Not a bad place at all. Unique feel to it with all the outside space and different bars. They have the "beat the clock" tuesdays which fills up with college kids. Sundays are also fun here but my bar of choice is djais. Definitely a cool place to grab a drink though. read more

Please don't even waste your time going here. The 25 cent drinks draw HUGE crowds of people. The lines were so long and we waited 30 minutes just to get turned away at the door like so many others we saw before us. I was with family when I went and both of my cousins went up at the same time to separate bouncers. One of my cousins had a passport and they asked if she had a driver's license. She said no so they literally shoved her out onto the sidewalk. My other cousin only had a driver's license and they asked him for a passport! They wouldn't let him in either. There's absolutely no rules, it's all up to the bouncers' discretion. Not only was it unfair to turn away so many people for no valid reason, but they were super rude and aggressive. I was made fun of by some young guy (young 20s) for being short and didn't believe I was 21 because of my height. I showed 3 forms of id. It was very humiliating and cannot believe they would allow workers to behave like this. I called to complain and a woman answered and said "I'm sure he never made fun of you" and then hung up. I cannot begin to explain how unpleasant an experience I had at this establishment. I have a valid New Jersey ID and am 24 years old. I recently lost my ID and got a new one from the DMV. little did I know that Bar Anticipation wouldn't let me in because my new license didn't show the proper symbols under a black light. I have never had this problem before as this is a valid ID. The bouncers were very rude and would not help us in any form. They told us that we could show a passport ID but who carries a passport with them at all times? They wouldn't even let us stand under a shelter when it was pouring rain so that we could look for a picture of a passport. We expected way more from this place and are extremely disappointed by this. We will never be coming back. read more

I went to Bar A today with my family for the Easter Egg Hunt. What uncontrolled chaos. Whoever organized the event failed to divide the children into age groups or set an egg limit. Parents weren't stopped from participating against small children. The result was eggs were grabbed away from the younger children. With no control over the crowd, some kids had 35+ eggs and others left crying leaving with no eggs. The venue offered a complimentary buffet for the children. The Easter Bunny wasn't arriving until 2:30, several hours after the event began. We bought a drink, had lunch and left. There was nothing planned for the kids to do after the egg hunt. Most people, including my family left without waiting for the Bunny. read more

Our group was visiting from out of town and one woman in our party showed her valid US passport as identification at the door. They turned her down for not having a state issued license. When questioned further about this policy (that I have NEVER seen before), they kicked her out. It is unimaginable that one of the most legitimate forms of identification (an American passport) would not be accepted at an American establishment. What a joke!! They were fine letting in the 18 year olds behind us with fake IDs in. It was dead anyway, so no loss on our part. I went to this bar expecting to have a good time. I see a lot of reviews saying they're homophobic and racist. Which wouldn't shock me. But coming from a white male, I was kicked out probably after 30 minutes, and when I asked why they didn't give me an answer. "You don't need to know that" was there answer. Literally did nothing wrong but whatever. Maybe it was because I didn't buy a drink or because of my shoes? A nice cherry on top is when me and my friends arrived, right away 2 cops approached us and gave my friend a 300 ticket for having an empty beer bottle. Went to this bar with a group of friends and it was a great time all night until the end. until a friend of mine went to the bathroom. the bathroom attendant was selling cigarettes and my friend bought one. the bathroom attendant lit it for him two separate times in the bathroom and he walked out of the bathroom. he was then carried out by 5 bouncers saying he should've known they can't smoke cigs at the bar. He apologized a million times and said he didn't know and would finish it outside. the bouncers said that was fine so he finished it outside. just as he was finishing it outside and chatting with the bouncers some random man came over with a walkie talkie and said he was an idiot and should've know the laws of new jersey and said he needed to remove himself from the property to finish his cigarette. meanwhile multiple bouncers and staff were smoking cigarettes on the premises and near the exits (as he was). horrible horrible horrible management who was completely unreasonable and trying to pick a fight with a non confrontational person/group! sad to see such a great bar being run by horrible people read more

Well, it was a different friends birthday so we went back, AND IT STILL SUCKED. Its crowded to the point of being a fire hazard, you can't get to the bar to get soda / water even if you wanted to (I DDed), and everyone involved was nasty. I am writing this review as a local who totally enjoys eating here on weekdays. First of all kudos to Janet our most adored waitress who is always smiling, kind, and always gets your order right! (Even when you ask for little change up's) Next a shout out to Heather the bartender. Again, she is always delightful, remembers everyone by name, is attentive, quick, pours a great drink and we enjoy hanging at the bar visiting with them both. Our group primarily goes for the blue plate specials they serve daily. A different one each day Monday through Friday. Not everyone knows about it, but once you find out you will become a regular too. The boys LOVE Thursday pork chops with mashed potatoes, gravy and yummy sautéed veggies. For me personally, the chef makes the most superb Salmon francese'. It is not always on the menu, it is a special but when he is cooking it, I am heading there for lunch! Sometimes he makes it with red peppers and sometimes with tomatoes, also has artichokes, and the sauce is just fabulous! Usually with mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach. Extremely delicious, better than any 5 star high end place that charges $35 bucks for such a great plate of food. He also makes a mean burger, and wonderful salads that have a lot of choices and flavors. Friend A, friend B, and I (all of us years past the age of 21) showed up ready to have a good time. Friend A gets in no problem. I get in no problem. Friend B is told she needs a backup because her ID is a duplicate. Turns out a credit card and debit card in the same name isn't enough to prove she is who she says she is-- photo ID only. Oh, so a college ID from years ago works better than a functioning credit card? Okay, you unreasonable a-holes, fine. Myself and Friend A demand our cover back and hopped in a cab to pick up a second photo ID for Friend B. So here we are again, 25 minutes later. Friend A, again, gets in no problem. Friend B gets in with her outdated "back up". And I get denied... --"Excuse me, [douche bag], I was just here 20 minutes ago and got in no problem. What's the deal?" --"Oh, well your ID is a duplicate." --"I was here 20 minutes ago..." And yes my ID is a duplicate. I've gotten my wallet stolen before, how is that any business of yours?? "Excuse me, bouncer who let me in 20 minutes ago, can you tell this guy I'm good to go??" --"Well if he found something I missed, that's just how it goes" Oh, so you're all just a bunch of mindless jerks?? At this point hopping in a cab and coming back to this place AGAIN with another form of picture ID, my birth certificate, my SS card, and the President's seal of approval is NOT happening. What's more likely is for me to come with torches and tear the place to shreds. I decide to compose myself for a second and speak to the manager. I look him in the eyes and tell him that I understand he deals with a bunch of drunk idiots on the regular, and I understand that he's running a business here, but can he for a minutes listen to me as a human being? Can he understand that I just cabbed there, cabbed back to our room, and cabbed back to the bar only to be told I can't get in? At this point I've lost interest in even going inside, but sir, can you just acknowledge the absurdity of this situation here?! Nope. Nothing. This place deserves a negative rating. I was astounded by how unprofessional the staff was. I went with a group of about 10 people and my friend was not allowed in because she had a state issued ID instead of a license. We asked if they could scan her ID, since that's what they did for one of our other friends, but they refused and just kept saying she wasn't allowed in. They were also extremely rude towards all of us, basically laughing at my friend as she cried after they humiliated her. This could of course be a coincidence, but it seems strange that out of a group of all white people, the one black girl is the one who was denied entry. There was absolutely no reason for them to scan one ID and refuse to scan another one. We later called up, asking to speak to a manager to find out what their qualifications were for entering the bar. The woman on the phone was extremely rude and hung up. When we called back, they had one of their Spanish speaking employees pick up since they knew it was us. If you want to go to a bar with racist bouncers who laugh at patrons after humiliating them, this is the place to go. I have been told for years by friends that Bar A is the place to be. My boyfriend and I came to Belmar Beach for the first time today and I just knew we had to try it. Surprisingly, I was very happy to elude a huge party scene and actually enjoy a quiet and more lax night. Our bartender, Allie, was sensational. Great conversation, she hustled and made our small vacation so much more enjoyable. She was our first true encounter with a local that was memorable. My boyfriend and I both work in the industry, me being a restaurant manager and I wish I had more staff members as personable, attentative and awesome as her. She was wonderful. I'm a former VIP Bar Anticipation card holder of 5 years, and shit has hit the fan at this once trendy Jersey shore beach bar. It's taken a complete nose dive from the time of Maverick and Goose... Goose is dead at this place, and Maverick has no swager unless you count hundreds of dudes grinding on eachother swager. If you are a girl, I would run like you were in Spain and they just released the bulls; because that's pretty much what your experience may be like . If you dare to enter, you'll be welcomed by a sea of dudes who think talking to women is like the the last 2 minutes in the NBA finals with a full court press until you either step out of bounds or turn over the ball. Bar Anticipation use to be a place that was a great time with a liberal diversity between men and women. Now it's a place where women run and hide under heat latter's or to the rich duche bags that rent a cabana. It's no longer the average Joe spot. It's fallen like the small 1200 square foot homes that Belmar use to have and that the current residents would call litter and decay. Bar A is more l Ike Bar B and has attempted to adapt with the times, but has failed like Seattle on the two yard line in the 2015 superbowl. It's so close you can smell it, but that's as close as it gets. Give everyone their $15 cover back, because they just paid for disappointment. This is a personal experience. Raciest. Kicked me out for absolutely no reason, and refuse to explain why I was getting kicked out. Went this past Tuesday night to meet up with three friends. I was told at the door I wasn't allowed to wear my wool winter beanie/hat as per the dress policy(even though it's winter). Fine, I guess, but once inside I saw a minimum of 3 people wearing them and 4 people wearing baseball hats, 1 of which was turned sideways. Bigotry I assumed. But, I'm white so it was weird. So my restaurant manager friend asked a bouncer what the deal was, and he said the guy at the door is in charge and he decides on the rules, but ultimately couldn't explain why the others were allowed to wear theirs. This is the most poorly managed bar I have ever experienced. The way they check IDs basically encourages an underaged crowd and filters out anyone over the age of 22. First time coming here I was denied entry because I didn't have another photo ID to back up my out of state license (I graduated 2 years ago, theres no reason for me to hold onto an old school ID, and my work doesn't have picture IDs). The bouncer looked at the ID, told me that he could clearly tell that it was a real license, and that it was also obvious that it was me in the picture. I showed him multiple unexpired credit cards, insurance cards, but without any other picture ID he wouldn't let me in. There was also a 26 year old girl who was denied entry for not having back up either. Meanwhile, I overheard a number of girls ahead of me in line talking about their fake IDs and how they were nervous about getting in. They showed their fakes and "back up" and all of them got into the bar. For that alone this place deserves to be reported to the ABC (http://www.nj.gov/oag/abc/index.html .. just in case you witnessed the same and want to file a complaint as well). Aside from getting bigger with multiple indoor and outdoor bars, beach volleyball courts and added bathrooms (which still are not enough when the place is packed) the biggest thing we noticed was the food was great (definitely not the hotdogs, frozen burgers and chicken nuggets the served here when I was in college) AND THE SODA WAS F-ING HORRIBLE, definitely not real coke. The burgers were excellent, large and not from frozen, the chili (while too bland for my taste) had a lot of cheese and meat and the grilled chicken nachos were very good... did I mention how bad the soda was, cause it was bad...... and shockingly the prices were not outrageous like you would expect at a shore bar. I have been here twice and both times I came via party bus. Bar A is pretty big which is nice but it can sometimes get crowded and finding a seat can be a hassle. However, the I never had to wait for an obscene amount of time to order a drink. The drinks are priced ok but I usually play the shot wheel. The music varies, and the dance floor is packed to the point all you can do is really sway back and forth like the drunk people next to you. The guido and creeper crowds are always there like any other place in NJ. The last time I went, I don't remember seeing many girls except for the ones who were drunk dancing on the platform like hot messes. This probably would be a good local place, but unless you have a "party posse" this place could be the worst. read more

I've been here multiple times and never felt the need to share my experience until now. I went on a Tuesday for the beat the clock specials. I went with a friend who's never been to Beat the Clock because it conflicts with her work schedule. We waited on line for well over a half hour just to get denied at the front. My friend was not let in just because of her duplicate ID. Her wallet was stolen out of her car and she had lost everything. She had her debit card, social security card and a Costco ID card with her as well but apparently that wasn't enough. Who would have thought a 22 year old would be denied for being legal age where as college freshmen get in with fakes all the time? The staff and bouncers were extremely rude and humiliated us in front of a thousand people. I understand double checking on out of state licenses or if the license would not scan, however it is beyond ridiculous that we were unable to get in WITH OUR REAL 22 YEAR OLD ID. Quintessential Jersey Shore hangout. If you're here, you've got to at least pop in to see what all the buzz is about! Honestly, it is not my type of place but all my friends go, peer pressure, yadda-yadda. Bar A is a giant compound with four or five large bars, tables and chairs, a brand new grotto set next do a sandy oasis with cabanas. Cabanas run for 500 dollars per night and include one bottle of liquor. Each additional bottle is extra. This is GREAT if you're coming with a large group of friends for a special occasion because in the end, it may work out to be cheaper than buying drinks PLUS you get your own private and, fine, I admit it... kind of COOL space. Reasonably priced drinks and the "famous" Tuesday 'beat the clock' (no cover before 8pm and 50 cent beers that increase in price every hour) make this place a very popular spot in Belmar, NJ. They do serve food, most notably a large selection of creative but mediocre tasting burgers. It's not a bad bet if you don't want to venture out. Dress code is beachy-casual although many girls show up in their Bebe miniskirts, strappy Payless stilettos and faux-gold hoochie hoops. I like to arrive early to observe what I refer to as the "Parade of Skanks." It's better (and more cost effective) than visiting a zoo. read more

As I've gone to Bar A for more years than I publicly admit, I'll touch on many aspects that I've come to know over time and become an expert on in my eyes (okay, I'll exclude alcohol, believe it or not, I'm the non-drinking face of Bar A, odd, I know!) 1) As for the staff... from Johnny Bee to Tim and his security team to the bouncers, they do the best job of any bar I've seen. I've been to Tiki, Jenk's, Headliner, Laguna in Brigantine, Water's Edge, Donovan's, and Bar A stands high & above all others in terms of professionalism and class. (which is ZERO against any other shore spots, I've seen it all in every spot, and Bar A is run tightly, but run well as it's run tightly) Though I will admit, I did have 1 issue with a bouncer in '16 & his lack of class and courtesy & attitude wasn't appreciated, he was new, and didn't return. I have known the bartenders from Marisa to Caroline to Melissa and I do not play favorites, I am simply honest, this staff works hard from May-September from 5-2am on painful toes while being hit on all night while being MOBBED with drinkers with little time to breathe on summer nights, and their quality shows as there's a reason why they've been listed as one of the top 50 sports bars in America on a few occasions. You always get courtesy, respect, and a smile. 2) As for 'being carded to death' upon entry... there's a reason for it. If a 20 year old got in, and drank, and say was intoxicated and did anything stupid upon leaving... as the place who served them, they're liable as well in the matter, so they have to be extra sure who's getting in. As for 2 IDs though, it's nothing new guys, it's been a thing at many shore clubs FOR YEARS. Oh and as far as police presence... seriously if you saw what those bouncers went through and the fights they broke up, people they tossed out, and what the officers then got to deal with, I assure you, you wouldn't be questioning why you're walking out to the Belmar boys in blue. 3) I remember a story on the news, i believe a bunch of friends went to DJais down the road on Ocean Ave. and was served after a while and took the tip out on the server thereby screwing her on money because she was backed up with customers. Well I've experienced both, quick service and a bill (a month ago) and the opposite when it's near 7/4 and slammed and i ordered, WAITED, ate, WAITED FOR MY BILL, and WAITED for my receipt to be on my way. Was I happy? No, but it's like expecting to get your car back from service in under 90 minutes on a Saturday at a dealership, it's summer, there's MANY people, it's par for the course. I hated standing waiting for my c.c. back to go about my business, but it's not exactly your local dump where it's done in 16 seconds and you can go back to your friends in a crowd of 23. 4) As for food, in many places you get your typical bar food, but credit to where it's due, they serve excellent food, and as someone who's had their buffalo chicken wrap on many occasions & the chicken caesar wrap last month, 2 thumbs up & I fully endorse and recommend the Mahogany Room. 5) As for skin color, I've been there for Halloween, Memorial Day weekend, Labor Day, hell even New Year's and in January just after, and there's been people of both genders shaking their a$$es that were white, black, Asian, Indian, I think i even saw Marvin the Martian once, but no one is ever carded or treated differently or ever has felt like there has been an issue of skin color or profiling (and if you have, that's on YOU). If you look at my reviews, i just don't hand out 5 star reviews, but I've gone to this place long enough and seen Big Bang Baby, The Even Horizon, Changing Lanes, Evolution X, and more on Summer Bash, Spring Bash, and many Halloween celebrations to know there's a reason why they wait outside in lines reaching up 16th. It's because of Bacardi Artie, Funsize, Billy Reybert, Kirk Lopez, possibly even Dave and Rob & their DJ team, but when a place is run well, success comes, and it shows in their numbers on every level year after year. I don't receive a dime in all of this, I am simply honest as I've made many memories here (plus as someone who doesn't drink, they're all firmly in mind, 0 haze) :) but I assure you, if you want to believe the silliness in other reviews, it's your loss, but as someone who goes alone, but never spends his nights alone because he's always surrounded by friends there, I assure you, listen to someone who knows what he's speaking of, take a drive (just be prepared to be in a mob of club-goers depending on the night), you'll be glad you did. Be prepared to enjoy some excellent music, take a few pictures by their grotto, possibly some with their summertime mermaids, squirt some duckies to win big on summer Sundays, and make some memories, because as you look back on the madness the next day, you'll only end up planning your next night there. read more

Don't go to bar A ever I'm a 23 year old who graduated college in 2015. I was sober and was trying to get in at 6:30 PM on a Saturday. I gave the bouncer my NJ license and credit card and debit card -- because I didn't have a second photo ID, I was rejected. I offered to show my Facebook and Instagram and they would not accept it. The bouncer's reasoning was that my license "changed". I have NJ license that expires in 2018. I asked how it changed and what he meant because I didn't understand and he wouldn't explain and he grabbed my arm to escort me out. Came with 8 friends and was very excited to enjoy the bar. 7 of us had drivers license and 1 had a passport. They would not let our 26 year old friend in because he had a passport. We all had to leave because they do not accept passports. There were even police outside who looked at his passport and said that it's obviously him but nothing they could do. Makes no sense at all. You can travel the world with a passport but you can't walk into bar anticipation. read more

Anticipate this: A. Lots of outdoor space and huge multiple bars, which is a plus when around 2,000 scantily-clad beach-goers arrive B. Daytime drinking, ahem, binge drinking while attempting to play volleyball (yep, sand volleyball court within premises) C. Always college specials on tap...there's like an 'alumni day' for different colleges throughout the summer D. Tons of people to mingle with, some savory and some...just dirty (that's a compliment) E. A mini club (with a mini dance floor and a DJ) whose composition is much different from the crowd at the outside bars F. Free buffet (and I do mean buffet) at happy hour...like lots of options, not just wings and pasta I will hit again so I can piss off the locals for the 6th consecutive summer. read more
