My mom got the chicken soup, I got the saki Yuki, and my boyfriend got the kao soi. All of them were flavorful and rich. My mom's chicken soup had such a good flavor. She loved it. My noodles were quite spicy, but not too much. It had good flavor and I loved the pork. The inside of the restaurant is decorated beautifully. I think they have the most beautiful wallpaper I've ever seen in a restaurant. My mom's chicken noodle soup broth had ingredients that included some sort of fish. She was a little skeptical because she does not like fish, but she didn't even taste it. I even tried it as well, and I really enjoyed her soup broth. My favorite place to eat on my OKC trip. Went with a large party of 6 so expect gratuity for a party that size. Everyone in my party ordered something different an every single item hit. I ordered the sukiyaki, fried chicken appetizer, and an espresso Martini. All of those items were amazing. Such fresh flavors and very authentic. My friend from Myanmar said the food tasted just like home and the beer selection reminded him of home. Exceeded the hype! Which is certainly hard to do after being in the New York Times. I finally made it in to try them for out for a Friday lunch. As someone familiar with Ma Der Lao, the interior and lighting have a lot of similarities. Began with appetizers of fried calamari, chicken karaage & the 2 pc leg & thigh, hot chicken special as entree, and finished with the pandan cinnamon roll for dessert. The only miss was the karaage as ours were tough without much flavor; the eggplant jaew sounded intriguing but didn't wow. Everything else was superb! I've had a lot of bad rubbery calamari in my life and theirs was exceptional, both in the flavor of the breading and the sauces(plate licking good!). In fact, I took various morsels from other table dishes to not let any sauce go to waste. The leg/thigh and the hot chicken sandwich both illustrated well the magic that Chef Chanchaleune engineers of taking things that look and feel familiar to the American palate and transforming them with Laotian funk and flavors. I was stuffed at this point to the level where I normally wouldn't get dessert, but of course couldn't leave without trying their most Instagrammed dish. From the first bite, it was apparent that it tastes even better than it looks. What a surprise and amazing experience. Best restaurant of the year for me and my wife and in OKC. We're from Portland and have a pretty tight foodie scene but Bar Sen hit on all levels. Appetizers, mains, fry bread (oh my gosh), and that pandan cinnamon roll was almost worth flying back for. Our waitress was fantastic and everything was spot on. My husband and I love the sister restaurant, Ma Der Lao, so I was waiting for a cooler weather day to try this place. We went on Friday so I expected a happy hour like next door. We've been to Ma Der Lao Kitchen next doors, so kinda knew this was going to be a similar concept with Laos food with the same chef, but more street kind. With all the hype and all the high Yelp reviews, we were excited to go try. Indoors was larger than I anticipated, with a modern bar feel. It was pretty busy considering it was a weekday. Background music was a good volume, keeping the vibe vibrant but we can still chat. Everything was okay, not that much stood out. Hubs said maybe we should've come on the weekend when the main chefs are in. Not sure if we did indeed get the sous chefs this night? The Spicy Cucumber Salad was okay, not that much different than other Asian cucumber salads. They did liberally sprinkle a spicy seasoning over the top. We did expect the food to be somewhat spicy here since it's Laos food, but maybe they could've mixed it. The Chicken Kara-age was a standout. Fried to perfection, we squeezed the lime all over for that special citrus tangy acidity. Didn't even need whatever sauce came with it. The Chicken Noodle Soup (Khao Piek Sen) was okay. The thickness didn't add to the flavor. Quail eggs were so good, could've used a couple more since they are so small. The Sukiyaki Pork Noodle Soup was good. The pork belly was tender and cooked perfectly. Here's my biggest gripe. Once we ordered, our server had asked us if we wanted Chili Oil. We hesitated since this is our first time here and we didn't know. She then said, "I'll bring you some Chili Oil in case you want to make your food more spicy.". We shrugged okay. Our food was spicy enough so we didn't even use it. We did dip our chopstick into it to taste it, but that was about it. When we got our check, they charged us $1.00 for the Chili Oil. Ugh! Granted that $1.00 is not going to break us, but I wished she had been more transparent. That would give us a chance to try the spiciness of the food first and then if we do indeed want it to be more spicy then ask her to bring us some Chili Oil. Amazing food and filling. Has the special massaman coconut curry chicken, the chicken soup, the doughnut, the cucumber salad, the frisée salad, and the two chicken piece starter. The whole meal was fantastic. We sat outside on a warm early fall night and this was a serious good vibe. Service was fantastic and attentive, providing great explanations in the dishes. Regarding the food, the salad was probably my favorite. It was just so fresh, crisp and refreshing and the best salad I've had in a long time. The spicy cucumber salad was also amazing with crisp cucumbers in a very spicy preparation. Three days later I enjoyed the chicken soup. Both chicken dishes were fantastic and the massaman coconut curry chicken dish was served with aromatic rice that resulted in a delicious combination. The whole meal was executed extremely well. We love Ma Der Lao, so of course we had to try its sister restaurant, Bar Sen! Went there for date night and we went EARLY. We got there at 4:55PM, right before they opened and whew - lucky we did! They already had a bit of a line by the time we got there too. Interior of the place is absolutely gorgeous, dark and cozy vibes. We got a few things to try - fried chicken and calamari for appetizers, the spicy pork noodles, and the red curry noodles. Fried chicken was pretty good, and the broth from both noodles was flavorful as well. We ate a little and saved the rest of the noodles for the next day - and I swear, something happens when you save it for the next day! The noodles were extra yummy when we had it for lunch the next day. But our favorite of the night was the pandan cinnamon roll for SURE. The cinnamon roll gets six stars!! The berries, the crumble, that icing. Y'all. My only regret was not bringing more home. A definite must try if you're at Bar Sen! read more

Decided to finally try Bar Sen with the family, and it did not disappoint! We ordered the cucumber salad, chicken karage, the pork noodle dish, and the chicken noodle soup with chili oil added. Everything was delicious, the chicken noodle soup was the best I've ever had in my life--so good! I'm glad I only used a quarter of the chili oil, because wow Laotian food is hella spicy, and I'm Korean! 5/5 Bar Sen - NW 16th St, OKC We went to Bar Sen on a Saturday night around 8:30, and the area was packed -- NW 16th is definitely one of the busiest and trendiest spots in OKC right now. Parking was a bit of a mess (as expected), but I eventually found a paid lot nearby for about $6, which was worth it. I dropped off my significant other and our kid at the door first while I circled around, so that helped. Once I got inside, they were already seated, and the atmosphere was lively -- definitely a bar vibe but still family-friendly enough for dinner. My boy got the chicken, my girl had the chicken noodles, and I went with the spicy pork noodles. We also shared the cucumber salad. Everything was fire -- fresh, flavorful, and just the right amount of spicy. Service was great too. The staff kept our big water bottle refilled consistently, which I appreciated since the food had a nice kick. My only small suggestion: turn the music down just a notch. I know it's a bar, but it's also a great place to sit, eat, and talk. When it's hard to hear the person across from you, it takes away a little from the experience. I am so so blown away how good Bar Sen was. It was well worth the wait. After my third attempt to eat dinner here I was finally able to grab some food. Between me and the table we had about every noodle soup and they were all pretty solid. None of them stood out because they were all equally good. What did catch my attention were the appetizers. The calamari with its dual flavored sauce and the chicken karage were both excellent. Finally the cherry on top was the cinnamon roll. A beautiful blend of an American asian fusion performed to perfection. I will be back for the roll alone. It took us 3 tries before we could eat here because of how busy they were. Anyway, this is an amazing Laotian noodle shop and neighborhood bar. Our server gave us excellent cocktail recommendations. I tried the Bramble, and it was incredibly refreshing with a generous pour. We also loved the fried chicken appetizer, which was packed with flavor and perfectly crispy. For the main dish, I had the Khao Piek Sen, which was well-made, aromatic and served in a larger portion than I had at Ma Der Lao. The broth was flavorful and the meat was so tender. Walked in and had a 30 minute wait so ordered brumble at the bar which was refreshing and sour. Atmosphere had dim lighting with floral wallpaper. Service was excellent as well. The aesthetic was lovely! Gorgeous decor, family photos in the hall, which I thought was a cute touch. The bathroom was spectacular and they had feminine products available, so bonus points there. When we entered the host was very welcoming and the servers were attentive and knew the menu items well. I only ordered the calamari. I enjoyed the flavors of the sauces with it and it was fried well. My husband ordered the chicken noodles and said it tasted like a way better and more flavorful chicken noodle soup. Saturday lunch was a hit! Stopped by on a winter afternoon with a craving for hot noodle soup. Was warmly greeted at the podium and kindly seated at the bar. We were so excited for the arrival of Bar Sen, and now that it's here, we are just as obsessed with it as we were when Bar Sen was announced! Chef Jeff again adds another fantastic restaurant to the plaza district with Bar Sen that initially featured lots of noodle soup features we saw on the daily rotation at Ma Der Lao now offered everyday Bar Sen is open. But over time, the menu at Bar Sen had adapted to include new and delicious items like the fried calamari, the fried chicken leg and thigh, and most recently a refreshing scallop crudo, all which we love! The khao piek sen was my favorite Ma Der noodle special and it's a staple on the Bar Sen menu, but here you order it with patongo, a fried donut that you can dip into your soup that elevates the whole experience! I love the November specials Bar Sen did lately, and my favorite was their fried chicken sandwich which was amazing! Amazing food! We ordered a variety of appetizers including the chicken kara-age which was served with a spicy eggplant dip, the beef jerky, and coconut milk fried chicken. I went by myself on a Saturday around 4:45pm and sat at the bar. I had been doing errands in OKC while starving and was dreading going back to Norman since there was an OU game in town. Madeline was my bartender and as soon as I said it was my first time dining there, she was quick to explain the menu and provide suggestions - what a relief to not even have to ask for those things. I will say that the place is very dark and even with my glasses on it was hard to see in there and read the menu. Cute vibe though with the wallpaper and warm wood furniture. I started with a Coconut flavored beer which sounded kind of gross, but was quite lovely so Madeline did not steer me wrong. I would definitely get it again even though it was $10 which seemed a bit outrageous and why I only ordered one. I also got the cucumber salad which was quite spicy and the pork and noodle soup with this bread she recommended. I am not super familiar with Laotian food, but it all had a kick and the bread was phenomenal, I wish I had ordered two of them. Went on a Friday for lunch recently. The restaurant is dark, but hip and reminds me of its sister, Mar De Lao, which is next door. Our server was excellent. He was informative, down to earth and provided suggestions for first timers. We started with the calamari app. A smallish portion but beautifully presented with a red spicy sauce and a minty sauce. I had the chicken noodle soup which was piping hot with well blended flavors. The quail eggs, fried onion and cilantro added texture and flavor to the mild, yummy broth. The noodles were similar to Udon and the broth was creamy. My wife had the pork soup with the signature peanut sauce. Light on veggies, but she thought the flavor was good despite it being lukewarm. She didn't want to send back since we were short on time. I had a 4 oz pour of an olivy sake (cold, no warm options). It was good but about double the price of the warm sake at our sushi spot (I'm not a sake connoisseur). For dessert, we had the "cinnamon roll" with fresh fruit and pecans. Absolutely delicious and I'm not really a dessert guy. Overall, very good, but just shy of a 5 star for us. read more

A neat place. Just wanted to have a quick lunch and we ended up here. The noodles of mine were not as hot as I thought or as it appeared to so. But the fragrance definitely was calling "yummy." Wished they had told us that a tiny sauce dish of hot pepper was an extra charge of a dollar. Not the price tag was anything bothering us; it was more about informing your customers rather than sort of sneakily mentioning it without a full disclosure. Since they only have one dessert item, we ordered. The favor needs to be stronger but apparently they tune it down, I guess, to be more palatable to the non-Asian customers. I may be bias because I've known Jeff and his family since childhood but I can tell you that Jeff took Bar Sen to another level when it comes to classic Lao food. But first lets talk about the drinks; Started with the old fashion classic, the twist here is it had Thai tea flavor, can definitely taste it on the aftertaste (5/5). I also tried the espresso martini, wasn't my fave but it kept the vibes going. (4/5). For small bites, we tried it all and my absolute favorites are the 2pc Leg &Thigh, beef jerky, spicy cucumber salad and the fried calamari. The 2pc leg & thigh is straight fire. IMO, better than Ma Der (sister restaurant) if you've had it there. Now to the mains.. the khao piek sen brought back memories of me eating this as a kid. #lifehack, the bowl comes out steaming hot, if you don't want to burn your tongue then take a piece of ice cube and put it in the soup for a few seconds and then take it out. You'll be able to slurp in no time. I usually eat with pork blood and chicken feet but for some reason went with just patongo. (5/5) I'll have to come back to try the other soups but my sister's did enjoy the suki yaki and khao Soi. Lastly, dessert and I'll just tell you go ahead and order two cause you definitely want to take one home. This was amazing. The cinnamon roll is huge and the pandan flavor was there. The citrus from the fruits gave it a nice touch of acidity to mellow the sweetness. It was perfect! I'm dreaming about it now lol Overall, I had a great time.
