We come back to Baran's for their food... they are real adventurers of the flavors!!!! And they make daredevil changes in their menu almost every month, so they keep their diners always in anticipation. Yesterday was no different and we enjoyed a new incredible pea straw berry salad and also new in the menu the French onion toast.. for sure we had our traditional Indian egg and to close steak fritters with a bottle of French white from their large wine cellar... with the attentive service of our twin friends and everybody else at Baran's the ambience turns in to a pleasure... and all this in our neighborhood in Redondo Beach... don't miss the opportunity to adventure in this fine cuisine marvel !!!

It's been a few years since I've been here but I'm happy to report Chef Tyler and crew are still serving up Michelin quality food even though it's been a few years since they've won the award. Service was on point from the start and the ambiance was energetic for a Tuesday night. Party of 4 and we got an assortment of dishes.

Best breakfast burrito in the world

This is a long overdue review. I am only reviewing the Breakfast Burritos which are offered Friday, Saturday and a Sunday only. On Wednesday they post the special of the week in Instagram. So follow them now!!! Each week it's a unique special create by the burrito masters at Barrans. You can also order Bacon or Chorizo each week as well. DM your order and they will give you a pick up time. Staff is super efficient at both responding to DMs and getting the food out at your assigned time slot. It's a small parking lot but they are open til noon to hand out your order. This is one of the best breakfast burritos I have ever had. The bacon is a classic that can only be loved. It's the safety valve if you don't want the special. My son love the Chorizo and I like to try the specials from time to time, if I'm fast enough to get my order in as they do sell out fast. When you pick up your order it feels like you just win a prize. I like to head down to the pier and enjoy the weather in Beautiful Hermosa while having the best burrito ever. It has never disappointed. And when I surprise a friend with the burrito it always makes their day. If you see a best burrito list without Barrans listed then unfollow that influencer. This place is amazing.

Indian Egg (Nice Gooey Runny Yolk)

Serving good food from an eclectic menu, Baran's 2239 is a small, unassuming restaurant located in a small strip mall on PCH in Hermosa Beach. Back in 2019, it even earned Michelin's Bib Gourmand designation which recognizes "high-quality food at a great value." Food: As mentioned, the menu is eclectic, offering everything from hamachi sashimi to a maple apple salad to Brazilian braised beef cheek to hand rolled spaghetti to a bone-in ribeye. I ordered the steak tartare, blistered shishito peppers, and Indian egg. The steak tartare was prepared simply with a horseradish cream and chives, and served on a rosti (a pancake made from grated potatoes) with an egg yolk gel. The tartare was simple and clean, with a hint of horseradish flavor, and the rosti took the place of the typical bread slice, tasting like crispy hash brown. Unfortunately, on this night, the tartare was overly salty, and the egg yolk gel wasn't runny enough. It's a good dish that was just off this night. The blistered shishito peppers were a pleasant surprise because shishito peppers are usually a throw-away appetizer, prepared without any care. But at Baran's, the blistered shishito peppers are prepared with soy and scallion butter, and served on a miso eggplant puree along with sushi rice croutons. The puree reminded me of a creamy baba ganoush, and the croutons added a very nice, crunchy textural difference. Another good dish. The Indian egg (known as nargishi kofta) is similar to the well-known Scotch egg (a soft-boiled egg wrapped in sausage, coated in breadcrumbs, and deep fried). In fact, there is a debate as to whether the Scotch egg was invented independently in Yorkshire or inspired by the Indian egg. The Baran's Indian egg is a soft-boiled egg wrapped in lamb sausage, served on a curry jus, and surrounded by cucumber slices with sumac yogurt. All together, the flavors were good, with a hint of curry and the cucumber slices providing a refreshing contrast to the lamb sausage. I would have like some breading or coating (as found with a Scotch egg) to provide some texture and crunch, but once again, a good dish. Service: The service was friendly and welcoming. The servers had a relaxed look that I would describe it as "clean casual." Bottom Line: I very much enjoyed my meal at Baran's. The menu was interesting, and the food is prepared well. Note 1 - Baran's is also known for their breakfast burritos. According to Eater, "[t]he Michelin-awarded Baran's 2239 in Hermosa Beach is a breakfast burrito beast, selling more than 100 an hour on weekends." Note 2 - I sat at the "bar." However, the bar is really just a counter that faces a wall with wine glasses (and wine bottles below). The servers do go behind the counter to grab glasses and bottles, but it isn't nearly as interesting as sitting at a true bar. Next time, I will sit at a table.

Can only speak for the burrito experience. I got the chicken vindaloo special and it was great. Good amount of flavoring, the chicken was tender and the tots and eggs were cooked nicely. The cilantro lime sauce went very well with it. The staff was very friendly. I feel the og breakfast burrito is still my favorite so far.

    Hamachi Sashimi

Baran's is a local favorite of mine and my friend. I brought her here for her Birthday dinner. I ordered a glass of pinot noir as we were deciding what to order. We usually get smoked fried chicken, but we wanted to try a few dishes that we've never had in our previous visits. Started off with the Hamachi sashimi, shaved fennel with a mandarin vin, castelvetrano olive relish and toasted sesame. Wow. This starter was so refreshingly light and the hamachi was so delicate and delicious. Next we shared the blistered shishito peppers which was soy charred, scallion butter, miso eggplant puree and with rice croutons. The shishito peppers had quite the spicy heat to them. If you don't like spicy, you may want to skip this dish, however, we loved it. The eggplant puree along with the rice crutons nicely balanced the heat from the shishito peppers. Our 3rd dish we shared the steak frites. Grilled New York strip steak perfectly cooked to order medium, in a au poivre sauce and garlic aioli, served with frites. We're both a big fan of rib eye and not NY strip, but this was cooked perfectly and the au poivre sauce made the dish. And the frites....OMG, these were the best frites we had. Even better than MB Post, which we love their fries. The frites were crisp and so tender after the nice crunch. I think they must be fried in duck fat. We had to make sure we saved room for dessert. We always get the coffee toffee pudding. This we do not share. We made the mistake years ago when we shared this dessert. That was a big mistake. Almost ended our friendship. So now we each get our own coffee toffee pudding. If you haven't had this, you need to get this. Just make sure you have enough room to enjoy it. Note: if you pay by credit card, 3% will be added to the bill. Service at Baran's is always friendly and attentive without overbearing. Parking is always challenging since the lot is so small and it's shared with a couple of other businesses. We always park on the street in the neighborhood.

I saw this place pop on my feed on IG, and this guy said these were the best Breakfast Burritos in LA. I have my Doctorate in Breakfast Burritos, so I had to go check them out. I've separated Breakfast Burritos into 2 types. OG, which is the classic Lucky Boy type, & New Age, which usually has different or specialty ingredients. I ordered 2, 1 Carnitas, 1 classic Bacon. They were both very good, but i think the classic bacon was actually the stand out. This place only sells Burritos Fri, Sat, & Sunday, and they close at 1pm. The post what the special is going to be Wednesday on their IG story. You order by DM. All the salsas were good, the Burritos were very well balanced. But I can't give them best BB in LA. That still goes to Macheen, followed by LA Azteca. But I'd say they make the Top 5. Try them out and go eat at the beach, which is only a few blocks away.

2026 update: had dinner here again with family and I have to say that Baran's deserves five stars. New standouts this time were the mushroom spaghetti and thick cut pork chop. The fried chicken is a must have though, as is the sticky toffee pudding dessert.

Highly recommend their breakfast burrito - it does not disappoint. I ordered a couple of nights ahead through Instagram for Sunday morning. I was able to pick the time I wanted and the burrito was ready when I arrived. The parking lot had some open spots so it was an overall easy experience. I got the bacon breakfast burrito and it was one of the best I've had. The perfect ratios of melty cheese, crispy tator tots, eggs, bacon, and scallions.

Had the bacon breakfast burrito today. I might try the chorizo which a lot of people say is better another day, especially if someone else is paying. Overall, three out of five stars . The best breakfast burrito in LA or you've ever had is quite a strong statement as a lot of people have been saying on the Internet... so I had high expectations . Unfortunately my favorite part of the burrito was the tortilla. The sauces and eggs on the burrito were also decent . Why this particular burrito wasn't for me is that they use American cheese and instead of a sharp cheddar or a Mexican blend with or Monterey Jack, which I personally prefer. ( correction I was informed that it is a cheddar Jack blend however it is so mild tasted like American cheese. I don't know.) ** Anyway I still Can't don't think tater tots belong on a burrito . I had a feeling that this wasn't going to be for me, but I wanted to give this place thr benefit of the doubt . I really wanted to be won over but I wasn't today . The people that work were here seem friendly enough . I might come back for dinner as they seem like they have some really interesting items.

Finally crossed this place off my list! It is an involved process to snag their breakfast burritos (only avail fri-sun), esp their Friday special which sells out fast. I DMed them wed for fri pickup and they responded fairly quickly. Friday pickup was a bit hectic. The parking lot out front was packed with cars and there was construction on the side street making it harder to navigate. The actual pick up was pretty quick and easy; you give your name, they confirm your order and you pay. I was probably in and out in less than 5 min. We ordered a chorizo burrito (4.5/5) and a bacon burrito (4/5). The chorizo was our favorite. It was super flavorful with housemade chorizo, crispy hash browns, melted cheese and chopped green onions. Paired well with both sauces. The bacon one was cheesier but a bit salty and I couldn't taste the hash browns as much. The green onions stood out more in this one and I would've liked even more. The one thing I didn't like was the thick folds at the top and bottom; no one wants a tortilla only bite. Overall the burritos were good but I don't see myself coming often (mostly bc of the order/pickup process). Their service could be improved...I know it's just an order pickup but it felt transactional, almost unwelcoming (maybe bc I'm not one of their regulars).

Yep, you need to send a message on Instagram to reserve your breakfast burrito. I dm on Friday night and was able to get a Saturday morning pickup time. Baran's is located in a small strip mall, parking in the front. Ordered the Bacon breakfast burrito and chorizo - both were pretty good, not overly large. The reason for 4 stars is that I don't care for green onions and the burrito was loaded with too much green onions. Overall, delicious breakfast burrito, satisfying, the red sauce is very hot!

You can tell the chefs are dedicated to the craft. They're a 2025 bib gourmand restaurant and are hoping to aim for their first star, so their efforts into the decor, ambiance, and food shows (good luck!). The waitstaff/chefs were also very attentive. Mussels Tart - really delicious. Super unique and beautifully plated. No taste of fishiness or the ocean. Just overall a 5/5 dish that you must try. Beef tongue - I normally enjoy beef tongue thinly sliced at a Korean BBQ restaurant or coarsely chopped up in a street taco. They do it differently here. The beef tongue is one big cube. It's very flavorful and tender. Not as amazing as the mussels tart but still worth a try. Chili crab - this put them on the map. SUPER DELICIOUS. It's not what you'd expect from a creation called 'chili crab'. There's no shell to be seen and the crab meat is actually buried underneath. Scoop from the inside out. Tons of flavor and I wished the portion size was doubled. Lamb pappardelle - if you like lamb then you'll love this. Lots of different spices and flavors. It has a very deep flavor profile that makes you appreciate all the work and thought that went into designing this dish. I'd get this again also! Strawberry tiramisu - they brought this out for the birthday celebration. They prepared it in a gigantic bowl. Scooped out a generous portion and plated it right in front of us. I have a soft spot for tiramisu so I'd recommend this too. Best of luck on the Michelin star! I'd come back. 5/5

I really wanted to love this place. I read all the glowing…read morereviews and convinced myself the negative ones were probably just misunderstandings... but wow, I had it completely backwards. First, the restaurant itself is undeniably cute and cozy, tucked away in a corner of Hermosa Beach. Our first impression was honestly great, and we were excited to try it. Our reservation was at 5:00 PM, but when we arrived, the staff was still inside having what looked like a team huddle or group therapy session well past opening time. At first I thought maybe I got the hours wrong and they actually opened at 5:30. Nope -- 5:00 was correct. I understand pre-shift meetings happen. But maybe do the motivational speech at 4:50 instead of making customers stand outside after your posted opening time? They finally opened the doors around 5:10. Once seated, our server introduced himself by saying he was also one of the chefs, and apparently everyone dressed in white both cooks and serves. I didn't really understand the concept, but honestly, I don't care who brings the food as long as the food is good. These are what we ordered: SQUID -- This tasted like it had been marinated directly in seawater. Painfully salty. I genuinely did not understand the dish at all. Boiled squid with egg salad? Why? The portion was tiny, and we were hungry, so we basically used the mussels tart to dilute the salt enough to finish it. MUSSELS TART -- Actually delicious. No complaints here. BISTRO SALAD -- This was honestly shocking. It was SO sour that it was practically inedible. -- we literally take straight lemon shots every morning but this dish was hard to eat. This wasn't "bright acidity." This was weaponized vinegar. Bitter, aggressively sour, and tongue-numbing after one bite. We had to send it back because it was simply not edible. CABBAGE -- Flavor was good overall, but parts of it were so burnt that I genuinely questioned whether it was intentional or someone forgot it existed in the kitchen. Maybe it's culinary art I'm too uncultured to understand. FISH DIANE -- Delicious. No complaints at all. What ultimately made us decide we won't return wasn't even the inconsistent food -- it was the attitude. They still charged us for the salad we literally could not eat after sending it back. Then the couple next to us asked to keep one menu because they planned to order more later. One of the servers told them not to leave it on the table because she didn't want the menu to get dirty. The menu was a single flimsy printed paper menu. Not leather-bound. Not handmade parchment from the 1700s. Just printer paper. The whole experience felt oddly pretentious for a place serving burnt cabbage and acid salad. Some dishes were genuinely good, but the hospitality felt nonexistent and the food was wildly inconsistent. Cute restaurant, but definitely not somewhere we'd return to.

The fact that they speak Italian adds to the feel of authenticity and the waitstaff was on point the whole night. The dim lighting with the real wax candles, adds a intimate touch. The food started with a simple Hamachi Crudo, which was simple and elegant. The warm bread that accompanied it is a nice and appreciated surprise at the beginning of the meal. Next up was the octopus, which was served warm, and was not rubbery or chewy at all. The eggplant Parmesan was a little bit on the colder side, but taste wise very sweet, tender, and you could tell each portion was made lovingly. The gnocchi was soft, creamy, rich, and decadent, and the sauce was equally rich and a great pairing. When you were only served five pieces of gnocchi, somehow you feel more appreciative of each bite and that was certainly the case here. You probably wouldn't want to eat a whole bowl of the stuff as it was extremely rich and luxuriously creamy. The last dish was the tiramisu which had a strong coffee flavor. Joe worked with me to select the appetizers and music, ensured we always had water refilled and glasses topped off, and made sure every detail was handled. We had plenty of wine and appetizers, and the front area was reserved just for our group. The event was wonderful, and Joe's kindness and professionalism made it all so easy. Everyone loved Joe!
