4-1/2 stars Came for a celebratory dinner and service was really nice, if a bit understaffed and slow. Inside is small and really loud, so you might need to shout to hear each other. We opted for a few small dishes to share, including: - Kanpachi ceviche (4/5) very light and refreshing. Wish there were more of the fish, though - Sugar cube melon and lemon cucumber salad (5/5) super ripe cantaloupe and plenty of zing in every bite. My favorite dish! - Hand rolled spaghetti (3.5/5) it was a pesto spaghetti dish that was very flavorful, but I wasn't blown away by the handmade spaghetti: it could've been more al dente and the sauce didn't really taste like pesto; I tasted mostly lemon. A bit overly salty, too - Smoked and 1/2 fried chicken (3.5/5) the chicken was beautiful fried, with a thin yet hardy crackling interior that I hadn't quite had before in fried chicken. Sauce was sweet in its soy sauce base, but some cuts of meat were on the dry side - Coffee toffee pudding (3/5) probably the weakest of the bunch: we waited 8-10 minutes for it (as advertised), and it came in...a mug?? Not the most beautifully-presented, and overall, I did not get a lot of the pudding inside, mostly the toppings. Given that it's $12 for otherwise a microwavable dessert, it was disappointing - Chocolate flan (5/5) now this hit the spot! Sleeper restaurant, true hidden gem! Very inconspicuous and I've never noticed it before. The place is small and loud and you may have to wait a bit but the host is so gracious and attentive. The service is outstanding! Food is meant to be shared and is perfect for a night out or celebration. The dishes are so imaginative--flavorful and visually appealing. We started off with cheese appetizer to warm up. Not amazing but a solid starter. The badger flame beet salad was very tasty with pistachio and ruby red grapefruit. Not much greens but delicious. The hamachi crudo tasted fresh but I'm a purist and always prefer the fish flavor over the vinaigrette dressing. The beef tartare was a tad under seasoned imo. The mains blew my mind. Usually the mains are outshined by the starters in a fine dining establishment. Not here! The Indian egg was something I've never had. A soft boiled egg enveloped with an Indian spiced sausage was surrounded by cucumber, sumac, and yogurt. A mandatory order. The smoked and fried chicken (brined a few days prior per our server) was hot, delicious, and complimented with a soy and chile sauce. Great meal in itself. Get it! Baran's is a michelin guided recommended restaurant that sells breakfast burritos. Definitly overhyped and being able to sell so much based off the michelin recommendation which I believe is from their fancy dinners and not the burrito itself. The instagrammers would say otherwise. Don't get me wrong, this burrito is still delicious and tasty. I ordered through Instagram a few days beforehand. I got a bacon and a chorizo and they were both pretty good, but I feel like nothing really to rave about. Came with a nice green and red sauce. From the Hamachi Crudo, fresh baked focaccia, a radicchio salad that isn't bitter, a crispy skin Branzino filet in a pool of red coconut curry, addictive slurpy mushroom spaghetti and steak frites with the NY Strip perfectly grilled and frites triple cooked to achieve a crispy outer and a creamy potato center. I have been seeing Baran's 2239 online and decided to check it out. They are known for their breakfast burritos. The chorizo and bacon burritos were packed with flavorful meat, crispy hash browns, soft eggs, and green onions for a perfect crunch. The salsas were the perfect addition, they give you a smoky red sauce and zesty green salsa, both had a really good kick of heat. This is a long overdue review. I am only reviewing the Breakfast Burritos which are offered Friday, Saturday and a Sunday only. On Wednesday they post the special of the week in Instagram. So follow them now!!! Each week it's a unique special create by the burrito masters at Barrans. You can also order Bacon or Chorizo each week as well. DM your order and they will give you a pick up time. Staff is super efficient at both responding to DMs and getting the food out at your assigned time slot. It's a small parking lot but they are open til noon to hand out your order. This is one of the best breakfast burritos I have ever had. The bacon is a classic that can only be loved. It's the safety valve if you don't want the special. My son love the Chorizo and I like to try the specials from time to time, if I'm fast enough to get my order in as they do sell out fast. When you pick up your order it feels like you just win a prize. I like to head down to the pier and enjoy the weather in Beautiful Hermosa while having the best burrito ever. It has never disappointed. And when I surprise a friend with the burrito it always makes their day. If you see a best burrito list without Barrans listed then unfollow that influencer. Serving good food from an eclectic menu, Baran's 2239 is a small, unassuming restaurant located in a small strip mall on PCH in Hermosa Beach. Back in 2019, it even earned Michelin's Bib Gourmand designation which recognizes "high-quality food at a great value." Food: As mentioned, the menu is eclectic, offering everything from hamachi sashimi to a maple apple salad to Brazilian braised beef cheek to hand rolled spaghetti to a bone-in ribeye. I ordered the steak tartare, blistered shishito peppers, and Indian egg. The steak tartare was prepared simply with a horseradish cream and chives, and served on a rosti (a pancake made from grated potatoes) with an egg yolk gel. The tartare was simple and clean, with a hint of horseradish flavor, and the rosti took the place of the typical bread slice, tasting like crispy hash brown. Unfortunately, on this night, the tartare was overly salty, and the egg yolk gel wasn't runny enough. It's a good dish that was just off this night. The blistered shishito peppers were a pleasant surprise because shishito peppers are usually a throw-away appetizer, prepared without any care. But at Baran's, the blistered shishito peppers are prepared with soy and scallion butter, and served on a miso eggplant puree along with sushi rice croutons. The puree reminded me of a creamy baba ganoush, and the croutons added a very nice, crunchy textural difference. Another good dish. The Indian egg (known as nargishi kofta) is similar to the well-known Scotch egg (a soft-boiled egg wrapped in sausage, coated in breadcrumbs, and deep fried). In fact, there is a debate as to whether the Scotch egg was invented independently in Yorkshire or inspired by the Indian egg. The Baran's Indian egg is a soft-boiled egg wrapped in lamb sausage, served on a curry jus, and surrounded by cucumber slices with sumac yogurt. All together, the flavors were good, with a hint of curry and the cucumber slices providing a refreshing contrast to the lamb sausage. I would have like some breading or coating (as found with a Scotch egg) to provide some texture and crunch, but once again, a good dish. Service: The service was friendly and welcoming. The servers had a relaxed look that I would describe it as "clean casual." Bottom Line: I very much enjoyed my meal at Baran's. The menu was interesting, and the food is prepared well. Note 1 - Baran's is also known for their breakfast burritos. According to Eater, "[t]he Michelin-awarded Baran's 2239 in Hermosa Beach is a breakfast burrito beast, selling more than 100 an hour on weekends." Note 2 - I sat at the "bar." However, the bar is really just a counter that faces a wall with wine glasses (and wine bottles below). The servers do go behind the counter to grab glasses and bottles, but it isn't nearly as interesting as sitting at a true bar. Next time, I will sit at a table. read more

Baran's is a local favorite of mine and my friend. I brought her here for her Birthday dinner. I ordered a glass of pinot noir as we were deciding what to order. We usually get smoked fried chicken, but we wanted to try a few dishes that we've never had in our previous visits. Started off with the Hamachi sashimi, shaved fennel with a mandarin vin, castelvetrano olive relish and toasted sesame. Wow. This starter was so refreshingly light and the hamachi was so delicate and delicious. Next we shared the blistered shishito peppers which was soy charred, scallion butter, miso eggplant puree and with rice croutons. The shishito peppers had quite the spicy heat to them. If you don't like spicy, you may want to skip this dish, however, we loved it. The eggplant puree along with the rice crutons nicely balanced the heat from the shishito peppers. Our 3rd dish we shared the steak frites. Grilled New York strip steak perfectly cooked to order medium, in a au poivre sauce and garlic aioli, served with frites. We're both a big fan of rib eye and not NY strip, but this was cooked perfectly and the au poivre sauce made the dish. And the frites....OMG, these were the best frites we had. Even better than MB Post, which we love their fries. The frites were crisp and so tender after the nice crunch. I think they must be fried in duck fat. We had to make sure we saved room for dessert. We always get the coffee toffee pudding. This we do not share. We made the mistake years ago when we shared this dessert. That was a big mistake. Almost ended our friendship. So now we each get our own coffee toffee pudding. If you haven't had this, you need to get this. Just make sure you have enough room to enjoy it. Note: if you pay by credit card, 3% will be added to the bill. Service at Baran's is always friendly and attentive without overbearing. I saw this place pop on my feed on IG, and this guy said these were the best Breakfast Burritos in LA. I have my Doctorate in Breakfast Burritos, so I had to go check them out. I've separated Breakfast Burritos into 2 types. OG, which is the classic Lucky Boy type, & New Age, which usually has different or specialty ingredients. I ordered 2, 1 Carnitas, 1 classic Bacon. They were both very good, but i think the classic bacon was actually the stand out. This place only sells Burritos Fri, Sat, & Sunday, and they close at 1pm. The post what the special is going to be Wednesday on their IG story. You order by DM. All the salsas were good, the Burritos were very well balanced. But I can't give them best BB in LA. That still goes to Macheen, followed by LA Azteca. But I'd say they make the Top 5. Try them out and go eat at the beach, which is only a few blocks away. read more

Finally crossed this place off my list! It is an involved process to snag their breakfast burritos (only avail fri-sun), esp their Friday special which sells out fast. I DMed them wed for fri pickup and they responded fairly quickly. Friday pickup was a bit hectic. The parking lot out front was packed with cars and there was construction on the side street making it harder to navigate. The actual pick up was pretty quick and easy; you give your name, they confirm your order and you pay. I was probably in and out in less than 5 min. We ordered a chorizo burrito (4.5/5) and a bacon burrito (4/5). The chorizo was our favorite. It was super flavorful with housemade chorizo, crispy hash browns, melted cheese and chopped green onions. Paired well with both sauces. The bacon one was cheesier but a bit salty and I couldn't taste the hash browns as much. The green onions stood out more in this one and I would've liked even more. The one thing I didn't like was the thick folds at the top and bottom; no one wants a tortilla only bite. Overall the burritos were good but I don't see myself coming often (mostly bc of the order/pickup process). I called on Wednesday to place an order for Sunday, a bacon and a chorizo burrito. People that were in front of us wanted to order in-person and we overheard it would take 40 minutes. A lot of the reviews on Yelp are more focused towards the Breakfast Burrito. I'm kind of surprised that this is a fine dining restaurant, the location and interior didn't stand out to me. This is coming from a couple who have been trying to find the best breakfast burrito in town in SoCal over the last few years. We called in our order on the drive (so about 45-1hr ahead of time). In the mornings, the seating is closed and it's only pickup only. Staff was incredible - we also bought a bag of coffee beans for home use. One of my favorite breakfast burritos in the LA area! Got one bacon, one chorizo, and both were very well balanced and tasted so fresh. Perfectly melted cheese, and both the potatoes and eggs were cooked to a fantastic texture. They weren't overly massive, which I personally appreciate, and neither burrito was dry at all, which sometimes happens with breakfast burritos. Can't speak to the service because we got these to-go. Parking was easy, as there's a lot right out front. There is a lot of hype around Barans breakfast burritos, so had to come try it out. We pre ordered via their instagram on Wednesday and the pick up was very fast and easy. Each breakfast burritos was about $15, which to me is a little pricey for the size of their burritos. I'm gonna be honest and don't understand the hype of their burritos. There are a lot of better breakfast burritos all over OC and LA for the same price if not cheaper. We got the bacon and chorizo burrito. The bacon burrito was very boring and not much flavor to it. The chorizo burrito was definitely a lot better in terms of flavor. The eggs and the tater tots in both burritos were good, nothing spectacular. If it was cheaper I'd give it a higher rating but for $15 for a smaller burrito and average taste, I would give it a 3.5 at best for the chorizo burrito. read more

We came across in this on Open Table and their menu looked really great! From the outside it's nothing like what it looks like inside. Tiny spot but with reservations should not be a problem to get a table. For appetizer, we had: Bread w/burrata: Bread was baked to its perfection and the parm butter it came with was delicious. Bread lover should definitely order this! Kingfish Sashimi: Four slices of kingfish with lemon vinaigrette and herd sauce - two words "Chef kissed". Highly recommend this dish. Red Curry Grilled Prawns: Two large prawns cut in halves. Red curry went super well with grill flavor and some lemon- Oulala! The papaya salad that came with it was delicious as well. For seafood lover, this dish is recommended. From Veggie section, we tried roasted kindernut squash. This dish was super flavorful and the goat cheese polenta was simply wow! This dish definitely hit the spot. It was different and unique. Great dish to try. For mains, we got: Potato Gnocchi: Absolutely delicious, I am gnocchi fan and all the flavors of onion cream with pancetta, peas, and pecorino came along so well and balanced the sauce to the "T". Pork Adobo: Excellent, large piece of pork belly over garlicky fried rice- yum is the word. Another great dish! Pan seared Sea Bass: After a long time I came across a fish dish which was not bland at all! Sea Bass was cooked to its perfection with crispy skin and the habanada sauce had so much flavors. Highly recommend this dish! For dessert, we had coffee toffee pudding and brown butter cake, both were amazing and mouthful, but the brown butter cake hit the spot - highly recommend the cake - save some room for it. We ended up parking up the street. Restaurant is cozy and intimate. We started off with their red onion focaccia. Very crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. We also ordered some cheese, which came with crackers, dates and pistachios. We also had the red curry prawns which were good and flavorful. I like the spice level. It had a nice char and found that I could eat the whole thing, shell and all. Maple Apple salad has been my favorite since the first time I went. It has all the umami flavors. Crunchy, salty , sweet from the apples and creamy with their cheese. Last but not least was their smoked and fried chicken. The crunch level and flavor was outstanding. Amazing, we were blown away! Great staff and deeeeeelicious food! Place appears to be a hole in the wall but once you walk in you can tell it's a step up. Very nice ambiance, without being foofy. Staff were very friendly and helpful the entire meal. They even made the kids off menu simple chicken strips, tots and pasta, which was so nice for us. We tried as much as we could (see below) and I thought every single things was outstanding!
