Hop OVER and run away from this place. There's a reason they have "hop" in their name. HOP HOP AWAY! Staffs were very unprofessional, including not knowing what craft beer they have or what the differences between them are, not responding to profanities from a customer to another table, and no apology for taking an hour to fry wings. Ok... this is a no brainer for me. I'm going with 5 stars. This is now officially my favourite beer pub in Toronto. Having previously lived in both Montreal and Vancouver, I'm willing to go on a limb and say Barhop is the best beer pub in Canada. I returned many, many times since my original review and wanted to share a few updates: The fantastic service continues to be very consistent - either on a busy Friday / Saturday night, a Sunday afternoon, or a quiet weekday. The staff appear to be real supporters of the craft beer scene (and friendly people in general). The outstanding staff is becoming a competitive advantage for Barhop. I think what really sets Barhop apart from other beer pubs is the delicious food. I'm never disappointed. Easily one of the city's best Club sandwiches, tasty fries, a killer Gnocchi poutine and other favourite selections like Deep fried pickles, Mushroom risotto balls and muscles. Food prep is also very consistent - the same quality on all my visits. The rotating beer menu on tap continues to improve and is currently the best mix since I started coming here. Keep the Beau's Wag the Wolf. I also want to share a recent experience that supports my 5 star rating. I ordered a beer that was placed in front of me at the bar. I didn't pay tmuch attention but when one of the owners (At least I think he was) walked by, he did a double take and quickly concluded it didn't look right. He took it back, changed the keg and poured me a fresh pint. There is a good chance I wouldn't have noticed since I never tried this particular beer but he clearly wanted to make sure I enjoyed this beer the way it was intended to be served. We were told to go to this place by our hotel because they had good beer and burgers. They were right. We only had to wait about 10 minutes even thought it was a Friday night. They told us we could stand at the bar and order some drinks though, so we did just that. We got a couple suggestions from the bartender which turned out to be quite good. Their beer menu was quite extensive. We decided on the garlic donuts and a burger. We ordered the garlic donuts because they were highly talked-up. Honestly I really thought they were extremely overrated. I like garlic bread or garlic pretzels much better. They had so much strong garlic that it was not the best... and I love garlic. Their burger was just what we were looking for. It was big, juicy, and came with a ginormous onion ring on the top. Nice presentation. My real complaint is that the tables were SOOO tight to one another. Like I'm talking 8 inches. As we were so close to the other tables, we couldn't help but notice that the table next to us was clearly on a first date, which was highly entertaining for us. My suggestion for anyone wanting to bring a first date here, just don't. It's great for friends or people who are dating, but it's too loud and too close to others for a proper first date. The beer selection at Barhop is extraordinarily large, one might even call it ridiculous. A chart like menu, classifies the beer according to ABV, origin etc. The craft beer is primarily local with lots of favourites as well as hard to get stuff from Quebec, Belgium and the U.S. They even carry my favourite beer, Rosee D'hibiscus from Dieu du Ciel! Cameron's Rye Pale Ale is another must try. I find the place rather charming. Part of that is that they haven't conformed to the 'trendy' ways of their surroundings. Cough...Bier Markt...cough. Their tiny patio is so close to the sidewalk and makes for great people watching. The food is not to be overlooked. My chicken club sandwich was scrumptious. in all fairness I was here for one pint before the Panam closing ceremony - so a very short visit. we had a pint and shared a sandwich and left. the service was kind of slow, we had mentioned we were kind of in a rush but had built a buffer for slow service. the meat in my sandwich was great, super tasty and flavourful. the bun was really hard though, it actually cut the bottom of my mouth. when I asked the server if that was normal as I was in pain she said she didn't know and never came back to ask if I was okay or to let me know. when we asked for the bill, we also asked for the credit machine. she dropped the bill and walked away and then came back after a while with a machine. the place is small but was busy. it seems like they have a lot of great beers on tap. read more

Yeah I definitely enjoyed Bar Hop! Friends have been telling me about it for a while but I've never even known where it was. The beer selection is SUPERB and I'm not even that into craft beers. After looking at the menu for 15 minutes and realizing I don't recognize one thing on it I went with a "Saison" because the name sounded fun and exotic... GOOD CHOICE, BRAIN!!!! I had the Local 7 session saison because the one I originally chose was out. It was probably the most delicious beer I have ever had, now that I think about it. It was 6% and so light and fluffy, with very subtle hints of berries and citrus. Amazing. Would drink all night. It's a bit pricey though for the 13oz that you get. Then I had another wheatey beer but for the life of me I obviously cannot remember the name...it came in a huge 20oz glass (thank god, you know how I like to bathe in my brew). SIDE LAUNCH WHEAT ALE. There. I just looked it up on their Facebook page, where they conveniently update their craft list. This is a less pretentious, less tightly packed, less snobby BarVolo. And I appreciate that a lot because I cannot stand BarVolo even though I love beer, I don't love overpriced beer in tiny glasses. Service was excellent. We only came for a drink but the server was sweet, quick, attentive and really helpful. I wish I got her name...She was wearing a tshirt with macaroons on it. Bless her soul. WILL COME AGAIN!!! Oh Barhop, I wish you were closer to me! Upon leaving a rather unpleasant experience at The Black Bull, my cousin and I continued our bar hopping to of course, the Bar Hop. The place was a bit hard to find since there weren't many street lights in front and the entrance, doors and patio is painted black so it kinda blends in with everything. We entered and found the place quiet and dim. The server came by immediately (not hard since there were only about 6 other people in the entire place). I admitted to him that I was a beer novice, and preferred something lighter and sweeter. He smiled and suggested this beer from Belgium (I think). I just shrugged and said sure, cause if I didn't like it, I would just order something else. I mean, it's beer, not plastic surgery you know? I happened to look up and saw that their special that night was mussels and fries for $10 so of course we got that and some nuts. I have to admit, when my cousin ordered the nuts, I made a face. The thought of countless hands reaching into the same nut bowl and passing over the cashews made my stomach churn. But we were pleasantly surprised when the food came out. the mussels were grit-free which means that they were well washed and came in this great tomato chunky sauce. It was served with bread that was the perfect consistency of crustiness and softness on the inside. The nuts, oh the nuts! They were really good and was seasoned with cinnamon and what I detected as cumin too. My beer was great. I really wish I could remember it's name cause it's going to be my go-to beer now! It had a great soft taste to it and a wonderful blush color. the server was great, attentive and coming back to check on us and our drinks afterwards. He didn't seem pushy or try to rush us out either. When I come back for a visit, this is going to be one of my first spots to hit up! read more

Probably my favourite of all the Bar Hop locations. No matter what day, any time of day, however long my visit, I've always had a great experience here. The beer is the obvious yeastwinner at this place, Bar Hop always has a large range from grisettes to sours and a million and one kind of porters- you're not going to find any Coors Light on draft here. Consider yourself lucky to snag a seat during their busiest hours, which is a good sign about a place. But what I must really share with you their supremely underrated food. The two and a half pages at the back of the menu contains offerings that sing in your mouth paired with a refreshing beer. During my visits, I've tried the fried doughnuts, the jerk wings, jalapeno poppers, lamb corn dog and their buck a shuck on Tuesdays- all of which I would highly, highly recommend. GRILLED FLANK STEAK (with roasted fingerling potato, honey mushroom & chimichurri) We ordered it as medium rare, very tender and juicy. PORK BELLY (with bone marrow, duck egg, and bread) I'd recommend this out of the 2 we've ordered! I was here for veggie pot pie and mussels! We had mussels in Thai basil sauce last time so we tried mussels in green curry tonight. There was a ton of mussels as usual. 1lb for 2 people was more than enough. It was little salty for my husband but I was ok with it :) I wanna have different sauces next time. My favourite veggie pot pie was just ok. It was different from few times I had before. A bit disappointed for the pot pie. However, there are still many dishes that I would like to try them. This awesome lil bar has become one of our favourite hangouts mainly due to the great service, friendly bartenders and great selection of beers. The prices are also pretty reasonable for the area. Beers for you, hard cider for me. In between downtown events, the time was right to check out Barhop for a quick drink and snack. Weather was cooperative in October, so the patio was the destination. The hostess was accommodating and the server was quick to provide the menu and options. In the end it was a hard cider day. West Ave Heritage Dry hard cider and KW hard cider were the chosen ones and they were both great. Stuffed jalapeños was the appi which was hot (warning provided by the server) and sweet. Had a killer time. Sat on the rail outside and had a great time. Large selection of beers and other drinks. I was not disappointed. My waiter was very impatient and not super friendly, but that is okay because he addressed most of my needs without me even asking. For example when I asked for steam whistle beer, instead of flat out saying they don't have it, he asked me if I wanted something "crisp cool and refreshing" which I did. He brought me a great beer. I ordered the burger after a while and was happily surprised. I recommend the upgrade to bacon and cheese. All the good stuff. It comes with a tasty onion ring on top. The fries do not disappoint. Toronto oddly enough has amazing French fries across the board. Barhop was recommended to me by a local bartender. They are always full of locals, and now I see why. read more

What a sweet spot! Excellent menu of drinks, great choices for top shelf liquors. You can even have a scotch or bourbon flight!! I think the most amazing thing about this place is Darian, the bartender/manager. Bustling joint on king west. Reasonably priced and HUGE selection of beers. We wanted easy drinking - the waiter recommended the Sierra Nevada and also the hofbrau. Both were great. I hear the Thai mussels are worth a try - I will go back soon to sample the food. This time around it was just beer. We liked the vibe. So much so we almost didn't make our reservation at libretto down the street! Busy and loud but not rowdy. They just empty the tables and allow the next customers to sit down. We watched them do that for a few tables. This is inexcusable even if you are busy. The food is ok but everything is deep fried. Little place saved us from a rainy Saturday afternoon with a few beers in a quaint place. After waiting for a gaggle of 20 year olds to leave (yes, remember it's Canada) we took a seat at the bar. Never have I been made to feel like our presence was such an inconvenience to a bartender. Arrived on a Sunday at about 11pm to a less than half full bar. Came based on reviews here suggesting it was a decent place for a Sunday drink. There were 5 of us (presentable 30s, mixed men and women if that's relevant) and we attempted to sit at the bar area where there were three seats available. Bartender said nope, you'll block my serving area. We said no problem, two of us will stand. Nope again, we all need to sit. He directed us to the other side of the bar to five seats lined in a row. We preferred not to sit there as it was not really conducive to conversation at a bar. We suggested sitting at a table for 10 where there were two people sitting on the end he said no "you'll be bothering the other patrons". The two at that table did not seem bothered at all and there was plenty of room for everyone. At this point I expressed my dissatisfaction and suggested we leave. No attempt at an apology or alternative solutions. Just more defensive BS from a bartender who should consider a career change if he can't be pleasant with customers. Won't return. read more

Came here for mussel Mondays. Mussels are $9.95 with the purchase of a drink. The mussels come with a side order of fries & bread. I got the Thai basil mussels. It was kind of spicy but good. Scene: it's our last night in Toronto and we just want to cap it off with a final drink after dinner. Because this was a Sunday night around 1030 pm, a few places seemed to be closed or empty but we continued to walk in seek of the perfect place. We were at the end of our rope and on the verge of giving up. Enter Barhop: perfectly dark, perfectly populated (not too crowded, but not empty), perfect music to snap to (cool 90s hip hop and RnB being played from vinyl), wide selection of drinks (so many beers on tap) and probably the nicest bartender that I've had during my Toronto visit. Awesome! I came in with a hot toddy on my mind. Initially the bartender said he couldn't make one due to equipment issues, so my friend ordered and I spent the next 10 minutes staring at the menu. Watching my confusion and lack of interest in an alternative, the bartender snuck away, boiled some water in the back and made magic. He reappeared with a toddy in hand and I couldn't be any happier. Great beer selection. Amazing, really. I like the creative names and flavours. Of the beers. The food, however, is hit and miss-- often a bit too 'ironic'. Their meat pies are what they are known for and they have been great in the past... but the last time I went there for my bro's bday their $20 meat pie was adulterated with watery, plain ground beef- I'm talking dry and tasteless and utterly unremarkable dollar-a-pound meat engulfed by fluffy and light pastry. Did. Not. Work. Returned it for the not-bad fish and chips which were of course ironically battered in Rice Crispies and Ruffles potato chips.
