I wish there was an option to give half stars because while this place isn't quite a 4 star, 3 feels like undercutting them. We ordered the family pack out, delivery was fast, price was reasonable for the amount of food. I guess I should qualify that I'm fussy about BBQ because I grew up in Memphis. The brisket was good (We'll come back likely on the strength of the brisket alone), the pulled pork was pretty much what you'd expect for pulled pork, pretty decent, but not knock your socks off (made a good egg sandwich with it the following morning though, so it reheats well). The sides weren't bad, but they were kinda generic feeling. Lacking the something that makes a good bbq spot really shine. I wasn't terribly fond of the rolls, they're on the dry side. The gallon of tea came warm. Overall: Not bad, decent brisket. Solid spot but it's missing that little extra oomph that would make it stand out. read more

They have befuddled 3 orders in a row!! I cannot trust them to even do fries correctly any more!! Their staff is undertrained, ineffective, and more within their phones than customer care and ensuring the food is done properly. I called in orders a year ago+ (SEVERAL TIMES), and it was absolutely spectacular!! Not even close to the staff they have now to what they have had then. I WILL NOT BE BACK!!! It was dingy and now it is more of a cute little family diner. The service is ALWAYS friendly and food delivered quickly. Their coffee is the only thing that I have to complain about. From our groups meals we would suggest the pulled pork sandwich (on lunch menu but will serve at dinner), the bbq beef & chicken both, the rolls, & the cole slaw. I ordered spare ribs and the first Rib was good, but the second and third spare rib the meat was too tough. It also took a little while to receive our food. I have in all fairness only eaten breakfast here. So BBQ I have no idea. I love BBQ and will drive out of my way for great BBQ. If that tells you anything. Red and white, that's the decor color choice, coka-cola proud here. It's a diner, it's got a breakfast bar, it's got your menu options typical for the area. It's got locals coming and going. When you walk into the door of this restaurant and look at the decor, you start to realize that the food will taste exactly the way you think it will. There are classic car photos all over the walls and the interior is designed like a 50s diner. The servers are young and fairly efficient with minimal fuss and they did their job with no-frills, so that's nothing to complain about. Where things got bad is the food. I ordered the baby back ribs and chicken breast combo with a baked potato. It came out about five minutes later. The garlic bread is Texas toast slathered in vegetable spread with no noticeable garlic and tastes like soggy cardboard with a little char. The beans were under cooked and slightly crunchy and were mixed with ground beef that was flavorless and fatty. The corn on the cob was soggy and did not have any crunch and was served with the ever-present vegetable spread on the side. It's hard to make corn taste bad but they managed. The chicken breast was pounded flat and was fairly large but was cooked so dryly and overdone, that I was looking for anything to make it edible. This included the barbecue sauce that was on top which is not barbecue sauce at all. It is thin tomato paste with sugar added. There is no Tang, there is no taste...except for sweet tomato purée from a can. The baby back ribs were the worst part of the plate. This is saying something after the disaster I've already mentioned. The ribs were obviously cooked fast with some smoke but there was no slow cooking method, which was obvious, because the fat would ooze and drip when they were handled. I've seen this many times before. It's a high heat cooking method that ensures the meat is cooked but tough and fatty. No amount of horrible barbecue sauce provided could cover up the flavor and texture. This was the third time I've eaten at this restaurant as the other two have been 10 years ago and six years ago respectively. The food was just as bad then as it was today, which means that they have consistently survived by serving really poor food. The customer's average age is over 50 which explains that this place is surviving off its (former) reputation and loyalty from persons whose taste buds have gone south. You'll read glowing reviews from people who have eaten here for breakfast or lunch or dinner and I can only say that they don't know what good food is or they've been tricked by such poor service for such a long time that they've just excepted it. You don't have to! Find other place to eat because your hard-earned dollars deserve more. read more

I went here for dinner looking forward to some BBQ. So disappointed.....the ham is truly sliced sandwich ham (like Oscar mayer), the rib was tough, and the beef was sliced. I don't think any of the meat is fresh, but probably frozen. Not even sure if it is smoke there. It seemed like the meat is cook or boiled with BBQ sauce smothered on it. The dinner roll seemed made fresh as it seemed a bit "yeasty", The waitress was really nice and attentive, but the food was not very good. 1st... ordered 81$ worth of food and was told we couldn't eat there because family packs were strictly to go... I didn't realize that take-out meant take-out only... just FYI incase yall order that..2nd the lady who took our order was nice. There was a longer than quoted wait time... 10-15 min vs the actual 30 minute wait...but that was ok. The 2 stars are for the sauce on the chicken that was good. The chicken was all extremely dry inedible. The tri-tip was very very chewy...as if it was microwaved. The sauce for the tri-tip was decent. NOT BBQ!!! Just warning those travelers who have a craving for good BBQ. I was traveling back home from coaching in Stockton this weekend and had a craving for BBQ. I saw the name of this place and decent star rating on Yelp, so I went for it. The service was friendly, so they don't get one star, but the food............ Ok so the food.....................:( Who likes TV dinners? The best part was that they had Coke products! The garlic bread was good. I got the "famous spare ribs" let me start with this, I made a huge mistake while walking in, I didn't smell smoke! I immediately should have turned around, what good BBQ place doesn't have the smoker smell? So the ribs had no real smoke flavor, no smoke ring near the bark. While we're talking about the bark, bare minimum seasoning. Uhhhhhh and the sauce was just ok. I felt bad for the pig, these ribs did not do him justice. I also got the mash potato's which tasted like they came from a box not a potato. In the end I spent 18 dollars on a dinner that tasted like a 3 dollar TV dinner. If your looking for BBQ keep driving. BUT it does seem like a decent diner, and other reviews seem to think the burgers are good. But I wouldn't recommend going here. read more

Due to the lack of, well, anything food wise in Merced, we decided to try it as we both are Tri-Tip fans. My BF had a meal which was BBQ w/Babyback Ribs, then he got a side of the Tri-Tip for us to share/take home to make sandwiches with later. But for $40 total... that is a sad thing to get excited about. His chicken was bland & super dry. The ribs weren't exactly babybacks, like 3 regular ribs - my family is from the South, I know ribs & I know babyback ribs. He said they were 'ok'. As was the Tri-tip... (which was much improved when I doctored it all up at home in sandwiches for us that night). My prime rib was LITERALLY 50% FAT. I'm not talking about a decent marbeling which all good cuts of meat need to have good flavor/tendernesst. I mean, 50% of the meat I was served was huge area's of fat. MINIMUM 50% of it. I'm not exactly sure how a cook or a server would be comfortable serving a cut of meat that was majority fat.... I gave them 2 stars ONLY because we liked our server & it was clean. However for the entire restaurant, there was only one poor girl working all the tables. Came here once with family and not exactly what I expected. Seems like a lot of regulars come here but if you are expecting authentic BBQ, you will be disappointed. Didn't go to the restaurant. They catered my wedding reception instead. Had Tri-Tip, BBQ chicken, Spanish Rice, Beans, Salad and Rolls. The Tri-Tip had no sauce, which was confusing to me as I come a from a tradition where barbecue must come with sauce, or at least Carolina mustard. However the meat itself was well smoked and quite tasty. The BBQ Chicken came with sauce, but was a little too heavy on the cayenne (taste not heat) for me. The Spanish Rice was excellent. Mild and flavorful. The rolls were clearly made in-house and very good. The salad left much to be desired. It looked like cheap bag salad that had been allowed to sit too long. Service was pretty bad as well. After the guests did the first pass through the line, the servers disappeared and the food was covered up like it was prepared for transcontinental shipping. Additionally, the leftovers were removed without consulting the family about what was to be done with them. I know a lot of reviewers thought this place was dirty, but I found the building and decor charming. I noticed nothing that could have been construed as unsanitary, so I am not sure what people were afraid of. This place has definitely been around for awhile and had the feel of a fifties diner, but with a somewhat different menu. The servers were definitely nice and attentive, and the food was decent. My friend had the chicken, which she found very good, while I had BBQ ribs, which I made a mess out of, but were also tasty. I do wish they had sides other than french fries, which I do not find satisfying with BBQ. However, that was my only complaint about the food. Ok, actually, the pie we took home for dessert was abit disappointing. The price was reasonable. And for sure don't order the pizza, Cause it's way smaller than a personal one. We had to stop for hamburgers after cause they were hungry. This place is a dive in a very under-served area of Downtown Merced (yes they have a downtown district). This place is so much of a dive that I almost came in wearing scuba gear :) While this wouldn't have been my first choice, the father-in-law suggested it as we needed to take care of some business and this was a good halfway point between the bay area and Fresno where he's from. It's apparently famous for it's BBQ goodies and especially the family platters which a very large family (in girth and number) were enjoying nearby. I think I opted though for a burger of the patty melt variety which was very good (knock me over with a feather!).
