a view of the bar and the televisions

For an early evening on a Saturday you would think the place would be dead... And you would be dead wrong when it is racing season. There is a ton going on and the place is hopping. Bar seats are nearly full and almost every table is taken and live racing isn't for another hour and a half. Cold beer, good food (stir fry). A little smoky but the ventilation system is doing it's job. Bartenders are hopping with little wait on refills. A healthy beer selection with local brews helps (Deep Ellum IPA is worth a try).

Nice racing book. They don't nickel and dime you as much as the track next door. It gets crowded in big race days.

From the beginning, our waitress had a terrible attitude. When I asked if they had non-alcoholic beer, her response was basically, "It's a bar... no." I then asked if they had juice instead of soda, and again she told me, "It's a bar, we don't have juice." That made no sense to me because bars normally carry different juices for mixed drinks. It wasn't even necessarily that they didn't have what I wanted--it was the dismissive attitude every time I asked a simple question. Then I asked about wings. She told me they only sell them in 6-piece orders, and if I wanted more, I had to order another 6-piece. I asked if they offered something like 6, 10, or 15 wings where the price per wing gets a little cheaper as you order more. She said no because their cooks have to separate every order into six pieces. The four of us own a restaurant, and we had never heard that explanation before, but okay. I also ordered nachos and politely asked her to tell the cook not to go crazy with the cheese because I only wanted a little. She told me she couldn't tell him that because she didn't want me complaining if I barely got any cheese. I specifically told her, "That's fine. I don't want that much cheese. Just please tell him a little bit of cheese." Even a simple food request somehow turned into an argument. I placed the food order around the beginning of the 5th round of the fight. The ENTIRE fight ended, and I still didn't have my food. When I finally saw her and asked for an update, instead of simply checking on it or apologizing for the wait, she told me, "You're waiting just like 30 other people." Again, completely unnecessary attitude. Then came the bill. My two items were $12 each, so I was expecting $24 plus tax. Instead, the payment reader showed $38.16. She seemed hesitant to show me the screen, and when I finally saw the charges, I noticed an additional $6 charge listed under some nickname/abbreviation I didn't recognize. I asked what it was. She repeated the name instead of explaining it, so I told her I still didn't know what that meant. She finally said it was gratuity. So now we're at $30 before tax, but somehow the total was $38.16. I knew the remaining amount wasn't simply sales tax, and by that point I was so tired of the attitude and the entire experience that I gave her $40 and left. The food finally came and was mid at best, but honestly, the food wasn't even the biggest problem. The lack of customer service and the waitress's attitude ruined the entire experience. If you're automatically adding gratuity, the least a customer should receive is decent service and a clear explanation of every charge on the bill. There are way too many places in Dallas with better food, better service, and employees who don't act irritated because a customer asks a question. I only came because my business partners wanted to watch the fight here. I normally watch boxing at home, and after this experience, that's exactly what I'll go back to doing. last time at Sportsbook in Bishop Arts.

It didn't taste much much like a margarita to me. I told the bartender I didn't like it very much and wanted something with a bit more flavor and color or something. She mixed up something else or have me a different flavor, but it still wasn't good. Maybe next time I'll inquire about their signature drinks if I go there again. It was a slow night, so we got our food and drinks pretty fast though. After that margarita disappointed, I decided to leave and go to another spot nearby to get drinks.

Recently, I had lunch here, and they now have a new farm to table menu that really exceeded my expectations. The Ranch has reinvented itself many times, and now it's a restaurant I would visit for the food AND atmosphere. My Overall Rating - 5 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - At its core, it's a bar with several indoor and outdoor dining areas with a country theme. The Ranch is so versatile that you can host a private event while people dine in the main area while others hang out at the bar. There's also a charming outdoor area that is nice if the weather is cool. Best of all - it's full of people and energy. 1 Star. Service - Our server was great. We explained the concept, went over the menu, and while a large table occupied his time, several of the staff were helpful. Everyone was dressed in Cowboy/Ranch gear. Texas Southern Hospitality is real. 1 Star. Food - My most recent visit was like visiting a new restaurant. The Ranch's menu has changed, and everything was new. I started with the pork belly appetizers, which was a great start to meal. The tender pork meat had a layer of sweet + salty belly that melts in your mouth. I went with the Barbacoa Grilled Cheese that was one of the best I've ever had. The barbacoa (shredded BBQ beef) was the star and was better than any brisket grilled cheese I've had. The sourdough was grilled with lots of butter, so after devouring the sandwich I had to wash my hands. 2 Stars. Will I Return? - Absolutely. I had been to The Ranch so many times I considered a place to gather for Happy Hour. Not anymore. The new menu is incredible, and I can't wait to return. 1 Star.

My guess is the overpriced menu items deliver what the atmosphere promises but the $30 deal is a value trap. The Ranch looks the part but the kitchen isn't backing it up at this price point. SAS Verdict: Not Approved. The Vaquero Shrimp alone can't carry the whole meal.

At first, we assumed it was just an off night, but it's happened several times with the same bartender. We've also noticed that the male bartender seems much more attentive and friendly toward other guests, particularly a group of women seated next to us, which made the difference in service even more noticeable. Despite these experiences, we've continued to tip 20% because the food is always great, and we've never sent anything back. We genuinely enjoy this restaurant and want to keep coming back.
