki Hot Pot would be pretty good. This is one of my friend and I's favorite spots to visit in East Lansing. We always go for the Korean BBQ and have never had to wait for a table. I have tried the pork belly in the past and it was pretty good, but the beef bulgogi is definitely my favorite. It comes with a bowl of purple rice, onions and squash for grilling, as well as a side of soy sauce. I always ask for the sesame oil in addition to the soy sauce. There are a wide variety of shareable sides, some fairly consistent and some that change depending on the day. The radishes and bean sprouts are my favorites. There is also lettuce that I like making wraps with. Someone came and changed the paper on our stove so it wouldn't burn, and even was so kind as to put the rest of our uncooked bulgogi and vegetables onto the stove for us and flip it when it was time to. Baps is a cool place. Modestly upscale, fun ambiance, and cheery, attentive staff. That's probably the best part. Slightly pricey for what you get. There are less expensive, equally tasty options in East Lansing. The quality and quantity of meat is just average. They also tack on additional charges for things like more lettuce (??) if you're wrapping your BBQ. Yet no upcharge for more rounds of banchan. It seemed odd to us. There is no easy street parking in this area of East Lansing, but you can use one of the nearby parking garages. read more

Service was outstanding and friendly! Very authentic Korean food, which is hard to find in the Midwest. We had the gimbap (don katsu, tuna, baps, and bulgogi) and they were all fantastic. The gimbap is huge! Very fresh ingredients. After we had the soondubu and kalbeetang.... All of it was on point! Everything is a tad on the spicy side but if you have Korean you need to expect that. read more

I come from an area with an abundance of Korean tofu soup and I was quite satisfied to find that the tofu soup at Baps was pretty on par. I got the beef tofu soup -- serving size was plenty as I could only finish half. There are actual larger beef pieces than I'm used to which I liked and plenty of tofu in the soup. There wasn't an option to choose the heat level but it had a kick to it which was much appreciated. It came with a side of purple rice as well! The banchan (side dishes) comprised of kimchi, black beans (this was new to me -- it was sweet with a hard texture, quite flavorful), bean sprouts, and macaroni salad. They let us know that we could refill the side dishes if we ran out! We also got the calamari to share but I would not get it again. The batter was not crunchy at all and it was overall not fried enough. The dipping sauce it came with was tasty though. Service was great! Our waitress was kind and checked on us to see if we were doing okay. read more

Our favorite Korean spot in east Lansing in terms of Korean bbq. The serving staff is super friendly. Their banchan is also probably my favorite and it changes up a little bit sometimes which is nice. Plenty of booths but gets a little busy sometimes in terms of noise but we've never had to wait for a table here. Would highly recommend! read more

Pretty good for Michigan, but not the best I've had in Michigan (check out Southfield). I was mindboggled by the parchment paper at first as I've never experienced that ANYWHERE before BUT samgyupsal (pork belly) does still get crispy on this! You just need to cook it for longer! We had a smattering of different foods as I was with adventurous eaters who hadn't really had korean food before! FYI - you can either do KBBQ or the Hot Pot/Stews, not both unfortunately! We had the: *banchan - lots of radishes type things but we were fans *tteokbokki - from the appetizers section! If you're spicy sensitive, watch out! this dish is super flavorful and packs a punch. It had rice cakes, fish cakes and instant noodles in it! *japchae - really flavorful and a pretty big portion! *Kimchi Jigae - I'm always a fan of the dish! Filled with spam, hot dog, instant noodles and kimchi. *For the KBBQ meats we had the: galbi (boneless short rib), samgyupsal (pork belly), bulgogi (marinated beef), and beef tongue! The bulgogi was really nicely marinated & flavorful. The beef tongue was frozen so you have to cook it for a bit on the grill then unroll it. The galbi was fine - a little tough. I appreciate that they gave Korean multigrain purple rice. They do upcharge $2 if you want more though! This spot could be a little intimidating for first timers as they don't really help to cook or come around all that often. read more

East Lansing has it's share of restaurants and certainly plenty of Asian spots. While visiting tax deductions two and three we decided to have Korean food. Baps is right downtown. And we had been once before with a large party. Baps always seems like a half hearted effort. It's understaffed, no liquor, banchan that's doled out with a tweezer and no exhaust fans (!?!?) so the chicken is cooked in a foil pan like a Swanson Mac and cheese! We had to wait for additional orders of...wait for it......rice. Yes rice. They had run out!? Despite a gaggle of help service is SLOW. It's as if they just opened that night, every night. 1) hardly find the beef in the soft tofu soup. the few pieces of small diced beef almost like ground beef are very tough 2) the portion of small dishes are 1/2 the size as in the pictures. I got takeout this past week and I thought it was very good. I asked if they could make my beef bulgoggi extra spicy and was told "I don't have control of the spice level" - which seemed a bit odd, but then they offered to include some spicy sauce which totally did the trick and it was quite spicy. The beef was of very good quality and quite tender - which is often not the case. I'd like to try a few more things and maybe dine in next time. Something leaked out of one of the takeout containers, but was luckily contained by the plastic bag that it was in but that could have been a disaster. read more

Loved it great service. The bingsu (Korean ice cream) is worth 6stars. I have had this stuff multiple times in Korea and this is the only place we have found it in the area. Think ice cream but made with angel feathers and fruit. Had the bbq marinated ribs and bbq bulgogi which was great. The side dishes (banchan )were tasty and varied they also refilled them often. Be sure and ask for lettuce leafs if that is your thing. The wife already wants to go back. read more

Every single time, I was greeted by friendly staff and only had about 15 minute wait. As a Korean, I can say that they have really good Yukgaejang! The taste and spice are perfect! They are incredibly short staffed and disorganized, the employees they did have are not trained and struggle with the tasks at hand. We waited to be seated for almost 30 minutes, and once seated we waited another 25 for them to take our order. The tables divided into booths are nice to keep you away from the other patrons, but we were seated near a screaming baby that clearly were with a family struggling with the same wait issues. The banchan was mediocre, they give you 4 per table and very sparsely filled. We really wanted water, but had to ask for it about 4 times. When we did get our food it was, good. The quality and flavors were good. The portions to cost ratio wasn't great, very small, but that seems to be the thing these days? We ordered the dokbokkei, bimbimbap with beef, and beef short rib soup. The soup had 4 pieces of bone in meat, for $13.50, the bimbimbap was $9.50, and the dokbokkei was $8.50. We had to go find the waitress for the bill and find her again to pay it. I wouldn't recommend coming here on a weekend night. read more

5 stars for the food, 0 stars for the service. Having lived in LA and Seoul, my expectations were frankly low for Baps. I was pleasantly surprised to find the menu had many of my beloved Korean dishes - dolsot bibimbap, seoullungtang, tteokguk manduguk. All of our food was delicious, kudos to the kitchen staff. However, the service was abysmal. We waited at least 15 minutes after being seated just to be greeted by our server, and our entire time in the restaurant was over 2 hours. Our side was delivered well into eating our main dish. I was there with my 14 month old, and was not offered a high chair, nor do I know if the restaurant has any. After all of these delays, we needed to pack up food to take home - a kid can only behave for so long in a restaurant. Well, we forgot the to-go bag on our table and returned only 10 minutes later to find out it was already discarded? All of the delays to actually bring us our food, and no consideration to wait a few minutes to see if we'd be back for the takeout we left. Nice. All in all, I'm not sure whether or not I'll return based on the poor service we had tonight. read more

Great little KBBQ spot by MSU's campus. We got the pork belly and bulgogi beef, and both were soo yummy. They came with lots of side dishes and it fed 2 people perfectly, we were happily full afterwards. The 3rd person in our party got a bibimbap bowl, which was also great. The service was also really good- there was only one person waiting AND hosting the night we went (a Friday night), and she really did a great job for how stressful that must've been. Coming from LA, which has the best Korean food outside of Korea.... some would say I'd have high expectations for the Korean food I try here in East Lansing. Let's just say Baps far exceeded my expectations and more!!!! Not only was the food delicious and super authentic, the owner and employees were the kindest and most passionate about serving delicious Korean food to their patrons. I was visiting East Lansing for a week, and after a couple of days in just eating American food, I was on the quest for some spicy soup and flavorful rice. The combo I got with the kimchi chiggae and the stone bimbimbap was PERFECT!! (Highly recommend this combo) The ambiance and decor is super modern and clean inside, and it was just overall a great experience. The owner, Young-Sam, cooks everything by hand and created every entree with love and passion. (You can literally taste it in every bite!!) Best pork belly I've had at a Korean BBQ joint! Unexpectedly soft texture that did not give the jaw a workout to eat. I can't believe I've been eating the wrong pork belly up until now. Tasted great with the accompanying sauces. The army stew's cheese noodles and broth were good, but it was overwhelming with spam and hotdog. Wish there was more noodles instead.
