I emailed Jamie before stopping by the shop to let him know I had gone through some jewelry and wanted to find options for selling/melting down to repurpose into new pieces. He responded right away and I stopped by to have him look at each piece. It was actually pretty fun to watch him evaluate each piece and run the various tests on the gold and silver pieces. He explained what he was doing with each piece and was able to provide a total at the end, write up the sale agreement, and cut a check! But now I work from home, and prefer not to go downtown for errands (for fun, yes!). I'm not much of a jewelry person, and had no idea if there was an appraiser near me. Yelp directed me to Baraka, and I'm so glad! It's right in Ballard, and though the parking is tough sometimes, it's still easier than going downtown. As someone else here mentioned, you need to wave or knock to be let in. The customer area is very small, smaller than a typical kitchen. But it's very professional looking, and beautiful with glass cases and sparkly jewelry. There is a place to sit when waiting to be the next customer assisted. The customer service is perfect: top-notch responsiveness when I phoned ahead to inquire about whether I needed an appointment (I didn't), and just very nice, welcoming, knowledgeable people. After being so pleased with my initial visit for a ring soldiering, I returned with some costume jewelry earrings that had been my grandmothers - not worth a lot, but had great sentimental value. The fake diamonds had come out of the sterling silver prongs and needed to be repaired. I was given an estimate with the promise to attempt to repair them, but no guarantee considering the delicate status. They also have beautiful showcases with their jewelry for sale, but they are not pushy at all about you purchasing something. In fact, I am sure if you just went in to look around and ask some questions, they would be happy to just chat with you. All other jewelers we went to were over $100 to resize the ring, and Baraka charged half of what others were charging. Plus, their communication is fantastic and they will polish any ring you get resized by them, at any time, for free. That's kind of awesome since I don't keep jewelry cleaner at home and don't really want to. I would recommend this place anytime and every time for someone who needs an important piece of jewelry to be resized or just cared for.
