On our last night in Whistler, we decided to head to Bar Oso. Whistler Village has so many different restaurants and cuisines and during our stay, we've had Japanese, Latin, Indian, Italian, and American. So we thought it would it would be nice to end our stay with some Spanish tapas. We tried: House baked bread Assorted cheese board - the chutney was delicious Crispy artichokes Spicy, fried cauliflower - one our favorites shishito peppers chorizo sausage gambas al ajillo tuna poke - definite highlight beef short rib - delicious The atmosphere of Bar Oso was warm and relaxing. The highlight of the renovated space is the lighted/glowing bar at its center. Service was excellent. Great experience to share with friends. read more

Headed here for our last night in Whistler and it did not disappoint! Love the ambiance and the beautiful decor, the restaurant wraps around the bar at its center. Began with some cocktails - I enjoyed a cocktail called Trophy Wife and my husband had Malfy Gin and Tonic! What we ordered - Charcuterie including different type of pate, cheese and ham. - Pate was excellent, cheese and ham were also good choice. Bread with salmon roe dipping, - very unique dipping choice. Croquetas de setas Valdeon fonduto - Deep fried cheese and mushroom with cream sauce, - It was very delicious dish. Never go wrong this combination. Slow cooked wagyu beef cheek pemberton carrots, pickled mustard seeds - Highlight! Beef cheek was super tender and this is the one melting in your mouth. sauce was very rich and bold. It really paired well each other. Highly recommend with full body red wine! The food had great flavor and it was incredibly rich. The sobrassada was a personal favorite. It's a busy restaurant and I'd recommend looking into reservations prior to your dinner. The shishito peppers were also very flavorful and the sauces were delightful. The paella was a little underwhelming compared to the other dishes. It was just a bit bland. Everything else we had was great. The music was upbeat and the staff were friendly. Their desserts were very rich whether a fudge cookie or cheeses. This place was an honourable mention in Vancouver Magazine for Best in Whistler, so I wanted to try it. We had a reservation, we arrived on time, and were seated immediately. The first thing that catches your eye - the warm glow of the bar - it creates a neat vibe to the place. We went with the midweek Taste of Spain prix fixe and added one item: - Gazpacho - Good. I've never really enjoyed gazpacho in the past, but the small serving and liberal use of salt/seasoning made it quite good - Spanish Olives - OK. Three types provided. I'm not an olive person, but tried all of them and thought they were fine. - Citrus salad - OK. Not a grapefruit person, but it was a small serving so it was fine - Fresh Charcuterie - Good. All of the items were good and very distinct from each other. Half size is perfect for 2 people - Paella - Good. Flavour was good but didn't have that signature socarrat (crust) - Pollo Asado - OK. The leg tasted fine, but the breast was dried out. - Chocolate Cookie - Very good . Fresh, still hot molten chocolate. All cookies should be this good. - Spanish Cheeses - Ok. Cheeses were a bit bland. Server was fine, but busy and rushed. Kitchen was backed up because our paella and pollo were served a good 15 min apart. I noticed the table beside us had an even longer wait and were clealy not happy with the wait time. It took a long time to get our bill too. Overall, I had mixed thoughts. We returned to Bar Oso after reminiscing about the Café con Crema multiple times after our visit last year. What an incredible take on espresso martini! Besides their incredible cocktails, sitting at the bar is a treat at Bar Oso. The bartenders are masters of their craft and their attention to detail leaves nothing to be desired. All of the servers are so kind, attentive, and helpful if you have questions about the menu. This time, I also ordered La Huerta, which was tall, light, and refreshing - perfect after a long day of skiing. We enjoyed the Alcachofas & Salmorejo and the Local Roasted Beet Salad - both delicious and so flavorful. I've only had incredible tapas here, but in true Spanish style, the portions aren't big, which is a great opportunity to try multiple plates. This was the best Spanish food I've eaten outside of Spain. We sat at the bar, which is lit from below by lights. The patatas bravas were crisp with a light sauce. The artichokes melted in your mouth. The octopus and lamb meatballs were wonderful. All enjoyed with a bottle of ribera del duoro. As I was chatting with one of the servers, he remarked that some guests have complained that the food isn't spicy enough. These folks are conflating Mexican with Spanish. Spanish food is flavorful and has many slices but it is not picante. This was explained to me on my first visit to Spain over ten years ago. My wife and I visited on a whim this evening, without reservation and am glad we did. We sat at the bar, which was entertaining to watch the charcuterie and other things being prepared before us. My wife enjoyed a couple of glasses of red, and I enjoyed an NA ipa. The beet salad was a noteworthy start, followed by the iberico selection charcuterie (highly recommend) and the lamb albondigas was wonderful (highly recommend). Wow this place was amazing. Took our group here and squeezed into a walk in seating after waiting 20 min. Having been to Spain, I missed the stereotypical patatas bravas and pan con tomate so I definitely needed to get those. Also sampled their waygu (extremely soft and delicate), their pork belly, grilled octopus, iberico skewers, shisito peppers, lamb meatballs. Favorites definitely was their waygu and grilled octopus!! When we checked in, we were told that there were several tables that were sat about an hour ago and that the wait shouldn't be too long but we ended up waiting over 1.5 hours outside in cold before we were called in. The Spanish cuisine did not hit my expectations but they do have Iberico and will do a half order for two. Bar Oso happened to be at the bottom of the lodge we stayed at and thank god it was! The perfect find for date night before a weekend of skiing at Whistler. We stopped in twice. The first time for dinner and drinks. We tried 5-6 items and loved them all. Many said the cauliflower was their fave. Between 4 of us we dug pretty deeply into the gin and tonic menu. Loved the pretty garnishes with each new drink and the fun and interesting things they had on the menu, including a gorgeous Stout. Minus one star for the poor service we had the next night when stopping by for a nightcap. We were seated but apparently no server was assigned our section? We were at the bar but even the bartenders ignored us. Finally someone stocking plates noticed we were being ignored and put our order in. Later we flagged down the gal who dropped off our drinks and she commandeered a machine to check us out. A manager stopped us on the way out to apologize but it was still just a weird experience. Trendy, yet casual spot with some tasty tapas options! We came on a Fri night just before 5:30 and there was already a wait for the two of us. It turned out to be about 15 mins. One slightly annoying experience.....they texted that our table was ready and when we came to get seated....they said they needed to wait for the prior people to get up and leave. What? Why text us the table is ready when it's not? Our seats were at the corner of the bar and we enjoyed them as we had good visibility to the place and got rapid service from the bartenders. They had a solid IPA option with the 4 Winds ($9) which was excellent. We started out with the Spanish Olives ($9) and Iberico Ham Skewer ($8) and they were both spot on. We moved onto to the Lamb Albondigas ($19), Chorizo Sausage ($17) and Berenjuenas con Miel ($12) with a side of House Baked Bread for dipping in the red pepper sauce that came with the meatballs. My favorite was the chorizo and my son liked the crispy egg plant along with the warm house bread. Service from the bar staff was super friendly and prompt. No reservations, means if you are a larger group like we were either sit up lined up at the bar or in a line at the window, okay for couples but hard to get a table for a cozy tapas at a table and conversation with your mates without a long undetermined wait. The biggest takeaway from this review is that even though this spot is unique, it is not worth the hype and leaves much to be desired in terms of food quality and service. First, getting a table here is a nightmare. Our experience with the host and communication regarding our table was disrespectful and unprofessional. We had entered our name on the wait list for a table of 4. From the beginning, the host could not provide any reasonable wait time. One conversation, an hour. The next, 30 mins. Later, after an hour waiting, she told us another hour. I honestly don't mind a long wait if the host is upfront about it. To hold us over, we ended up getting a snack from a nearby spot. When we received a text that our table was ready and that we had to return to the bar in 10 mins, I replied back immediately that we wouldn't be able to come right away as we were finishing food at our current place and that they could move us down the list. The host texted back that we needed to make changes in person. One person in our group quickly walked back. She returned to the bar within the 10 minute mark to find out that the host had removed our name entirely (!!) with no warning since we "didn't respond to the text" even though we were literally on the way to talk in-person. This all transpired in less than 10 minutes. The lack of compassion or sympathy from the hostess was truly the worst part. When we finally got seated and tried the food it was fine but honestly underwhelming considering the abundance of 5 star reviews and the hype/wait time of this place. For the experience that I was paying for, I expected to be blown away by the quality of the flavors but was left disappointed. Tortilla was unflavorful and dense. Croquets were salty and unidentifiable in taste. Even the olives, which should be an easy source, were too fibrous. The wait staff though, was very great. One of our members was gluten intolerant and our server was very accommodating with gluten free bread and adjustments as necessary. Thank you to the patience and kindness of the wait staff! Overall, I'm not saying this is the worst place ever, but curb your expectations and be realistic that you're paying for an ambiance and the location of Whistler and not necessarily the quality of food. read more

This place is in the heart of Whistler village. The scallop crudo was so great that if it was the only menu item I ate I may have given this place 5 stars. We also had a ceviche with mixed seafood that was good but ho hum after that stand out crudo. Olives we ordered were good and the cheese plate we ordered was fine if not a bit bland and boring ( to be honest nothing special so I might skip it and go for a more interesting item such as the beef tartare or tuna poke. I was really excited for Bar Oso and we had a nice time here. For drinks alone I'd probably rate it 4 stars, but the food was lackluster. If I could do it again, I'd probably come here just for drinks because the cocktail menu is varied and impressive. I will say, the vibes here are great -- feels very chic, upscale, and trendy, but not in a pretentious/stuffy/white tablecloth way. So I guess the best word to describe my experience here was inconsistent, but if I do ever end up back in Whistler, I'll give it another shot. We came here at around 8 on a Thursday night. Bar Oso is one of the few top restaurants in town that doesn't take reservations so we got hit with a one-hour wait and put our names on the list. Thankfully the wait ended up being more like 45 minutes so we hurried over from where we were killing time to sit at the bar. One thing I love about many Spanish/tapas spots is that they'll often have a separate drink menu for gin and tonics. I often find that it's hard to make a gin and tonic that special and fun, but the options here are fantastic. I ended up getting the one with Sheringham Seaside Gin + Fever Tree Indian Tonic which was delicious, honestly thanks to the gin which was unique. Citrusy and a little briny somehow. Made for a more complex sip. I loved it. As a martini lover I also had to get the Sea to Sky Martini (gin mare, tanqueray, noilly prat extra dry vermouth fino sherry) which was solid. Delicate and well-balanced. I finished later in the night (some friends met us after dinner) with the Core Values (suntory toki, charred apple, demerara sugar, beeswax, angostura) which was like a smoky, rich, sweet old fashioned variation. Also solid, but the G&T was the clear winner. The food was a letdown for us. Some dishes were pretty good, others were plain meh. It all felt uninspired. But the prices here are fair and maybe it was an off night, considering all of the rave reviews I've seen. Or perhaps we didn't order the right things. Eats, below: BC Endive + red wine poached pear w/ valdeon blue cheese dressing caramelized pecans: B Probably our best dish of the night but it was laughably small for a salad, even at a tapas place. Nothing remarkable but still good. Love an endive salad in the winter months. Tuna poke (red tuna, sesame, chillies): B- This dish, on the other hand, was larger than I expected. The tuna was definitely fresh and the flavors were fine, just a little boring. Shishito peppers (oven roasted, romesco, smoked sea salt): B Basic shishitos, don't have much else to say. If you like shishitos and they're a go-to tapas order for you like they are for us, definitely worth considering. Gambas al ajillo w/ prawns, garlic, chili, olive oil: C These was the biggest disappointment for us. For starters, the shrimp were very tiny, like what you might see in fried rice. Me and my husband came here when visiting Whistler a few years ago and this was our favorite bar. We came back to Whistler for our honeymoon and would definitely say it's still our absolute favorite! We were here almost every night of our vacation. The cocktails are delicious, cheese board is amazing as well. We've love the atmosphere in here with the light up bar (we love sitting at the bar).
