I know a lot of reviewers thought this place was dirty, but I found the building and decor charming. I noticed nothing that could have been construed as unsanitary, so I am not sure what people were afraid of. This place has definitely been around for awhile and had the feel of a fifties diner, but with a somewhat different menu. The servers were definitely nice and attentive, and the food was decent. My friend had the chicken, which she found very good, while I had BBQ ribs, which I made a mess out of, but were also tasty. I do wish they had sides other than french fries, which I do not find satisfying with BBQ. However, that was my only complaint about the food. Ok, actually, the pie we took home for dessert was abit disappointing. The price was reasonable. PLEASE DO NOT GO. Drive 30 more minutes north and go somewhere in Turlock. I had a plate that comes with ham, beef bbq, pork ribs with side of slaw and french fries. Beef bbq was grilled flap meat and I could grill probably better. Pork ribs were okay but hard meat. Ham - at this point I had no doubt that they buy pre-made everything and warm up. This place is a dive in a very under-served area of Downtown Merced (yes they have a downtown district). This place is so much of a dive that I almost came in wearing scuba gear :) While this wouldn't have been my first choice, the father-in-law suggested it as we needed to take care of some business and this was a good halfway point between the bay area and Fresno where he's from. It's apparently famous for it's BBQ goodies and especially the family platters which a very large family (in girth and number) were enjoying nearby. I think I opted though for a burger of the patty melt variety which was very good (knock me over with a feather!). We were in town for the weekend, and some friends told us that this place had the best ribs in town, so we had to try it. My lady had actually never had ribs in her life. How you get to be a grown woman without having ribs, I don't know, but this was a great place to get her started. She got the beef ribs and chicken combo, and loved it. Nice and meaty, with a great sauce. I had a rack of pork ribs, same thing. We needed a place for breakfast the next morning, so why mess with a good thing, right? Breakfast was also very good. I had the chicken fried steak. Perfect. I got the biscuit to go with it, and it was a very good biscuit, made fresh each morning. The staff is very friendly, and you'll see the owner roaming the dining room on a regular basis, making sure everyone is happy. I like that. Lots of regulars, since most people there seemed to know each other. If a place has lots of return customers, you know it's good. read more

Today's labor day, I bought 2 takeout family barbeque meals (ribs). One from Bar B Q Pit, Merced, CA and one from Applebees Atwater, CA. I will not be going back to Applebees. The ribs were really tough, they didn't put the salad or the mac&cheese in the bag, their web site menu is not the same as the store menu, the web site said that I did not have a valid address, so I had to call, they put me on hold for so long that the automated system redialed the store, when they answered, they wanted to place me on hold again. Their barbeque sauce wasn't bad. As for the Bar B Q Pit, their customer service depends on whether they like you. As for their pork spareribs, if I find better in NorCal, I'll make another post. For now, they're pork spareribs are the best in NorCal, 'nuff said. read more

This place has lost quality. Our hash browns tasted like they were cooked in old rancid oil. It needs to be changed more frequently. My biggest complaint is with the bathrooms. Worst place as far as bbq or smoked. Grilled snapper is a fried fillet ( long johns silver makes a better fillet) . The water had a strong taste which it shouldn't Ham was a slice from walmart it seemed the chicken did not taste smoked at all the ribs were very dry they were smothered in bbq sauce to cover how dry they were along with the chicken their rice pilaf had a crunchy shell it was a bad experience I had been their before but I thought I'd give them another shot they did not redeem themselves never going again or recommend this awful place and I won't say anything about their seating areas read more

Came here bc we saw a lot of cars parked in the lot outside. Great home town kinda feel with plenty of places to sit. Everything is made fresh and cooked daily. My dad, who went to culinary school, was very impressed with all their meats because they're all slow smoked first. We got the sampler plate that has a bit of everything on it. I didn't care for the ham or the roast beef really, but their chicken and spare ribs are really good. And their sauce is nice, sweet, and sticky, the way barbecue should be! Skip the mashed potatoes. The revamp the original owners did after buying it back from the new owners was certainly very needed as the old interior was tired and kind of depressing, now it's bright and welcoming. Unfortunately, the owners did away with the plate I always got so I have to order a different one and make adjustments. I wish they would just let you pick your own meat or meats for X price depending how many you got rather than deciding the combinations for you and then forcing adjustments. The BBQ recipe has changed and it's not as good as the previous one but it's still okay. Kind of pricey and they never have a kid's discount night, which is what always brings me into a restaurant. read more

Meat was bleeding a little when my bf asked for medium well. -asked to cook a little more, they brought out another replacement but parts of it were still very red and undercooked. Buttered toast was burnt from both sides. Fries tasted like from frozen bag, warmed up, then seasoned with uncooked seasoning on top -tasted really bad. Not my day! But I sent my son here for the family special of ribs and $30. He returns with $35 of food that I did not want! I tried calling them ahead of time but the phone was out of order, had it of worked I would of found out they do not do ribs anymore. He chose the tri tip! During covid-19 we have ordered takeout from bbq our more than a handful of times. The food is always good and ready within 15 minutes from the time we call. You also can't beat their prices. The people taking orders always seem grateful for your business. They have donated back to the community during this time as well by providing meals for essential workers and seniors for free. Worst barbeque! That's not barbeque at all its boiled meat smothered with bbq sauce. We ordered baby back ribs and chicken. Chicken is raw, still pink with blood and I call a staff and showed her the chicken. She took it to kitchen after a few minutes she came back and said that it is not raw "its just the smoke that makes it pink" -but how about the blood on the meat and bones? And they still charged me although I did not take the chicken when she return it and the other piece I did not touch. Customer service is so poor. Would not recommend. After having driven by this diner a number of times, my husband and I decided to try lunch here. I have to say I wasn't impressed at all. We both ordered the pulled pork sandwich with cole slaw. The pork meat was dry and burned, and the cole slaw tastes like it's right out of a jar. My mother ordered the tri-tip lunch, and the sliced meat was so fatty she could barely eat it. The french fries are frozen, were burned, and were cold. There was really nothing that said 'homestyle BBQ' about any of the food. There is a stack of chopped wood outside, perhaps for smoking. But judging by the taste of the meat, it would seem the wood is just for show. This diner would do much better if they started making their own food from scratch instead of buying prepared (more expensive) stuff. Unless something changes, we will not return. read more

i randomly drove by here the other day and decided to eat here because i was hungry. go figure. i thought this place would be like the hickory pit in campbell, where they just have a bunch of ribs with a ton of sides. instead, they had a ton of things: ribs, chicken sandwiches, burgers, et cetera, just slathered with BBQ sauce. i ordered the merchant's meal, which is your choice of meat with fries, cole slaw, garlic bread, and fried beans. it costs about $8.25, and they only give you like two ribs if you get the pork ones, seemed like a little more with the baby back, but i'm not really into those. i also got the beer-battered onion rings. i have to get onion rings when i hear that they're beer-battered... there's just something different about them, but anyways, these are probably the best beer-battered onion rings i've ever had! they're service is really friendly and they always check up on you to see how you're doing. i think the owner came out a few times as well to ask us how the food was, etc. they serve COKE here, which is always a definitely plus, AND there's FREE refills... so i had my hypoglycemic fix before heading back to campbell. good little place in the middle of nowhere. read more
