I had the pleasure of coming to Bar Next Door to support the jazz group playing last night, and I have to say, it was a great experience! The bar was well-kept, and of course I had my favorite drink Sex on the beach and I was pleased that it was under ten bucks. It is not a big space, so it does get crowded quickly. Luckily I didn't have to pay a cover charge to sit and watch the group play between 6:30pm and 7:45pm but there was a one drink minimum. Usually there is a cover charge of $12 to hear a band. Our server was very friendly as well. Bar Next Door is a cool place to go when you want a fancy night out with the gals or bros, and makes a perfect date night with your special beau. But if you do plan to come here make sure you have a substantial amount of money, it can get pricey. read more

Great little bar with live jazz. Found it by accident walking down MacDougal Street. Heard live music coming from within, down a little staircase. Peeked my head in and decided to give it a go. Happy I did. The band was a trio (Sheryl Bailey) of guitar, keyboard/bass and drums. While playing energetically, the volume was perfect. I sat right in the row of tables right in front, in fact, right in front of the drummer (I could touch the cymbals if I wanted to) and had no volume issues. Very comfortable. The service was very good. Bartender made a perfect Bourbon Sidecar and I ordered a "Pizza con Speck". Both excellent. There was a $12 music cover which is very reasonable. Food and drink prices were very reasonable as well. Very nice! read more

An acquaintance of mine was playing here last night. Latin fusion jazz. It is hidden inside of La Lanterna Caffe, so just keeping walking once you are downstairs. It is small, dark, cozy and cavern-like. Despite the abyssmal service, the place still managed to charm. Mostly because the music was good and the venue facilitated flirting and good conversation. I definitely will not be back for food or drinks. Everything was overpriced. read more

Cute underground (literally) place for live jazz! To celebrate end of finals, my girlfriends and I decided to go to a local jazz bar. We heard good things of the restaurant upstairs but had no idea of this hidden jazz bar downstairs. What a good find! There is a small cover fee, but definitely worth it! The jazz vibe is very intimate, as it's essentially a small basement living room with a handful of high tables and a small bar right up close to the live jazz band. I loved this though! But note, not the best place for a date or a night out with friends, since it's LOUD-you won't be able to hear an actual conversation. I got the lychee martini, which was really good! Surprisingly, they have a large selection of cocktails and decent wine. Simply, a place to enjoy good live music. read more

Checked this place out to watch a friend perform. It's a very tight space and if you get stuck at the bar or by the band, you will be sitting side by side with someone you don't know. I did get bumped a number of times by the waiter. It's not that he was doing it on purpose, but that was annoying. If you do hear a band, they do charge a $12 cover. Got the personal pizza with lamb, which was enough to feed me and my friend. UIt was very good. After a few beers, I was doing just fine and was able to enjoy the music. read more

This place is SMALL. There's probably only about 20 seats in the entire place. There's one or two tables for 4 people and the rest is definitely best configured for 2 people. When they have live music playing, the space is really cramped so be prepared for it. We came for the evening set at 6:45, and there's no cover, just a one drink minimum. You can order food from La Lanterna at the Bar Next Door, so if you're hungry it's not a problem. The service was a little harsh when we were trying to get situated in the cramped space. The general vibe of the place was that it was not for talking/catching up, just listening to jazz. Keep that in mind if you want to catch up with friends. read more

Visited the Bar Next Door with great anticipation for a little jazz and dinner. The place is intimate to a fault--with a trio against one wall, there wasn't a seat more than twenty feet from the band. Sounds great, unless the band has all the nuance and control of a large herd of ill-tempered elephants. Tonight, the drummer was pounding as if he thought he was playing MSG, and the guitarist and saxophonist raised their volume to match. Instead of staying for dinner we left without ordering a drink because the volume was ear-splitting, bone-shaking unpleasantly loud. The place is cute, and I like the food at La Lanterna, so I'd definitely try again, but the trio tonight didn't play to the room (or didn't have the control to do so). Given the very small size of this room, I'd think the Bar Next Door would be careful about the size, skill and sensibilities of the groups they book. This would be the perfect place to see a solo or duo, but the trio tonight seemed to think they had a much larger room with which to fill with sound. read more

What a beautiful, intimate space to hear some jazz! Guitarist Peter Mazza on Sunday nights is a class act. Always good musicians. Cheap drinks. Nice crowd. What more do you want? A fireplace? That's upstairs in the front of the cafe. You want a backyard under glass? That's behind the building. If for some reason you want to talk to the octogenarian Coen Brothers, who fill their scripts with 32,789 words too many, sorry, you won't find them here. The Coen Brothers are in LA trying to pick up young chicks. The crowd at Bar Next Door knows silence is golden. read more

This is one of those places I would only go to see a specific group that I love.. It is tiny and pricey but does offer an intimate atmosphere thats great if you love the tunes. There is some good food and fancy drinks to be had here as well if you are so inclined. The cover charge is average for a jazz bar ($12-15) Over all not the type of place I would just drop by to see some random tunes, but if you are free flowing with your cash, or just feeling adventurous go for it. Right now Jonathan Kriesberg is playing wed nights and he is a world class jazz guitarist.. a must see for any jazz fan! read more

The place is SO tiny, SO crowded, and SO overpriced. But you know what. You can hear some of New York's best jazz players play right in front of you. In a venue this intimate, you can breathe the music and absorb the music with your skin. Perfect for a date if you both are jazz lovers. I don't recommend going with a big party. A good friend plays there sometimes, otherwise I would never go again. Our group settled the check and a friend and I stayed for the second set and had the cover charge slapped on a second time, even though it's one charge for both sets. Advertised like a place with live music but you find out that it is only available in the very tiny basement. Considering the big space in the backyard/garden, maybe they can consider the possibility of having some live music there, too since the place is very attractive. This place is great! I was a little wary of going here after seeing the reviews about how tiny and overcrowded it is, but we took the risk anyway and I'm glad we did. Maybe it was the time we got there (about 7 pm on a Tuesday) or we just got lucky, but we got the best seat in the house and it wasn't crowded at all, but had a good amount of people. It's small, yes, but that just adds to the very warm, cozy, NYC atmosphere. The service was excellent, the jazz was fantastic (come before 7:45 and there is no cover!) and the passion fruit champagne cocktail was amazing. The bar menu is extensive. The pizza wasn't groundbreaking, but it was good and I have no complaints. The salad selection is pretty good and they do not skimp on the ingredients. Overall, a great evening. read more

Wandered in near closing time on a weekday a while back in late Autumn-- no live music and not many people. It was small. It was also cozy, welcoming, and down-to-earth in a worldly way. Their pumpkin cognac cheesecake was harmonious in texture and taste. A hint of spice, a whisper of earthy. Felt like a gentle, boozy caress with a sweet, but not overpowering, kiss. read more

I've been here several times in the past week. Those who say the service is hit and miss are right on the money. Two nights ago, the waiter was very friendly and helpful. The music was wonderful. Went there earlier this evening and unfortunately had to sit at the bar. First, I was told to sit on the seat at the edge. Five minutes later, I was asked to move over a seat. Ten minutes later, I was asked to move over one more seat. When someone is sitting in all the bar seats, you have to get up and turn around to get your drink, and forget about eating anything. The last issue of this evening, along with the fact I would rate the trio performing a 5.5 (the bass player was out of tune half the time, and the drummer was barely audible), was some of the audience members. One table of four spent virtually the whole time talking. Obviously, this was background music to them. At 20 dollars minimum, they might as well have stayed home, played some recorded music so they weren't interfering with other people in the audience who paid to hear the music, not their voices in the background. read more

Excellent Jazz experience, cool and intimate vibe inside. Delicious authentic Italian cuisine

I went on a Tuesday at 7pm. It was slow, it was just me, a couple, a student, and an Asian musician. The jazz was impeccable. I sat at the bar. The bartender, Sebastian, was incredibly helpful and very charming. I mostly drink just black label, and they didn't have that available but Sebastian had me tasting a couple of other scotch and i ended up discovering and new whiskey i like :) The server was okay. I can't recall her name but she did her job, she should just censor what she says. A lot of negativity, talk of money( or the lack of it) just things a customer did not need to hear. Anyhow the spot is small( think basement). And the door opens weird, and a couple of customers walked away because they couldn't figure out that hey maybe they should pull the door instead of push. It's a super cute and intimate spot. Great if you enjoy jazz, candle light and good Italian food. Try the calzone with red pepper and lamb sausage. Yum yum. read more

The Bar Next Door is a pretty, intimate room for listening to jazz. Very nice ambience, and it seems that the music that they present is of a fairly good calibre. The food, however, is very mediocre. The worst thing, though, I have to say, are the bathrooms! The ladies room was filthy, with paper towels all over the place and the toilet seat so disgusting that I had to take a shower when I got home! That is just unacceptable. The cover charge is not so bad, but with the food it adds up and one would expect a reasonably clean bathroom - not one that's worse than a gas station. read more

I can't believe that in about 16 hour,s it will officially be the first hour of 2017 and here I was up until last night, still trying to decide how to celebrate New Year's Eve, where and what time to start and as usual I try to opt for an intimate and non-rowdy reveler's type of spot. So was it to be my pal's sophisticated loft party in Soho or perhaps to hear some music and feast on some sumptuous fare first and then after, on to my friend's soiree? Or maybe to do both...And since I'll just be with one or two of my SINGLE BFFs while my s.o. is alas away on business, it would be wise to also choose the resto/jazz club with a NYE tariff that won't at all break the bank (especially after the couple of grand damage I did re: shopping sprees over Xmas!) Then voila, I remembered the charming little jazz club, Bar Next Door, downstairs from one of my fave Village eateries, La Lanterna di Vittorio and how I enjoyed especially dining in their "greenhouse" heated dining garden during the Holidays a couple years ago. So when I called to see if they were again having this fab 5-course prix-fixe menu (including Champagne cocktail) and heard that a fave trio of mine headed up by the amazing Ed Cherry, was playing AND unbelievably they still had rezzies left for tonight, I was so thrilled and so were my two gal pals, too. So we opted for the first of the three seatings at 6:30 (with two additional at 8:30 and 10:30) and also with a mere $67 price tag for this early slot for both this five-course dinner AND music (yay!) and then we could go on to the Soho loft soiree totally chilled and also satiated with great food (their excellent individual lasagnas are the menu's main feature tonight).Champagne and also totally kick back with some top jazz, too. And the cool thing here is that I also could have opted to do the prix fixe upstairs at La Lanterna, that I think I was told had some spots still open, as well at this late stage in the game (but sans music and just the prix-fixe - but a mere $55. too!). So I'm all set now for a fab and uber-festive GNO later in exactly the ambiance I had hoped for, but wasn't at all sure would be at all possible on such short notice on what could have been an otherwise rather manic night in town - big sigh of relief!... read more
