Looking for live music to enjoy with my brother and his wife during their visit. Remembered a few times at Mezzrow, a terrific, intimate West Village jazz club. While it has been years since I've been here, when both times it was an early show with no cover and a great vocalist, this was the relaxing, talented, instrumental Yaniv Taubenhouse Trio, with a mix of original and other pieces. Keep in mind, there is a cover for later shows. Definitely would recommend Mezzrow for an enjoyable musical experience with a chill atmosphere. read more

After several visits to Smallz Live Jazz spot I finally made it to their sister venue Mezzrow, and what a great venue it was. A quaint more upscale and visually appealing Jazz club with live entertainment, Arriving early I met Nate and he gave us the complete lowdown, confirmed my reservation, presented me the tickets, and escorted us in. The drink menu was impressive and I quickly ordered an Old Fashioned and a Manhattan for the lady. After the remaining patrons were seated the performers returned to the stage and the show began. The music was totally amazing! Acoustic, Contemporary, Jazz! A trio comprised of piano, upright bass, and drums. An hour set that delighted all in attendance! Bought the David Janeway, Cameron Brown, and Billy Hart CD and got their autographs. Mezzrow it a great place and I highly recommend a visit. read more

Came here with a girlfriend for some jazz before dinner. Showed up about 5 minutes before the doors open and got sat in the front table. You can show up to see if there are any tickets left but I would definitely book online. You have to get a drink but there good and reasonably priced. The show was great and I really enjoyed it. Mezzrow is an absolute GEM of jazz club located in the heart of Manhattan in the West Village. The setting is quaint but the vibes are off the charts. Quality music, excellent and very personable attentive service from the wait staff. And Nate, the host, does an incredible job navigating the seating arrangements. I was in town to celebrate my 50th birthday and came 2 nights in a row. Both nights did not disappoint! We will definitely be back. read more

Great music and wonderful atmosphere--it does get a little pricey as at the door it is $25/person and you need to have one drink minimum--which I understand since they have to pay the band. Every time I have gone the music has been fantastic and they have music late into the night every night of the week. Save money and pay at the door (if you don't think the show will be sold out) as it costs $25 at the door as opposed to $35 when you book online in advance. The staff is kind and courteous. You are truly in a unique Jazz Basement and the entire atmosphere is pretty much perfect for Jazz. Make sure to arrive before a set starts so you can get in (if you arrive during a set you won't be able to enter or you will be able to enter but will have to pay for that set AND the next). This is a very intimate jazz club, especially if you are seated near the performer. It is truly like being in your living room and sometimes when you're so close, you don't know whether to look up or look the other way. We went to a 6 PM performance of Anna Kochina. It took her a little bit to get her voice modulated for the environment. She was accompanied by a bassist and a piano, and the music was very good. They don't serve food, but I saw someone with a little cheese platter. Waitress was hard to flag down for refills of drinks. Great venue, especially if you want to be able to engage with the performers. Reservations see a must because at that 6 PM show there was a full house. read more

This was such a nice experience, full of beautiful jazz and wonderful drinks. For just $35, you get to see talented musicians and artists play and you are literally mesmerized throughout their whole performance. Your ticket doesn't include one drink, which is required, but it adds to an experience. The service was good and drinks also came out pretty fast. If you have multiple people in your group, I recommend putting it under one reservation. So that the waiter knows to sit you all together. read more

There seem to be 2 sister locations (Mezzerow and Smalls). Mezzerow is in the heart of nightlife, surrounded by multiple bars and eats. Both locations have a significant number of shows ~4 nearly every night. Tickets to the show (jazz) are $40 per person when bought online in advance - not sure if there is an upcharge/discount for at the door. I arrived 30 min prior to show time at 10pm, they did not let us in until a few minutes prior to the show. I was the first in line and people did arrive pretty steadily from my arrival until door open. There are 2 separate lines for pre-bought tickets and for standby/at the door purchase. The earlier you get in, the closer you will be sitting to the band. This is an intimate/grungy sort of bar. Servers will come to take your drinks orders when you arrive. There doesn't seem to be any food provided here. The mixed drinks are reasonably priced at $14 per cocktail. The cosmo was refreshing with a decent amount of alcohol. Our show was around ~45 minutes. They told us at the end we were allowed to stick around for the next show? Not sure if you would have to give up your front seat for a more rear seat if you were to do this. The entire venue is set up as a rather long hallway with the band at one end and the bar at the other. Love this place. I always feel happy here. The wait staff is generally good except for one waiter who's kind of unfriendly and not so great. If you don't get him or if it all goes well, it's a great place. Drinks are weak but the wine is fine. They stack shows so you will have to skedaddle after whatever show you've gone to. This review is overdue, but I had a nigh on spiritual experience in this cozy little basement in the West Village a while back and if I help even one other person feel the same, it will have been worth writing. Like many, I find myself when I get lost in New York. After plans for a long weekend in the city with friends fell through, my wife and I decided to wing it. We found Mezzrow completely by chance, only later learning that it's been one of NYC's more significant jazz spots since the 90s and is even featured in the Louis Vuitton City Guide. It turned out to be a magical night. Down an easy-to-miss stair just around the corner from the famous Stonewall Inn, a Steinway lives out its golden years in an intimate back corner of a narrow brick-lined bar. The ceilings are low, the drinks are strong, and given the number of people there that night the bathroom was surprisingly clean (a major plus in my book). We bought our tickets on the train over and by good fortune we arrived just as the previous set was getting out. The man at the door seated us right up by the performers, one of whom -- the drummer -- I accidentally bumped on my way to our seats (my apologies if you ever read this!). We sat and sipped as we waited for the ten o'clock set to start, an old fashioned and a French 75 -- old habits, new places. I had just started to wonder how they got the piano down the steep and narrow stairs when Cameron Campbell took his seat. Accompanied by his brother and a close friend, the trio lit up the stage as the entire room felt their connection from the first note. The way they looked at each other was love, and together they created a performance together greater than any could have as a solo act. It's a feeling you have to be in the room for, you can't hear on a studio album or even a live recording. I've been to a lot of basements, seen a lot of jazz, but rarely has it been quite so electric. This was the kind of performance that reminds you that jazz is made to be lived in. A lot of people have confused notions about the genre. Outside of certain circles, it has a reputation for being pretentious or boring, confusing, and, most regrettably, elevator music. It's possibly the least monolithic genre, but too many hear Kenny G once at the mall and decide that's it. Most have not experienced a live performance. If I could, I would bring them all to Mezzrow. Jazz is a genre best experienced firsthand. When you see it played live you're drawn in, captivated by the energy of it, grounded in its construction among the players and enlightened to how each piece of the ensemble contributes. Other artists have variations in their live performances -- imperfections normally cut out in the studio. We go to concerts and love them for this reason. It's real. But ultimately, the studio album is the peak experience in terms of sound quality and realizing the artists' creative vision. Not jazz. Jazz is music of the moment. Louis Armstong said it's "music that's never played the same way once" because though it's written and rehearsed over and again in advance, the version the audience sees is often created on the spot. Improvisation leads every performance. From the song to the genre, jazz is alive, changing, fluid. And that's why I love Mezzrow -- because more than any venue I've been to, it embodies all of these qualities too. The spirit of jazz is alive there, and I can't wait to go back. So I invite you to give it a shot -- the lived experience is so much different than an album, or god forbid an elevator. read more

Obsessed. Absolutely obsessed. This is a tiny, intimate space. The ambiance is perfect. The staff was kind. The music was incredible. The drinks were bad, not gonna lie. But that was the only downside! Next time I go, I'll get wine, because there will absolutely be a next time. They are mindful of sound here, and really make an effort so everyone gets a great sonic experience. The place is also very centered around the artists which is great, it's not just background music. I didn't get to see the artists that well, but it was a great horn-forward set. The drinks on the other hand, were lacking. Mezzrow is a jazz club in the heart of Greenwich Villages. My friends and I wanted to experience real jazz and this place fulfilled our expectations. Is a small and cozy place tickets is $20 and you can go to Smalls with the same ticket in the same night, so ended up being a great deal!! The artists were great! Such good music and went building with every piece they played inviting other musicians! Was great. Staff was very good serving you while performance was going on. My friend and I happened upon here after Smalls (the sister jazz club down the street) seemed too packed to get a seat. While Smalls has rows of seats and crowds standing (and a steeper cover at $20 per person), Mezzrow has more of an intimate underground lounge vibe. We came for the last set of the night, paying half price cover ($10 each) to sit at a table right next to the performers. We each drank a cocktail ($15 each) while enjoying the jazz piano and bass horn show. Overall, I recommend for a unique experience away from the typical bar scene. FYI: You can use your ticket stubs to get into Smalls free after Mezzrow closes at 2am. My friend and I were too tired to make the stop, but nice that this is an option! read more

Unless you have purchased the ticket super early, you will end up sitting or standing by a bar where ppl and a dumb bartender chat the whole time while musicians are playing. So you will waste your $25 or $40 per person for the experience you can have a noisy bar with jazz music. It was truly a nightmare being there. No matter how good the musicians play you cant hear it clearly. You cant even see them playing. Oh especially waiters you first be quite before shhhhing ppl. My friend Stuart and I have come to Mezzrow many times. I have one friend in New York City, where I live and work, and that's Stuart -- he's my one friend though I have many acquaintances, because we have known one another for years; and neither of us is of any use to the other, meaning we hang out, and I am confident the relationship has no transactional value and thus no ulterior motive. We have in common a love of jazz. So we listen to lots of it together, at venues big and small. He's much more selective than I am, in what he will buy tickets for and what he enjoys. Mezzrow often makes his list, and I have enjoyed every single show. I write for two reasons. The first is to note that if it is not apparent this is a tiny venue. It is very cramped. It's a single very long, very narrow space, with the performers at the far end. So you need to show up early. Stuart is good about that. So we always have seats at the very front. When I say very front, I mean I could reach out and poke the pianist or the drummer. I have chatted with them when it has seemed appropriate, but tried to be as respectful as possible about their physical space and head space. I am guessing the seats farther back are not as good. At the distance we have sat, however, wow, you are immersed in the sound. The second is to point out they record. I am not quite sure if it is every show. I do know, however, from listening, that the microphone picks up the conversation of the folks where we are located. So if you are not keen to have what you have said saved for posterity and available on the internet, you should find another seat. Other than that, Mezzrow is just a wonderful place. read more

It's a cozy little hole in the wall in the West Village and I always love it! Friends of mine like Kenny Werner and Kate McGarry and Keith Ganz have all played here.
