This used to be such an awesome local classic. Instead it's turned into a cash grab with the new owners. They really put their own millennial style to it and have ruined the taste of everything. At first I didn't even know they had new ownership, I hadn't been in a while and decided to come and try the new location out because I was visiting home and missed the food from here. I decided to get a little bit of everything so I could reminisce over the flavor I loved. Instead I was met with very dry chicken, and smaller pieces too for more money, and the jojos were my favorite but now they're kinda soggy? And I decided to buy a BBQ slider just to try it because I mean their name is literally BARBECUE PLACE, and it was the worst thing on the plate. I mean it wasn't bad but it wasn't good either, it's just default, bland, basic food. I will say the fries were good which is the only reason why I left 2 stars and not 1. The old bar b Que place was always a great place to eat (a little greasy, but in a good way). They USED to have delicious food and sides. The quality has dropped below what I'm willing to pay for. Nothing tastes the same except the Jo sauce. Every single chicken tender they gave the TWO of us was half the size of what they used to be. The jojos were always large, now just the butt end of the tiny potatoes. I don't know why u would buy a businesses good name that had been open for decades and ruin it completely in a very short time because u are cheap. My family won't be back. The Bar-B-Que Place is definitely a good choice for barbecue if you are in the area and craving some good barbecue. Barbecue is a pretty serious thing down here in the south. Maybe it is because barbecue is embraced so strongly as a southern tradition that southerners embrace this culinary style with such passion or maybe it is that southern barbecue is simply that good and that incredible taste made it a tradition. The staff here was extremely friendly and outgoing. I went with the pulled pork and I have to say that I was overall impressed with my meal. I also appreciated the no-frills ambiance approach towards the place. There is nothing fancy or pretentious about barbecue and there is no need to sit in some place heavy on atmosphere when enjoying barbecue. Barbecue itself shines as the star of the meal and we don't need atmosphere. This was definitely an overall winner and I would definitely recommend the restaurant. Everything! New ownership. Moved into the old Wendy's. A large plate is $1 more but less meat than the regular plate used to have. Brisket had no flavor whatsoever. Former owner, Matt, had excellent flavor on both the pork and brisket. We ordered mostly outside meat on pork plate and there was very little and chopped so fine. When Matt chopped it, it was in chunks. The slaw was different. The Jo Jo's were okay, but limp and thin in comparison..just not the same. When you buy a restaurant that has done so well for so long, do not change anything and the customers will continue to come in. Very disappointing. Had we not been starving from having not eaten all day, we would've turned our plates back in an left. Oh....the Coke Zero fountain drink was good as well as the water. Matt! Please help these people! Bunch of kids working that didn't know anything if you asked. And we missed the smell of bbq too....couldn't smell it cooking inside or out. My family & I came and ate this restaurant today. We've lived around here for awhile & never had a problem. There was a homeless man eating some food & went to go sleep in their side room. Apparently they called the cops on him instead. It's raining outside & cold. He wasn't bothering anyone. I've heard that they we're supposed to help the jail members & homeless on thanksgiving but doesnt make sense how you can treat someone like that. Staff was friendly, didn't take long to get the food. Jojo's and homemade chicken sauce were my favorite. Chicken fingers, brisket, and ribs were good. I live an hour away from Fort Payne and have been wanting to try one of the few BBQ places Fort Payne has to offer. I picked the BBQ Place for the high rating and the fact that they have a dish on the "100 Dishes You should try in Alabama Before You Die." Sadly, I have to mostly disagree with the high rating of other Yelp reviewers. I'll start out with what I liked. First of all, my sweet tea was refreshingly sweet and perfect. Second, I really liked the BBQ sauce. I couldn't tell much difference between the mild and hot sauce but both sauces had a tangy, sweet, vinegary taste to them. There is an extra hot that comes in a bottle that looks like it should be worchestershire sauce, but it isn't a joke. Third, the slaw was really creamy, diced fine, and was on the sweet side. Last, my large pork plate was $7 and then I had to add a drink. So it was a good portion of food for a good price. Despite all of that, the main reason I am giving them a 2 star is because of the pork. It was chopped but just needed something else to it. The pork was very bland in my opinion and it just sat in the sauce. I have ate a lot of BBQ from so many places and sadly, I have had worse. But this pork to me was just edible. The Jojos for me, was just too much fried goodness. Why did I have to grow-up? Haha In my younger days, it wouldn't have bothered me. But the Jojos are unique because I have never been to another restaurant that cuts and fries their potatoes that way. The chicken sauce is a familiar pinkish sauce you have seen at Zaxby's, Guthrie's, etc...but it didn't have any bite to it like those places I just mentioned. I always want to love BBQ joints and there were some good things at the BBQ Place. But the blandness of the pork, which the sauce could not save, just makes me not want to return. This is one of those small, local places that is so fun to eat at. I read great reviews about this restaurant, and the reviews were true. We stopped here during a short trip visiting DeSoto State Park. Parking and seating are limited, so arrive early. The pork plate comes with two sides. The beans are sweet, and the slaw was finely diced and not tangy. They are known for their JoJos, which are sliced, battered, deep-fried potatoes that are pretty tasty. There are two BBQ sauces plus a chicken sauce. The mild BBQ sauce was very tangy, with a strong vinegar taste. The staff are friendly. Oh, and the sweet tea is amazing! read more

I've officially been going to this place just about every Saturday for the past few years, and it never gets old! The owner, Matt, is friendly and an all-around nice guy. The girl at the front is fabulous too! Remembers us every time we come in (which is quite a lot). The BBQ is my absolute favorite of all the BBQ I've had. Their ribs are my husband's favorites--he has said multiple times, "These ribs are the best I have ever had!" The sweet tea is delicious, and you can believe me because I am a sweet tea junkie. Last but not least, the jojos... they are my absolute favorite item on the menu. First, I wish I could give half stars to my rating because I would have liked to give this place a 4.5. Here's why: The bbq pork was just ok. Everything else I had was absolutely delicious! The true shining stars at The BBQ Place are the chicken fingers and the JOJOs. My husband, a Valley Head native who grew up eating here tried to convince me to just get the chicken finger plate but at a place called the BBQ place I insisted on getting BBQ. I ordered the pork plate with baked beans and jojos and I also ordered the chicken finger snack w/ jojos just to try what he recommended. Turns out I should have listened because the jojos were unlike anything I have ever had and the chicken fingers were the best I've ever had! The beans were tasty as well. So....maybe we have a different taste for BBQ. Wasn't fond of the sauces offered. One kinda tasted like thousand island dressing and the other was "eh BBQ sauce". This is a surprising little BBQ place. We had the family feast with pork, chicken tenders, Jo-Jo's, beans, and the mild sauce. The pork was good and the sauce was tasty with plenty of zing for "mild." The biggest surprise was the chicken tenders and the sauce that came with them. Ft Payne BBQ joint offering "Jo Jos" which are on the top 100 things to eat in Alabama. I understand why! They're extremely thin sliced, seasoned, battered and fried potatoes. They're delicious! I think every table / every customer had an order on their plate. Typical small town BBQ joint with pork, chicken, turkey and beef sandwich/ plate/ salad offerings. Apparently they have a pretty big following for their hand battered chicken fingers I liken to a Gutherie's with a similar type house made sauce. In addition to some pretty good smoked Turkey on my salad I enjoyed house made "hot" vinegar based BBQ sauce. It was such a welcomed change from cheap bottled variety that are standard in small town divey bbq joints. This place is tiny. Maybe 10 small tables in a room that would support 5. The service was friendly and we were served promptly upon ordering. Great small town BBQ spot if you're in the area going to Desoto State Park or Little River Canyon. Get the Jo Jos! My family and I were traveling to Knoxville TN from Florida and I said let's swing in to Ft Payne and grab some BBQ knowing there had to be a good place. This was before GPS and smart phones. So we got off at exit 218 and ran down to the red light next to the Alabama fan club building. Took a left and drove several miles big did not see a BBQ joint. Settled for McDonalds since we had hungry kids with us. Headed back to get on the interstate and a coca cola sign caught my eye. Drove about 1/2 mile or less and there it was BBQ Place. Went in and got a sandwich with their spicy sauce. It was amazing. That was about 10-12 years ago. Have stopped many times since. Thursday came through and got two pork sandwiches and also 2 pints of their spicy hot bbq sauce. As always the food was fantastic and I used some of the sauce on a Boston butt I smoked this weekend.
