I found Dr. Shang a compassionate and knowledgeable doctor with good bedside manner. I would definitely trust going to her again. The only reason why I took off one star is that I don't think the office is run the most efficiently. The first time I had ever gone, I was supposed to have a prescription called in for me that day. It took a couple days of calling the office to follow-up before it got sent in. I don't know if was the doctor or just the front office not following up on it. Second time I had gone in for a prescription, it was called in right away so maybe that was an anomaly. Also, most of the time when I call, I cannot get through to the office. I have to call multiple times and sometimes on different days to get to a live person. I also don't get call backs when I leave messages. The front office gal doesn't seem the most on-top-it. If this continues, I may have no choice but to start finding another ophthalmologists. read more

As another physician, I was referred to Dr. Shang by other physicians. I was truly puzzled when I pulled up her website for locations and found one website that seemed false. It had very negative comments and it seemed very vindictive. After contacting other physicians, I found it was a fraudulent website created by a patient. I reviewed Dr. Shang's credentials carefully and decided to go see her based on referrals from my colleagues. I have to admit I was a little nervous having read the fake website but Dr. Shang is the epitome of a caring and knowledgeable physician. She spent so much time with me on a detailed exam and explained my options for my reading issues. She is thorough and kind and I could tell kept up with current medical literature. Now I know why so many other physicians recommend her. As far as her receptionist, I found her to be warm and very polite. I completely understand that patient interactions with the front office are extremely important but I found mine to be very positive. As far as collecting payment upfront, it is standard of care to collect co-pays upon checking since it is required by insurance law. I would advise any future patients to read about her on her website and to disregard the one created by someone who for what unknown reason dislikes her. I truly cannot imagine why anyone would dislike her from my interactions with her. I feel confident to recommend her to my patients and my family. read more

I have blurry vision in my left eye for over two years, and I saw two other ophthalmologists for a total of 3 times during the past two years. In those 3 visits, one said I had dry eye and asked me to apply eye drops, the other told me my myopia has worsen, and the other time he told me my eye was dirty and oil was clogging my tear duct, without much careful examination. None was able to help me identify the problem, and my eyesight got much worse. So, I switched to Dr Shang. Upon first visit, Dr Shang gave me a thorough eye exam without rushing through, and she found out I had a cloud of floaters in my vitreous blocking my centerline of vision, and she explained to me in details what could be done to resolve this. Not to mention Dr Shang gave my eyes a good scrub to get rid of the oil deposits to clear up my tear ducts. I was able to see much clearer after that first visit. She is caring, and she is patient to help me understand my situation, and she definitely knows so much about eyes and how to treat them and keep them in healthy conditions. read more

I had to see Dr Shang for a very bad eye infection. Didnt have insurance so I had to paid cash, The price for a office visit was very reasonable. She examined my eyes, and prescribed some steroids, I was very glad I found her. This year I have insurance, and went back to her for my routine exam and this time I took my daughter as a patient and Im going to make an appointment for my husband I, myself, work for a doctors office, and you all should know that you have to pay BEFORE you see the Doctor, who is going to assure the doctor that you are not going to walk away without paying??? She performed cataract surgery on both my eyes with exceptional results. If it wasn't for Dr Shang diagnosing my retinopathy and getting me to a specialist I don't know where my eye sight would be. Her receptionist takes payment upfront while you are in the waiting room like most doctors with there own offices do these days. A reviewer below said something about the office not being clean and not having a nurse. I actually just went a few days ago and the office was really clean. It's hard to rate eye doc's cuz i only see them once a year. I haven't been able to find one I liked and decided to go see Dr. Shang. One thing I didn't like is they wanted payment upfront and right away. I don't like to pay until after the appointment... just seems more logical to me. She was a bit hard to understand also..she did not have an accent but it's just her choice of words... some doctors use terminology that the general public does not understand... I just went in for contacts exam (refractive) and it was $120. During the exam she kept talking about eye measurements, calculations, etc. that I really don't care about... I think next year I'll be looking for another eye doc. read more

I've had fantastic experiences with Dr. Shang. I initially came to Dr. Shang after my optometrist noted successive high intraocular pressure measurements and suggested an ophthalmologist. I certainly didn't want to start medications, but also didn't want vision loss. Dr. Shang was meticulous in her evaluation. I didn't have high pressures and my visual field and retina were fine. I found her to be extremely professional, informative and thorough. I look forward to continued follow-ups. I also had a pair progressive glasses made (including astigmatism). Progressives can sometimes be squirrely for me, but this pair was probably the best I have had to-date. I could see perfectly. Dr. Barbara Shang is the best doctor that I have ever seen!!! A friend recommended that I see her for a second opinion for my condition and I am so happy that I took her advice. My original doctor told me that I had a minor cyst and that nothing needed to be done. However, it turned out that my condition was more serious than what the original doctor stated. Dr. Shang took the time to thoughtfully explain what was happening unlike any other doctors that I had encountered before. She was very caring, gentle, and patient every step of the way with all of my questions and concerns. After, I was referred to a surgeon and Dr. Shang followed up with the the surgeon to review the biopsy. Even after the surgery, she called me every step of the way to explain what was going on and she answered all of the questions that I had. So I actually was trying to make a diff appt. with another ophthalmologist in this building but he was booked too far out so I decided to randomly come here. The review from Brendan from 2006 is accurate. Dr. Shang throws out random medical terms. She started saying I don't have this and that or that... Um thanks? But I wasn't even thinking that cuz I dunno what those mean! Like just tell me what I do have then. And when she would ask me questions and I didn't answer "right" she would look at me weird like I was dumb. Example: she told me not to rub my eye cuz she knows I must be really itchy right now. I said oh that's easy I don't really have to urge to rub anyway and it's not itchy. She looked at me all confused like that's impossible. Okkk I'm just telling you how I feel. Also she told me I had this spot on my eye but it's benign. So I freaked out and asked more questions. She's like, how did u not notice that and other doctors must've told u. Uh actually no one has EVER told me and no, I never really thought anything of the spot cuz I'm not an eye doctor! It's like, she loves making u feel inferior? Maybe she's just socially awkward? I'm a friendly person. She didn't smile once. For pricing, she's not the cheapest in the area, but she's also not the most expensive. It's in my neighborhood so I went out of convenience. Also, yes she does ask for payment first but that didn't bother me. I mean, we're gonna have to pay either way. She didn't take my Amex and that's all I had. But they let me go on and called me an hour later when I was home to take a diff credit card. Pros: she did prescribe me the meds I was looking for and knew right away what I had. Appt. was easy to make. Secretary was actually more pleasant to talk and work with than doctor. I was in and out fast. Would I come back? Not if I don't have to. I'd rather go to the doctor my friend referred me to in that building who is nicer and cheaper. Dr Shang is extremely unprofessional and rude to patient. I came in for a shingles caused eye infection. After I told her I got shingles, she immediately backed away from me and left the room. She told me she's's gonna go grab a mask and be back shortly, but instead she told her assistant that chickenpox is transmitted by air, she's never got it and asked her to tell me to leave. After a few minutes, assistant came in and told me the doctor cannot see me. I have to leave. so i left it without being seen or treated...Never seen any doctor that's so unprofessional. First of all, shingles does not transmit by air, it spreads through direct contact with the fluid from the rash and shingles is a lot less contagious than chickenpox. the risk of spreading the virus is low. Second, i told them why I came in when I made appointment, if she doesn't want to see a shingles patient, she could have told me earlier. Last and most important, the way she treated me was extremely rude. She doesn't even have the decency to apologize me. She just shut her door and never came back, told assistant to send me out.. terrible person! read more

Dr. Shang was recommended by my primary care doctor about 10 years ago and she has been excellent. She treats my wife and kids as well. She is thorough, concerned and very knowledgeable.
