Good food, great view, average service. Ambiance is crowded. That is all I have to say about that...

We were told about this place from someone else staying at our hotel in Furnas, and I am so glad they did. First of all, the restaurant is situated in a little cove near Lagoa on the south side of the island. There is plenty of outdoor seating, and the view is awesome. But the food is even better. They have a fairly limited menu, but they have daily fresh fish specialties. The day we went, the specials included fresh swordfish, barracuda, grey triggerfish, mullet, and 2-3 other varieties of fish that I can't remember at the moment. If you order the fish special, it costs 12 euro and in addition to a really good sized fillet, there is a very simple salad bar where you can serve yourself. The food was absolutely outstanding. I had never had grey triggerfish before, and thought it was delicious. But I was absolutely blown away by the barracuda. I live in Florida and here you can't eat barracuda due to the threat of ciguatera (a toxin in coral reefs that builds up through the food chain). But because Sao Miguel isn't in a tropical location and there aren't any warm water coral reefs, there's no need to worry about ciguatera, and I would have to say that the barracuda was probably one of the best fish meals I've ever had in my entire life. That and the fact that it was only 12 euro per entree, in addition to the great view, makes this a restaurant that needs to be visited. read more

You MUST eat here while in Sao Miguel! The view is beautiful and the service is the best I've ever had, and the vibe puts you in total vaca mode. You can order from a variety of fresh fish which they grill and serve with the most delicious roast potatoes, fresh bread, and an unlimited salad bar. Make sure you go here hungry because the portions are huge. Since we were a party of 4 we got to choose four kinds of fish and they made a monstrous platter for us so we each got to try all of them. All were incredible, but my favourite was the Ling fish. We also ordered the octopus salad, grilled mussels (MUST ORDER) and the fish soup to share. All of this along with a few bottles of house white wine came to just under 30 euros per person (and we tipped generously). Totally worth it. I will definitely come back ! read more

This was probably our favorite dinner during our visit to Sao Miguel. It's hard to say what was the best part - the view and sounds of the sea crashing against the wall where we sat, or picking the fresh fish from their case and enjoying it's flaky fresh deliciousness! It comes with the standard potatoes and salad bar that we found all over the finer restaurants of the Azores. We enjoyed the fancy presentation of our bottles of ginger ale poured into wine glasses. Finally, somebody didn't look down on us for not ordering wine. I was tempted to try dessert but didn't bring a sweater, and it gets quite cold on the water at night (duh). The check was presented in a book (all the Sao Miguel restaurants have unique check presentation - no little leather books here), and we couldn't believe our eyes. 12 euros each for dinner, and a couple more for sodas. I wish we could eat like this in the US! It got quite busy and our server was rather slow in collecting our dishes, but that's probably how all Americans feel in Europe. read more

Located at the end of a small winding road and overlooking a tiny bay bordered by a sheer rock wall, Bar Caloura boasts one of the better views on Sao Miguel. During the warmer summer months I've a sneaking suspicion this is the place. The food here is not extraordinary, but when you see the size of the business and especially the kitchen, that makes sense. They probably lack the space to host an extensive menu. So they settle on a few things and do them well. Among those is their fish. From what I could tell, the offerings are subject to whatever the local fishermen bring in that day or the day before. On my visit, it was barracuda. The fillet laid before me would have been way too much for one person. That is not a complaint. I was not a big fan of the limpets. They reminded me of tough oysters, although here you still have to spoon out the entrails, otherwise the taste gets ruined. But many tourists and Azoreans love them, evidently. Fantastic! There's good parking. It's right by the ocean. We went when it was dark but the view must be amazing. It was also raining a bit but the outside park still has shelter, very good pandemic-wise. The food was good and nice that it was local. Available fish very dependent on the day- they only had ray when we went as well as prawns and mussels and such. Two of us were vegetarian and there weren't many options but the bread and cheese was good and there is a salad bar and potatoes come with the fish. The best part by far was our server Nelson who spoke perfect English and was very helpful explaining the food and had good suggestions. We are tourists, so we asked for ideas on what to see and he immediately went and got a pen and paper and wrote a whole itinerary based on where we staying, including contingencies for rainy or sunny weather! We have eaten multiple times this trip and I believe the best fish is the trigger fish. The prawns in the garlic sauce is super yummy too. Make sure you get some bread to soak up the juice. The salad vegetables are all fresh from the island and you can tell they have not been shipped in. The atmosphere is awesome too, sitting next to the ocean listening to the sea while watching People swim in the bay and natural pool. A must see if visiting Sao Miguel. read more

By far our favorite meal while we were in Sao Miguel. It was so good that we decided to go back for lunch our last day before going to the airport. Everything was fresh. No print menu, just a board that tells you what was caught that day. I had the tuna one day and then the triggerfish. Both were excellent. We had grilled lapas both times and they were the best we had on the island. I highly recommend to anyone visiting. At 12€ a plate (including the salad buffet) you can't go wrong. read more

So great we went twice! This is the place to go for fresh fish, if you do not want/like fish, go somewhere else as the menu does not offer alternatives. The view from this restaurant is idyllic, set in a beautiful cove, you can watch waves crash amongst rocky cliffs. We ordered the shrimp starter and fresh catch of the day. The fish (blue fish and barracuda) comes with a help yourself salad bar which was small but again very fresh. Servings of fish were huge. The shrimp starter was amazing, 4 large prawns simmered in a beautiful spicy garlic oil. The fish we had were suggested by waitress and were divine. You could taste how fresh it was. Simply seasoned to allow the fish shine. The one unfortunate part was the service which was very inconsistent, sometimes friendly, sometimes short and abrupt. Both times we felt the wait for the bill was unreasonably long, like 30 mins plus long. If they could improve the service, a five star rating would be given. read more

This is the only place in the area. Waiting for 1 hour to get seated and then another hour to get the bill is unacceptable. If you have too much time to waste you can choose this excellent place. If you have some plans to see the island and not just wait and wait you might want come here. Pick a table with a view of the ocean, it is a quite stunning view from here. After being seated, your server will take you to view and make a selection of freshly caught fish. My wife and I each picked a different fish to try, but honestly we should have just shared because the serving sizes were huge! They were both deliciously grilled to perfection! read more

We went here twice. First time we happened upon the place because we needed a snack and were passing through and knew we wanted to see this pool. We figured the slow acknowledgement was due to because it was busy and eventually waved down the waiter who then gave us menus and got us drinks. Food was good so we figured we would return again because we wanted to enjoy the pool this time but when the weather was overcast, we went back. It was noon, the place was open, we were hungry and were told it would be a half hour or 45min. Fine, we hung out with our beers (got them inside) and returned to our table. We were there early and the kitchen just opened. As the place slowly seemed to fill up we noticed that others were getting placemats and service while we were passed over. Not sure if this is intentional but how do you run a restaurant and not acknowledge or take notice of a table... Worst service on the entire trip. Also, they seem to have two different menus, which we were also not given. Not sure how this place has good reviews considering these two visits we made. Tremendous. Our best meal in Portugal. We arrived just after the kitchen closed, but the cook graciously took our orders. I usually like my fish on the rare side, and the tuna and swordfish both were thoroughly cooked, but it some of the best fish I've ever had. No sauces and only minimal seasonings.
