We had a girl dinner here and it was lovely! The restaurant is really pretty and super clean. Everyone had something different and it was all amazing. I had the gnocchi with chicken. It was so pillowy with a delicious cheese and potato filling. It had large pieces of chicken and peas. It was SO good. The dinner rolls were a favorite too. They were a cross between a bun and a biscuit. Yum! Oh! The arancini are a must order too. Our server was wonderful too. We all loved it. read more

Beautiful view. We went for lunch today. Seared chicken salad was not warm or grilled at all. Walleye was ok bun was not good. Underbaked. I'd go back for drinks and apps only. I will give the main dining a chance sometime. Such a nostalgic spot I hope that dinner menu is better. read more

The calamari was top rate. Ordered 3 frozen drinks which came out different sizes but same price. $15 grilled cheese just bread with lots of cheese. Needed more besides taco cheese dip to make it worth it. Esquite and rice bowl was so small. Thought it was a joke. Ordered a brandy old fashioned and it was horrible. Brought it back to the bartender and told her to add muddled cherry, bitters and sour. She snapped back with that's not how an old fashioned it's made. She said it's brandy and sugar. Huh? You used to have to wait for a patio table. We can understand how easy it was now to get a seat. Very sad. Hope they can figure it out to make it a must stop place on the lake again. First off they told us we needed to make our reservation at 4:45. When we left at 6:30, they still weren't very busy & had a lot of open tables. I ordered a cosmopolitan martini, that was terrible. VERY citrusy. Actually tasted like there was grapefruit or pineapple in it. When the waitress brought it back to the bartender, he got mad. & was very rude. "That's how we always make them ". I have had a Cosmo there many times. They are usually great. Our waitress did a good job. But we did have to ask her if there were any specials or anything not on the menu. Which there was. Had the clam chowder. But could hardly eat it. It was so salty. Definitely not a good dinner there. Felt bad because we were celebrating my sister's birthday. We were satisfied with the food, but waitress practically threw us out because people were waiting for a table. We had reservations and were seated at a booth in the bar. We were there only one hour when waitress asked if we wanted dessert. We asked her if we could wait awhile, and she said they had people waiting for a table. We paid our bill and were finishing a glass of wine when she walked by and commented on the number of people waiting for a table. Server has been there 15 years, so gave great guidance and we loved our choices! Special was fresh sea bass with mussels, Prohibited Black Rice, and veggie of the day. My friend ordered pistachio crusted walleye with corn risotto (she said it was good, but preferred normal risotto). It's a drive into northern Minnesota but well worth the scenery. Me and my family typically go here every Christmas season for a nice dinner and it's usually fantastic. The service is great and the ambiance is very classy and fun. But this year the food was just sub par, not even close to what we have come to expect. The fillet was over cooked, the sirloin was still mooing, the risotto was so raw it was crunchy, and the short rib had no flavor. They did little to fix the experience and the manager didn't want to hear what we had to say. Just overall a disappointing experience especially when you are spending $60 a person. I would steer clear! Many better options close by! read more

Let's start with the amazing staff. From the hostess, the servers, bartenders and the food runners are so lovely and friendly. Justin the manager is great, always takes care of his customers with a smile. Now for the food. Some personal favorites: the calamari and the escargot are the appetizers to start off a great meal, you can't go wrong with either the house salad or the Caesar, for entrees I love the short ribs - it's a little small but doesn't disappoint, for a fish, I really love the walleye but we love to do our own surf and turf by ordering the lobster meal and the ribeye and then splitting them. (Shrimp cocktail, dinner and side salads, walleye). Cons: The service was glacially slow, grouchy, and mistake-ridden. For instance, I ordered a Caesar salad without croutons, with anchovies, and the dressing on the side. When it came with croutons and dripping in dressing, I asked that it be sent back. "It's already made," my helpful server said. Really?!? She begrudgingly returned it and brought it back...still wrong (with croutons and without anchovies). It wasn't a complicated dish but it went wrong twice... I suppose we'll try it again and hope that we were just unlucky with the service, but I don't have high hopes given others' reviews read more

This place may be "good" for the area but it does not deserve an above average rating or your money and i'll tell you why. Service: First of all, I called two weeks in advance to make a reservation for 11 people. When I asked if we could be seated at 7 (2 hours before closing on a Friday night during off season) the lady laughed at me. I was told the LATEST a table of that size could be seated was 6:30. Seems a bit ridiculous.. but we adjusted plans to make it work.. This should've been the first red flag. When we arrived we were seated right away but we waited over half an hour for drinks, so, it was starting to make sense why they couldn't serve us in under 2 hours. sigh. Our waitress was visibly annoyed with us even though we were more than pleasant.. didn't want to be there I assume but that's not our problem. She took her sweet time with everything and did nothing to make our visit "above and beyond", not even offering to take a photo for us (i've had way better service where I live in Seattle where we are known for bad service, it's not expected in MN to be THIS bad..) Atmosphere: This place is priced and advertised as being a bit "upscale" and our group got gawked at for being dressed up by people 60+ in sweatpants eating warmed up halibut and crab. Again.. whatever.. but just was a weird vibe. Food: I mentioned i'm from Seattle, so my expectations were low for seafood here. But wow, i was still really disappointed. The crab cakes: probably the best thing we got. had to be drenched in the very little sauce they provide though. Escargot: Probably the worst i've ever had. Shrimp Pasta: Shrimp was so chewy and pasta over cooked I barely ate any of it. Should've gotten more crab cakes. The kicker here was I asked if I could get a dish with the rice side with NO mushrooms. I was told the rice is pre-made so they couldn't do no mushrooms. Are you kidding? We have to arrive 2.5 hours ahead for you to serve us, and the food is pre-made?? For the price point, things should be made to order.... No thank you! TLDR; Save your money, go somewhere else who cares about their customers and not just making money off of extremely overpriced frozen seafood. read more

I've been here in the peak season and off season both during covid. Most recently I was here on a November, off season visit. The staff was very respectful with regards to seating and social distancing. Chairs at the bar were spaced out and limited to groups of two. But enough covid talk. I like this place because it's steak and bourbon at its heart and core. And I LOVE both of those. On this visit I had the Surf and Turf. It's a small sirloin cooked to a perfect medium rare temp. You also get five grilled shrimp that are on point with just a light marinade. Our server/bartender, Kevin, allowed me to sub their delicious loaded hashbrowns for the mashed potatoes (just do this, trust me). My wife just had a small salad and a crab cake app. That was enough to hold her over and she loved it. The bourbon selection can't be beat. They have all of the Buffalo Trace products. I enjoyed a Wellers 12 year and even did a Blantons as part of an old fashioned. Had to have the mixed drink because I just loved the name and wanted to order it and say it. So sad that this place has gone WAY downhill. They've got a gorgeous restaurant in a perfect location on the lake. And they're trying to get by with low quality food, very weird foid combos from some amateur, high prices, and poor service. Now we see why there are so many recent bad reviews stating the same. We had dinner on a Saturday night in October at 7:30. My $40 piece of fishy salmon came only with a ton of sliced cucumbers and red onions with dill sauce. I had a full plate of cold cucumber slices from about two cucumbers with a piece of salmon on top. This cooled the salmon down very quickly, so I ended up with a cucumber amd salmon salad. Who eats that much cucumber? Nothing else. No rice, no potatoes, no hot veggies, no lemon, no tartar sauce. Mind you, it comes with a house salad first (just iceberg lettuce with cherry tomatoes and a hint of white cheese if you look with a magnifying glass). So it's like having two salads in a row. Then the salmon itself tasted and smelled fishy and we all know that means it's old. The wait staff is disinterested, slow, and not knowledgeable about various dishes. This reeks of poor management. Many items on the menu had dubious combos like the salmon did. read more

We love coming here! Gorgeous views of the lake from pretty much anywhere in the restaurant. We appreciate that we can go here for date night and have it feel romantic and get a great steak (you will not be disappointed if you get the filet) or bring it kids for a 'nice' dinner and not feel like we're annoying anyone by bringing them. What can you say about the Harbor!? Classic nostalgic must stop in Gull Lake dinner club. If you're on a budget definitely go in the summer and sit outside on the patio where they offer optional food baskets lower priced then the big fancy meals inside. However, there is something for everyone. It's great to sit out on the patio or high top tables in the "bar "area. It's great for people watching and boat watching as well... The boats get bigger every year! And don't think you're going to be able to order the au gratin's in your own little ramekin because they just don't have them anymore! Glad they don't have the buttery garlic toast anymore either because I'm on a low-carb diet. Also, they're closed this January and February. And gone are the days we can go in and order a full table of drinks and pull tab to see how much you have to pay, those were also the good all days - I guess it's hard to keep your bottom line when you're giving away drinks. But if you're looking for friendly bartenders, servers, and all-around professional efficient team members Bar Harbor is your place. They know how to serve it up and the drinks are mighty tasty, at least some of the things stay like the good all days! read more

Sad to report that the "new "Bar Harbor has morphed into the old before my eyes. After the renovation (I'm that old) we loved to sit at the bar and order an amazing meal. Last night we were so disappointed. My oscar halibut looked like a frozen filet I could pull out of a bag I got at Cub. It was dry, tiny and the crab was approximately the size of a tablespoon that was also dry. The asparagus looked like it was cooked in the microwave. My husband's $75 steak was so salty it was hard to eat. The usually delicious potatoes were just as salty. Just awful. The only highlight of the evening was our bartender Mike. Our parents enjoyed a meal, an over priced meal at that, as their kids and grand kids sat a few tables away in the bar "area"! tonight we went in and we're kicked out. we were told another family came in whose kiddos threw some food around and now all families with kiddos are kicked out! Nearly seventy (70) years that I was at Bar Harbor in the old location, what an experience remembering how the old wood boats came in up to the docks. This time we had an excellent dinner with a very superb waiter and the great experience, just like the old days as a kid, the new type ambiance with an old-world elegance is just great.
